      1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2006-11-24

I don't even feel that I need to justify why this is so bad. It just is. Annoying, annoying music with crappily recorded vocals echoing over loud twangy guitar. This isn't innovative hipster-punk, that was Pixies. This is trash.

      5 out of 5 stars Get Hexed.......2005-09-14

Neil Hagerty has been writing bold and challenging rock and roll since joining Pussy Galore in the mid-80's. With Royal Trux he explored practically every genre imaginable while keeping the music and vibes feeling fresh. Now with his Howling Hex albums, he continues that tradition of mixing classic rock, blues, experimental, and unrelenting guitar riffs to form some of the best music you've never heard. In fact, his last three alums weren't even released on CD (vinyl only) which is a shame because they are as great as anything he's put out. Lucky for us, Hagerty is a very young man, and we have many more years of unique rock to look forward to from this amazing, prolific artist.

5 out of 5 stars Very good indeed.......2005-05-26

We're a Neil Hagerty-friendly house. Royal Trux and Neil's solo albums get played here often. What would it sound like if Keith Richards hooked up with a dynamite female singer, and they were backed by the original Thirteenth Floor Elevators? Something like Neil's latest band, The Howling Hex. I can't say quite why, but this album has an unassuming Gospel quality - maybe it's the cyclical riff-rhythms and the call-and-response vocals. At once tuneful, hypnotic and exalting. This album also makes me think of 60s psych bands like Fifty-Foot Hose and The United States of America. A very unique album to be sure, but also definitely rooted in pure rock music.

      5 out of 5 stars hagerty's found a sparkling new direction.......2005-02-26

I highly rec. this album for fans of neil michael hagerty, as well as anyone who's interested in a truly original interpretation of american music! although i've loved nmh's post-royal trux work, the howling hex represents a very new sound--he's merged himself into a new band (or maybe it's all him?) with incredible vocalizations with his female lead (mystery woman) and a tapestry of guitars that maintain consistant threads, instead of solos peaking in and out of the melody. this is an original sound that draws from the harry smith project and other uniquely american genres, yet maintains a distinct hagerty signature. get it now!!!

excellent! I have listened to this album so many times and still enjoy it...the only record my 3 year old likes besides early daniel johnston and the only record my 5 year old likes besides early os mutantes - me? I think its fine! will not dissapoint!

4 out of 5 stars Neil back to doing what he does best.......2006-06-09

This album is terrific. If you like Neil, and enjoyed All-Night Fox, you are sure to love this album. More approachable than its predecesor, this album really has a smoky, yet organized garage feel to it, turning your listening station into your favorite dive instantaneously. I really love this album. The only downside is its length. The album only lasts 30 minutes. Nonetheles, it is definitely Neil's best work since the first Howling Hex album. Don't be stupid. Buy this album.

          Album Description

Writing songs on the road and playing them, night after night, led them and us to this moment-defining statement: XI. A piece of every city can be heard on XI. In fact, spin XI on and you will find as well several states of mind and sound in the funky-swift, breviloquent songs. Think of The Minutemen playing Blue Oyster Cult's 'Godzilla' backwards (and underwater) to the post apocalyptic denizens of Hendrix's '1983' - but think fast because another song is coming and there's a riot going on. Guitar leads conversing with fat bass leads in front and behind you as saxophones wail before stripped down drums, the frenetic beating of the conga and other percussive instruments. This unnamable thing we know as rock is matched on XI with sharp-eyed lyricism and a multiplicity of vocal approaches.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars schizophrenic masterpiece.......2003-08-22

This album is really quite challenging and brilliant . It's not as messy as royal trux stuff. Yet, much more well rounded than some of his earlier solo stuff.

He's genius. This thing is so good. And i'm happy that neil's coming through so strong. It's long enough to be two albums. A little editing would have made this a classic in the way that bonnie prince billy's "i see a darkness" is a classic of 10 or 11 songs. Yet, it's all in there. And then some. Even some tortoise crossed with NMH. And also, i should mention, that neil now has a new hairdo. real tight.

5 out of 5 stars Hagerty does it again..........2003-06-02

This is Neil Hagerty's third solo album since the demise in 2000 of Royal Trux. Of course, being prolific has meant he has produced and played on a fistful of other records as well.

Howling Hex is Hagerty's best solo LP so far and equals anything he did while in Royal Trux. The gauntlet of styles this record incorporates is astonishing: acoustic, blues, Gram style country, live recordings. All this and more with that unmistakable Hagerty flow.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, this guy is the most underappreciated musician in contemporary rock 'n' roll and The Howling Hex sees him at the top of his game. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of 2003 (so far).......2003-05-28

Neil Hagerty may go down in history as being one of the greatest and most unappreciated rock musicians in history. His new album is so tight and soulful that it resinates in one's skull long after the record is over. From country to funk to good ole down and dirty trux style rawk'n'roll, Neil covers just about everything. The album as a whole is far better than anything that has come out thus far in 2003 (although the new Malkmus album is almost as good, almost). It blows away the "Elephant" by the White Stripes and virtually every other critically acclaimed album of 2003. Why? Because Neil is no kiddie. He's a vet and he's finally filled his solo potential.

5 out of 5 stars The return of Neil!.......2003-05-22

Neil Hagerty is back! This album marks a creative highpoint for one of the greatest indie rockers of all time. More stylistically diverse than most Royal Trux albums, this cd boasts everything from acoustic ballads to barrelhouse rockers to songs that successfully incorporate elements of free jazz. The album is worth the price of admission for the fluid, searing guitar work alone. Hagerty ranks among the greatest living guitar players (J Mascis, Paul Leary, Thurston Moore etc). Do yourself a favor, rediscover this amazing artist while he's working at the top of his game. Basically, if you have a soft spot for either Royal Trux, or Neil's solo stuff, you will find something to love on this album.
