Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Metal Cares exudes a sound seemingly tormented by sleep-deprivation, pain, and-- most pressingly-- fear. Hysen's vocals are much more prominent in the mix than on Red Your Blues, allowing her every grief-stricken crack and murmur to resonate above the equally tortured instrument parts. The track list serves as a peek into Hysen's neuroticism with titles like "I Can't Fall Asleep", "Teeth and No Eyes", and "Sharks", named after one of Hysen's foremost phobias. Monotreme. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rock album in 10 years.......2003-05-15

I've seen Jucifer several times and they keep getting louder and better!!! This album is a good introduction, and most people who hear it really like it. Heavy grunge with a slight hip-hop touch. The last time I saw them Amber had 24 quad cabinets behind her just for her guitar! And Ed is one of the best and craziest drummers ever. I could not recommend them more highly!!!

5 out of 5 stars They rock.......2001-07-31

This is a really great album, if you like 'em heavy AND sweet. What a great combination! This CD really flows well from one song to another, and it grows on you the more you listen. Lots of production and creative stuff going on in all the channels. But yes, you must see them live...it is awesome to feel the power and see the spectacle.

Despite what the reviewer says a couple of reviews down below, the "acoustic song" is NOT a throw-away! Its one of my favorites on the whole CD. If you liked Black Sabbath back in high school, but you grew up (even though THEY didn't,) then this is the band for you. Totally cool look, feel and sound! Also, the lyrics are great, and I think, different.

Amber is stunning and something to worship, while Ed is a maniac. What a duo!

One of my favorite "rock" records of all time. Very cool video, too. Again...see em live! They ROCK!

5 out of 5 stars I've grown up seeing 'em live - the Only way to "hear" 'em!.......2000-06-23

This is not a "real" review - My view would be totally biased - They are one of my top 3 favorite bands of all time, since I've basically grown up listening to them... Seeing them Live at the 40 watt club in good ol Athens GA! If you want to hear something beautifully intense, listen to them... and though this album does not capture what is Jucifer, it's close enough - still better than 99.9% of the music out there today. I see one critic wannabe out there said it wasn't perfect... flawed... Whatever. It isn't perfect - But it's still wonderful - Maybe that's why I love it so... Maybe it would help if you all know that there are only 2 human beings making this wonderful noise. Ed: Best Drummer Ever in my book, and Amber: Guitars - Vocals, whose unique sound is unheard of... Well - I'll not write a book - If you want to hear Great, Pure, Raw (but not raw enough - SEE THIS BAND LIVE! ), Rock Music - "Juicy Death Pop" as the band describes themselves, buy this record today. In fact, even if this doesn't sound up your alley, Buy it anyway - You'll Like it! - Help Support the Athens Music Scene, and hear the best music in the world while doing so!

3 out of 5 stars interesting...maybe?.......2000-05-19

On the surface, a quite interesting and unique album. There's not another band I can think of that sounds like Jucifer, but in the end, is that saying very much? Low, fuzzy bass/drum grooves born of a cross between Black Sabbath and Public Enemy provide the background for the female vocalist, who drifts freely from whispers to screams, sometimes in rapid succesion. The downfalls? The lyrics are the usual indie-rock pigf**k atrocities, the drummer sometimes has serious difficulties keeping the tempo steady (which leads me to wonder why they kept the tracks), and a rather monochrome texture over the whole album makes it at times a tedious listen. In otherwords, Jucifer are only capable of doing one thing. It's not a bad thing, but you may not always be in the mood for it. By the way, the acoustic number on the album is a throwaway, and adds no variety. This is a curious, if essentially flawed record.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet songs to worship Satan by........2000-04-24

If there is a rock revolution in the next few years, Jucifer had BETTER be at the forefront. With perfect ease, Amber's vocals float from husky whispers to soaring riot-high; her guitars thrash and wail, pumping out massivly heavy riffs. Frantic drums back up snaky hooks, sometimes a bit of Portishead scratching (as in "A More Luminous Skin" which is unbelieveable).

"Calling All Cars on the Vegas Strip" is pure double-edged rock: part Babes In Toyland, part Black Sabbath, part early-Soundgarden, and part Breeders and Belly. Just incredible. This is easily the best record I have bought in a long, long time.

3 out of 5 stars Let there be death punk.......2004-06-30

"Hot Cars & Spent Contraceptives" is brutal. There is no other word for it, its the aural equivilent of being smacked in the head with a piece of 2 by 4. That said its not terrible experience, it just leaves you feeling a little dazed afterwards. Now not a warning but I'll just mention that this sounds very little like later Turbonegro, there is no Euroboy so no spectacular Euroboy solo dotting the land scape, the vocals aren't as clear, and there is a distinct lack of melodies.

The album opens with a girl talking about how much she likes having sex, it sounds like she's describing a bad porno, and it now (because of the bonus tracks) closes in a similar way, a 24 minute cop rape scence. The music its self suits the death punk (the album comes with a sicker calling it the birth of death punk) than later albums, its got a doomy metal feel of Venom or even a much faster Metalica, but with hardcore punk drumming. The vocals are pretty much inaudible and while it does suit the music sometimes it just seems to grate your nerves after a short time. The strong points of the album are its sludgy brutal guitars and its flow. The latter is surprising because the bonus tracks on the reissue are interspresed throughout not tacked on at the end, but its obviously done with some care because it flows really well.

The songs them are all pretty good, there are no spectacular ones but there is only one really bad one and thats " A Career In Indie Rock" and only because its all spoken word and goes on for way too long, though the concept is sort of funny i guess (link what goes on to the title). The best songs are "Armed And Fairly Well Equipped" (Bonus) , "Kiss The Knife", "Manimal" and "Zonked Out(On Hashish)".

Its somehow more heavy metal and punk than any of their later stuff but not as good. Fans of "Ass Cobra" might like it more than others but really it just doesn't have the tunes to compete even with "F*ck The World". However it rocks, rocks hard, this is music to smash things up to.
