Customer Reviews:
Ultimate music for every time of day and every mood.......2007-07-03
With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.
Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30
This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.
Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27
I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.
20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08
I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

I am not a music critic nor do I "know" much about music but if you love lovely violin music you will love this.
Great Recording.......2007-01-04
The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

poor recording.......2007-04-30
Besides the bacground hiss, I found I had to turn the volume up to max just to hear it. So when you play more than one CD the others will be normal volume but when Kreisler starts you hear nothing and have to turn the volume all the way up to have it at low normal levels. So I recommend passing on this one.
Travel to the Old Vienna.......2006-01-26
Sometimes the author isn`t the best performer of his own works. That`s not the case. I completely agree with the previous reviewer: yes, only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
While listening to this music you so wounderfully feel the spirit of the old Vienna, that most technically perfect record couldn`t compare with this impressions. Treat surface noise of the records made in 1912-1946 as the scent of that distant time (by the way, nearly the age gone) - and you would be completely satisfied, because the playing by Kreisler is so scincere and soulful. So if you like Kreisler - don`t think twice. This is CD for you.
Only Kreisler Can Play Kreisler *****.......2005-05-08
What can I say? Only Kreisler can play Kreisler. Get a discography of Fritz Kreisler and start hunting down everything you can find by this man. You can compare violinists; Heifetz has astounding technique, Milstein's always wonderful, Oistrakh is a favorite of many, Kogan can play anything, etc., etc., etc.. But Kreisler... is a unique personality of the violin. Yehudi Menuhin said of him in his autobiography, there are many great violinists with perhaps greater technique in this area or that; but "Kreisler mystifies me." Bruno Walter, the great conductor, said of Kreisler, "He did not play the violin; he BECAME the violin." and this is true. There is something special about Kreisler that transcends violin playing itself. Something heavenly is communicated by him with his instrument. Transfers from old disks are always of varying quality. Kreisler lived a long time ago and recording techniques were very primitive; but Kreisler even seems to rise above the pops and the clicks. Other artists are drowned out by them but Kreisler soars above them and makes one forget they are there. You're focused on the beauty and the background noise seems to disappear entirely. Other violinists have tried
to play Kreisler and perhaps get the notes right, most notably among them, Zino Francescatti (who plays Kreisler better than any other man except Kreisler), but only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
If you want to hear it best, put up with the background hiss. It's worth it. If you want a modern recording, see if you can find Francescatti's tribute album to Fritz Kreisler. it's OOP, but an LP in mint condition sometimes appears on an online auction service. Why the Francescatti album ever went OOP I do not know. He is the only modern violinist that ever really tapped into the soul of 'Fritz' when he plays Kreisler. If the disk is ever again released, snap it up before it goes OOP again. In the final analysis, modern violinists, at most, will give you a representative selection of only about 16 tracks and usually you get the worn chestnuts over and over again. Enough of Kreislers own recordings are still available that you can still get the whole gamut of his discography if you just look. Do so!
Perfection.......2004-03-08
No crap...really? OF COURSE THIS RECORDING IS A TRANSFER! YOU THINK THEY HAVE DIGITAL RECORDING TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN???? Man, that review from Delaware annoys me.
Go with the first review. This recording is a must. It is one of the great violin recordings. Even my old violin teacher advise me to play some of Kreisler stuff to improve techniques. Kreisler is a legend. Lesson and appreciate the beauties of the violin.
disappointing technical quality.......2000-08-29
I realize that this cd was a transfer, but I have other music that was transferred from old recordings, and they sound much better than this. The disappointing technical quality of the sound on this CD disturbs me. In fact, it sounds worse than the vinyl I already own. Very loud hissing, some popping. The music doesn't actually sound like it's been recorded in a tunnel, but the sound is not as full as I had hoped.
On the other hand, I bought this after comparing Kreisler's performance with Joshua Bell on the samples; and I find I always prefer Kreisler. With no disrespect to Mr. Bell, I find I prefer the composer performing his own music.

This collection of Rachmaninoff's solo piano performances relies on a mix of old and new technologies. Between 1919 and 1929, Rachmaninoff cut these 19 performances to piano rolls, which would then be played back through reproducing pianos capable of accurately re-creating the original performances through pneumatic devices that animated the rolls with living nuances and shades--a facet that differentiated the classier reproduction keyboards from the more common "player pianos." This set updates the technology with electronic devices--transparently, though expertly, replacing the pneumatics. Played back on a Bösendorfer Reproducing Piano, this collection sounds astounding, full of Rachmaninoff's lickety-quick motion and his punching intensity when striking the keys. There are 18 Rachmaninoff selections--some of them collaborations--and one gem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," taken to new places in this 1919 reading. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Rachmaninoff is in the house!.......2007-02-08
Superb sound quality! This is not a remastered recording made back in the '50's. This is actually Rachmaninoff performing via a special, pressure-sensitive type player piano. It truly sounds like he was recorded live with our current technology. The accompanying booklet explains everything very clearly.
Rachmaninoff was not only an exceptional composer, he was also an exceptional (if that is a strong enough term) performer. This CD allows you to experience his performing abilities as though you were sitting with him today. Great CD for every collection, even if you only casually listen to classical music on a rare occasion.
Rachmaninoff Rocks!
Wonderful!!!.......2006-07-15
No, I'm not a kid. But I am quite the Rachmaninoff ethusiast;I own all his recordings, both acoustic/electric and piano roll. Before buying these discs (i.e. the two volumes of A Window In Time), I read the reviews here, and was a bit reluctant in purchasing them after having read the negative ones. They claim that "there is no music" in these cds, that the "performances" are uncharacteristic of Mr. Rachmaninoff. But after comparing these performances with those recorded centuries ago, they do indeed seem to be accurate. Though they were digitally transferred, the authenticity is still there. I actually wonder if the naysayers only bash this collection because of the fact that these rolls were converted in such a way, and because of this formed a harsh bias. The alternative to these recordings on Decca are nice sounding though the tempi are a bit off, as proven by the recordings of the master himself playing. This is especially evident in the G minor Prelude; the Decca version is simply too slow and simply unlike Rachmaninoff. The version here, however, sounds very much like his playing. Despite my praises, there are two flaws I find in AWIT.The first is the use of a Boesendorfer that at times sounds awkward, like in the ending of Elegy; personally I would have loved for these to have been somehow transferred onto a Steinway, and Rachmaninoff would agree with me, as he performed exclusively on Steinways. The second flaw is that, yes, that little bit of sponteneity found in the acoustic/electric recordings is missing, but of course neither anyone nor anything can reproduce Rachmaninoff's pianism in a flawless but Rachmaninoff himself. I strongly reccommend both volumes of "A Window in Time". Try not to let the negative reviewers sway you, decide for yourself.
Where Does This Take us to?.......2005-10-13
Wonderful music most brilliantly played, with no coughings or whatever. Many of them are celebrated pieces too. But I won't for a moment suggest any serious piano music lover to really compare it with Rachmaninov's RCA recordings even if you have the heavy hissings of the latter on the other side of the balance. You will probaly more fun if you could just concentrate on what this technology could achieve.
The dead come alive.......2005-01-14
This is the best reconstruction of historic playing you'll ever hear, in part because while Rachmaninoff is playing it's as if he were installed on a big Boesendorfer in your living room. Finally we hear why in his time R. was if anything a bigger name as performer than as composer. Wonderful music, with rich recorded sound, and the always-exquisite sound of the Boesendorfer.
Truly Magnificent!.......2004-07-19
I just got this CD and with some trepidations sat back and listened intently from start to finish. WOW!! I was hoping that the negative reviews about mechanical and robotic playing would not be too accurate. Well those reviews were utterly absurd, these are MAGNIFICENT recordings! To paraphrase the liner notes, we can thank our lucky stars that we live in a time that technology can bring us this close to the great Rachmaninoff! From some of the reviews one could think this is some sort of computer generated music, robotic and lifeless. Nothing could be further from the truth. The humanity, soul and beauty of the playing leaps out at you. We owe Mr. Stahnke a debt of gratitude for this labor of love. This is art restoration of a high order, not technological interference. To fault this incredible "remastering" of the orginal rolls is like faulting the new digital transfers of old analog tape. It is not "interfering" with original recordings, it is restoration. Purist debates and Bose versus Stein arguments are meaningless when hearing Rachmaninoff play with this level of clarity and beauty of sound. Just like digital transfer of classic films or "cleaning" of masterpiece paintings, this is technology being used to increase our experience of the original intent, not to alter it. I have ordered the second one as well and will purchase every single issue of old piano roll masters that is restored like this. Don't hesitate, these are truly magnificent recordings that will not disappoint. Five stars without reservation!

ok for the money but didn't have his good stuff on it.
Ill informed much?.......2005-10-12
I wouldn't usually submit a review with the express purpose of criticising someone else's view, because quite frankly, we all are allowed to form our own views and opinions..
But I feel the need to defend this recording from the very merciless and insulting review submitted earlier regarding the 'amateur pianist' on this cd having just learnt the correct notes to press but unfortunately not in the correct time..
Anyone who knows anything about Rachmaninoff should already know this..Rachmaninoff was VERY well known for having a flaire for improvising in his own pieces, and being that he is the very own composer of these pieces he is very well justified in doing so.
Case in point..Melodie in E. Sure..the triplet rhythm seems to have been completely destroyed, by the standards set by the score anyway. But sit back and listen closely and you'll notice that while Rachmaninoff has transcended the score and is turning the piece into what it should be, a fantasie, a piece of impromptu nature that should be allowed to fly with one's fancy and one's imaginations. The Barcarolle and the Prelude? Same thing. This is no "amateur pianist" pounding away without rhythm. Or if indeed this is an amateur pianist than nobody on the face of earth with the exception of Liszt himself should be allowed to qualify themselves as a pianist.
If one would care, one can examine the Memorex recordings made by Rachmaninoff issued by Decca, where the sound quality is lovingly brought back to life. But one observes, that he plays the Fantasie pieces in the very same manner, in a totally care-free and improvisational nature.
Obviously these pieces meant a lot to Rachmaninoff himself as he took the effort to record them on memorex. And obviously this manner of interpreting them is something that flows within his very nature for him to have done this MORE than ONCE.
Do not buy this record if you're looking for a stoic reading of Rachmaninoff. IN fact, do not buy ANY record of rachmaninoff playing ANYTHING if you want a stoic reading of them. Buy this record for the very sole purpose that justifies such a purchase. Buy this to listen to Rachmaninoff, the master himself.
And I highly recommend the memorex record by Decca too, if these pieces (the fantasies) have grabbed your attention. They contain the same interpretation, but with the quality and dynamics lifted to, while not what rachmaninoff would have expected or wanted, certainly surpasses any insight we have to his playing.
Great playing - poor quality.......2003-10-14
When one becomes used to crystal clear recordings in which one can detect individual notes, this recording is something of a disappointment. True, it is (allegedly) the great one himself but the outside noises are a real distraction.
I would have loved to have heard the Rock in person (as my father did) and this is supposed to be the next best thing. The bravura, the awesome technique, the lush romanticism are all present or hinted at but sound transferrance techniques can go only so far.
Ripples of Greatness.......2001-09-25
Wouldn't you love to hear Bach play his Toccatta and Fugue in Dm? Well, we can't. But we can hear the late, great Sergey Rachmaninov struttin' his stuff, playing his famous Prelude in C#m, Op. 3 No. 2. Yeah, it's taken from an old tape, but it's clear enough to be amazing. I, for one, was a little suprised to hear dynamics in his interpretation that one doesn't often hear in the performance of that piece. An historic recording certainly worth having in your audio library.
Bad recording, but still a good buy.......2000-11-23
Some of us don't have money enough for the complete works of Rachmaninoff... Granted, if you've heard the other recordings of these songs, you'll be rather confused. But Rachmaninoff is Rachmaninoff. If you're a casual listener, buy this cd. If you've never heard Rachmaninoff before, buy this cd. It's hard to go wrong for 4 dollars. If you're broke, and need a Rach fix, this is the cd for you.

Kreisler and Ehnes -Ten stars for musical joy - and more .......2005-10-05
This recording may be my favorite musical recording discovery in the last ten years. The Analekta recording of Canadian virtuoso violinist, James Ehnes, playing 20 Fritz Kreisler compositions for violin and piano, is relatively expensive. But it's so good that I plan to send copies for Christmas to as many of my family members scattered through the U.S. and Europe as I can afford - whether they're classical buffs or not!
For those who don't know Fritz Kreisler (and they have a treat waiting) he was probably the most beloved classical performer (violin) in his time. He was a multitalented man whose warm humanity, and generous and open spirit made audiences take him to their hearts.
Kreisler's unique 60-year musical career only begins with performance. Born in 1875, Kreisler possessed a gift for infectious melody. By the 1920's his audience-pleasing compositions - especially encores - began to encounter avante-gardist prejudices on the part of the professional musical establishment. The establishment accepted musical traditions of the past in older compositions but not in new composition. So the resourceful Kreisler introduced a series of encore masterpieces as "rediscoveries of works by forgotten baroque and rococo composers, whose manuscripts he had been found in a French monastery". Thus came celebrated pieces like Praeludium and Allegro by "Gaetano Pugnani", and "Sicilenne and Rigaudon by "Francois Franceour". After NY Times music critic, Olin Downs, reported research showing that manuscripts of Kreisler's "oldies" didn't exist, Kreisler revealed his hoax in 1935. That brought out angry recriminations by Alfred Newman and other musicologists who had been taken in.
Kreisler's technique had a larger influence on the evolution of violin performance, but he will surely be remembered most for unaffectedly capturing - amidst a relentless 20th Century movement to bury melody, romanticism, tonality, and other traditions of music - feelings like the charm of Vienna (Caprice viennois), and the aches and joy of love (Liebesleid and Liebesfreud).
James Ehnes'many awards, recordings, and performances with leading conductors and orchestras throughout Asia, the U.S., and Europe, place him among leading concert violinists. It speaks to changed trends among younger musicians that Ehnes (born 1976), would devote this album exclusively to Kreisler's large and small masterpieces with obvious love and understanding. Ehnes shares with Kreisler an "effortless" style and warmth. Besides the music, the liner notes are informative and perceptive, and the recording excellent.
A note about ratings: I said "ten stars" in my title, because over the past years the tendency for domination of five-star ratings makes it harder to distinguish truly exceptional recordings. I assume that the predominance of high ratings came about in an understandable way - people are most likely energized to rate recordings they really like. However, the result is loss of breadth, which is unfortunate to my mind. If ratings ranged more widely they could better delineate strengths and weaknesses, as well as stylistic preference. A "three" rating might include a unique quality in an otherwise mediocre release.

Customer Reviews:
A Viola Master In His Prime.......2005-05-01
William Primrose (1904-1982) was arguably the greatest of all violists. These recordings demonstrate that his virtuosity went hand in hand with supreme musicianship. The major items here are the two Brahms Sonatas, originally written for clarinet but later arranged by the composer for viola and piano. #1 (recorded 1946) is with pianist William Kapell, while #2 (recorded 1937) is with Gerald Moore. The transfers here are superior to Pearl's (both sonatas) and RCA's Kapell Edition (#1 only). I prefer these bolder performances to Primrose's later accounts with Rudolf Firkusny (Angel).
In #1 the tragically short-lived Kapell is a superb partner in a reading that is more dynamic and dramatic than any other I've heard. The sound here is warm and full. Moore is a fine accompanist in #2, which suffers a bit from its older sound.
The Boccherini Sonata #6 (1939, with Joseph Kahn) is a lovely work, and it's performed with great sensitivity and noble tone. The four encore items (from wartime Armed forces radio broadcasts) are delightful: a dazzling Paganini Caprice, Kreisler's Policinelle, an arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile, and a gorgeously schmalzy rendition of Foster's "I dream of Jeannie with the light-brown hair."
I'm keeping this CD and weeding my other versions.
Highly recommended.
Heartrending.......2004-03-27
As a player and passionate fan of the viola, I can personally say that these are the most gorgeous pieces for solo viola I've heard. Wiliam Primrose is the king of the viola- his instrument sings like only a viola can on these recordings. If you love the rich, mellow sound of a viola, or are wondering what on earth a viola is, I highly recommend this recording. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

Even better in the Great Recordings of the Century remastered edition.......2007-05-26
Potential purchasers might note that these performances have been remastered and reissued in EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series, and that CD is also available now via Amazon sellers, in some cases from less than $9.00, new.
THE Violinist.......2006-02-24
There is no one like Kreisler-perfect intonation and just beautiful sound from that instrument are his, without being mawkish or sentimental in his playing.
I prefer other composers' music, but he is a master on anything. To hear what a violin should sound like, listen to Kreisler!
Fritz Kreisler, the King of Violinists.......2003-11-14
Fritz Kreisler was definitly one of the most recognized and best violin player of all times, after Jascha Heifetz. Besides being well known by his compositions, he was a violin virtuoso. His great sense of melodie, made him compose and make wonderful arrangments, with a great importance for the violin repertoire. The sound of his playing in unmistakable, and has a very particular way to play his musics, like for example, the beautiful Schön Rosmarin, where the first notes, make so easy to recognize the Kreisler's playing. I recommend this CD to every violinists and specially to those that want to hear a Master of the Violin playing. Just great !
Listen to the Master.......2000-08-01
Kreisler was the one of greatest of his generation of violinists. This collection highlights his own compositions and transcriptions, and is a wonderful example of his playing style--very polished, refined, with a touch of humor when needed. A great disc, and a worthy addition to your collection, especially if you like historic recordings.
Fritz Kreisler is great!.......1999-07-21
I heard Tamborine Chinois on the Prairie Home Companion in their Towns Under 2000 Talent contest and really liked it. My son then started learning some other Kreisler songs and so I thought it would be great to hear the Master play his own music and I wasn't disappointed. My only regret is that I didn't get to hear Leibesleid years ago otherwise I would have studied violin over string bass.

Mesmerising piece of music.......2003-03-13
A gem of an album from this low-key Irish band, the vocals are haunting, reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, and the ambience sublime. Highly recommended.
Timeless and timely........2002-07-31
I couldn't begin to tell you how grateful I am to have stumbled across 'Polichinelle' by the relatively unknown band The Prayer Boat - still, I'll try and put my gratitude into words.
I don't know too much about the bands origins but their peers must surely be as others have wisely pointed out, The Blue Nile.
The Blue Nile's lovelorn balladry has affected people that prize musical integrity, strength of songwriting and sheer sonic beauty above all else. The Prayer Boat use these special and increasingly rare qualities to draw you in and keep you coming back again and again. This is music that swells with passion and melody, it seems to have endless depth, and endless meaning - it is perfect in every sense. Yep, I've fallen hard for it.
Many of the songs showcase Emmit Tinley's wonderful voice as the musical focal-point, and rightly so, it has a beautiful confessional quality as if he were reading from his most personal life pages. On 'It Hurts To Lose You' Tinley croons like the last of the romantics, while 'Dead Flowers' positively bursts with melody. My favourite song though is the tense and thrilling 'Balance' which boasts some wonderful chord changes and Tinley communicating his feelings perfectly. I could go on like this through song after song, but I think when you encounter an album as special and flawless as Polichinelle it really needs to be heard to be appreciated, and believe me when I say - it will be appreciated no end.
Gorgeous.......2002-07-10
This is an absolutly beautiful album. If you can find their first cd, "Oceanic Feeling", buy it. You will not be dissapointed.
The Good and The Bad.......2002-02-23
The Good:
To say that I was pleasently surprized by this album would be a vast understatement. The Prayer Boat? Who are these guys? "Polichinelle" exemplifies what good music is all about. Lead singer Emmett Tinley has one of those spirit lifting voices that sounds like he's floating in space. "The Prayer Boat" is cut from the same mold as Radiohead, Travis, Turin Brakes, and Coldplay. This type of music seems to be growing at a very quick pace, but Polichinelle is more of a extention of this type of music rather then a follower. This album is dominated throughout by uplifting piano melodies mixed with light effective guitar sounds. The piano gives the music charecter and E. Tinley's voice gives the music validity. This is "Thinking Music" at its finest, "Polichinelle" will make you smile and will have you coming back for more.
The Bad:
No, this album is not perfect. Some of the songs are flat and lack a certain elemental identity. This isnt the type of album that is filled with catchy memorable choruses, yet its more of a total album experience. Dont get me wrong, its not monotonous or monotone, its just not flashy. Flashy is overated, but if thats what your looking for you may not enjoy this as much as me. But you may!
Emotional connection established.......2001-12-29
Prayer Boat has become almost a necessity..I can't stand a day without hearing at least one of their songs. Their lyrics, their arrangements: all things I've seemed to establish an emotional connection with ever since I discovered them. All the little elements of each songs, all the little additions, seem perfectly orchestrated and pleasing to the ear and mind. "It Hurts To Lose You" is definitely a classic, and all of the other songs are must-listens. To appreciate Prayer Boat even more, one must look beyond Polichinelle and at their other songs on other eps (i.e. great songs like 'Before I Go' and 'Something To Behold'). I have gotten quite a good number of friends into Prayer Boat, and I have one request for anyone that does get into them: SPREAD THE WORD OF PRAYER BOAT TO ALL LOVERS OF GOOD MUSIC.
