Product Description
Billy Bragg, once-described as a "one-man Clash," has spent the last two decades writing and performing passionate, witty, socially conscious music. This is a reissue of Live and Dubious, Billy's first album containing live material, combined with The Internationale, a 1990 EP of global and historical political anthems and revolutionary ballads. The Internationale features everything from a brass band and a Welsh choir on the title track to the Spanish-language "Nicaragua, Nicaraguita." The equally fiery Live and Dubious, originally released in 1988 with the subtitle "Help Save the Youth of America," came with this message from Billy: "I have no vote in your Presidential election yet its outcome will directly affect my future and the future of millions of people around the world... Remember, when you elect a President, you are electing a President for all of us. Please be more careful this time."

These discs include Bragg's Internationale and Live and Dubious EPs, with some bonus tracks. The second disc is a DVD that contains material from a small handful of Bragg concerts in the 1980s when there were still a few serious communist/socialist countries in the world.

The remastering of the music is great. This is, perhaps, Bragg's most overtly political music, with much of it consisting of his renditions of socialist standards.

Anyway, the content is great. The packaging, however, is marginal. It's just a cardboard sleeve. The discs slide in and out. There is nearly nothing by way of liner notes. For the price, you might hope for more. And Amazon is charging nearly twice what I paid new for this at a local record store (two Hamiltons!). Outrageous, especially when Bragg himself put a legend on the original cover of this disc telling people not to pay more than 3.99 English pounds for it. But, then, we're making the world safe for capitalism, right?
