Inaccurate track info?.......2006-03-09
Maybe I have a one and only, but track #11 is not Sweet Home Alabama. On my disc it is Lola by The Kinks.
"Supergroups" is a misnomer here.......2005-01-13
Best of the 1970's "Supergroups"? This is the best group of songs they could come up with? Music from bands like Boston, Kansas, Styx, ELO, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and BTO are great choices. But, who in their right frame of mind would consider Grand Funk, Rare Earth, Sugarloaf, or the Little River Band as "Supergroups"? Okay, the Little River Band had several hits, but they certainly weren't "Super". Some of these bands are so dang obscure that I could DARE most of America to name ONE other hit from half the bands on this disc, and I'd bet they'd pull a brain muscle and hemmorhage trying to do it. 14 total tracks. 7 songs are worthy classics, but the other 7 totally miss the boat. If I were producing a disc with these songs, I definitely would not have used the label "Supergroups". Perhaps a more apt title for this CD would be "Poor Man's Hit & Miss Tunes From The 70's". Sound production is less than crisp. Makes a nice drink coaster.
Good Stuff.......2003-01-07
Not a bad collection of 70's stuff, every song on this CD will be pleasing to the ear. Boston, Santana, ELO and others are represented as well as many other groups. If you are into the music of the 70's then this will fullfill all your expectations.
Great Collection!.......2002-05-19
If you're like me and don't own all of the original (albums!) tapes from these bands, then you'll love this CD. I often try to find classic rock compilations that have REALLY good songs on them, but most of the time I only like about 4 or 5 songs on any one collection. Not so with this CD! I snapped this one up because I totally enjoy every one of these songs. And several of these bands were one or two hit wonders, so why buy the band's whole tape in order to get one or two songs? Okay, so I'm not a die hard fan. Whether you have the original tapes or not, you'll like the variety and awesome guitar on this collection of classic 70's rock.

Released in 1992 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Dr. No, this two-disc set still stands as the ultimate Bond music collection. Disc one includes all of the hit songs from the Bond films, including Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger," Tom Jones's "Thunderball," Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live & Let Die" and Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only." Disc two includes Louis Armstrong's lovely "We Have All the Time in the World," as well as a nice collection of rarities (Anthony Newley's demo of "Goldfinger"), lesser-known orchestral cuts from Goldfinger and Thunderball, and radio ads for You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, and Live & Let Die. The perfect accompaniment for a martini built for two. Shaken not stirred, of course! --Dan Epstein

whether played by Sean CONNERY, Roger MOORE, George LAZENBY, Timothy DALTON, Pierce BROSNAN, Daniel CRAIG, or even by David NIVEN in the sixsties comedy 007 CASINO' ROYALE (1967), James BOND is the greatest spy ever!!! So it's his music!!!!
The Best of James Bond 30th Anniversary.......2007-02-11
Wonderful music, an enjoyment for any James Bond fan.
Good effort..........2007-02-09
The 1st cd is the most enjoyable (vocal track's)...the 2nd start's out listenable and then seem's to bog down with very repetative formula's.
A CD No James Bond Fan Should Be Without........2007-01-13
As someone who has been a huge James Bond since before he could walk, you can bet I love every aspect of the films, including the music. Many of the theme songs to the films are classics, while the ones that have slipped under the radar remain awesome underrated numbers.
In 1992, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of 1962's "Dr. No", the 2 cd "The Best Of James Bond" was released. Itr included all the theme songs for the movies from 1962's "Dr. No" up to 1989's "License To Kill", as well as a second disc of rarities.
This is an excellent compilation that all 007 fans must have in their collection. You get all the classic Bond themes, such as Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger", Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live And Let Die", Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better", Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only", and Duran Duran'a "A View To A Kill", as well as some lesser heard but equally great songs, such as Nancy Sinatra's luscious theme for "You Only Live Twice", Bassey's sexy rendering of "Diamonds Are Forever" and her mysterious, sweet "Moonraker", Lulu's thrilling "The Man With The Golden Gun", Rita Coolidge's glorious "All Time High", and a-ha's excellent "The Living Daylights". There are a few rough spots (Tom Jones' over the top "Thunderball" and Gladys Knight's awful "License To Kill"), but other than that, it's a nearly flawless compilation.
The second disc is a great treat for hardcore Bond fans. For starters, you get several radio spots for "You Only Live Twice", "Thunderball" and "Live And Let Die", some great instrumental scores, two different recordings of the scrapped "Thunderball" theme song "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (sung by Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey, respectively), Anthony Newley's boring but coll to have early demo of "Goldfinger", and best of all, Louis Armstrong's absolutely beautiful "We Have All The Time In The World", one of the loveliest songs in music.
It's true that there were Bond films made after 1992 (five to be exact). But as far as their theme songs go, only Tina Turner's theme for "Goldeneye" and Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" (from the recent "Casino Royale"), are worth having. My advice is to get this excellent two cd and download the 2 later numnbers. Then, you will truly have all the best of James Bond.
If you like the movies, you'll like the music.......2006-08-27
Bought this as a gift for my son who loves James Bond & has all the DVD's. He loved it.

Customer Reviews:
A few good tracks on this cd...two and a half stars out of 5.......2007-03-30
Hopefully this review will be mercifully short, unlike my usual windbaggery. Anyway, I made a belated decision to review this album after doing the same for Iron Maiden...this should round out my forays into metal.
Basically, I started listening to heavy metal after seeing a docu on Metallica and started buying some albums of theirs that were not too expensive. Since Black Sabbath are a 'name' act, I thought I'd take a punt by buying this compilation.
So, I pretty much REALLY like three songs on this album..."Iron man" [which is a great song, I think], "Paranoid", and the wonderfully trippy "Planet caravan". From the Dio period, I don't mind "Heaven and hell". Of these songs, "Iron man" has a great, Vikingy melody going for it, if you know what I mean. It has a great singalong feel to it, especially the intro "Is he alive or dead? Does he have any thoughts inside his head?" [or something like that]. "Planet caravan" is ethereal and dreamy. Love it, despite it not really being a rock song, let alone a metal song. "Paranoid" would be their best known song, I think.
The reason I don't give this album a higher rating than two and half stars is because it lacks catchy [to me] songs that complement the great songs. This is unlike the songs of Deep Purple [another putative father of Heavy Metal]-which is grounded, probably, in a different musical tradition to Black Sabbath...more bluesy, perhaps. Deep Purple's 3 cd best of compilation, especially the first two cds in that, have a really listenable quality to it...i.e. it might not be chock a block with great songs, but I don't mind listening to the cd from start to finish or could handle that. Even though I haven't reviewed that album here, I would give it around 4 stars out of 5.
Despite my lack of awe at Black Sabbath, I think I can hear their influence on Metallica. I haven't researched who influenced Metallica [they do mention Motorhead as an influence, I think] but to me Black Sabbath's influence can be heard in the tolling of bells in a Metallica song in their cd "Ride the lightning" or the trippy nature of "Orion" in their album Master Of Puppets. I'm guessing that they may have sampled the exact same bell sound that Black Sabbath did for their song which featured bells.
Lastly, for the unitiated, "Black Sabbath" seems to have Satanic connotations. To me at least, there is nothing dark about this band. They are HIGHLY MORAL, lyrically speaking. Especially in their song "War Pigs", which, if you are sceptic of President George W Bush's "war on terror", could be about him, or British P.M. Tony Blair [n.b. this song was released ages before the current 'war on terror' but, as they say, "the more things change..."].
I do have one accidental criticism of this compilation...I happened to listen to a mainstream classic/contemporary radio station here in Australia [Vega] where a listener requested a Sabbath song..."Changes" I think it was called. I didn't mind the song...it seemed 'real', if you know what I mean. It's not on this compilation, unfortunately. If I hadn't have listened to that request, I'd never have know about it!
P.S. I've also reviewed the following metal acts on this site:
Metallica [x4]
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
P.P.S. Here are some songs I consider to be classics of the metal genre:
Metallica: Fade to black
Megadeth: Prince of darkness
Iron Maiden: Run to the hills [though it doesn't have the quality of the other two in terms of me being willing to listen to it over and over and over again in a short period of time]
AC/DC: Hell's bells
Appears to be a good collection..........2007-03-17
However, most significantly, it's missing the song Solitude from Master of Reality. I just wanted to take this opporunity to dote on that underappreciated mood-piece, thanks.
not bad.......2006-08-19
Good, very extensive black sabbath compilation. The dio songs suck but 'zero the hero' with ian gillan singing is suprisingly cool. All the ozzy era songs are fantastic. 4 and a half stars!
Tops Rhino's two disc set, but..........2006-08-19
...it isn't perfect. Still, it's the best one if you're looking for a Black Sabbath overview, with it's great sound quality and two packed CD's (79+ minutes) you can't go wrong. This one tops the Rhino two disc set.
As for this collection, my only complaint would be a little less material from the 1975-1978 Ozzy period and more from the Dio and Gillan albums. Born Again (with Ian Gillan) for example, is one of the most underrated Sabbath albums and the only song they used wasn't even one of the better ones. I think "Disturbing the Priest" would have been a better choice to close out this collection, not to mention "Trashed" or "Born Again" would have been good if they had given more time for the other singers. Anyway, most people aren't buying this for the Gillan or Dio selections but rather Ozzy, even if it isn't good Ozzy, because the media tells them Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy.
Also not good, was the booklet's printing, which was rather small and hard to read. But maybe that was just my copy. If you are looking to have a good overview of Black Sabbath, save money and buy this collection over Rhino's two disc set. Oh, I'd love to see something like this for the classic Deep Purple lineup. After all, they are one of the big three: Purple/Zeppelin/Sabbath. Case closed!
first perfect collection I've ever seen.......2006-07-06
First of all, it's 32 songs!! You can't beat that for $19.99! And it comes with a nice little booklet. Not a big ol' box-set book but I still learned a ton I didn't know about them. And the cover is absolutely beautiful. Definitely my favorite Sabbath cover. Well, one of them anyway. It's my favorite right now. This all isn't saying much because I even like the hideous "Sabotage" cover.
Without boring you with song details (which would either make no sense because you're unfamiliar with them or bore you because you already know) I'll just say it is the first collection/greatest hits/box set I've ever seen that was perfect. It has the standards, the "essentials," the "hits," and several songs I didn't know. It only had one song I already owned... because ... fortunately... this is a time in my life when I don't own Paranoid or any songs from it.
Like a box set, it's got at least a couple songs from every Ozzy album - including just about everything (six of the eight songs) from Paranoid which, I suppose, you can't avoid. How do pick which songs from that album not to include? Personally, I would have picked a couple more from later albums and less from Paranoid but ... this is for everyone... not for Jay Sprout ... and ... everyone/mostpeople like Paranoid a lot.
You really get a feel for the Ozzy-era Sabbath sound by listening to it. You also get a real feel for the jazz roots a couple of the band members had and the musical skill they had but often goes overlooked (even by me up until today).
My only complaint is that it doesn't have "Changes" on it but if I really decide I need that song, I can always spend the 99 cents on iTunes. There are some songs by them that are really, really great I'd never heard and I heard songs that I love I hadn't heard in many, many years. This was exactly what I wanted.
It's all Ozzy except for two Dio songs and an Ian song. I personally think that a collection of this caliber shouldn't under-represent Dio like that but ... this was what I wanted ... mostly, if not all, Ozzy. And there's one Ian song. Now, I can say this because even Ian says he was a lousy choice to front them - if this is the best song off his album ... it's a crappy album. This is the first - and hopefully last - song I've heard off Born Again.
Born Again is where the collection stops collecting. There's no garbage from the albums that followed. Unfortunately, that means the one-album Dio reunion but ... if I want that... I'll go buy it along with the other two Dio albums... personally... though I love Dio... I am tempted to say maybe he's overrated. TEMPTED, I said... MAYBE I said...
All in all... if you're Sabbath-curious... this is the one to get. It's, like I said, a perfect collection and an absolute bargain. Not a bad song on it except for that last track. And the last track isn't excrutiatingly bad... it's good in the sense that ... you can say you've heard it ... and "Oh, that's what they sounded like with Gillan." If you can get a really cheap copy of Born Again, I'd even say you should buy it. But buy this first.

Customer Reviews:
Not much variety found here, but still a good compilation..........2002-03-24
It's unfair to criticise this compilation CD for it's lack of content because it's available at such a low-price. Still, only boasting *nine* tracks makes you wonder if Priority Records actually took this album seriously. It's wrong to label this a 'rock' collection too as there's a lot of different musical styles to be found on "The Best Of 70s Rock Chart Toppers". No-one could ever class 10CC, Bonnie Tyler, Gary Glitter and Foreigner as being the 'same'. Even so, this is a worthwhile purchase, and despite my minor criticisms, this CD comes recommended.
"Hot Blooded" by Foreigner is a good opener, but not one of my favourite tracks by that band. "The Things We Do For Love" by Britain's 10CC is more pop than rock - and the same can be said for E.L.O's, "Don't Bring Me Down". Both are great songs, but should you ever get the chance to hear any of their other songs, you'll agree both bands aren't exactly 'rock'. Robert Palmers, "Bad Case Of Lovin' You" - a track that is sometimes just called "Doctor Doctor" is a perfect example of what soft rock would transform into the following decade. "Rich Girl" by those perennial soft-rockers, Hall & Oates, and Toto's, "Hold The Line" are two other main-stays on 'easy listening' radio stations and should be familiar to you. Bonnie Tyler - the petite Welsh rocker with the powerful voice - contributes to this CD with her "It's A Heartache". This is one example of a singer who was better *later* in her career. "Radar Love", from the Dutch(?) band, Golden Earring, follows. This is nothing special, making it the weakest track on the CD. The album concludes with Gary Glitter's 70s classic, "Rock N Roll Part 2".
There's a few good tracks on here that makes this CD worthwhile, and the low-price makes it worth purchasing. So long as you don't expect anything *special*, "The Best 70s Rock Chart Toppers" will be a welcome addition to your CD collection.
Jon.

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
The Very Best of Janet Baker is simply the very best!.......2005-02-09
This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!
Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02
If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.
A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

Here's a bountiful blues buffet from deep in the heart of Texas, courtesy of the long-running Austin City Limits television series. Texas talents--including Lightnin' Hopkins, represented by a suitably idiosyncratic "Rock Me Baby"; the razor-sharp Albert Collins, ripping through "Travellin' South" in front of a horn-powered band; and W.C. Clark, the godfather of the Austin blues scene, who sparkles on a song by hometown hero Willie Nelson--make the most of their spotlight time. And, naturally, there's Stevie Ray Vaughan, who leads Double Trouble through a tight and tasty "Love Struck Baby." Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to his blues brother, "Six Strings Down," follows in an example of the collection's creative sequencing. In like manner Gatemouth Brown's "Born in Louisiana" leads into Dr. John's New Orleans version of "Since I Fell for You," and Clark's rendition of "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" segues into B.B. King's personalized cover of Nelson's classic "Night Life." The honorary Austinites, including a rambunctious Buddy Guy and a solo Rory Block, also make considerable contributions, the best probably being Taj Mahal bouncing through "Queen Bee" with Ben Harper on slide guitar, although Keb' Mo's straightahead "Tell Everybody I Know" isn't far behind. --Michael Point
Customer Reviews:
Should have been better.......2007-07-03
I get the feeling all of the artists record labels held back releasing any really good stuff. You get some tasty work here though. Worth adding to the collection.
Excellent cd...But there's not anyone hotter.......2006-01-12
Than Buddy Guy, doing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" This cd was a pleasant surprise, too bad Austin City Limits does not offer more of these blues tributes on cd and dvd..Would be sweet to hear the full hour performance of Buddy Guy and others listed on here. Buy it..You won't be disappointed, if you are, then you just don't get the blues.
A great compilation!.......2000-11-17
This is a great sampling of the blues. B.B. King does an excellent "Night Life", his guitar is fabulous! One of my favorites is W.C. Clark, who I had never heard before. "Queen Bee" is the best Taj Mahal I have heard. Miss Lavelle White, Stevie Ray, Lightnin' Sam, Collins....I could go on and on. The recording quality varies very little from track to track, which is expected from Austin City Limits, as they are one of the few TV program which delivers excellent sound. Don't pass this one up!

Vintage Guitar magazine review:.......1999-02-09
This greatest hits collection assembles fifteen performances from the famous television series "Austin City Limits." As a tribute to the televised music venue, it's a fine CD. And as a live blues disc it doesn't get much better than this. The recordings range from Lightnin' Sam Hopkins' "Rock Me Baby" from 1978 to Delbert McClinton's "Leap of Faith" from 1997. In between, are hot numbers from Albert Collins, Jimmie Vaughan, Keb' Mo', Gatemouth Brown, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Miss Lavelle White, the Neville brothers, Rory Block, and W.C. Clark. That's quite a lineup. Among the best tracks here, however, is Stevie Ray Vaughan's blistering performance of "Love Struck Baby" from 1983, when he was near the peak of his powers. B.B. King also turns in a fine "Night Life" from 1982 packed with his trademark vibrato and phrasing. Hot stuff.

Easy listening for love.......2006-11-10
This is another pretty good cd for romance. I have enjoyed listening to the mixture of music on it. It is a nice one to cuddle up with.
An Excellent CD.......2005-08-27
If you enjoy this type of music, this is an excellent CD. The sound recording is excellent. All of these cuts appear to be the originally released recordings except one glaring exception. The Righteous Brothers' tune, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is a 1991 remake and not the original. It is a mediocre substitute, at best. I really wonder why they did that!
Other than this shortcoming, this is a good choice if, again, you like this type of music.
Maybe even 5 stars.......2005-04-03
I have now retracted an earlier negative review. I have played it since and enjoyed it.
I was overly critical. I do play it and enjoy it.
(ONE AND ONLY LOVE ALBUM) REALLY DOES BLOW THIS ONE AWAY THOUGH AND I PLAY IT ALL THE TIME (100 STARS).

Aretha's Overlooked Quality Work.......2005-06-18
We all know "Respect" and "Chain of Fools" backward and forward (and rightfully so, they are amazing songs), but the poppier tunes on this album, "Daydreaming" and "Until You Come Back to Me," have never worn out their welcome or reaped their due praise. Back in the day, hipster kids didn't know what to make of this melodic swinging sound of Aretha's and vaguely suspected she had sold out. These songs sounded like nothing else and no one else on the radio. That originality keeps them fresh today. Even when Aretha was experimenting, trying to keep up the times, she still remained that core, unchangeable self -- maybe she was trying to be Diahnn Warwick but that unchanging quality of hers means Aretha is always the artist, never the pop star. Doesn't radio pop music sound now so impoverished compared to this?
The 70s were a confusing time and some of these songs demonstrate as much, but Aretha, you were and are the queen.
Great Lady Soul in the Seventies.......2003-12-30
This compilation includes Aretha's hits of the early to mid 1970s. The variety of styles within the soul genre is impressive, from the exotic Spanish Harlem (a 1971 top 3 hit) with its powerful vocals and impressive Spanish guitar through the minimalist Rock Steady to the beautiful balladry of Bridge Over Troubled Water, still the definitive soul treatment of Simon & Garfunkel's classic.
My other favourites include the emotional Don't Play That Song and the brooding You're All I Need To Get By, a huge hit in 1971. The CD also contains extra tracks, of which the best is Aretha's great version of Elton John and Bernie Taupin's Border Song.
Some fans might disagree, preferring her late 1960s gems, but I have always loved Aretha's early 70s output. Nothing beats the exuberance of a song like Spanish Harlem or the restrained intensity of her version of Bridge Over Troubled Water. This is prime soul from Lady Soul's most interesting career phase.
It Provides A Spirit In The Dark.......2003-09-14
There seems to be many greatest hits compilations out there for Aretha Franklin. This CD focuses on the seventies hits. There are many great songs-Spanish Harlem, Don't Play That Song, Oh Me Oh My, Until You Come Back To Me, and Border Song. Strong gospel influences exist in addition to the baladeering and soulful stylings.
If you want to collect Aretha Franklin songs from all eras, pick this one up for sure. Whereas Aretha has put out good songs throughout her career, I find her sixties tunes stand the tallest. There are a few ho hum numbers on this collection. Nonetheless, this is certainly a worthwhile smattering of tunes.
Even better than her 60's material!!.......2002-06-01
This is a great intro to Aretha's groundbreaking work in the 70's, which is not given as much press as her 60's masterpieces. On these recordings, she was backed up by the most soulful drummer ever, Bernard Purdie!! His grooves on these hits sound like a textbook of soul drumming. Just listen to his signature groove on "Rock Steady!" Bernard popularize that hi-hat hiss that is so common today. Additionally, his grooves on "Daydreaming," "Spanish Harlem" and "Brand New Me" groove like nothing else. It goes without saying that Aretha's singing and piano playing are exemplary, but with this particular band (which also included bassist extraordinaire Chuck Rainey), the results are in the stratosphere. Rhino does it once again. We should all write Rhino Records a letter and thank them for their existence, cuz they enrich our lives in many ways!!
Very Essential.......2000-09-18
