Power, Emotion, Mysticism, Virtuosity...it's all here, live........2006-07-17
In the mid-70's, my younger brother and I would do our high school homework in separate rooms, listen to the radio, and yell out which station to tune into for the next great song. More often than not, it was Rochester's WSAY, a great and truly progressive rock station (on the AM dial!).
I only mention this because it was only there that you could hear in frequent rotation such classic songs as "Ice" by Crack the Sky, "Free Hand" by Gentle Giant, "Nowhere's Too Far For My Baby" by Frampton, or "Day of the Eagle" by Robin Trower. A belated "thank you" to WSAY for opening up my musical mind.
At that time, I was a folk-rock junkie beginning the transformation into a prog rock champion. I was not a fan of the blues, and I did not yet fully appreciate heavy electric guitar; but I knew there was talent and emotion in Trower's music, and I became an avid closet Trower collector and listener long after WSAY changed formats. This recording of a King Biscuit Flower Hour performance from 1977 shows Trower at his peak, and is a treasure for anyone who ever fell in love with this Englishman's unique style of electric blues/acid rock guitar.
James Dewar's vocals are great (always reminded me of David Clayton Thomas [from Blood, Sweat & Tears] doing an imitation of Jimi Hendrix!), and he gets a chance to focus on vocals-only here as bass duties are skillfully carried by Rustee Allen, while Bill Lordan plays all drums. Trower himself is flawless in his execution of these killer tunes, and you get to hear him talking and joking with an adoring crowd. He shines brightest on long slow jams, and we're treated to a couple of classics on the extended versions of "Daydreams" (12 minutes) and "Bridge of Sighs" (9 minutes).
This recording does a nice job of capturing the fun and excitement of the show. My only complaint is that the bass was mixed kind of low - to get a nice dynamic feel for this music, I suggest turning the bass way up on your stereo equalizer (especially so you get the most out of Allen's bass solo on "Messin' the Blues").
A fantastic 70-minute overview of Trower's music in the late 70's, I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind cd.
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.9/10; Performance = 8.5/10; Production = 8/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.8 ("4-1/2 stars")
A pleasant surprise.......2004-12-19
In Concert is a great performance by Trower's best line-up playing his best material.
His studio albums have always seemed too slick to me. This live recording adds some needed rough edges to the Trower sound. Although the late James Dewar's vocals could be a little cheesy at times, he's great on this one.
Okay, so Robin was influenced by Hendrix, tell me what guitar player from the last 30 years hasn't been? But it is not true that Trower was just a Jimi wannabe. He was a *peer* of Hendrix, one of many guitar players who explored a psychedelic twist on the blues in the 60s and 70's.
"Further on up the Road", is a Trower-ized version of the blues classic and it is THE shining jewel on this CD. This song alone is worth the price of the CD.
2004 is the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster and the 30th anniversary of Bridge of Sighs. I can't think of a better anniversary present than this album. Enjoy!
Holy S*&^!!!! That's all I have to say.......2004-10-25
This is the ultimate live album. Dewar's soulful thick voice and Robins GUITAR work is at its PEAK!!!!!!!
This is energized and raw. Just get it if your a Trower fan or just a guitar rock fan. This live album can NOT dissapoint.
Outta Sight!.......2001-07-02
If you're reading this review, then chances are you are already familiar with the music of Robin Trower. If you aren't, and you happen to enjoy Electric-Psychedelic-Acidrock-Blues, then rush out to any record store and score yourself a copy of Bridge of Sighs. If you like it, then you'll absolutely dig this previously unreleased 1977 gem from the vaults of The King Biscuit Flower Hour (it was never aired on the radio).
An undiluted blues/rock concert experience.......1998-07-30
James Dewar lets Rustee Allen play the bass and concentrates on the vocals, a perfect tradeoff. The band is having a great day and plays many of the greatest Robin Trower songs. All in all it's like being there with the band, esp since the whole concert is there without breaks and with many of the songs in extended versions. Nice surprises includes a very bluesy version of "Too Rolling Stoned" where the band deviates quite a bit from the studio version as well as a version of "Daydream" in a really slow tempo that allows one to hear all the nitty-gritty licks that Robin Trower plays in this tune. The album also includes possibly the best version of "Bridge Of Sighs" that Robin Trower has ever recorded. All in all this album is a true undiluted blues/rock concert experience with real musicians playing real instruments in front of a captivated audience. Even if you have all the studio versions of the songs you'll need this album to experience! the live Robin Trower sound.

Johnny Van Zant - 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2005-03-18
Another worthy archive live performance from the King Biscuit vaults.I'm sure that all of you most likely know that Johnny is currently the lead vocalist for the revamped Lynyrd Skynyrd. This 'King Biscuit' gig was recorded at a show in Jacksonville,Florida in June,1985.Apparently in the '80's,Van Zant had a decent solo career where he'd put out something like four, maybe five good southern rock lp's.Notable cuts here include "Two Plus Two","No More Dirty Deals","I'm A Fighter" and "In Your Eyes".Worth checking out for yourself.
Great Vintage Live Show From The Future Skynyrd Frontman.......2002-09-20
This is a great Johnny Van Zant live CD. "Two Plus Two" and "No More Dirty Deals" sing my feelings about being let down by so-called loyal peers; "You Gotta Believe" and "Rock Survivors" call for faith and perseverance; "Standing In The Darkness" is a searching ballad-turned-rocker of a person wondering who and what he is, was, and can be; and the rest just rocks. This is a great album; no one does shows like this anymore.
Johnny shows he is an entertainer in his own right........1999-06-11
Growing up the younger brother of the late-great and all-time best song writer Ronnie Van Zant; Johnny has been called to follow in his brothers footsteps. Knowing that music styles change this album contains some harder driven Southern Rock, while also containing AOR. You'll be pleasantly surprised on how well music followes in the Van Zant family. If you like good ole' rock'n'roll then you're sure to enjoy this.

Album Description
This 1982 concert features the group's biggest hits from the '70s and even a cover of 'California Dreamin''. America's trademark light folk-rock sound dominates the beginning of the show, but the more it progresses - rather surprisingly - the harder the band rocks out, culminating in the album-closing pair of number one hits, 'Sister Golden Hair' and 'A Horse with No Name'.

America is in rare form at there very best this is there best cd yet they just keep getting bette at each passing year awesome musicianship awesome. a must buy cd so hurry out & buy it today you,ll be glad ya did. george Bretzlaff Im 46 yrs old.
two singers, two levels of success "live" .......2005-08-28
I never thought I'd be one of those whiners who complains that one of the original band members ain't still there. BUT, after hearing this live selection, I think that Dan Peek WAS America.
Know that two members of the band sing on this live cd. One is great (e.g. check out Sandman! awesome live version). Also, be warned that one of the band members says "yippee" after several of the songs. Spare me! And Horse With No Name, should be called Song With No Singer! He trails off so many times, and seems intimidated by the role of singing it. Sorry to those who like this version. I did not.
Nevertheless, several songs are great. The addition of the Mommas & Pappas' song "California Dreamin' " is worth the price of the cd.
America - 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2005-06-07
I've always dug this AM pop/soft rock artist because even though they play what many would consider 'soft rock',America was ALWAYS cool to hear, whatever the mood or setting.Another memorable archive release from the King Biscuit Flower Hour's sacred vaults. This fourteen track disc's shindig was recorded somewhere in the summer of 1982.Most of the prime cuts are here, like "Tin Man","Ventura Highway",the timeless ballad "I Need You",their Mama&Papa's cover "California Dreamin'","Sister Golden Hair" and "Horse With No Name".I've seen these guys play live twice now and I even remember getting ahold of an audio bootleg cassette of one of their shows.Hard to believe, but there was VERY little difference between the bootleg and this release.Except the boot ran a bit bit longer in duration.A nice find.
A great album.......2004-04-23
The rock group America formed in 1969, when a group of teenage "Army brats" got together to make great music. Throughout the 1970s, they produced some of the finest musical numbers of the era - Ventura Highway, Tin Man, Sister Golden Hair, etc. After their 1978/9 reorganization, you probably thought that the best was over, right? Well, in this fantastic 1982 live concert, they showed that they still had it.
They played some oldies, like Tin Man, and some new ones like You Can Do Magic. My personal favorite was Inspector Mills. This is a great album, with lots of great tunes. Yes, it's live, but it sounds great, with those America tunes coming through loud and clear. I love this album, and highly recommend it to you!
A CONCERT I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE BEEN AT!!.......2003-01-24
I am part of a generation of fans of AMERICA who discovered their music in the early 80's with songs like "You Can Do Magic" and "Right Before Your Eyes". But after hearing some of their earlier songs, I became a big fan from then on. Needless to say, this album is one of the best live recordings I have ever heard!
This album, recorded in September 1982, covers most of AMERICA's biggest hits and includes songs from the album "A View From The Ground", another great collection from AMERICA. My favorite tracks include; "Tin Man", "Daisy Jane", "Love On The Vine", "Ventura Highway", "I Need You", "You Can Do Magic", "Sister Golden Hair", and "A Horse With No Name".
There are two songs that I wish they had included on this album, and that would be "Lonely People" and "Right Before Your Eyes".
If you only ever buy one AMERICA live album, make sure it is this one. IT IS AS CLOSE TO PERFECT AS YOU CAN GET!

This was previously only available through their website.
Customer Reviews:
Buyer Beware.......2007-06-24
There are currently four different versions of this release circulating. The first came out in 2000 with a slip so you could get three extra songs and a Todd interview by downloading it from the King Bissuit web site and the enhanced cd took you right there. In 2001 JVC in Japan did a version called Live, that included a bonus song which was The Ikon/Freedom Fighters which was a download song. In 2002, this was released again but with the extra stuff on a bonus disc. In 2004 this was released yet again as the Best Of Todd Rundgren Live. This release is made up of three different shows, two of which had already been released. The 1978 show is Live in NYC '78 and the '85 show is A Cappella both of which are currently available in the box set Can't Sop Running. The 5/8/77 show is actually a Utopia concert and is were the bonus The Ikon/Freedom Fighters is from. This show is the best performed of the three. I really wish that they had just released that performance and bypassed everything else. If you're going to get this, make sure to contact the seller and that you get the two disc version like I have. If you can't find that, then go with the import with the bonus song.
Excellent CD.......2003-08-26
This is a great CD if your a Todd fan, outstanding live performances and good sound quality....if you like this then check out "Back To The Bars".....buy this cd today!
"The Icon" and "Freedum fighter" is very good!!.......2002-07-20
I have a same title CD of Import version. This CD contains a bonus truck: The Icon and Freedum fighter. I think these performances are very good and are the most beutiful and strongest tunes in 70's American hard and progressive Rock. I recomennd Import version, if you want this one.
the A Capella material could've been better..........2001-01-17
but the rest is great!
This CD is a compilation of three Todd concerts, all recorded for broadcast on the syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour. The first (and weakest of the three shows) is from Rundgren's A Capella tour in 1985. Starting with an interesting version of "Real Man," Todd and his 10-piece `band' (actually 10 vocalists--there were no instruments on the tour--tapes were used when necessary) played, clapped, and stomped thru a selection of songs from his latest album, and a smattering of hits. The highlight here is the always beautiful "Can We Still Be Friends." With all the people onstage, the vocal arrangement really comes to life.
"The Last Ride" kicks off the next group of tunes, this time from the 1977 Schaffer Music Festival in New York. Todd wails on the guitar with reckless abandon, and hits all the high vocal parts with ease. After a medley of "Eastern Intrigue" and "Love of the Common Man," Rundgren bursts into the rocker, "Couldn't I Just Tell You." Always a crowd pleaser, this particular rendition is outstanding.
The last six tracks are taken from The Bottom Line in '78 (note to the tape traders out there: this is not the same Bottom Line show that circulates). Rundgren's voice is a bit weak on "Real Man" (the high notes are notoriously difficult in a live setting), but aside from that, Todd's in fine form--both vocally and instrumentally. As you'd expect, "Black Maria" is stunning, and the medley of "I'm So Proud," "Ooh Baby Baby," "La La Means I Love You" and "I Saw the Light" is always enjoyable.
As a special bonus to those who purchase the CD, you can download 3 more songs that don't appear on the CD ("Honest Work," "Freedom Fighters" and "Born to Synthesize"), plus an interview with Todd from August 2000. If you'd rather not download all this, there's a coupon inside the CD allowing you to get the bonus material on CD. Collectors take note: the bonus CD lists the second track as "The Wheel"--this is incorrect. One other thing I wanted to mention... Yes, all of the tracks from the New York shows are also on the excellent Back to the Bars album--these are not the same performances.
To sum things up, this is another great release from the folks at King Biscuit. Whether you're a long-time Todd fan, or just discovering this music, this disc is a sure bet.
Nothing New Here.......2001-01-02
This CD is O.K. but it doesn't offer much that can't be found on other live Todd or Utopia CDs. The Acapella versions of Real Man and the Lost Horizon medley were "different" but I didn't like 'em. I'll take the full band versions every time. The other songs were no better or worse than what can be heard on Back to the Bars. The mix/recording quality is only fair.
Additionally, I found the fade-in and fade-out of each song detracted from the feeling of a live event. I would have preferred cross fading one song into the next.
If you are looking for some interesting live recordings of Todd, check out the "Somewhere/Anywhere" CD. It has rare live recordings of songs from the first Runt Album, A Utopia version of Open My Eyes, Utopia cover versions of Beatles and Who songs, Etc.

Album Description
Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee on January 12, 1984, King Biscuit Flower Hour: In Concert finds Girlschool in the midst of their transition from the sort of female-biker punk-metal that made them Motorhead's soul sisters, to a more commercialized pop-metal sound.
Customer Reviews:
Girlschool - 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2004-03-14
Another really great rocking release from the radio show that used to be a Sunday night ritual for true FM rock&roll fans. Some may not remember, but MOST of those Sunday night shows on the King Biscuit wouldn't air the artist's entire set.The King Biscuit label has seen to it to release EACH artist's gig complete. This fifteen song set by the heavy-duty Girlschool really treats fans of the all girl ensemble to something special.Even thought every track kicks ass,the more memorable tunes are "Play Dirty","Hit And Run","Demolition Boys",their ZZ Top cover "Tush","C'mon,Let's Go" and "Race With The Devil"(my personal Girlschool favorite).Includes a ten page booklet packed with interesting facts.Such as,did you know before the band became Girlschool that guitarist Kathy Valentine(Go-Go's) was with them?I hung out with the girls after catching a gig of theirs. They told me they'd like to be remembered as the female alter ego of Motorhead.
Solid Live Album.......2002-05-04
I saw Girlschool play live almost 20 years ago and was impressed at how good a show they did so i was intrigued when i saw this cd.Their performance is solid and there's a good selection of material. They hadn't started using keyboards live yet so the music still has a raw guitar sound.
The lineup is Kelly Johnson(lead guitar -vocals)Kim Mcauliffe(vocals-guitar)Denise Dufort(drums),Gil Weston(bass).
This is worth getting if you like heavy guitars and catchy vocals.
Live Girlschool!.......2000-06-30
I first heard Girlschool when they made the "St.Valentines day Massacre" with Motorhead, featuring the song "please don't touch".So I went and bought the Girlschool album and later their next album "Screaming Blue Murder".I had kind of forgotten about them until I came across them here on Amazon.com. This live cd is pretty good. I don't remember hearing some of the songs ,but "Hit and Run" and "Screaming Blue murder",2 of my favorites, are on there. I saw them open for the Scorpions and they really could rock! While this doesn't capture the true energy of being there in person,it comes pretty close. The guitars come through loud and clear and there's always the rythm of the thundering drum beat and pounding bass lines. The vocals are a very pleasant change compared to what was then an all male voalist metal scene. Were they the first "heavy metal" girl group?I would say so.I think any Girlschool fan would like this.

Customer Reviews:
JAE Live at the Spectrum.......2005-09-06
My initial reaction on hearing this classic recording from the King Biscuit vaults was how great it sounded over twenty years after being recorded. Frustrated by the lack of live " Who " activity at the time, John formed his own band and took it out on the road in the UK and America, etc.
Kicking off with "Heaven and Hell ", the band played a tight set including John's songs, Who material, and a different version of the Buddy Holly classic
" Not Fade Away " taken at a faster pace than the original.
The interview with John and Who sound man Bob Pridden is interesting too. The only reason I didn't give this CD five stars is because the music content seems a little short measure.
I would recommend this CD to anyone who has more than a casual interest in the Who.
John Entwistle-'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2005-04-09
Another great sounding archive release from the King Biscuit sacred vaults. This time,we go back to March,1975 at the Philly Spectrum when The Who's bassist John Entwistle(R.I.P.)under takes his very first solo tour.Probably enjoyed The Who songs the most, like "Heaven And Hell","Whiskey Man",the novel "Boris The Spider" and "My Wife".Plus,I also dug his Buddy Holly cover "Not Fade Away".Line-up:John-bass&vocals,Robert Johnson-guitar&vocals,Mike Decan-keyboards,Jeff Daily-sax and Graham Deacon-drums.The 12-minute plus interview isn't bad.Worth checking out.
"John Entwistle - Live At Leeds".......2002-12-04
This is a *great* CD. All the magic of The Who's "Live At Leeds", wrapped up into a 1975 solo John Entwistle performance. Absolutely amazing. Don't hesitate - just buy it!
John Entwistle Live, it doesn't any better.......1999-07-15
This CD showcases the great John Entwistle during one of his mid 70's solo shows. It combines his great bass playing and his equally powerful voice. The interview on the CD is also very insightful.
The music is great: the interview could have been omitted........1998-09-13
Approximately 45 minutes of music and 13+ minutes of interview.
The 9 tracks, recorded in 1975, are a good mix of Entwistle's solo work as well as classics from the Who such as Heaven and Hell, My Wife and of course Boris the Spider. The sound quality, heavy on the bass (no surprise here), is very good. KBFH have done a creditable job on this CD. While the interview could easily have been omitted, it does no harm and is somewhat of a treat for Entwistle fans. The liner notes are adequate and could have benefited from some further input from Entwistle such as in the Rhino Records release: Thunderfingers: The Best of John Entwistle.
All in all, a fine recording and a must for any Entwistle/Who fan.

Album Description
Uriah Heep's King Biscuit Flower Hour was recorded in San Diego in 1974 and features 11 tracks digitally remixed & remastered from original multi-track masters.
Customer Reviews:
Ack!.......2003-05-11
Oh my god, what were they thinking releasing this?!? Heep were (and still are) a killer live band (listen to any of several recordings from "Live 1973" to the recent "Acoustically Driven" for good examples), but this has to be one of the worst live CDs ever recorded; the sound is muddled, and singer David Byron (whose alcoholism eventually killed him) is so obviously and thoroughly plastered that it's a wonder he could stand, much less attempt to sing. Avoid this one at all costs.
Great band, crummy recording.......2003-04-19
If this live set from Uriah Heep was truly digitally remastered from the original then the engineers must have been in the throes of dementia because the sound here is so muddled and turgid that many tracks are, quite frankly, unlistenable.
Uriah Heep was/is one of my favorite hard rock bands of all time -- particularly the line-up featured on this CD. They toured relentlessly and were known for their galvanizing live performances. But the King Biscuit Flower Hour -- the vaunted live concert radio show from the '70s -- must have caught the band on an off night. The playing is sloppy, many of the harmonies are off, and lead vocalist David Byron (one of the finest and most underrated singers in rock 'n' roll) is having a particularly tough time of it. He repeatedly hits sour notes, falling off key, and other times he gives up altogether and just kind of talks his way through it.
Compared with 1973's "Uriah Heep Live" -- this King Biscuit set is an unmitigated mess. I can only cringe when I think of what it must have sounded like before it was "digitally remastered." Was this what the poor radio listeners heard the night it was originally broadcast? I remember King Biscuit as having pretty good sounding shows.
Do not look to this as a definitive sounding Heep album. They are a much better band this. But the re-issuing of concerts like "King Biscuit Presents..." and the even worse "Live at Shepperton - '74" do nothing but tarnish the band's reputation.
There are some redeeming qualities to "King Biscuit Presents" and that is the set list. While the old, creaky standards are predictibly present (Easy Livin', Stealin', July Morning, Gypsy, etc.), hearing songs like "Seven Stars" and "Sweet Freedom" performed lived is a nice treat for longtime Heepsters.
"King Biscuit Presents Uriah Heep" is for true longtime fans who need to have everything Heep has produced. But you'll enjoy "Uriah Heep Live 1973" much more.
The Inspiration for Spinal Tap.......2002-02-07
This recording comes across as being pompous, overblown arena rock. The playing is sloppy and the singer seems drunk or high, inserting expletives in his dialog for shock value. I had the original LP of Uriah Heep Live, and hoped this performance would equal it. (I was unable to find "Uriah Heep Live" on CD when I purchased the "King Biscuit Presents" disc. Now that the "Uriah Heep Live" is available it seems to be missing some songs from the original LP release.)
Uriah Heep was a great band , but this performance shows the effects of the road and substance abuse. I guess some things are best left to memories.
Heep on top of it!.......2001-10-23
I have been a Heepster for a long time now. I finally got to see them in concert (albeit a short 1/2 hour opening slot!) and immediately went out and bought the older concert recordings. Not all recordings give you a true representation of what the actual band is like in concert, but they give you an inkling. I like this CD a lot. The sound is good. This is the ultimate version of the band. Byron and Hensley were great. Wish we could have a reunion of these old guys! I think this one is in league with the Shepperton and Live 73 sets, with 73 being a better representation. Looking forward to some older filmed footage to make it out in the world now. Mick and the boys, YOU ROCK!!!
nice to be back in san diego.......2001-10-10
oh my god!i cant believe no one else has reviewed this cd!now keep in mind this was recorded in 1974..and this is a true live performance, little or no doctring of the tapes..at first listen i felt david byrons vocals were a bit weak..(especially during stealin)still after several listens this is a great cd..for uraih heep fans ..the music from the band is excellant!this cd provides a great song list which includes sweet freedom which isnt on the other 2 live cds that i have from this line up.david byron is my favorite uriah heep singer...so that said there are better performances by him other than on this cd(such as live 73)but david is a singer that has moments of brillance so i say buy this cd,forget the imperfections ,crank it up and hear one of the greatest bands ever...so its nice to be back in san diego!

Lynyrd Skynyrd - King Biscuit Presents Live In Concert.......2007-06-18
Lynyrd Skynyrd - King Biscuit Presents Live In Concert
Excellent live album, recorded in Cardiff Wales on November 6, 1975, with Skynyrd lineup circa the GIMME BACK MY BULLETS album of Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle, and Billy Powell.
Tracks are:
-------------
- Double Trouble
- I Ain't The One
- The Needle and The Spoon
- Saturday Night Special
- Gimme 3 Steps
- I Got The Same Old Blues
- Simple Man
- Whiskey Rock'n'Roller
- Call Me The Breeze
- T For Texas
- Sweet Home Alabama
- Freebird
Originally broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this was later to be one of the remixed & officially released CDs on the KB label. But for reasons unknown to me this album is extremely rare, and I think it was recalled by the label before it was ever released (?), yet still some copies (luckily) did get out into circulation.
My copy of this has the band name mispelled on the back cover as "Lynryrd Skynyrd", and the front cover is printed slightly off center. Yet this is NOT a bootleg!! It is the real mccoy!!!! I wonder if I got a pre-release prior to the official release, and it was delayed to correct the printing errors, but then around that time the KB label folded, thus never getting around to giving this the full release it deserves. (?????)

Customer Reviews:
Great Production!.......2002-07-25
Elvin Bishop was really coming into his own at this time. After his years with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and his extensive studio work this was his time to shine. And this performance is an extraordinary piece of work. The production is sterling live work. Micky Thomas was just being introduced and Bishop's backup band were consumate professionals. The crowd is with them and this concert rocks from the opening song to the last. Not a bad song in it. A really great find. Thank God for the Biscuit material preserving such performances!
