Album Description
2007 digitally remastered reissue of the Post-Punk radicals influential 1979 debut album featuring one bonus track. The band's name is certainly ironic (they are the furthest thing from Pop), but there is something enchanting about their angry Post-Punk-Funk vibe. Their tribal-like rhythms and avant-garde approach to songwriting influenced a new generation of Post-Punk bands, an influence that can still be heard and felt nearly 30 years later. Vocalist Mark Stewart eventually joined Adrian Sherwood's On U Sound stable of artists while guitarist Gareth Sager went on to form Rip, Rig & Panic in the '80s and Head in the '90s. Bassist Simon Underwood helped form the funky instrumental outfit Pigbag. 11 tracks.

Hold the record like a gun........2007-04-13
"It was a very young attempt to mix up poetic, existensialist stuff with political yearnings. The idea of love as a revolutionary force-the way it kind of switches on a light, makes you hope for a better world" - Mark Stewart.
I remember back early in my teens about how older hipsters would tell us that the Sex Pistols record sparked it all for punk as we know it, so I sought out a copy post haste. I listened to it with interest, but somehow it wasn't that wild to me (had I been there at the start, I'm sure I'd eat my words). But once I got a copy of "Y", I was floored. I had found what would have been my "Never-mind The Bollocks...".
Should there be any chance you don't have an idea about the sound, it is a Frankensteins monster of stitched musical styles (free jazz, funk, dub, punk, etc.) which explode, boil and simmer all in one. It was rumored that John Cale was to produce their first effort, but that he dropped out and Dennis Bovell stepped in instead (who did an amazing job). Their contemporaries were The Glaxo Babies, This Heat, Slits, 23 Skidoo and Alternative TV's "Vibing Up A Senile Man". Imagine if Coleman's Prime Time ensemble made a punk record with a teenage Rimbaud on vocals, thats close as I could pin it. The message was political, all though it didn't speak it as much as you felt it. But no matter what you compare it to, nothing comes close to actually hearing it.
This edition is an improvement overall compared to the Japanese import. It features a bonus instrumental "3.38" (previously could only be found on the "Jazz Satellites" comp.) that was the flip for "She is Beyond..". Rhino's re-master is pretty good, giving the sound more punch, however it would have been crazy to hear album in a 5.1 Surround Sound mix (oh well). But the best of all is the mere fact that the record is available.
Given that I believe we will never witness a force this uniquely challenging in music, I cannot recommend this record enough. If you've looked this far into it, go further and experience something once in a lifetime.

only one complaint.......2007-05-06
undoubtedly this is a wonderful package. Finally the Prunes get some respect. My only problem with this set is this: we get single versions, adverts, but NO INCLUSION OF ONE OF THEIR BEST 45's---> no "Hey Mr. President"!
Electric Prunes-'Too Much To Dream:The Original Group Recordings,Reprise 1966-1967 (WEA).......2007-04-24
Two CD, 41 track compilation. Looks like the Prune's first two CD's on an import reissue. Appears to be their first two lps, both put out in 1967, 'I Had Too Much To Dream' and 'Underground'. Yet, this is something you don't see everyday. First, you get every tune off 'I Had Too...' THEN plenty of out-take recordings and mono versions, then after that, WEA tagged on the entire 'Underground' album. Great late '60's all American garage rock / psychedelic. Plenty of 'deep album cuts' here that only true Electric Prunes fans (like myself) will likely remember, such as the tripping "Sold To The Highest Bidder", "About A Quarter To Nine", "Luvin'", "Wind-Up Toys" among others. Highly recommended
For children of all ages: quintessential Prunes, necessary for both the completist and the casual listener.......2007-04-14
Like the first reviewer, I agree that this item--along with Live Stockholm '67--is the one to have, not only for the virtues of the complete package, but for the add-ons as well: the VOX wa-wa pedal ad, assorted (mono) singles, and bonus tracks. Apparently Warner / Reprise has something similar slated to follow for the succeeding two Axelrod productions in April '07, and even if those aren't the "true Prunes," I eagerly await their release as well. If you're going to do a reissue, this is how to do it. Now if only someone would put together a two-CD compliation of stuff that Dave Hassinger worked on, produced, or engineered (yeah, it's a pipe dream as competing label interests would prohibit it)--e.g., '65-'66 Stones, Prunes, Grateful Dead, and the list goes on~
It's About Time!.......2007-03-31
This UK import 2 CD set released on Rhino/Reprise is long overdue and my prunes have shriveled up waiting for years for the first 2 Electric Prunes albums as well as the 45rpm singles to be reissued on CD on Reprise (not the Collectors' Choice reissues). I must say the packaging/layout is nice, although I would have favored this edition housed in a jewel case or with disc trays instead of CD pockets, but this is an insignificant complaint as there are other positive Prune points to ponder. First, I'm going to critique the sonic characteristics. This was transferred from the original master tapes o'course, being it's a Rhino release and the sound quality is just superb. Very clear, crisp and powerful sound like you've never heard and does the original warm analog recordings more than justice with all around dynamic remastered sound that makes the Prunes more of a pleasure to listen to now as I don't have to "drop the needle" on my near mint original copies. There have been a few Electric Prunes CD's released the past years, but in my opinion this is the one to have along with the Live In Stockholm 67' CD (one of the best live recordings of the late 60's & is a shame Reprise never issued it). Their magnum opus "Underground" is one of my top 20 psych albums of all time as this showed the potential the Prunes really possessed & if only the original lineup were able to stick around a bit longer for a third album to expand on. Sadly, Hassinger lost interest in them & Axelrod takes over completely of the Prunes' musical direction hence forward. The 68' Mass In F Minor LP although, still gets some plays out of me from time to time, truely unique album, but I missed Jimmy Lowe. Too Much to Dream: The Original Group Recordings contains the two 67' full length albums plus the 45rpm non-lp sides & a few mono and alternate versions that are worth having as well. Refer to the song list for the additional tracks not on the original releases. The 45rpm single "You Never Had It Better" never sounded better and puts anything in the rock genre nowadays to shame. This song is utterly a Prunes masterpiece & was made to be played at HIGH volume! Play both CD's at high volume to celebrate this new release. Second, I dig the included booklet w/ Q&A and rare novelty shots & a couple of the group in their psych regalia. As an added treat, the CD's have the original Reprise tri-colored steamboat labels (yes, these things matter in a reissue). The Prunes have once again been fortified and by NO means have shriveled up like so much other things currently in this world. The second psychedelic revolution will not be televised! Are you prepared?
String of pearls.......2007-03-20
This release housed in a mini-lp-sleeve foldout is a delight in sound and packaging.Highly recommended indeed!

Innovative for its time but sort of annoying now.......2007-01-28
In his book "Rip it Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984" Simon Reynolds tells how the album's producer Dennis Bovell "grasped that the rhythm section held the whole band together." Bovell said: "The thing that was not together about the Pop Group was Gareth Sager's and John Waddington's guitars and Mark's singing, which would be drifting all across the frame." I agree completely.
I generally like bands of this style/era, and I tried very much to like the Pop Group, but I find that the theatrical, self-indulgent, whiney, screechy, spastic, bombastic, bellowing vocals detract from the music immensely. The singing sounds like a boy having a temper tantrum on a microphone to piss off his parents. The Birthday Party-era Nick Cave is pleasant in comparison. I actually like off-key, off-rhythm, amateur vocals very much, but this is something else completely. If screechy-howly vocals also bother you, skip this album.
An album totally unlike anything else........2006-10-31
This is an album that could easily be the soundtrack to an insane asylum. And that's a compliment. It's at turns dark, manic, creepy, funky, thought-provoking and even downright scary. But always fascinating.
It's also one of the single greatest alternative rock records I've ever heard.
It's an album so radical, it's impossible to describe exactly what it's like to listen to. The first cut, "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" is as close to accessible as this album gets. From there it takes a sharp left turn into the world of weird. Vocalist Mark Stewart groans, wails, grunts, and sputters with such manic conviction that you wonder if the man is playing with a full deck. In addition to the stunning musical inventiveness on display, the recording itself is a just as important piece of the final work of art. The effects are instruments unto themselves, frequently spinning the sound of the instruments into twisted, otherworldly sounds never heard on record. The musical elements draw from punk, reggae, jazz, disco, and ancient forms of music to form an album that's as unsettling and strange as it's cover art.
If you're a musical thrillseeker with an open mind and a taste for the esoteric... If the staples in your musical diet include The Minutemen, Pere Ubu, Gang Of Four, Nick Cave, and some avant-garde jazz, miss this one at your peril.
Very good!.......2006-08-16
The Pop Group have managed somehow to produce an album of post-puk experimental music that is quite listenable while at the same time very extreme and adventurous. Mark Stewart's singing was the same as it would be over the years, with him screaming and ranting. The paying is actually quite good if you consider music like this, and it is the use of many dub influences that sets this recording apart from much of their contemporaries. The members of TPG were actually able to some degree to convey a sense of musicianship rare in those days. This edition is very pricey though but I do not regret bying it at all.
Y can't there be more music like this made?.......2004-08-03
This IS punk rock. Daring, rule-shattering and damn catchy at times. You want yer punk rock, you get this. So punk that punks will hate it. Punkety punk punk.
WORDS DISOBEY ME.......2004-02-10
That line - the title of one of the songs on this album - perfectly describes my dilemma in attempting to write a review of this recording. I can think of few albums that have picked me up, shaken me, thrown me against the wall and opened my heart and mind as beautifully and powerfully as this one. I only wish that the other albums by this band were available on cd - especially their incredible FOR HOW MUCH LONGER DO WE TOLERATE MASS MURDER. Combining elements of rock, punk, funk, free jazz and downright mind-blowing experimentation in a way that can only be described as courageous, The Pop Group burst onto the UK music scene with this, their first release, in 1979 - and my mind, for one, hasn't been the same since.
The band was made up of some angry young men who - depending on your point of view - were stellar musicians who managed to put across their musical/social/political ideas in an incredibly effective manner, or were political/social idealists who managed to make their musical talents perform those ideas in a way to convey them so eloquently and emotionally to their listeners. It's actually a bit of both, with lots of other elements thrown into the mix.
It's hard to say that the band was `fronted' by Mark Stewart's inimitable vocals - but let's call it that for the sake of argument. He has a voice that is unique and unmistakable - once you hear him in any setting, you'll recognize him in another (and he has performed in other ensembles, both during The Pop Group's existence and afterwards). Stewart croons, shrieks, growls, coos and more - he THROWS his voice at the listener, and the listener better be ready to catch it. Utilizing mixing and performing techniques of dub artists along with his already-formidable vocal palette, Stewart creates an atmosphere of intensity, alternately powered and driven by anger, love, fear, dread, and a whole range of other equally powerful emotions.
Instrumentally, the band is as unique as Stewart is vocally. Gareth Sager performs on guitar, piano, and saxophone - his love of free jazz artists such as the great Roland Kirk is evident in his technique (as well as in the heart-wrenching abandon/control combination of his playing). Bruce Smith (drums) and Simon Underwood (bass) lay down one of the greatest foundations you're ever likely to hear anywhere. John Waddington's guitar completes the audio picture, sending cascades of slashing rhythms across the mix. The whole thing is really, really indescribable. The overall feel, believe it or not (for those who have never heard this band) is steamingly funky - but make no mistake about it, this is NOT mindless dance music. There are multiple, intense and VITAL messages to be found in the band's lyrics - they address political and social issues that concern them (and should concern us all) without flinching or pulling any punches.
This cd release contains the entire album as it was originally released, with the addition of `She is beyond good and evil', the band's first (I think) single. Take a chance, take a dive, and experience this - AND TURN IT UP!

Album Description
Dusty's disco album, digitally remastered, originally released on the Casablanca label in 1982. First time on CD!
Customer Reviews:
With a Touch of Dusty!.......2006-08-22
Dusty Springield OBE (1939-1999) knew how to sing a song better than any of us could. She had the ear and the vocal range to include country, pop, rock, and this new age style of music. It is hard to imagine that she has left us 7 years ago. She became an icon for lot of young people. This compact disc is for the 1980s sound which she also couquered as well as the 1960s and 1970s and even the 1990s. Dusty was a remarkable singer, vocalist, and truly gifted artist.
Hidden Treasure.......2006-05-25
This album was a huge departure for Dusty at the time of its release in 1982. After her initial pop success in the Sixties, Dusty's albums in the 70's varied greatly in content and quality, and she'd been destined to be relegated to the elevator-music bins. "White Heat" takes all of those expectations and eviscerates them. Only "Don't Call It Love" could really be considered middle-of-the-road here. This is an eclectic, loud album, where she attacks funky, soulful synth-pop ("Donnez Moi" and "I Don't Think We Could Ever Be Friends") and Pat Benetar-style rockers ("Blind Sheep" and "Sooner or Later") with equal abandon. The only misstep here was a cover of an Elvis Costello song, "Losing You" (a shame, since Springfield singing any number of other Costello songs would have been a music lover's dream).
The pinnacle of the album is "Soft Core", a song co-written by Canadian singer-songwriter Carole Pope of the band Rough Trade. Dusty sounds angry and sad, positively poking fun at her diva image and sounding almost Dietrich-esque in the process.
Sadly, this fell through the cracks when it was originally issued because of record company issues. It's worth a listen now; if you liked Tina Turner's "Private Dancer", or Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" albums, to name a few, I'd definitely recommend checking this out; those albums capture some of the same eclectic qualities.
A rousing delight!.......2006-01-28
If Dusty had done some of these songs intstead of the disco covers in her Albert hall concert,it would have been a vast improvement.
The sheer ferocity and emotional abandon on this lp transends a label, and Dusty takes a trip out on a limb to more than survive but...triumph!!! In the sexy Donnez Moi (Give It To Me), she earnestly pleads for lustful satisfaction.
I Don't Think We Could Ever Be Friends , is a rhythmic chant.
Blind Sheep resounds with a cynical dart, and is textured to perfection.
Don't Call It Love rings with pathos and resonates with emotion .
Time And Time Again, wistful and yearning, ,and is the most familliar Dusty ballad sound here.
The whole lp sounds modern even by current standards. The singing is just plain good!
I Am Curious sounds allot like Nona Hendrix fevered pitch in her gritty "Transformation" . Dusty once again blends earnest desire with a vengeance.
triumph!
There isn't one clunker, and this cd sounds the way dance music sounds when it becomes artful!
I rate this in my top 3 Dusty lps!
1. Dusty in Memphis
2.Dusty Definitly
3.White Heat
(in no real cemented order, all great!)
Experimental Dusty.......2004-01-28
This is a very different album for Dusty Springfield, but it shows her musical diversity. Each song has it's own style and Dusty brings her crystal clear voice to each of them. When you hear the first song "Donnez Moi (Give It To Me)", you know this is not your typical Dusty Springfield album! The album WHITE HEAT was originally released in 1982. She does a great job of Sting's "I Don't Think We Could Ever Be Friends", which is an album highlight. "Blind Sheep" is a very interesting heavy rock track. I believe this was an important album for Dusty. Not only did it foreshadow her work with the Pet Shop Boys (later in the 80s), but it was a very honest effort and talked frankly about sexuality. Other highlights include "Don't call it Love", "I Am Curious", "Sooner or Later", and "Losing You". This is definately her most experimental work, and just overall a great album.
DUSTY'S HOT ROCKING MASTERPIECE~WOW!!!.......2004-01-20
After Dusty's two diverse and wonderful albums from the late 70's, Dusty was ready to go into the studio in the early 80's and do a real masterwork that showed every angle of her incredible talent in a way never done before!! From the opening hot rhythm number "Donnez Moi", you know this is going to be something very different and unique from Dusty!! Forget the weird liner notes in this classic set as the writer clearly and sadly "didn't get it" what the great Dusty's magnificent talent is all about and it actually gave me nausea when I read this dreadful drivel and I will never go there again...to try and compare and discuss Madonna in Dusty liner notes is way off beam as Dusty possessed one of the greatest and most extraordinary singing voices ever...Sting's "I Don't Think We Could Ever Be Friends" is a real funk fest and Dusty's vocal is perfection and wildly soulful. All-time CLASSIC ROCK VOCAL is featured on the mind-boggling "Blind Sheep" as Dusty is totally on fire in this classic hot rocking masterful track that amazes one with it biting vocal greatness!! This is definitely at the top of the stack of all-time great female rock performances and should be given a posthumous Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance as it is really that great and get ready to use that repeat button over and over once you get into this awesome track!!! "Don't Call It Love" has a catchy rhythm and would have been a big hit if given single release as it has the sound of a radio friendly type of song. Next is "Time And Time Again" which is a glorious Dusty ballad that soars to magnificent heights and is one of her most beautiful vocal performances ever!!! Every song on this album is great and "Sooner Or Later" is totally infectious and another one of my favorites from a singer who was on a level all her own and could alway's be counted on to put out works so superb that each stands today as a timeless classic!!! Luckily Dusty appeared the year "White Heat" was released in concert at The Greek Theatre with Peter Allen and what a night that was!! Dusty looked great in heels and an electric blue pleated skirt and when she did the rock numbers in this set she was superb and had no peer!! Dusty also did her classics and the many standing ovations that we gave this legend were heartfelt and well deserved!! Dusty left us way to soon but left a treasure chest of great works for us to enjoy and "White Heat" is one of Dusty's finest to enjoy over and over...we miss you Dusty!
