3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-26

There are really only two tunes on this album that are both hard to find a desirable, and I bought it for the rarer of the two- Jim Pepper's great "Witchi Tai To" from the long out-of-print album, "Pepper's Pow Wow."

Unfortunately I was terribly disappointed to discover that the version presented here is a very short 2 minute and 55 second version, without the introductory chant. Luckily the version of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" presented here was also one I wanted for my collection, but that's a lot to pay for one song.

As for the other sings on the disk- a few are winner, most are forgettable, and one- "Papa Joe's"- was incredibly annoying when I originally heard it on the radio, and time has not changed my opinion!

4 out of 5 stars The Search Is Over.......2007-01-10

This cd contains a lot of tracks that I had been searching for in second hand shops but was told I would never find them by the less than helpful sales staff. The songs were all on this one cd.

4 out of 5 stars Glad to find.......2006-11-10

For a month, XM radio counted down every charting song from the 40's to the present. Quite ambitious, and an incredible listen. I here this song I love, but didn't get the name. A week later I purchase this CD and "Witchi Tai To" is on the CD. Great luck for me. "My Boy Lollipop," "Black is Black," "Tobacco Road" - all great songs. Okay, Lollipop isn't a great song, but it's hilariously fun.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Records Production of Old R&R Tunes.......2006-02-01

This disc provided me with some long sought after tunes from my youth. Typically the disc contains songs I tolerated, a few I never heard of, However, the producers sought to include songs which mean something to many.

Only one title on the second volume of the three-volume Good Vibrations best-of series cracked the U.S. top 10, 1964's "When I Grow Up to Be a Man." (Five of the selections here made the U.K. charts--"Do It Again," "I Can Hear Music," "Break Away," "Darlin'," and "Cottonfields.") In contrast to its loaded-with-hits predecessor, Greatest Hits Volume 1: 20 Good Vibrations, Volume 2 serves up songs that stand as second-tier Beach Boys--but only in commercial terms. The likes of "In My Room," "Don't Worry, Baby," "Caroline, No," and "Heroes and Villains" stand well above Volume One's "409," "Little Deuce Coupe," and "Sloop John B" in their contribution to the group's incredible legacy. Those hungry for hits will want to stick with the earlier volume, but burgeoning Beach Boys boosters will find this 20-song set every bit the match--and arguably the subjugator--of its all-hits forerunner. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Feel as if It Can Be Summer All Year Long.......2007-04-02

This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. In My Room, Don't Worry, Baby, and Friends are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as it can be summer all year long. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection...But You Have To Buy The Other 2 Volumes!.......2004-05-19

As the album title indicates, this collection picks up where Volume 1 ends. Although some of the songs barely cracked the Top 40, I feel these songs are just as important and do more than just "supplement" Volume 1. Like Volume 1, these songs are short radio versions.

The liner notes are enjoyable along with the colorful pictures, song credits and chart positions. As stated in my title, you can't just buy this without getting the other two volumes. Plus, this three volume set may save you from buying their more expensive box set which contains over 100 songs. With this three volume, three CD set, you get 60 songs you will want. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...The Rest of the Capitol Hits (and Near Misses).......2004-03-14

In many ways the Beach Boys GREATEST HITS VOL. 2 (along with Vol. 1 and 3) is a better choice than the 2003 single disc SOUNDS OF SUMMER. You not only still get all of their Top 40 singles (which SOUNDS OF SUMMER can't claim), you get some key album tracks and singles that charted outside the Top 40. So Vol. 2 not only gives you the big hits like "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" (1964, #9) and "Heroes and Villains" (1967, #12), you get Beach Boy favorites like "Wendy" (1964, #44) and "Friends" (1968, #47), along with b-sides like "Please Let Me Wonder" and the U.K.-only single release of "Cottonfields" from 1970--where it was one of their biggest hits at #3!

Even at 20 tracks the album is still a bit skimpy (running time - 51:12), but it helps provide a solid overview of the Beach Boys first decade. Like Vol. 1, the 12-page foldout booklet is awkward, but the essay by Beach Boy author Brad Elliot offers some terrific insight, the photos are wonderful and the track-by-track studio info is informative. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Great Material Unknown To Much Fans.......2004-01-30

Volume 2 in the "Good Vibrations" series tends give a more intriguing look at The Beach Boys. There is little, if any, inklings of the classic surf numbers. This disc seems to focus more on Brian Wilson's studio wizardry and their unique harmonies.

The first 11 tracks are from when the band was still hot and tearing up the charts. Here is where you'll find the eloquent "In My Room", the gloomy but optimistic "The Warmth Of The Sun" (great Brian falsetto on this one), the "faster, faster" vocal riff on "Little Honda", and the heartshattering "Don't Worry Baby", to name a few. Other gems include the one "Pet Sounds" track, "Caroline, No", the heartwrenching "Please Let Me Wonder", and the upbeat grooves on "You're So Good To Me".

The rest of the disc is from when the band started to become passe. Here we get tracks that are relative unknowns, with the exception of the infamous "Heroes And Villains". There's there two top 20 hits from this period, the pretty "Darlin'" and the nostalgic "Do It Again". There's also the sweet "Friends", a rock reworking of the country standard "Bluebirds Over The Mountain", and Carl's heavenly high on "I Can Hear Music". Closing this album is "Breakaway", featuring ebullient harmonies, and another reworked country standard, a marvelous Al Jardine - produced "Cottonfields".

I heavily suggest you purchase this album. It not only is full of great music but exposes the casual listener to a whole new world of Beach Boys music that they never heard before.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Greatest Hits Volume One is Better.......2004-01-16

This is a must for the absolute, die-hard Beach Boys fan. However, on the other hand, if you are a more casual Beach Boys fan (nothing wrong with that either), skip this CD and get the Greatest Hits of the Beach Boys, Volume One.

The first greatest hits CD has their BEST songs, their all-time, absolute GREATEST HITS. This CD picks up where volume one leaves off and focuses on their lesser known, and less popular songs.

Some of the selections contained in this CD are "I Can Hear Music," "In My Room," "All Summer Long," and "You're So Good To Me."

These songs are a study of how the Beach Boys' material matured and evolved from car, girl, and surfing songs to more intricate songs. It was at this point in their history that Brian Wilson wanted to progress from their surfing and car material to other types of songs, but the other members of the band still wanted to play surfing and car songs.

This volume is an study in that evolution. It is certainly not a bad CD, but if you prefer the car and surfing material, stick with volume one.

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.

Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Allmans apples, Skynyrd oranges.......2007-06-07

This is Skynyrd at their peak, I will argue this was the best rock band on the planet at the moment this album was recorded.

I could partake in the Allman v. Skynyrd argument for eternity. I'm a Sourthern musician myself, and I think there's room for both bands and both albums (as well as many of their other works) in any collection.

I find it intriguing that the aforementioned Skynyrd ripper listed later Black Crowes and Widespread Panic albums as better than Skynyrd live; the "Allman wannabe" label is a much better fit for those latter-day jam bands. All the guitar players I've ever known (including Al Kooper, who I don't know but who I respect the hell out of, considering his pedigree) thought the Skynyrd axe men were very progressive for their day.

The Allman-Skynyrd comparison is apt only from 10,000 feet. Yes, they came from the same area, and many of the influences were similar. But Skynyrd followed the more modern English blues-rock paradigm (see: Cream, Free), and they were more of a pop-song-type band (in the gunslinging, Allmans tradition, of course).

I would even venture to say that Skynyrd followed in the Allmans' footsteps. Indeed, Brother Duane is up there with Hendrix, methinks, and I find the Allmans' work during his lifetime unimpeachable and some of the best modern music ever made.

It gets iffy for both bands after their key members passed. Skynyrd was poised to become even bigger and better with the addition of Steve Gaines -- listen to the guitar work on "Street Survivors." And Ronnie Van Zant knew what the hell he was doing. Meanwhile, everyone knows what happened to Greg and Co. after Duane's untimely death. (I think I sense a pattern here.)

I saw both bands in the space of a year in '75-'76 (including all 3 nights at Fox for Skynyrd), and there was no comparison at that point. Allman biographer Scott Freeman considers that '75 Allman tour to be the band's nadir, and the Skynyrd boys were going for the gold about 9 months later.

I don't think any other Southern band has come close since then. . .

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!.......2007-03-19

This is one of the best all-time live albums in rock history and it depicts Lynyrd Skynyrd at their peak. These songs never get old and are just as great if you are at a party or listening alone!

4 out of 5 stars Capturing the essence.......2007-03-08

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" captures the bands innovative sound live during the group's ascendancy. Their following during this time became more than a "cult" following and after having played on the road for years, their sound became tight and smooth. They could replicate the studio sound quite easily with some improvisation to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This CD!.......2007-02-02

Having seen Skynyrd blow the Who right off the stage in 1973 this album audibly shows what they could do. You can feel it. Southern Shmuthern! It's Rock and Roll at it's best. If you didn't know where they were from you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. People get hung up on this southern rock thing. BFD!! These guys worked to get where they got and are anything but mediocre. I've read the same thing about the Beatles.. that they were mediocre at best! Yeah right!!
This album throws you back in the seat from the moment you drop the needle in the groove. I've worn out vinyl copies, thrown many 8 track copies out the window of my car, more vinyl and cassette and have the original release of this on CD (that sucks) and now this. If you are going to buy only one Skynyrd album, make it this one. They never put on a bad show!! Not even the lineup that is playing today!! They can still smoke any band right off the stage!!

4 out of 5 stars One more from the road Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2006-11-06

Great live album. I bought this on vinyl many years ago and still enjoy it today. Most live recordings are not very clear and leave a lot to be desired. This is one of the exceptions. I would strongly recommend this to any Skynyrd fan.

1 out of 5 stars Not Mainstream Rockabilly.......2007-07-10

What's mainstream Rockabilly?
Carl perkins, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, some Wanda Jackson.
Mainstream is a purer more refined sound.
This is pretty rough.
I would advise everyone to listen to the sound bites first so your no suprised. I never have been able to listen with Windows media Player to this sound bites although I use it for other music.
To use Amazom sound you need the new Mozilla Foxfire and Real player.
Even then some cds don't have the sound bites available.
I love Rockabilly, I guess with more of a country flavor than rock.
When asked to tag this product some of the suggestions were 50s punk, 50s punk rock. I'd say that fits the cd more than Rockabilly does.

4 out of 5 stars They always say rockabilly was the punkrock of its day.......2006-11-02

And this proves it. For sheer power and angst, nothing beats the early rockabily stylings that were fusing jazz, country, and teen hormones at a furious rate. There is some delicious Carl Perkins on this one, and I think some Link Wray, and although there are better examples of the pacesetters of the day, this one is a nice perspective of the more obscure artists out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Rockabilly from the Columbia Vaults!.......2006-05-02

This CD is way better than the first! First you have the insane hillbilly Ronnie Self belting out "forget about the danger and think of the fun" in a screw you devil be damned sneer to 1950's conformity! Then you have the awesome ghostly echoing song by Carl Perkins "Where the Rio Flows"! Link Wray laying down strip tease raunch in "New Studio Blues"! What more could you want! Songs that are white trash, rebellion, lustful, and crazy. Hear the barb wire guitars assault your ears! Hear the violent slapping of the stand up bass! The pummeling drums! The Screaming insane vocals! Got to have it!

5 out of 5 stars Just what I hoped for and more.......2006-01-21

Bought this along with the "Whistle Bait" compilation -- it's fun and full of energy, and the sound quality is great. Plus, I'd like to buy a wall calendar from whoever designed the album cover. I had this CD on through my headphones at the gym this morning -- great workout music!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, from Start to Finish! .......2006-09-22

This CD is filled with great oldies tunes from start to finish. If you like oldies, BUY THIS CD!!! For those of you who would like more music from the motion picture, buy The Big Chill Deluxe Edition, which is a 2-disc set with 19 hits. Great music, I can't say enough about this CD.

1 out of 5 stars The Big Chill.......2003-04-01

If I can't buy the cd with ALL THE SONGS that were played in the movie then I won't buy it. I know one cd could cover the entire movie so why can't this be done? Does it concern copy rights and releases?

5 out of 5 stars A CD I Can Leave On.......2002-06-20

Now THAT's an ultimate complement. The CD's you can let play, and you don't have to flip to any particular song, because, guess what, they're ALL fantastic! In addition, the movie was fantastic, so I think remembering the movie kind of helps me along when I'm listening. However, seen the movie or not, this is a great soundtrack and it's fun to listen to, while you're cleaning, lying around, or even throwing a party. I highly recommend; enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Where are the other missing songs?.......2001-05-21

I have seen the movie and I know that there are more songs than even these. What happened to Gimme Some Lovin and You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones. Just to name a few songs that are missing. I wish it could have been a complete soundtrack it owuld have worth spending the money.

4 out of 5 stars Great 60's music!.......2000-05-28

I bought this many years ago when it came out. What's not to love about "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "What's Going On"? The rest are okay, too. This is a good compilation of 60's music, possibly better than the first Big Chill soundtrack.

1 out of 5 stars Buying it for nostalgic reasons, you may be disappointed.......2007-03-21

Don't get me wrong I love the Stones, but "More Hot Rocks, Big Hits & Fazed Cookies" shouldn't have been released in 2002. Why? Most of this material could have been bonus material on the appropriate albums, but I understand show biz greed. Also, fans may have fond memories of this album, such as my brother, who I bought this for. One big problem he had was the opening track, "Tell Me," which was longer than the LP version back in the 70's. I can't believe no reviewers have noticed this, and that was one of the key reasons he wanted this collection; and it's not there! I call that tampering with history wouldn't you? Another problem he had, was the bonus material [disc 2] screws up the running order he so fondly remembered.

If you're buying this for nostalgic reasons you may be disappointed. If you are new to this collection it might be just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling stones at their awesomest.......2005-12-20

i got this 2 Lp set used at a local record store, underground sounds and i listen to it all the time, this is some of the best rock and roll there is, a relic of a lost time, theres some rolling stone stuff that i dont like but this is awesome, at times beautifel music. i recommend this to everyone. :0)

3 out of 5 stars Worth the money?.......2005-10-22

Well that depends... if you want a "Best of" collection there are many better Rolling Stones CD's out there, if you want to find out what they were doing in their "early years" than their first two albums are definitely the place to start, and if you want the "B" sides to their early singles plus the tracks off their first UK EP's (several which are included here) then their "Singles 1963-1965" boxed set has them all.

So why bother with this very odd compilation? Well there's only one, ridiculously expensive reason - "I Can't Be Satisfied" - a magnificent cover of a Muddy Waters track that's up there with the very best of anything the Stones or anyone else has released and which, along with "Little Red Rooster", was pivotal in establishing their reputation as a "serious" blues band. Featuring some stunning slide guitar from Brian Jones, wonderfully understated backing from Keith Richards and some beautifully laid-back drumming from Charlie Watts, it's an absolutely unmissable cut that was, quite unbelievably, "lost" in the track-shifting between their first two UK & US albums... and, equally unbelievably, is, at present, only available here.

It's a huge amount to pay for one track but then maybe you can help justify the cost on the basis that several of the other tracks on this double CD, most of which are excellent, fill some glaring gaps in your Stones collection.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed and schizo bag.......2004-12-12

What a disorganized collection. At first you can follow the Stones' progression in time, then you get a dash of cold water in the form of mostly half-baked covers. I guess no two people will agree on their favorites here, but here goes my opinion anyway.

"Tell Me" ranks as rank: sloppy, unoriginal and close to unlistenable. "Not Fade Away" doesn't add anything to the Buddy Holly version. Suddenly, we get the Jagger-Richards original "The Last Time," which may have been the first song they wrote together (others claim that was "As Tears Go By"). This is remarkable as an early effort, and as a contrast to the first two songs here. The energy jumps upwards again in "It's All Over Now." How about that marathon solo? You can feel the band having a whale of a session.

Then we get two more sluggish, disposable tunes in "Good Times" and "I'm Free" before entering the red-hot zone of eight varied and beautiful tracks -- minus "We Love You," which is worth a couple novelty listens, but can't compare with its company here. Why was this the single, and "Dandelion" the flipside? "Dandelion" is one of my all-time favorite Stones tunes, just in terms of sound, and because it's fun to play on guitar. Of course it's not typical Stones, and they haven't produced anything like it since '67, but I think it's unjustly overlooked.

"Lady Jane," "Out of Time" and "What to Do" (stuck on Disc Two here, who knows why?) can all be found on the album "Aftermath," which is worth having on its own. I do appreciate "Sittin' on a Fence" here, saving the trouble of locating the pastiche "Flowers" album for a romping acoustic ballad. It's another blast to play yourself. "Have You Seen Your Mother" is as gloriously wasted as rock gets, though I wonder what Keith meant when he said the wrong mix was released. What are we missing?

The streak of greatness sputters a little with "Child of the Moon." Since it's hard to find elsewhere, maybe it would be best on a "Metamorphosis"-type collection of oddities. We get another couple of album tracks, then a descent into early, primitive blues stylings, which you either love, hate, or confront with indifference. "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" is a bonus track for the CD, and it's interminable. But then you get gems like "Bye Bye Johnny" and "I Can't Be Satisfied," so the feeling emerges again of total anarchy in quality. Sadly, the final track is a letdown: "Long Long While." If the Stones had always sounded this dreary, they'd never have made it out of seedy clubs.

As with Hot Rocks 1, I think the music would have fit onto one CD alone -- maybe by eliminating the more regrettable tracks here. Because of the sheer brilliance of the best songs here, I think it's worth between 2 and 3 stars. Three, just because some listeners will find the rarer songs attractive.

4 out of 5 stars More Of A "Best - Off" Than A Greatest Hits Set.......2004-07-08

This sequel to "Hot Rocks" ranks as one of the better Stones hits compilations. However, while the first one contained big hits, this 2 - disc set contains many lesser heard songs. Of the 28 song here, only two made the top 10 ("The Last Time" and "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow" both peaked at number 9). But does that make this cd any less enjoyable? No. In fact, it actually makes it better since there are so many hardcore fans (such as myself) wanting a cd filled with rarities.

Disc 1 starts off around the same period as the first disc on the first volume of "Hot Rocks". Songs like "Tell Me", "Dandelion", "It's All Over Now" and "Lady Jane" rank among the best Stones recordings of all time, certainly as good as "Satisfaction" or "Brown Sugar". Others like "Good Times, Bad Times" and "Out Of Time" (the "Metamorphisis" version is better) are dated, but the Dylan - esque "Sittin' On A Fence" is one their bst studio efforts. On the downside, the remastering on "We Love You" is a bit muddy. Still, great cd.

Disc 2's first 5 songs continue where the disc 1 left off. "She's A Rainbow" is bright abd bouncy, and contains the rare intro taking place at a fish market. Then comes the eerie masterpiece "2000 Light Years From Home", one of Brian Jones' finest works. "Child Of The Moon" a great rocker and a rare b -side (it was used to back "Jumpin' Jack Flash"). "No Expectations" is another one of Brian Jones' finest momenst and significant for his use of the bottleneck guitar. After the jaunty title track from 1969's "Let It Bleed", we immediately go back in time to 1962. "What To Do" is a nice romp. It's nice to hear "Fortune Teller" without the live overdubs on "Got Live If You Want It", while "Posion Ivy" is a delightful cover of the Coasters hit. "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" is nice but othing to rave about. "Come On" a cover of a Chuck Berry song and their first single ever (released in Britain only) is one of the best songs in their catalogue. "Money", "Bye Bye Johnnie", the second version of "Poison Ivy" (much more harder than the first one) and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" (minus live overdubs) are great covers. Bringing thsi et to a close is a marvelou cover of Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied" (complete with excellent slide guitar, courttesy of Brian Jones), and "Long Long While", a great soul ballad in vein of Otis Redding.

This is a great cd for hardcore fans. New fans should wait awhile until they're more accquaintd to the Stones' material, but definitely should get it. Five stars across the board.

The harmonica's not exactly an imposing instrument; who would guess that a pocket- sized hunk of metal could be capable of so much expression? Volume 16 of Rhino's Blues Masters series shows just how much; the harp can trade leads with the vocals (Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet, "Cotton Crop Blues," Junior Wells Chicago Blues Band, "Help Me"), lay down a raw edge (Papa Lightfoot, "Jump the Boogie"), or play smooth as you please (William Clarke, "Pawnshop Bound"). As even a cursory examination of the above performers will indicate, the harmonica is well represented in all styles of blues; Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson, J. Geils, and Howlin' Wolf appear here as well. As capable as a horn or guitar of carrying the lead, and infinitely more portable, the harmonica may well be one of the most expressive and versatile instruments out there, and More Harmonica Classics offers several excellent examples. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Another fine sampler.......2004-08-05

You've heard that saying about a hundred monkeys clattering away at a hundred typewiters for a hundred years...I don't know excactly how it goes in English. Anyway, it seems that an ape called Jo Jo ended up writing a review rather than the collected works of William Shakespeare.
I mean, honestly...what do you think an album titled "Blues Masters vol. 16 - More Harmonica Classics" is?!

Well, never mind.
This is a very nice companion volume to Blues Masters vol. 4 ("Harmonica Classics"). Most longtime blues fans will own much or even all of this material already, of course, but beginners or "mid-level" blues fans should delight in the wealth of excellent material on this disc - aggressive up-tempo freight train harmonica and slow, smouldering fills and solos.

Most of the really big guns are here, like James Cotton, Slim Harpo, Little Walter Jacobs, Sonny Terry, Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, white boy Paul Butterfield, John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, and Aleck "Rice" Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II).
And most of the more obscure stuff is very interesting as well: William Clarke's "Pawnshop Bound", Lazy Lester's rendition of "I Hear You Knockin'", a great, swaggering "The Briar Patch" by Gary Primich, Papa George Lightfoot's thumping "Jump The Boogie", a raw early electric blues with a gritty sandpaper vocal, and Doctor Isiah Ross' tough, energetic "Come Back Baby".

This is far from everything you need to know about blues harmonica, of course, and a couple of tunes were chosen for the harp playing rather than their overall musical quality, I guess.
But there is a lot of quality stuff here, making "More Blues Harmonica" a really good buy for all but the most hardcore blues fans (they'll own 9/10 of this stuff already).

1 out of 5 stars thrash punk at its worst.......2004-02-07

I thought sublime was good, but this cd proved me wrong. Instead if hard core reggae rock, i was disapointed to hear stupid, painful, harmonicas. I mean it REALLY SUCKED. I mean by the time it was over, i had put at least 5 pairs of ear plugs on.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for hamonicists and harmonophiles.......2002-01-17

This power-packed CD is a must for both players and lovers of the harmonica, particularly of the blues-harp variety.

Most all of the tunes here are listenable, but some mighty powerful stuff abounds. On Howlin' Wolf's number, he sounds as if he's playing 2 harps at once. Junior Wells, in his rendition of Sonny Boy Williamson II's "Help Me," does a moving tribute to Sonny II both vocally and harmonically (as Sonny II died shortly before this was recorded). Sonny I is well represented here with "Shake Your Boogie" (although his harmonica is drowned out by the other instruments in parts of this song).

The king of Country blues harmonica, Sonny Terry, does an amazing turn with "Hootin' Blues Pt. 2" which defies written description. Wisely, Magic Dick Seltzer's classing "Whammer Jammer" is also included, as it sounds as if this tune may have been inspired by the above-mentioned Sonny Terry tune (listen and compare).

So for anyone who likes good harmonica music, listen and enjoy. For aspiring harmonicists, you may have think you've got it down pat, but listen to this to see how far you still need to go.

"You either love or you despise, there's just no room for compromise" spat Anglo-French bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel on "Burning Up Time." And by the time of No More Heroes--the Stranglers' second album--the battle lines were drawn between those (the press and the women's movement, mainly) who saw the future "men in black" as uncouth sexist pigs peddling aggressive punk Doors music and those for whom the Stranglers were a fantastically melodic, intelligent punk-rock combo, albeit one with a dangerously dry sense of humor and a swift-fingered, pipe-smoking keyboard player.

The former had plenty to complain about. Elderly aunts all across the land must have fainted the day an unwitting DJ played "I Feel Like a Wog" ("out on the dirty shitty jobs") on Britain's state-sponsored Radio One, so it's probably just as well they never got to hear the teacher-pupil relationship smut of "School Ma'm" or the infamously rude "Bring on the Nubiles," which was chanted like testosterone-charged Daleks and featured the word "f***" eight times. Musically, the Stranglers were on a roll--Dave Greenfield's use of Hammond organ and Moog synth coupled with Burnel's sonorous belch of a bass and Hugh Cornwell's not-bothered vocal made them instantly recognizable. And at least half of No More Heroes is every bit as good as Rattus Norvegicus (in fact, most of the album was recorded at the same time). It's also the only Stranglers album to spawn two Top 10 singles, namely the guttural call-to-arms of "Something Better Change" and the iconoclastic title track--a genuine rock classic. --Kevin Maidment

5 out of 5 stars Their only masterpiece.......2006-07-13

I disagree with the other reviewers here who regard this as less than the Stranglers' finest effort. I am not a rabid fan of the band but this one has always grabbed me from start to finish. I would recommend it to anyone looking to hear a punk band with classic rock roots more openly displayed, and the chops to back up that attitude.

The Stranglers' first album plods along, only really picking up halfway through - THIS one starts with a bang and does not let up until the last phased out weird noises at the end of "School Mam."

It's got a great survivor's tale of the suicide of a heroin addict friend ("Dagenham Dave"), drunken-sounding rave-ups ("Bitching", "Burning Up Time"), biting social commentary ("I Feel Like A Wog"), good old thuggish sexism ("Bring On The Nubiles") ... but the reason I keep listening to this album decades later is the hooks. I dare you to not start tapping your foot to "Something Better Change."

They sort of recreated this awesome vibe on their next one ("Black And White" is worth checking out) and then they started off in a musical direction that really hasn't interested me much. But "No More Heroes" remains for me a pinnacle of the English punk rock era.

The inclusion on this reissue of "Straighten Out" - their best non-lp track - and the great rocker "5 Minutes" just makes this package even better.

3 out of 5 stars Weird Zappa Like Stuff With Some Classics.......2006-07-08

I am not from England and I missed the Stranglers in my youth other than Hanging Around (which at the time I didn't know was a Stranglers tune). I got into the Stranglers through an Amazon suggestion (Amazon is freaking great), and got one of their many Greatest Hits cd's. Well I got into that so much I decided to get there whole catalog of original releases. I was expecting this whole cd to be along the lines of No More Heroes and Something Better Change (the ones that are on the greatest cd I got). Unfortunately the songs don't click nearly as well for me as those two did (which are awesome!). A lot of the songs remind me of Zappa (who I don't listen to but have heard), the songs just don't have as Dick Clark might say "The Beat". This is really going to make me look like a dumb-a but I always thought in the song No More Heroes that they are singing "whatever happened to... and Central Panzer" I'm thinking that's really freaking rockin singing about a WWII German Army Group that got annihilated in Russia, right after Leon Trotsky getting an ice pick! Well I looked at the liner notes and its not Central Panzer its Sancho Panza! Oh well he's cool too I guess, not as radical as a English Group singing about a Nazi Army Group but maybe that's what they meant really because it sounds a lot more like what I think it sounds like (they just didn't want to put that in the liner notes?)! This early Stranglers release reminds me of the stuff that bands like the Police and INXS put out and than later on they took on different sounds. In the case of The Police it was a mixed bag early on but there are of course some classics, INXS real early stuff was horrible, the Stranglers here to me are a mixed bag with some good and other stuff I will be passing by. I'm glad I got it but I doubt I'll listen to it often with the exception of my Central Panzer tune! 3/5 out of respect to all you Stranglers fans on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Punk Classic.......2006-02-25

One of the best Punk albums from 1977, a pure classic and as outrageous as any punk outing.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 1st, but nastier.......2004-05-14

So there's nothing that reaches the dark depths of "Ugly" on this CD. But a couple come pretty close. Fist there's the deliciously lewd "Bring On The Nubiles", the teacher-student relationship, "School Mam", and the extra track "5 minutes". While their is not a loser on the album for some reason it sounds rushed and incomplete. The band's in fine form here and Cornwall sounds angrier than on the fist but the songwriting just is not as good. More outrage than seediness. One things for sure The Stranglers realy try to offend you here and most times they do suceed. "I Feel Like a Wog" is excellent as is the next track "Bitching". While later releases still are pretty good, this is also their last really great one where they could even be considered a punk bank(or lumped into the same category). I would even consider them new wave and pre-industrial on a few tracks. All three extra tracks are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The Best NON BEST OF album by the Stranglers.......2003-12-27

This is without a shadow of a doubt the best early stranglers album. Hugh Cornwall is fantastic and JJ Burnel is ace and David Greenfield and Jet Black are cool too. This whole album is superb both dark and funny at times its one of their best early releases. My favorites tracks? you want one how bout all of them great stuff indeed.

One year before the tragic plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd main man Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, they added Gaines to the mix to revive the three-guitar sound that had worked so well for the group on tracks such as "Free Bird." In 1976 the band toured and released this double live album featuring such signature songs as "Gimme Three Steps, "Tuesday's Gone," "Saturday Night Special," "Sweet Home Alabama," and, of course, a blistering 11-and-a-half-minute version of "Free Bird." A cool cover of J.J. Cale's "Call Me the Breeze" adds a little variety. It's easy to see why this band dominated the rock charts in the '70s. --Lorry Fleming

Simply stated, if you do not own this, you are not a fan of good music. Yes the sound quality may not be on par with today's standards. However, this is a great, dare I say, historical document of one of the all time great lineups EVER!. The addition of guitarist Steve Gaines kicked these guys in the pants at a time when they needed it.

It's about time they get the the respect they deserve by being voted into the Rock and Roll HOF.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2001-07-21

This CD re-release (with extra tracks) was long overdue. I never get tired of listening to this! This was the real Lynyrd Skynyrd. The guitars are hot, vocals rough and wonderful, bass and drums tight. Although you can hear faint remnants of mistakes that were overdubbed on 2 songs (to fix live clams in solos), the music overall is second to none. This CD brings back alot of memories of growing up in the 70's.

5 out of 5 stars southern masterpiece.......2001-05-21

growing up in the 70's was perhaps the best time to grow up (except the '50's) for rock and roll. Especially the south, where bands like Skynyrd, was the king and the Allman's were the bible from which they studied. "One more from the road", sounds as good as the live cd's of today, and that album was cut when I was 13 years old,and now I am 38. Being from that area and era, one can't help but be proud and fall in love with its harmonies and instrumentals. Its only once in a lifetime that such artists come together and you are around to witness their greatness. May you live in our hearts forever......

3 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart's disco album?.......2006-07-07

A lot has been made of Rod Stewart's move to disco with "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" He was accused of being a sellout as soon as that hit began tearing up the charts. He didn't really deserve it, though - the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" was doing the same thing. What about David Bowie's "Golden Years?" Or ELO's "Sweet Talkin' Woman?" Roxy Music had a hit with "Love is the Drug." Kiss recorded "I Was Made for Lovin' You." The Rolling Stones reprised "Miss You" with "Emotional Rescue." Queen did "Another One Bites the Dust." So let's not get angry with the man just because he knew how to notch a hit.

Admittedly, Rod's contribution to the rock-disco crossover genre is one of the trashiest, sleaziest hits of 70's. It's also ridiculously infectious - especially that chorus - and Stewart was rewarded with a number one hit. It's no masterpiece, not even close, but it's guilty fun. Unfortunately, "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" ended Rod Stewart's hopes to remain a respectable singer - "Hot Legs" may have been sleazy, but it was all in good Stonesy fun. Here, he gave in to pulsating Eurodisco, and he's been paying the price ever since.

Of course, Blondes Have More Fun was a hit because of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" but it was a better album than could be expected. Not great, not good, but there were certainly a few more winners. "Ain't Love a Bitch" is a nice acoustic piece. There are a couple of throwbacks to raunchy rock 'n' roll, the best of which is the title track. None of them hit like his best work, and they don't come close to Faces classics like "Had Me a Real Good Time," but they're enjoyable nonetheless. There are also a couple of ballad-style pieces that are pretty good, if not as emotional as earlier classics. In fact, few songs really follow the mold of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" - "Standin' in the Shadows of Love" has another disco-fied beat, "Last Summer" features a slick rhythm - and so I feel that Blondes Have More Fun is quite underrated.

No, it isn't the place to start listening to Rod Stewart - try Every Picture Tells a Story - but it's a better album than it's reputation would indicate. If I could give it three and a half stars, I probably would.

3 out of 5 stars Consistently Ordinary.......2004-09-18

Some folks out there are enamored with this CD and the big disco smash Do Ya Think I'm Sexy. others may think old hot Rod expanded his style. To some degree Rod Stewart did do the later. However, Blondes Have More Fun is just an ordianry ten song set.

Don't get me wrong, these songs do not ofend me in any great way. They just do not thrill me. The prevous release, Foot Loose and Fancy Free consisted of edgy rock tunes and touching ballads. There are too many ho hum ballads with lifeless arrangements. The rockers are a little better but fall short of previous gems like Hot Legs and Born Loose. Dirty Weekend may have catchy guitars but the hooks and lyrics are somewhat forgettable. The title track is pretty catchy but does not break any ground in the creative department. Is That The Thanks I Get has a pretty catchy chorus and the cover of Standing In The Shadows Of Love is quite memorable. The disco hit Do Ya Think I'm Sexy has a few catchy moments but just does not stay to memorable over its five minute length. I could go on about the other five songs but the response would be the same: Some good moments but basically forgettable.

Therefore unless you are an established fan of Hot Rod, I would say that you could live without this recording.

4 out of 5 stars You know you loved it!.......2004-09-01

Never did any Rod Stewart album generate the kind of love/hate sentiment more than Blondes Have More Fun. Having already endured criticism, and cries of "sellout" for moving away from jolly old England, and settling in Los Angeles, and the subsequent cries of "sellout" for issuing the appropriately titled, "Atlantic Crossing", Rod dared to join the late 70's and horror of horrors, recorded a so-called disco tune. The truth is, most rock acts at the time were delving into the disco craze, trying to capitalize financially. The Stones (Miss You), Kiss (I Was Made For Loving You), Blondie (Heart of Glass), ELO (Entire Xanadu sountrack). So, criticism of Rod is very harsh, in my opinion. Especially when you consider that BHMF is a solid rock album on the whole.

I don't care what anyone says, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy is a great tune! And, unlike what most people thought, not autobiographical. As Rod does better than anyone else, he is telling a story. The lyrics start, "He sits alone, waiting for suggestions." After the mega hit, one kickass rocker, Dirty Weekend is next. In the style of the great Rod rockers, this one is basically a "head's down, meet you at the end in three minutes" tune. Rod displays his self-depricating sense of humour a lot on this album, as evidenced by 'Aint Love a Bitch. A cute little ditty that you'll be signing the rest of the day. Rod then slows things down a notch for a nice ballad, Best Days of My Life, before some more self-deprication on the rocking, Is That The Thanks I Get?

Side Two ( I Love vinyl) is more good stuff. With the highlights being the humourous (and again self-depricating) Attractive Female Wanted and Last Summer. You have to wonder if Rod was having trouble keeping girlfriends at the time he recorded this! Nice uptempo numbers such as the title track and a cover of Standing in the Shadows of Love fill out the cd, and we end with a song called Scarred and Scared. In my opinion this song is autobiographical, but I have no idea what the actual story is behind it.

The story here was that critics pretty much hated this album, but the fans ate it up. With the exception of Rod purists, who burned their copies of Every Picture Tells A Story in protest...

Overall this album is worthy of your music catalogue. Don't be afraid of disco folks. It's well dead...It's not coming back because you enjoy Do Ya Think I'm Sexy!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Worry About One Disco Song......the rest was the best!.......2003-03-29

I think the music portrayed the time perfectly, for the year it was released. Our music was changing quickly. He had to plug at least one disco tune. Turned out pretty good for him. Everyone I knew had that cassette tape. The remastered is even better. The memories are always better with Rod around! There isn't much that I don't like about Rod Stewart. Though it was in the disco era, he released this at the right time. A Classic to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than You Think.......2001-04-27

Blondes Have More Fun is the album that is easily the most critically reviled of all of Rod Stewart's albums and is a target of alot his fans. People call it Rod Stewart selling out to disco music and to a degree they're right. "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" is pure disco and in 1979 disco was king. The song was a number one hit and a platinum seller. The thing people overlook is that "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" is the only disco song on the album and while the rest of it isn't vintage Rod Stewart music, it's not bad. In fact there are some songs like "The Best Of My Life", "Ain't Love A Bitch" & "Scarred & Scared" that are high quality. Also, if you take "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" for what it is, it is a catchy piece of music. If you're looking for Every Picture Tells A Story, you won't find it here, but with Blondes Have More Fun, you get a solid, workman like effort.
