Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Music in the 23'rd Century.......2006-12-15

I have no dobt that this album will be in the Enterprise computer listed under "Classical Music". Hearing Andreas today must be like it was back in
time when people first heard the works of Bach or Mozart when they were new. I discovered Andreas, of all places, on the radio before stations that once played jazz and new age succumbed to hip-hop drivel. I began my journey with Andreas with "Down to the Moon" in 1986 and then bought everything by him I could find, and continued through the "Live" album.

One track in particular stands out as one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard in my life, "Secret, the Candle, and Love". As for the rest of the album, it should be noted that on his harp, Andreas plays rhythm, bass, and lead, all at the same time!!! He incorporates
so many different styles and weaves them together flawlessly. His music can be Middle-Eastern, Oriental, European, Latin American, and jazz at the same time, and it works! His music is truly world class and nothing short of genius.

This is the kind of music one either "gets" or does not. So when you see the Amazon "professional" review of Andreas' later album "Book of Roses", and you read where the author dismisses Andreas as "Tubular Bells of the 90's", consider the old saying, "Pearls before swine."

5 out of 5 stars Dream stimulating music...........2006-02-19

This album came across my hands in 1987. I was only 14 years old. I was used to listening to rock/pop or classical. When I heard this album, "Down to the Moon" I was exposed to a whole new world. This album takes you to a place of imagination and peace. With soft subtle sounds of nature and even some semi-spaceage sounding music. What Andreas has done with his harp and other instruments in this album takes you to another realm of imagination. Very soothing, however it's almost as if all the songs are telling a story. A seamless story. You will not be disappointed with this CD. When you close your eyes turn this Cd on it will be sure to take you to a place that only your dreams can imagine.

I have since replaced my cassette and now have this Cd. I regularly listen to it. In 19 years I've never gotten tired of listening to it. This album will truly be a treasure in your ambient/new age music collection.

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Music and the Great War.......2007-05-14

This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.

5 out of 5 stars How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29

War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.

Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.

The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.

The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording!.......1999-03-13

(It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)

I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars Good music, bad title.......1999-02-11

Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.

Thomas Hampson is a persuasive advocate for these treasures from the Library of Congress' vast collections, so this CD's generous sampling leaves you wanting more. It covers the American songbook in all its variety, from traditional "folk" items like Shenandoah to Stephen Foster to the immigrants Erich Korngold and Kurt Weill to Leonard Bernstein and contemporary composers. Hampson adjusts his flexible, light baritone to fit each song. The voice is full and resonant on Danny Deever, simple and direct in 19th-century traditional songs and ballads, and nuanced in songs like Ned Rorem's "As Adam Early in the Morning," one of several on the disc with texts by Walt Whitman. A standout is the last song in this recital, one that leaves you with thoughts about music, history, and our nation's continuing issues, "Ethiopia Saluting the Colors," by Henry Burleigh. Most of the selections are performed with piano accompaniment, but several are with a small ensemble of traditional instruments. A word of caution: everything was recorded in the 1990s and presumably was available piecemeal on previous releases, although few are likely to have more than a handful of these 20 gems. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars It's lovely - But not newly recorded!.......2006-10-04

I don't think this recording deserves One Star ratings or that the artist deserves such crude bashing. And re: Hampson's eye-colour.... Uh, these aren't lenses? He has blue eyes. I met him many times and...indeed, they are dark blue.

Anyhow, this is what Hampson is focusing on right now, American song. While those aren't exactly my thing I have to say that he sings them beautifully. I wish he'd stick to that rather than heavy Verdi and Wagner which his voice isn't right for.

1 out of 5 stars Yet another compilation.......2006-06-13

I am a huge Tom fan. I go to his concerts and buy all of his CDs. I must say that I have been disappointed by this CD because it's entirely made of old recordings. There's a new photo on the cover, but that's all that is new here. So if you've bought your share of Tom CDs over the years, you want to check out the track info before you guy this one.

Now, Tom has been on tour and I STRONGLY recommend that you go see him next year when he comes through your city.

The other thing really annoying is that on the CD where you'd expect information about the music or the recording co., you instead get a large warning label from the FBI on pirating.

1 out of 5 stars how precious!.......2006-05-08

Thomas Hampson swoons and croons to monotonous effect throughout this tired collection; again displaying his ego and faux scholarship in ample measure. Oi-vay, what a disaster! And what is with the blue contact lenses in the Jacket phot? Hampson's eyes are brown. What an unbelievably vain Diva!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Duplication.......2006-01-17

I have not even heard the album, and I will not. Although I revere Mr. H. in just about everything he does, especially in song and Lieder, I am very disappointed that so many of these songs appear on other cds of which I already have about 19 of him. I think he and the producers should have chosen totally NEW material for this instead of drawing on his past achievements. I have no reservations about his performances, for I have seen him at the Met in opera and at Carnegie Hall in Mahler. I value them and all of his past cd productions.

3 out of 5 stars If you like this sorta thing.......2006-01-17

Here Mr. Hampson is in his element. Unlike his less than viable attempts at Opera, Mr. Hampson is a thorough and intelligent singer of songs. His affectations, so fully inappropriate in bigger operatic literature, work well with the intimate nature of these sweet and personal songs. If you are Hampson fan, this album will thrill you.

5 out of 5 stars Technical indie rock? You betch'er bottom...........2006-03-24

I wouldn't necessarily call FSF's debut album "emo", either in the classic emo sense (Rites of Spring, Sunny Day, etc.), not in the nu-emo sense (Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Thursday). Although it appeals to fans of the latter, this album was a forerunner of the nu-emo movement as a marketable force, so to count it amongst its droves would be disingenuous. If it was more noticed, it would redefined the entire genre. Maybe give it a decade. People will come around.

You hear hints of the fabulously melodic guitar work in some FSF members' former bands, Strongarm and Shai Hulud, two south Florida hardcore bands that were formidable in their own rights, advising the vegans and Christians to put a more acute sense of melody and incredibly profound lyrical introspection in the headstrong, brutal scene. It worked.

So now we have The Moon Is Down, their first and arguably best offering in their woefully truncated 4 release career. Kleisath's trickster drumming (untopped in indie rock) slithers sneakily around Dominguez's and Colbert's chordally-vague, tag team arpreggios, while Neptune's bass stabilizes the odd progessions. Carrabba's melodies are exceptional, but technically speaking his voice is mostly adequate, and in some spots shines through (see "Monechetti"). He does a better job with his pen, tackling the boy vs. girl dichotomy, the subject of 80% of the tracks, a little more seriously and with more depth than the band's generic progenies.

Not technical in the guitar virtuouso sense, but in the great songcrafter sense. Technical virtuousity should be a means to an end, but some musicians propound the converse of such as a means to feel artistically superior. The masses want something different, and we get it with TMID.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful, Sophisticated, and Transcendent Work of Beauty.......2006-01-29

Before Chris Carrabba transformed himself into Dashboard Confessional, he was pouring his heart out as part of the Pompano Beach quintet Further Seems Forever. In my opinion, this is perhaps one of the greatest modern day rock albums ever made. If you want to call it "Emo" or "Pop-Punk", it doesn't matter, this is an incredible debut album. There is an incredible raw energy and fusion that this band achieves on The Moon Is Down. For a full 38 and a half minutes, The Moon Is Down draws it's listeners in and bathes them in a dazzling spectrum of crisscrossing guitar work, pulsating rhythms, and Carrabba's hauntingly painful vocals. The musical arrangement throughout the album is brilliant, the catchy hooks and melodies of the songs "Snowbirds And Townies" and "Pictures Of Shorelines" speak for themselves. Carrabba has the unique ability as a singer to go from hushed whispers to high key screaming instantly. His songwriting is absolutely brilliant, if not ingenius. His themes concern themselves with relationships and the complexities that come with them. "I'm waiting to give you whatever the world may bring, I'll give you my life cause I don't own anything. It seemed like the bottle was all that I had, I'll give you my life, If you give me yours somehow." Anyone who has felt the pain that love can bring, can relate to his music. The verses and choruses work perfectly together with the music, and everyone plays off of each other to stunning effect. I love the way some of the songs slowly build to a creshendo, and then take flight-i.e. New Year's Project. There aren't really any slow songs on the album, some are just more "toned down" at the beginning. After the first couple listens, when the immediate shock and awe of the album begins to wear off, Carrabba's introspective and often profound ballads of romance gone wrong slowly begin to take on a majestic and universal appeal. His abilities as a singer are completely showcased on this album. He can hold a note for an extended length of time, during which he is often screaming his heart out. His ability to communicate emotion through his voice alone, could allow him to go completely acoustic and be almost just as effective, which is what he has essentially done. Some of the songs feel so pained and emotional, that they become transcendent and are spiritually uplifting in effect. I think that Carrabba had more chemistry with Further Seems Forever than he does with his current band Dashboard. Further Seems Forever was an incredibly talented band. His songwriting is more intelligent, and I think that it demands a certain technical life that it achieves here. The Moon Is Down is an album that doesn't hesistate or second guess itself, and that is why it is so powerful. His lyrics essentially embody themselves within the music and are brought to life. One of the best rock albums ever released. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars best.......2006-01-25

one of the best emo albums ever created. in my all time top five.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Carraba should never have left.......2005-09-28

The Moon Is Down by Further Seems Forever is still one of the most powerful albums recorded by any band in this decade. It is a landmark album from a band for whom it has taken a long time to finally recover from the exit of singer Chris Carraba, who would go on to form the far inferior Dashboard Confessional.

The way tempo, rhythm, and beat are all combined so seamlessly with fundamental mood is unlike anything else I've ever heard. You don't have to be banging your head relentlessly to know that you are truly moved by what you hear (although, of course, I don't mean anything against headbanging, either). It was this album that taught me that music does not have to follow the traditional verse/chorus song structure, and this experimentation is yet another thing on which the album thrives. Finally, the musicmanship is spectacular, especially that of Steve Kleisath, who keeps the percussion constantly unpredictable.

In a time when I was still in my early teen years and trying to find music that truly moved me, this album helped provide the standard and show me what I was truly missing in the world of independent music. To this day I can still play "The Moon Is Down," "Snowbirds and Townies," "New Year's Project," and "Just Until Sundown," and they will still feel the same as they did the first time I listened to them. I think 5-star ratings may be given away too generously by Amazon.com reviewers, but this is a 5-star album all the way because it helped change the way I listened to music.

5 out of 5 stars unstoppable.......2005-04-28

although a little underproduced and rough-cut compared to the other two FSF cds, you can still get so much of a sense of talent from these guys. it's a pity that chris carraba couldn't make another cd with them. while he isn't a very good singer technically, he makes up for it with his songwriting ability and his passion.

also for those who listen to dashboard stuff and like the lyrics, you'll probably like these even more. especially New Year's Project and The Bradley. killer lyrics.. very well delivered. musically there's a ton of crazy stuff that you'd only hear if you pay attention, like how in Montacetti has this crazy 6/8 groove, and how in the Bradley they switch meter from 5's to 6's. as seen in the other cd's, FSF's hooks and grooves are so ridiculously creative. you will enjoy this cd for both its poetry and its musicianship.

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars One last touch of Paris (but oversold by the critics).......2005-10-11

Ned Rorem is the last survivor, since the death of Virgil Thompson, of the long reach that Paris exerted over a generation of American expatriate composers, many of whom drifted overseas between the wars to study with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Rorem's songs sometimes have American folk roots, but mostly he writes chansons, and like their French counterparts, his are crystalline, spare, sophisticated, and precisely defined emotionally.

If he were more tlaneted he might have wirtten masterpieces, but mostly this sounds like Samuel Barber on skim milk. Rorem often sets minor, if not trivial poetry. His lyrical gift is modest. But there's no doubt that he has been neglected, largely because of his stubbornly tonal conservatism, and now that tonality is repsectable again, he is being accorded last-minute honors. I'm glad for him, and his best work, which consists of his multi-volume memoirs, has added much to American culture. But even when skillfully sung by an artist of the caliber of Susan Graham, a hour's worth of Rorem's tiny jewel-like chansons is about twice too much at one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful perforance of excellent songs.......2005-01-20

I'm a neophyte to Ned Rorem's work. To be honest I purchased this CD because I really enjoy listening to Susan Graham. Although I really love hearing Ms. Graham's opera performances, I find it refreshing to hear her singing something in English. I also appreciate how she's taken time to perform something other than opera. Susan Graham's performance of Ned Rorem's songs has me seeking out other performances of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rorem Songs!.......2004-05-18

Susan Graham has a remarkable mezzo voice and sings Rorem as though she really is a sounding board for the composer. Kudos to her and this CD comes highly recommended to newbies to Rorem songs and those many die-hard fans!

3 out of 5 stars Come To Pop, Baby!.......2004-03-12

Recently, I heard Susan Graham on Garrison Keillor's "Prarie Home Companion" show. Wow! I didn't know who she was, but she had so much humour, verve and style while singing some show tunes, and that incredible voice. I rushed to amazon but all the English language songs I could find seemed to be on this album of Ned Rorem music. Well, whatever the weight lieder songs carry for the Germans, it seems that art songs in English mean songs you can't snap your fingers to, can't slap out a beat to and would never, ever, sing with your friends. I know, I know, I'm a Philistine, but please, Ms. Graham, give us an album of American popular classics, show tunes and the like. When I listened to you on Mr. Keillor's show, if I had been a bell, I'd have been ringing too! You are simply great. Don't let the classical music fans have all the fun. Throw a little our way too. Pretty please.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy indeed - a gem.......2002-08-27

I cannot disagree with "A Music Fan"'s panning of this CD. Having first purchased the Hearing CD which he/she references, I reached the conclusion that Rorem's music was too knotty and "20th century" for repeated listenings and enjoyment. This CD with Susan Graham completely reversed my opinion. The songs are indeed chosen to be accessible, but they are much more than that. They are, simply stated, lovely. This is a disc I will play again and again, and has caused me to investigate many other Rorem CDs. I just came on line to buy it as a gift for a friend. Rorem deserves his due, and this disc gives it to him.

5 out of 5 stars A rich sound melded around twin, lead slide guitars.......2005-01-12

Delta Moon, an Atlanta-based outfit melded around twin, lead slide guitars, offers rock-tinged blues and roots music that never go over the top or scream "boogie" in your face. In that respect, this quintet is much more closely aligned with Peter Green's Splinter Group---though not as cold-sounding as that blues outfit---than with southern icons such as the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynrd.

Guitarists Tom Gray (former main man for the brains but not the bluegrass bass player of the same name) and Mark Johnson create a wonderful tone when they merge and neither seems to crowd the other. This musical symbiosis yields a rich sound that is both crisp and greasy at times but never sloppy. Bolster this element with Gina Leigh's right-on vocals, and punchy, charged up rhythm section, a sprinkling of bright piano, and Vassar Clement's cameo fiddle on Stone Cold Man, Delta Moon is a force to be reckoned with (or with which to be reckoned for those preposition purists out there).

This set contains a mixture of strongly original tracks and creative covers---including the memorable title track, which is an R.L. Burnside tune, and a great rendering of Nightclubbing by David Bowie and Iggy Pop. "Goin' Down South" may be one of the best unheralded, deserves-to-be-heard releases hiding out there.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Delta Moon (God bless them!).......2004-10-01

What a fantastic album! Delta Moon is, from my point of view, the more interesting modern blues band around. I've been lucky enough to watch them play live during their recent tour in UK, and they played beautifully! What a fantastic night it was! Their third album, which follows a previous studio recording and a live one, not only confirms their qualities, actually it should bring them the attention they deserve both from critics and the public. The combination of the two slide guitarists, Tom Gray and Mark Johnson, and the marvellous vocal performance of Gina Leigh, not forgetting the solid rhythm section provided by Scott Callison on drums and Jon Schwenke on bass, makes their music rise to a different level unachieved before. True blues deeply rooted in the tradition but modern at the same time with a touch of rock and pop, played with feeling, excellent skills and plenty of soul. If you love blues as I do, well my friends this is the right CD for you. For me the best 2004 issue so far! I like it so much that I'd like to rate it 7 stars!! (I've never rated a CD 7 star before, however this one is so good...that I cannot help it!). Pick it up and enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful, A must have for any Jazz/New age Collection!.......2005-07-17

WORTHY OF FIVE STARS, BUT MY FINGER SLIPPED! I first discovered this new age masterpiece as a senior in high school waaaayyyy back in 1988. And while I absolutely loved this cd, I somehow had forgotten it. Then while recently thumbing through my collection, I rediscovered it. And I found that it is just as moving now, as it was almost 20 years ago. I especially love "Steam Forest", it's almost VISUALLY moving. If you love Jazz and/or New Age, and you're looking for a different sound, you won't be disapointed with this choice. And while I also love his cd "White Winds", "Down to the Moon" will always bring back fond memories of my teenage friends, and the anticipation of entering a brave new world.

5 out of 5 stars "New Age" music for non-New Agers.......2004-10-22

People often assign specific songs or albums as the "soundtrack" to eras in their lives, and for me, this album provides the soundtrack for much of my college life. I don't remember how I stumbled onto it, because I wasn't much of a "New Age" music fan then and I'm certainly not now. But my roommate and I played "Down to the Moon" over and over again. And today, after having largely forgotten about it for many years, I've rediscovered it and put it in heavy rotation on my iPod.

That's because this album is filled with good, catchy music that should be at least palatable, if not downright attractive, even to people who don't like stereotypical "New Age" sounds. No whale calls or pretentious "space music" here. Just well-written and well-performed sounds. Some of it is even, dare I say, danceable.

I've listened to some of Vollenweider's later releases, and they're not bad either. But none of them have hooked me quite the way "Down to the Moon" did. This is a CD you can play over and over as pleasant background music, or really listen to closely to enjoy the artistry of composition and performance. Either way, it works great.

5 out of 5 stars Money well spent.......2004-06-04

Before New Age music became overrun with indian flutes and celtic cliche, it was receptive to the new and different. This CD is one of the true landmark works of that golden era. Performers as diverse as Acoustic Alchemy, Brian Eno and Enya can all be heard in this album, which predates all of them by many years. Not only that, A.V. was backed up by an excellent group of musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Best Instrumental Music of All Time.......2003-12-31

Oft-belittled as elevator music, so-called "New Age" music came into its own with the release of "Down to the Moon" by Andreas Vollenweider many years ago. Since hearing that CD, I have seen Andreas live on 3 occasions and have bought everything he's ever released. This music has a transcendant quality that is perfect for pure listening, background for studying and reading, romance, inspiration, ambience, and really therapy of a sort.
After 15+ years of being a fan , I still listen to his CD's constantly. I think Down to the Moon is the best, but that's subjective. Andreas's music is the best instrumental music of all time in my opinion.

Album Description

Seven Genesis' tracks arranged for piano by two Norwegian musicians, reminiscent of Stravinsky's work for two pianos. The cover artwork is by Paul Whitehead who did several early sleeves for Genesis albums. Camino. 2001.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to your Genesis and related artist catalog.......2007-03-26

Don't be afraid to jump on this one! Unlike previous "symphonic" releases, this album stands up on it's own, and is an outstanding CD. This collection is well played and wonderfully arranged. I've listened to it almost everyday since buying it three weeks ago. A fresh look at some well-worn classic Genesis material.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-02-24

If you ever wondered why you're so fond of Genesis' music, you only have to listen once to these exquisite arrangements by Yngve Guddal and Roger T. Matte of some of the band's classic tracks. Beautiful songs, outstanding performances. Highly recommended, along with Guddal's and Matte's second collection in this series, "Genesis For Two Grand Pianos, Volume Two." A must for Genesis fans or anyone who enjoys great piano music.

4 out of 5 stars A VERY good attempt at a Classical Transcription.......2006-02-23

I've been a long-time Genesis fan, and a classical music lover. The idea of having 2 pianos play these Genesis tunes is an attactive one, and these gentlemen have given it a nice shot. There are only 2 moderate complaints: The cd is a little short on time (they could have done another piece or two), and I wish they hadn't taken some of the rock rhythms so literally (on some of the melodies). To go this far in "classicalizing" Genesis, they could have taken these rock-stylized rhythms out--they sound borderline hokey. Fortunately, this doesn't happen too often. On the other hand, they did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of these compositions and covering the parts with four hands. Sometimes even the pianos seem to "rock".
Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Interpretations of Classic Genesis.......2006-02-17

It's hard to imagine how wonderful these albums are (this is the first of two volumes - the second is even better and hopefully there are more to come)

This is an album of piano duets of the music of the 70s progressive rock masters, Genesis. However, it is NOT a `tribute' album. 'Tribute' albums are often Velveeta-smothered cheeseballs, sometimes just plain old elevator music. Other times they're nothing more than limp attempts - with little or imagination - at marketing tools for aspiring prog bands.

But not the music of Guddal and Matte.

First, the music has all the passion of the original music, and then some. You can feel the love that Guddal and Matte have for the music of Genesis, and this passion is deeply infused into these recordings.

The concept of dual pianos is great, creating a synergy with different melody lines, and allowing for great flourishes and nuances. The whole is indeed greater than the sum of the parts.

Further, their arrangements truly reveal the brilliance and composing genius of Banks/Collins/Gabriel/Hackett/Rutherford. The uninitiated would swear they're listening to compositions by giants of classical music such as Gershwin or Debussy.

The song choices are not obvious, but rather interesting and daring. It's so wonderful to see underrated Genesis masterpieces like "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" and "Duke's Travels" receiving such superb renditions. "Down and Out" - another surprising choice - reveals the complexity and passion of this underrated composition.

Bravo to Mssrs. Guddal and Matte. Music lovers of all kinds are fortunate they've applied their considerable virtuosity to the great library of Genesis, and created wonderful, passionate, timeless interpretations of compositions that have stood the test of time.

Here's looking forward to Volume 3, and hopefully a series on the music of the other prog masters, Yes.

5 out of 5 stars Almost Better On Piano.......2005-02-06

The piano is one of the most beautiful instruments. It can be so dark and deep, and yet so beautiful and moving at the same time. Genesis is a fairly deep and dark band, but it's hard to imagine listening to nothing but the stripped down melodies of their songs played by two pianos.

This is a clever ploy, and for once, it actually turned out great. There are string tributes for bands, and orchestral tributes, and even guest musicians covering or playing songs with the bands, and more often then not, it turns out to be total crap. Not Genesis For Two Grand Pianos.

This is a beautiful CD. It's hard to sum up the beauty of the piano, but to give you an idea; the CD retains a very classical feel. At the same time, the modern sounds of Genesis are brought through, only with a classic piano feel. The end result is absolutely amazing.

Imagine listening to Stravinsky conducting Genesis on classical instruments. If you can comprehend that, then you can sort of imagine what this CD sounds like.

My personal favorites on this CD are Fountain Of Salmacis and One For The Vine. However, the whole CD is strong, and there is not a single bad track.

If you enjoy piano music, classical music, genesis, or a combination of the three, I highly recommend this CD. Even though there are only seven songs, each one is played so incredibly well and with a considerable level of texture.

Screw the string-tribute-quartet. Pianos are in, and they fit this genre so much better.
