5 out of 5 stars don't worry about skipping over tracks, the whole thing rocks.......2006-04-19

Hey if you're a fan of ska music, hell, if you're a fan of music at ALL be sure to listen to Why Do They Rock So Hard. This album is filled with the genius of Reel Big Fish's wacky lyrics that they are so well known for, along with their original and fun sound the band carries. If you're looking for the usual stuff that is being played on the radio these days, you won't find it in Why Do They Rock So Hard? The whole production is something impressive that you'll be listening to for years to come.

This is possibly the best album that Reel Big Fish has released, in my personal opinion. If you're trying to find out if this band fits your musical tastes, then this album is definitely the ice breaker. There aren't a lot of bands out there that have the unique ability to keep the audience's attention throughout a whole CD, making every song another great track that everyone can agree on. The band works very hard and keeps the fans in mind, which is one of the main components to their success.

Overall, if you're looking for something different that really stands out, buy a copy of Why Do They Rock So Hard? You definitely won't be disappointed with your decision.

5 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring.......2006-02-03

Wow, what more can I say than Wow.

Why do they Rock so Hard is the followup to the commercially explosive Turn the Radio Off and it does not disappoint. Well, that's a lie. It seems to disappoint a few traditional ska fans who never really liked RBF to begin with. Others dislike it because it has a little bit less Ska than its predecessor (but not much). As far as Ska records are concerned, it is indeed inferior to Reel Big Fish's major label debut. However, as an overall music album it offers a much tighter balance of style and a much more impressive display of musicianship. Frontman Aaron Barrett has perfected his glam-rock style guitar work into a powerful and somewhat complex pop-punk arrangement. Bassist Matt Wong steps the funk up to the next level and Scott Klopfenstein shows off why him and Aaron are one of the best vocal duos on the Ska scene. The horn section doesn't falter either. Retaining the legendary lineup from Turn the Radio Off (which would leave before finishing Cheer Up!), Dan Regan leads Tavis and Grant through tight horn lines and beautifully crafted solos, especially on the remake of the demo In the Pit (now called Thank You for Not Moshing). This album is the second in what the band considers its trilogy and gives the message "Now that we're popular, how come everyone hates us?" Lyrically, that seems to be the overall theme, such as in Down in Flames or the album highlight Somebody Hates Me.

The band remakes several cuts from their self-released debut Everything Sucks, inlcuding a slowed-down I'm Cool, a beefed up I Want Your Girlfriend to be my Girlfriend and a glossied version of the faux-ballad Big Star. Other highlights of the album include The Set-Up, Brand New Song and the fidgety Kid's Don't Like It. Plus the band tosses in a wonderful collaberation with New York ska icon Coolie Ranx as Song #3.

Downsides? Sure there are some. There is a pointlessly long and boring jam after the last track which drags the album on a bit longer than it should and that in itself may warrant a star off if you get annoyed by that. There are what some have dubbed "filler" on the album (16 tracks usually means filler-ahead) such as Scott's a Dork, She's Famous or You Don't Know. Although others would say (including myself) that these cuts are equally amazing.

Recommended for fans of glam-rock, the 80's, punk/ska, pop-punk or just really happy music. Not at all recommended for those who hate the third wave, the Reel Big Fish, Ska or any combination of the three. Not the album to start your RBF collection with, though; Turn the Radio Off is a much better intro to the catalogue.

5 BIG BIG stars!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD From The Best Band Ever!.......2005-08-15

I was a hard rocker only listening to the heaviest stuff. Then, I heard this CD, now like all i listen to is ska. This is the best CD ever made!

Somebody Hates Me 10/10: An awesome opener, this song got my attention right away.
Brand New Song 10/10: A great happy ska song with pretty good lyrics.
She's Famous Now 9/10: Another great ska song but the lyrics aren't the best.
You Don't Know 10/10: An awesome song, not up-beat tho. I've wanted to say some of this stuff to some people.
The Set Up (You Need This) 10/10: Another sweet ska song. Great harmonizing, great horns, great everything.
Thank You For Not Moshing 9/10: Pretty good, I'm not to big on the Jamaican guy singing and stuff in the verse.
I'm Cool 10/10: Sweet and a great change. This is the best out of the 3 versions of I'm Cool.
I Want Your Girlfriend To Be My Girlfriend Too 10/10: My favorite on the CD, great guitar, great horns, great lyrics, great everything. I've wanted to say this to some people.
Everything Is Cool 10/10: This is a very weird song. It's kinda ska-metal, but its a change and a great song.
Song #3 7/10: My least favorite on this CD, I don't really like the Jamaican guy singing.
Scott's A Dork 10/10: Pretty much just a sweet song.
Big Star 7/10: Too slow and it seems sorta self-centered kinda with the lyrics.
The Kids Don't Like It 10/10: This is a sweet song with a very good sound.
Down In Flames 10/10: My second favorite on the CD. It has great horns and guitar and lyrics, they all go together perfect.
We Care 9/10: Great song and I like how they thank you for listening, but it didn't catch my attention that much.
Victory Over Peter Bones 10/10: So relaxing.

This is one of the best CDs I've ever bought, and now you gotta go BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Before... No Really It Is.......2005-07-29

In My Opinion this cd is better than "Turn The Radio Off"
but only slightly, their both pretty equal but both different
Some of the songs here are slower
and 1 or 2 even border on reggae (sp?)
I think there is 1 filler song and thats it
My favorite songs are Brand New Song, and Song #3
OH and some of these lyrics are uber Funnay

4 out of 5 stars ska rules!.......2005-06-22

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous albums, but still satisfying.......2001-09-14

"Why do they rock so hard?",the follow up to "Turn The Radio Off" by Reel Big Fish was entertaining to listen to. It is true that it isn't as good as the previous albums, but then again it's different from the previous albums. RBF seemed to mellow down on most of the tracks this time around, but at the same time didn't loose their edge. Tracks that made this album kick were "Somebody hates me", "Shes famous now", "The Set up (you need this", "I want your girlfriend..", "The kids don't like it" & "Down in flames". Pick this one up if you like Reel Big Fish and own the previous albums, but if you are a first time buyer check out "Turn The Radio Off".

4 out of 5 stars A Must Buy For Anyone.......2001-06-20

If you aren't a Reel Big Fish fan, buy this CD. You will instantly love it. If you are a Reel Big Fish fan, then what are you waiting for? But it! This CD rocks. There are plenty of awesome songs, like Somebody Hates Me, The Set Up (You Need This), and definately Down In Flames. My favorite is Down In Flames. It has to be one of the best songs Reel Big Fish has ever done and is one of the best ska songs! it is very catchy, it is not 2 minutes long (try 4:49), and it takes seconds to fall in love with it. Slightly better than their other album "Turn The Radio Off", it is just a rockin' CD. But, it still has its "ok" songs that you might skip when listening to it. This is why I couldn't give it 5 stars. But this is NO reason NOT to buy it -- about 90% of the music on this CD is ska-punk goodness that you'll eat right up!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, But have give it time.......2001-04-01

When I first bought this cd I thought it sucked. Now, I'm quite glad that I bought it. This cd is much differant than the first. It has more of a rock/punk feel to. Aaron's guitar has done a wonderful job of becomming the main source for music. The horns still exist, they just take a backseet in this cd. The bass follows the same path as the horns which sucks cuz I love the bass. If and when you buy this cd, you must listen to it a few times. Don't give up just as soon as you hear it. After a while the first five songs grown on you. Then the hidden track comes alive. It is quite funny yet not quite appropriate. The parental advisory sticker is nessacary due the number of times they say the "f" word. All in all, it is an awesome cd. Just give it time.

3 out of 5 stars They only sorta rock hard.......2001-02-12

I'm gonna review this c.d. in two parts the first and second half of the c.d.

1rst half. Man this c.d. kicks bum the songs are catchy, fun, and good to hear.Reel Big Fish is a great ska band.Tracks like Brand New Song ang I Want Your Girlfriend to be my Girlfriend to are catchy and make you want to bust a move.

2nd half. Well this sucks. The tracks have all gone from catchy to wha?Their just not good and the hidden track is sensless rambeling. What happened to the good stuff?

So as you can see it starts off great and kinda slides downhill.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, please.......2003-10-23

This a great disc, probably the best intro to Ska and Reel Big Fish there is. A good mix of Ska and Rock that leans more toward the Ska side, (Cheer Up! Is more rock, TTRO more ska)the songs are almost all upbeat and unbelievably catchy. The fist time you hear songs like "She's Famous Now" and "The Set-Up," they will be stuck in your head for weeks. Plenty of people say that this band is "starter" ska, because they can produce fans who will then get into other ska bands. But as a former ska-head, I can say that they are one of very few bands in the genre that I still want to listen to after expanding my horizons... the qualities that make them "starter," such as their catchiness and connections to other genres of music, make them a band for everyone to listen to. This CD was not made by some kids trying to cash in on the late 1990s ska trend. This was made by actual professional musicians. It's good music that a huge base of fans should be able to appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars RBF rocks, literally.......2001-10-17

If you are new to ska, RBF is a great band to start with. Not only are the lyrics catchy, the songs also include some great hooks (guitar riffs, horn lines, ect.). This album is not just ska, it contains many elements of different styles, including: some Jazz, a bit of punk, a spit of 80's retro, and even a tny tiny dose of rap. The songs are fast, loud, and make you want to sing and maybe even skank (that's a dance for ska). This album is a first pedestal for a ska fan, a must have if you will. So in conclusion buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD.......1999-11-10

If you want to buy this CD, do it. Its a seriosly cool CD. Anything done buy The RBF is cool. And even if you dont like it, you can say you have it and hang out with other really cool RBF fans. Listen to me. They are the ONLY people you should be hanging with. And becides, its a cool CD anyways. You got nothing to lose. Oh, and while your on AMIZON.COM, go over to the BSB page and right a bad review. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Pilfer's Reel Big Fish is gonna start your party now . . ........1999-11-01

These guys are hysterical. Ska doesn't get better than Reel Big Fish . . . and maybe everybody DOES play guitar, but Aaron Barrett's vocals and lead guitar and Scott's back-up vocals and goofy charisma lend this album and all RBF albums the origionality, sarcasm, and vitality that the cynics of the party world love. So let the rhythm get you dancin' . . .

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this CD.......1999-10-21

This is a great cd I highly recommend this to anyone who likes great ska music...
