    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

2 out of 5 stars Early work is too derivative and unmemorable.......2001-11-28

Starting out as REO Speedealer (later dropping the prefix when threatened legally by obviously still-active '80s balladeers REO Speedwagon), this wily quartet from Dallas, Texas has weathered its share of rock misfortunes: their original label, Royalty Records (early home to Whorgasm and Dystopia One), went bankrupt; all of the band's gear was stolen while on tour; et al. A former affiliate of Rykodisc, Palm Pictures-which by all accounts is primarily a jazz/world music label-re-released Here Comes Death, the band's 1999 sophomore effort with new artwork. The music, however, remains firmly mired in the latter stages of the punked-out, grimy groove rock trend started by post-Sub Pop salad days outfits like Supersuckers and the Hellacopters and furthered by Zeke, Reverend Horton Heat, J.J. Paradise Players Club, Tee Pee Records, and all those lousy non-doom bands on the sadly defunct Man's Ruin label.

Almost all the cuts are one- to two-minute spurts of hammer-down muscle rock with little variation other than tempo. "CCCP (Cold War Blues)" and "Nobody's Hell Like Mine" sling a sludgy groove like Weedeater jamming with George Thorogood, while "Hate You Better" and the brief "You Lose, I Win" reanimate the punkabilly corpse of the long-dead Elvis Hitler. The instrumental "Sasparilla" sounds more like the Allman Brothers leanings of Halfway To Gone, and "Absinthe" smacks of a more boogie-styled Kiss. Excepting the Cavity/EHG swing of the seven-minute "California Tumbles Into The Sea," none of the songs is remarkable enough to warrant a second spin. But Speedealer are busy readying their new studio album, produced by former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted (ironically, Speedealer were signed by the same guy who signed Metallica to Elektra in 1984), so maybe their new music will mature into something more memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down, Speedealer rocks!.......2001-03-06

These guys are the best in the buisness. Nobody grabs you by your ears and kicks you in the face with a cowboy boot like speedealer. This album is one you put in and leave in from start to finish. You can't get any better at straight forward, hard hittin, no foolin around rock and roll than Speedealer. Do youself a favor.

    5 out of 5 stars Guitar Rock........2001-06-16

These guys pack more punch than any of the rival bands Fu Man Chu, Nashville Pussy, ZEKE and I like them better than Motorhead. They capture Pure Punk with a sort-of-like AC/DC-Soul in the guitar work and a Flamethrowing Master of a vocalist.

5 out of 5 stars A cool band without enough recognition.......2000-04-23

Speedealer is fast, heavy, and totally bad(..). These guys are one ofthe hardest working bands around. They play hundreds of shows a yearall over this great land. Their only problem is that they do not get enough respect. They are raw and intense and play with a lot of passion. I've been folling them for about four years and I gotta tell you, if you've never heard them or seen them live you've missing out on a hell of a show. They'll kick your (butt) back into a time when music meant something. If you like fast, loud music that's in your face then you have to check them out.

    5 out of 5 stars Redneck Heaven!.......1999-12-21

If you like the Seattle band Zeke, you will love REO Speedealer. See them live, and your ears will ring for a week. I can't take this album out of my CD player.

5 out of 5 stars This Thing Rips!.......1999-11-28

The disc I got lists the bands name as Speedealer, but there's no question as to the identity of the young rapscallions making their awful racket on this latest disc. More songs (18) than the last release on Royalty records, and the songs are, in my opinion, better. Without losing one bit of their edge, they have managed to add a bit more tuneage to some of the songs. Don't take this to mean that the sound is at all more polished or overproduced, just more of what you love from REO Speedealer- thick as hell chunky metal riffs with really cool breakdowns and screamed lyrics. 5 stars!

    4 out of 5 stars Hmmm..........2002-02-23

I wonder... what if Fu Manchu, instead of being a bunch of laid back So Cal stoner types, were rather a bunch of ampped-up tweaked-out aggro dudes from Texas?

This stuff really knocked me out at first... but wore thin pretty quickly. A few of these songs are just catchy as hell (Hit It and Run, I could listen to this one song all freaking day... sometimes I do) but a lot of the songs are just kinda 'there.' I also really like California Tumbles Into The Sea. It's up there with Sleep's best sludge. The second half of the title track rules as well... not too often you hear bass + wah-wah.

4 out of 5 stars I like it, don't know about other people..........2001-02-19

This Cd is great for people that are fans of punk, but it could still catch the attention of a boy-band loving kid turnng him into a hardcore skater (like me). All the songs are great, but the best ones are Screamer(Nothing to me) and Hit it and run's lyrics are extremly catchy. Greatly recommended for skateboarders and punk fans, not so great for people who like N'sync and backstreet boys, they don't mix!
