Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

THIS CD IS FANTASTIC. THE VOCALS ARE SO STRONG IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT THEY ARE IN ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH, AND ITALIAN. THE PASSION COMES THRU LOUD AND CLEAR. I CAN'T BELIEVE I WAITED SO LONG TO GET THIS. IT'S PLAYED NEARLY EVERY DAY. EVEN MY 4 AND 7 Y/O SING TO IT.

This was the first Josh Groban album that I bought. I heard his Live at the Greek album in a friend's vehicle and decided I needed some of his work. I have since bought all of his available albums. This is still probably my favorite. It is an excellent example of his talent and the music is beautiful! I definitely recommend it to any music fan.

Consider the curious fate of singer-songwriter Laura Nyro's 1968 big-label bow: though it contained no less than three songs ("Stoned Soul Picnic," "Sweet Blindness," and "Eli's Coming") that became hits (the first two for Fifth Dimension, the last for Three Dog Night), Nyro's own endlessly influential collection barely dented the Top 200. And in an era of supposed pop emancipation and enlightenment, Nyro was booed off the stage at the vaunted Monterey Pop Festival a year earlier. Those facts merely hint at the true gifts and stubborn instincts of an artist who took her cue for hook writing from the Brill Building's prime, then seamlessly fused it to her far-ranging passions for soul, jazz, gospel, and no small amount of personal drama. Carole King was seldom this exotic and compelling, nor Joni Mitchell so pop perfect. "Once It Was Alright Now (Farmer Joe)" even recalls Brian Wilson's most ambitious musical gambits, its suite format playfully interspersing three different tunes and styles, standing the standard verse-chorus-verse form on its head in the bargain. Long a treasured musical touchstone for other artists (Nyro influenced everyone from Phoebe Snow to Tori Amos), this reissued edition now contains beautiful, spare solo demos for "Lu," "Stoned Soul Picnic," and "Emmie" as bonus tacks, along with newly penned liner notes. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars CRACKED CASE.......2007-07-03

There's nothing bad to say about Laura Nyro and this fabulous album. But the "new" CD arrived in a cracked case, I won't use this seller again.

5 out of 5 stars quintessential 60s sound!.......2007-05-11

laura nyro hit her stride with this album. she started doing more or most of her background vocals (a nyro trademark) and she was playing her own keyboards with so much fervor. her playing was the perfect match for her unique mezzo voice.

and her voice is the perfect match for her lyrics and melodies. nyro was a prodigious songwriter and it seems odd that she wouldn't have the same size of success with her tunes others had. but that could only be because columbia was always at a loss on how to commodify a woman until mariah carey came along. of course that could be because carey is a willing participant in her own overexposure.

but they always manage to get the best at one time or another--aretha, janis joplin, mahalia jackson, doris day--and laura nyro can join that list many times over with a collection like 'eli'.

5 out of 5 stars I'll Take It To My Desert Island Any Day.......2007-04-05

Alright, I know this review will catch a lot of flack from devoted Laura Nyro fans. First off I think Eli & The 13th Confession is one of the true masterworks of the sixities. Proof enough is the fact that three of the songs became huge hits for other artists; Three Dog Night (Eli's Comming), Fifth Diminsion (Sweet Blindness) and Stoney End (Barbara Strisand). She certainly caught lightening in a jar, seamlessly blending folk, gospel, blues and jazz. At the tender age of twenty Nyro established herself as one of the sixties premiere singer-songwriters.

So why do I expect to catch flack amongst the Nyro faithful? Well despite all the superlatives heaped upon Eli, I find little else in her subsequent works to get very excited about. New York Tenderberry wich followed Eli some ten months later was dark and brooding by comparison. With the exception of Time And Love, most of the melodies seemed ackward and plodding. Some I find downright depressing. Christmas & Beads of Sweat followed the same pattern. In fact it wasn't until "Gonna Take A Miracle", a collection of sixties soul staples, that I found myself once again enjoying her music. Collaborating with Labelle, aka Pattie Labelle & The Blue Bells on classic material like Jimmy Mack, Spanish Harlem, Nowhere To Run and You Really Got A Hold On Me truly was a miracle.

Again, I know most will disagree with me, but I never felt that any of her other albums ever quite achieved the heights of Eli. I've played it to death and it never comes up short for me. True it's just one album, but I'll take it to my desert island any day.

4 out of 5 stars The Ambiguity of Genius.......2007-02-28

Laura Nyro was a gifted song writer and I loved the sound of her voice. If she was guilty of suicidal screeching, as has been suggested by some, what does that say about every other over paid rock diva? But honestly, this album has always left me a bit chilled. The landscape is bleak. There is a good groove going on Lucky, I never understood 'Dig those potatoes.' I wish I could have been there to talk her out of that line. Timer has wonderful potential, but oh that introduction. The recording of Sweet Blindness, endearing song, is a mess. There are under-appreciated gems here, December's Boudoir and The Confession. Don't dismiss this album out of hand, no artist could make a more penetrating statement about urban life. Some say it took them years to "Get" Laura Nyro. She grabbed me on my first hearing as a young teen-ager and never let go. If there is a more gifted singer-song writer out there, I don't know who it is.

5 out of 5 stars Still can sing the whole thing.......2007-02-21

I can still sing my way all the way through this entire album, just as I could 40 years ago!! The best! Something for a real singer to warm her pipes on! I still LOVE this album! Always will.

3 out of 5 stars Did Skid Row get back together? this is some great 80's metal all the way!.......2007-07-12

When I first listened to this disc, I honestly thought this was a new Skid Row record! The singer sounds a lot like Sebastian Bach at times. That isn't a bad thing at all!

This is a great time to be an 80's metalhead. Good, pure metal is making a comeback (thanks to the Showdown, 3 Inches of Blood, Hammerfall, Dream Evil and the like) This disc has great guitar work, lots of double bass drum and a very clear sound.

The only thing I don't like is all the profanity. I understand angst and emotion, and can understand when sometimes a profanity just expresses everything you need to say. But these guys throw F bombs around carelessly and makes them sound stupid and illiterate.

If they could write some smart lyrics to go with this awesome metal music, I'd have given them a 5 star review, no problem!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars simply amazing..........2007-02-05

This was my first Josh Groban album and definitely not my last. I've never been fond of opera for the simple reason that I disliked not knowing the words. Clearly that is not really the problem because as far as I'm concerned Josh can sing to me any language he wants. He has a rich smooth sound that reaches deep inside. I initially purchased this CD for "You Raise Me Up," and discovered a wealth of inspiring music. In mi mancherai (il postino), the duet with Joshua Bell is heart rendingly beautiful. My favorite is "When You Say You Love Me." It's romantic and touching. Throughout, Josh demonstrates a remarkable capacity for variation in his taste in music and his skill in presenting it. This extended version included a DVD that clued me into his latest project AWAKE, which I'm glad I purchased as soon as it became available. I hope to see much more by Josh soon.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Voice!.......2007-01-09

This album has inspired me to begin learning Italian. I learned the words to "Oceano" by heart almost immediately. Not a single song on this album do I not like. Josh is an incredible singer--one of the best voices I have heard in a long time. This is actually the second time I have purchased this album, because I wanted to get the accompanying "Making Of..." DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music.......2006-06-13

This is the first album I bought from this artist and I loved it so much I bought all of them and then flew to Las Vegas to see the first concert I have ever been to--that sounds silly since I am over 60 and really think the music is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Closer by Josh Groban.......2005-09-08

I am a big fan of Josh Groban so this CD is one of my favorites. His song, "You Raise Me Up" was recently sung at a dear friend's funeral, and there was not a dry eye in the church. Josh really delivers the message of each of his songs in such a professional and musically perfected manner. Keep on recording, Josh, because we all love you!

SSH

5 out of 5 stars Josh Groban....extended edition.......2005-05-11

With the additional tracks Mi Morena and She's Out of My Life, Josh shows even more versatility to his second studio album, Closer.
Never ceasing to be amazing, Josh fills every note with a musicality and passion that many young pop stars seem to be incapable of commandeering.
Josh's musicality clearly shines through as he shows his ability to not only sing like an angel but also compose lyrics, orchestrate arrangements, and accompany himself on the piano.
A must for fans of his first album and his unique style.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-04-14

Ill Nino is a good band, has a few different things that make them good. The funniest thing about this band is there live shows. I saw them in Vegas and they bring an aucoustic guitar on stage, play it for about 3-5 seconds, and someone would lug it off stage. I dont know if they do this every night, but really funny to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as first one, but still a good album........2007-04-13

It will be hard to beat their debut album, but I enjoyed this one very much. They stay true to form, not having changed their sound at all. They don't need to. They sound different from everyone else and that is what makes them interesting. If you're into trying out different styles of heavy music, I would seriously try these guys out, but start with the debut disc, Revolution/Revolucion. There are some great hispanic melodies thrown into the chaos, and they spice things up a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Made me feel beter.......2006-10-02

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal cd.......2006-07-31

i have had this cd in my car for months on end, i love the latin sound it has at times. i never get tired of it no matter how many times i hear it. even my parrot sings along! btw- their first cd is also an all time fave. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Good album, from an average band.......2006-05-08

Confession is my favourite Ill Nino album, but all fine (except One Nation Underground). The two percussionist plays great, the vocal is good, and the songs are melodius & near to perfect...The softess song's "Numb",and the heaviest is "Te Amo...I Hate You".Well,I can't say lot of negative things with this album.A don't give 4 stars for this, cuz' it's much better and more creative than other popular nu-metal/metalcore bands. And why 5 stars ? Just listen the music, and you'll know.

5 out of 5 stars Great, definitely go with this and TAC.......2005-08-31

Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.

If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-07-03

I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

3 out of 5 stars Bought it used - thank God!.......2005-06-17

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.

However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.

I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)

Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.

As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.

*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.

*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.

*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.

*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.

*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.

*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.

*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).

*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!

Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!

I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.

For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)

French director François Ozon's international hit manages to spoof both convoluted film whodunits and overblown Hollywood musicals: Agatha Christie as envisioned by Baz Luhrmann. One of the romp's chief joys is having eight of modern French cinema's most accomplished actresses take their turns in elaborately staged song and dance numbers, performances that compose this soundtrack's first half. Those showcases range from Ludivine Sagnier's loopy, '60s a-go-go take on "Papa T'es Plus dans L'Coup" through Fanny Ardant's breezy Parisian jazz, Isabelle Huppert's world-weary "Message Personnel," and Catherine Deneuve's tango-tinged "Toi Jamais." Coupled with Krishna Levy's masterfully earnest orchestral score (which offers a few fond nods to such '40s Bernard Herrmann romantic classics as Jane Eyre), the film's campy delights are crucially delivered deadpan and with nary a knowing wink, a tack that ensures its musical triumph--tongue firmly in cheek, or otherwise. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!.......2006-07-19

This is simply an amazing recording! James Macmillan is one of the best composers of our time and this recording confirms that fact.
The first work,"The Confession of Isobel Gowdie" was Macmillan's first "hit" which he wrote as a kind of requiem in honor of the woman who was wrongly accused of witchcraft and was burned at the stake. Although the two earlier recordings of this work are great, this one trumps them all. One can debate that it is because the composer himself is the conductor, but I'm not so sure. He is certainly an established conductor in his own right.
Knowing that this is an overall loud piece, he very cleverly has some of the fortissimo moments toned down somewhat so that it doesn't bang your ears too much. Yet he still maintains the power and attitude that makes the piece work. This is just one of many elements that make this performance so good.
The other piece, "Symphony No. 3 (Silence)" is nothing short of remarkable. The subtitle of this symphony is based on a unique concept where the powerful aspects of this work are rooted in the flow of the musical material and the key moments where it stops and then starts again. This concept really comes to play midway through the Symphony where after many minutes of insane musical mayhem, there comes a dramatic pause, the music then starts again with a mirror image of the material we had just heard, albeit with new elements added. At this point we hear a more calm and
slow passage in C giving the sense of a rebirth. Perfectly timed, given the agitated music before. This develops into an incredible climax, giving the feeling of some kind of beutiful epiphany.
My words in describing this recording don't do it justice.
This recording will enlighten your life, whether you be a classical lover or not!

4 out of 5 stars HAUNTING.............2005-04-22

It's been said by Robert Fripp, Miles Davis and a Ekki Sven Tuur that it is the silence that Music frames that we must attune ourselves to, as it is therein that the ineffable speaks to us. In both "The Confession of Isobel Gowdie" and Symphony no 3, "Silence", Scottish Catholic composer James Macmillan presents those brackets in such a clear way that you'll find the Ineffable murmuring from the start and beckoning all through this music.
I find myself moved more by this approach to music than the polyphonous, and often ecstatic articulations of John Taverner, with his Byzantine avocation. Brought up Catholic, you tend to miss that mystery that the Latin hymns brought to liturgical events....
And that's not to suggest that this is Church music. On the contrary, it is almost anti-liturgical, especially the Confession, which is a requiem for a woman who was tortured to confess to all sorts of diabolical acts and then burned at the stake. OJ made a cleaner job of it. In any case, the power of this music rails against a mysogyny that has never quite ever gone away in the Catholic Church, and pehaps Scotland as well. Premiering between Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Beethoven's Fourth, it was greeted enthusiastically. Listen, you'll understand why.
Symphony No. 3 deserves to be regarded as among the truly great symphonies of our time, along with Rautavarra's No. 8, and Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No. 3. It shares that abandonement to the infinite that one must make if one's journey through life is to touch what is most deeply true and utterly incapable of being articulated. I found this piecs haunting me long after I put the disc away.

amazing, everyone I let listen to it can't believe this band isn't huge already. This band will be big soon.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing And Truly Deserving Metal Band!!!.......2007-04-08

I first heard about these guys through a friend who saw them open for Avenged Sevenfold and being a A7X fan, I decided to give them a try. Wow, am I glad I did. This CD may only have five songs on it, but they are incredible....and it's cheap too. If you are into bands like Lamb Of God, Avenged Sevenfold or Bleeding Through....You'll like these guys. It's hard to believe that such deeply talented artists such as this don't get the respect they deserve, when all these wannabe white rappers are everywhere in the spotlight. Spend the six bucks to get this disc, It's well worth it. The best songs are "Jealousy" and "No Angel".

IT WAS AWESOME LISTENING TO THEM AND I STILL DO U SHOULD BUY THIS ALBUM IF YOURE IN TO GOOD ROCK

5 out of 5 stars These guys rock!.......2006-06-28

I first saw this band when they opened for Avenged Sevenfold in early 2006. Ever since then I cannot get enough of thier music. Their EP is only five songs, but all of them are excellent tracks that can stand up to any other more "popular" metal/rock bands. I recently saw them again at Warped Tour in Tampa and they unveiled two new songs from their upcoming full length CD that is being produced by none other than Matt Shadows(lead singer of A7X). These guys have a ton of talent and I would highly recomend this CD to anyone and everyone. Also make sure to keep a lookout for the full length CD that is due to drop in October of '06.
