Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Victim of Disco! Avoid This One..........2007-04-01

Elton John has often complained that this failed 1979 disco experiment was a commercial flop because it wasn't adequately promoted by his record label, but the truth is, it's just plain awful. Opening with a slowed-down, lackluster dancefloor cover of "Johnny B. Goode," it goes rapidly downhill from there. The other tracks, written by the album's producer, present the dico genre at its most pointless and mind-numbing. None of the qualities that made the great Elton albums of the early seventies so memorable are present here. I'm afraid this one is for completists only. For a sample of what Elton's music was like in his glory days, try instead Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

1 out of 5 stars Australia's Stayin' Alive!.......2007-02-23

What's with these 5 star reviews from Australia?? Guess Disco is still king over there. You GO, girl!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Downplay Victim of Love, it's full of good, straight up rock'n roll.......2007-01-06

Listen, I know that this album has been bashed, but I gotta say, I was quite pleased with it. Elton didn't write any of the songs (which may explain the negative feedback), but with songs like Victim of Love, Born Bad, Johnny B. Goode (a cover of Chuck Berry's tune), and Thunder in the Night, this album is pretty darn good. But since it isn't written by Elton, it isn't worthy of being considered one of his best work, since he has written so many timeless songs. But, in the song quality department (which is what I'm basing my review on), this album pretty good. No filler, every track is just good old uptempo rock 'n roll, and it has a lot of engergy. It's a CD worth picking up, if you like uptempo rock, and fun music.

2 out of 5 stars A qwicky, non-consequential album.......2005-05-16

I guess to totally slag Victim of Love would be to be slightly missing the point. Elton has mentioned in interviews that this was strictly a project, a one-off with Donna Summer producer Pete Balotte recorded around the same time as the 21 at 33 sessions. Having said that and knowing that was not meant as a serious, proper release, it still isn't very interesting.

The concept of Elton John making a disco album is both intriguing and cringe-inducing. It could have been so much better than this - but it seems slapped together hastily and contains the same metronome deadlocked pace from start to finish. The bubbling, fun bass interplay along with a couple of fierey guitar solos (a great one in "Born Bad") are about the most excitment to be had here. Otherwise, the quasi-new age keyboards and boring song strutures render this thing a bit too lame for the dance floor, even circa 1979.

In '80 Elton would return with a proper album 21 at 33, which contained smash "Little Jeanne" but wasn't much more inspired than this. It would take a couple more wilderness years before he would get back on track again, even then not up to the standard of Yellow Brick Road.

5 out of 5 stars Get Over It...Get Up and Dance!.......2005-03-11

No doubt about it, Elton John has released one masterpiece after another throughout his career, including the current "Peachtree Road." Give the guy a break. This was our beloved Reg just having fun...and great fun it is! From start to finish, "Victim of Love" keeps you dancing. What can be wrong with a genius taking a break and indulging in a project just for the fun of it! There's nothing serious here...just flat-out eurodisco ear candy. Get over it, baby...Take out that polyester three piece suit, those platform shoes, turn on "Victim of Love," bite your lip, get up and dance!

4 out of 5 stars Clapton's Love Letter Has Just Gotten Better!.......2007-05-26

This mini-lp replica sleeve version of the Clapton classic is a treat for fans; the mlps design is fairly well done and contains the lyrics in both English and Japanese. Ths sound quality is not that well remastered though which is a shame. This album is Clapton's love letter to George Harrison's wife to whom he was secretly in love with but what really makes it great is the guitar work on it done by both Clapton and Duane Allman. At the time the album was made, both men were the foremost exponents of blues guitar in the world. If anyone was better at it than Clapton, it had to be Duane Allman who tragically died soon after this album was made. Duane's slide guitar work is still amazing to behold today. Few people realise that it was Duane who played the lead on the famous track "Layla" with Eric playing rhythm guitar on the main riff.

Overall, this is essential listening for fans of blues guitar and especially for students of rock guitar.

    Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars clapton is in love.......2004-04-21

layla and other assorted love songs is pure and simple a truely great love album. Eric Clapton had fallen so head over heals for George Harrison's wife that he had to express his feelings and the only way he could was to write beautiful songs like he did on this album. The title track "Layla" stands out as probably Eric Clapton's best song ever. The guitar is claptonesque and the lyrics are so deep and desperate. I personally have never heard a song of this type where its so hard at the beggining then completely changes into a great piano ballad. I would probably say that Layla is the greatest rock ballad of all time, and really was the pioneer of all of the eighties love ballads to come. This album is simplistic and arranged so beautiful. Clapton really did not plan any of this out, it seems almost like it just came to him one day and these are songs that he wrote in minutes perhaps. this album really does kick ass, its so good, and i put it right up there with any dylan or beatles album because it has that classic feel to it that you can't go wrong with....clapton is god on guitar, just thought i would add that

5 out of 5 stars Derek & The Dominos' Layla.......2003-09-09

This album is the classic of all classics. There is not a song on it that I don't love! A one-of-a-kind recording that can never be repeated. It sure will bring you back to the good old days of your youth (If you're about 50 years old!). Eric Clapton at his finest. A must-have no matter what age you are. Buy it now!!! You cannot go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars love this love album.......2007-02-03

this is the best recording doris day ever made. usually, doris day came across as a prissy prude but this recording is a revelation. i don't know who was responsible for the the change but she is wonderful with these songs. she doesn't overstate the lyrics and yet her phrasing is inventive and natural. other people have commented on her natural singing style and i can't find a better word to describe her talent, natural and unaffected. what really sets this recording apart is the orchestration of the songs. no corny or dated settings of music but a relaxed and soothing backdrop for doris day's wonderfully warm and MATURE interpretation of the lyrics and sentiments. too bad she didn't make more recordings like these.

    5 out of 5 stars unbelieveably perfect!.......2005-12-16

I have never heard music portrayed so beautifully as Ms. Doris Day does on her last (and long-lost) album. My absolute favourite song on this wonderful collection is 'For All We Know.' It ...it is just so magical which makes you wonder how well it would have done if released in 1967. Please ...go out and buy this album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Lost Album..........2005-02-24

...After the death of Doris's husband, Marty Melcher and during such a busy time filming for her CBS TV sitcom "The Doris Day Show", a newly recorded album was lost and forgotten. That was until 1994, when Doris Day released and promoted "The Love Album". These are laid back, lushly orchestrated songs that make for ideal lounge music. Not my favourite of Day albums but worthy of a place in your DD collection!

    5 out of 5 stars This one's for Lovers!.......2000-10-25

A great album and wonderful music to set the mood for a romantic evening. Soft and senual, be sure to dim the lights and lite the candles. This one's for Lovers!

5 out of 5 stars soft and gentle.......2000-05-19

Soft, gentle, and soulful, the Love Album sets a mature, bittersweet mood and soothes you to love. This apparently last and long lost album of Doris Day is probably her best, with only a handful of others competeing, including her two lovingly done religious-inspirational disks and another, Doris Day and Andre Previn Duet, along with the Bossa Nova Latin album. There is also something bittersweet in the thought that Day, at this high point, stopped recording, leaving us saddened at the thought of how many wonders we never heard from this humble musical genius.

5 out of 5 stars This Mini CD is One of the Better Ones.......2003-10-02

This mini CD or CD single if you want to call it that, starts out with the Grammy version of Mr. D singing "Love Sick," the leading song on Mr. D's "Time Out of Mind," CD, then it smoothly segues into a live version of "Cold Iron's Bound," a song also found on "Time Out of Mind." But the real highlights of this four song live CD are "Cocaine Blues" which has never released anywhere before, and "Born in Time," which sounds so much better here then it did on Dylan's "Under the Red Sky" CD. I know these CD singles are short, and maybe seem too costly for what you get, but I couldn't resist it. I do believe that Sony should release all the live stuff from the various CD singles they've put out to promote "Time Out of Mind" as a live album, touting the "Never Ending Tour. Maybe they will, but until they do, you'll have to settle for what you can get, and this mini CD is one of the better ones.

5 out of 5 stars Celine has always shined!.......2000-10-09

I recently bought one of Celine Dion's earlier efforts, The French Love Album, and was completely blown away. Her already astounding voice sounds even more magnificent in her native language of French. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Super Version of Blind Willie McTell.......2003-10-02

This mini CD or CD single if you prefer starts out with the album version of Love Sick and that is truly a shame, because anybody who would even think about buying this CD single already owns "Love and Theft." You're only getting four songs here, so it seems a complete waste to have to pay for something you already have. That said, you do get three other tunes. A live version of "Can't Wait," which is very good, but the version on the album is better, of course, I think "Love and Theft" is maybe tied with "Blood on the Tracks" as being the best album Mr. D has ever done. "Roving Gambler" is nice. I remember when I was a little girl my dad used to play the Frankie Laine version all the time. Frankie just turned ninety and is still going strong. In fact I've got the "Frankie Lane live at New Orleans" CD which was recorded in 1999 when he was eighty-six and he was great. I just hope our friend Bobby is still recording when he's that age, cuz he just keeps getting better.

The crème de le crème of this CD is the super version of "Blind Willie McTell," that closes it. Sony really, really should make a live CD of the "Never Ending Tour." With song like this on it, it would be huge. Five stars for this one, just cuz of "Blind Willie."

Actually, this is a note to Amz.com to make you aware that,Yes I did order this CD BUT the songs listed are NOT the songs on the CD and I am happy with this song list.Listed are Love Sick (org vrsn)Can't Wait(live)Roving Gambler(live) and Blind Willie McTell(live). So I ordered the sister CD today 06/02/02 hoping that the songs listed on this CD WILL be the songs that are on this CD and not the one's I already have. Otherwise I will return it promptly SO PLEASE BE INFORMED THANK YOU. I will listen later and rerate these songs. I didn't know how else to let you know :)

5 out of 5 stars a must for bootleg fans.......1998-08-15

After a long wait ,i recieved my cd's,well worth it.The grammy version of love sick is much more powerful on cd.The sweetness of born in time makes it worth it alone.Even if you have these songs on boot, the cleaning-up the studio does works wonders.I'm begining to hear voices, but there's no one around.

          Album Description

German only double disc collection from the Rock/Soul vocalist. . Palmer first rose to fame in the '70s with a series of extremely creative and diverse solo albums. He could wrap his voice around a heartbreaking melody and make you cry, then get your blood boiling with a powerfully soulful rocker. He was a critical darling but didn't hit the high end of the charts until he teamed up with Power Station in '83, then followed that up with his biggest hit 'Addicted To Love' in '85. He continued to create amazing music until his death of a heart attack in 2003. 28 tracks including 'Addicted to Love', 'Some Guys Have all the Luck', 'Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)', 'Riptide', 'Maybe It's You', 'Looking for Clues', 'Woke Up Laughing', 'Johnny and Mary' and many more. Universal.
