This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

    5 out of 5 stars Looking for something different?.......2001-10-10

    This album is as enjoyable as it is offbeat--from beginning to end. The songs mostly deal with the collision/collusion of a corn-ponish (is that a word?) country and western swing sensibility with a more refined cosmopolitan jazz band and pop music attitude. The results are incredibly clever, often hysterical, songs that read like vignettes of American culture clash. From the sepulchral western swing tones of Zeke Manners and His Swing Billies' "Mr. Ghost Goes To Town" (you gotta hear this!) to the wonderfully politically barely-correct more urbane Dorothy Shay (featured on 10 of the 25 tracks), there's a surprise at every turn here. Hell, even Arthur Godfrey and Dinah Shore deliver the goods. A wonderful album that's held together by an inventive spirit and a rather unique theme.

      I was first introduced to this delightful send up of the Nelson Eddy/Jeannette McDonald movies about 30 years ago at the Purdue University Summer theatre, I've been a fan ever since, and own both a CD and cassette. I hope someone decides to release it again soon! Eileen Brennan is wonderful as Mary and John McMartin as Cpl Billy Jester is a delight(Cap'n Andy all grown up...well sort of). Instead of Mounties, we have forest rangers and the "Ladies of Eastchester Finishing School are just too much! And of course there is the "older couple" who "Dream of Vienna". I would urge anyone who loves musical comedy at its most spoofy, to find a copy of this charming, witty, silly piece of Americana as soon as possible.... As Little Mary says, "Look for a sky of blue"!

        This is an old little recording that is supposed to be "various artists". I think it's more of "never-heard-of-him" artists.
        All songs here are the original London versions, which means (dum dum dum) JAZZY MUNGO AND RUMPEL! I think my "money" was well worth hearing this wonderful "Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer". It gives a completely different look to our favorite calicos, one that is a bit more sly and dangerous (and yes, they come complete with cockney accents). It has also become my favorite recording of the song.
        Another great thing about this cd is the fact that Simon Courthill (Munkustrap) sounds very much like Kermit the Frog. I get a kick out of listening to him, but that might not be
        a universal oppinion.
        Otherwise, this cd isn't that fantastic. For the most part, the cast sounds as if they've all just had a large does of Sleepy-Time Tea. Sue Foster as Grizabella speaks half of
        "Memory" and isn't much of a belter. I would, however, suggest getting this recording (provided you don't spend much more ... "money" just to hear the great "Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer" and Kermustrap or if you want to hear the orginal versions of the songs without shelling out cash for the OLC recording. For a better introduction to Cats, pick up the OBC or the OLC.
