Jay Farrar's back-and-forth forays into country and rock music naturally link him to Gram Parsons, yet Farrar's further bonded to the late pioneer by his ability to play assorted styles in various groupings and incarnations. After two albums and an EP of solo material that had him dipping his toes in -Revolveresque studio methods, Farrar has reassembled Son Volt (with all new members) for its first all-new recording in seven years. Named for the Oklahoma town that raised Woody Guthrie, the record's impulsively executed dozen are as much about turmoil as they are observation, complete with a recorded-live pulse complemented by guitarist Brad Rice (ex-Whiskeytown). Farrar continues his bold capacity for weaving historic references, progressive images and political jabs into his lyrics, then drives them home with a melodic cadence of rock ("Jet Pilot"), folk ("Medication") and balladeering ("World Waits For You"). Artistically potent, forever changing, he continues to build on his repute as one his generation's most important artists. --Scott Holter

Not what they once were, but still better than the rest.......2007-03-16
This is a fine album by a fine band. The orginal incarnation was a great band. Trace, in particular, was a transcendent ablum. All of the albums by the prior incarnation had moments that stamped themselves on me. This band, with the roots rocking approach they take, doesn't tap into the pained weariness that Farrar does so well. Still, buy this album, it is good. Just make sure to buy all prior Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo albums first.
Does not disappoint..........2006-06-14
I bought this CD after I heard track 8, Medication, on a local radio station - KEXP - very cool station, btw. Jay Farrar and co. continue to put out very good music. I have to admit though, the CD didn't reel me in right away. I had to give it a couple of listens before I really started to appreciate it, as I do all of the other combined CDs.
Oh, and Medication is still my favorite track...puts you in another place. A place where you wish you could stay longer.
Highly recommended.
Son Volt fan, but won't buy because of copy protection.......2006-06-13
stop reading if you've heard this before, I want my voice heard. I've been a fan of Jay's since Uncle Tupelo, and want to hear this CD. I won't, however, as it comes on a crippled faux-CD that won't copy to a high-fidelity or lossless codec for use on my home stereo system and my portable players.
And no I won't just buy from itunes, because that's a low-fidelity and lossy codec. If I buy a CD, I have the right to encode it to any codec I choose. Son Volt's publisher has decided this shouldn't be so, so I'm voting with my dollars and my amazon comments. For shame.
Good listen.......2006-05-23
The latest offering from Jay Farrar has been released under the Son Volt handle, the first "Son Volt" album since 1998's "Wide Swing Tremolo." However, names can be deceiving and this Son Volt album is, in reality, simply Jay Farrar's most recent solo project. The rest of the band members have been replaced.
As someone who is only a casual Son Volt fan (and a recent fan at that), I can say that I find this album to be pretty good despite the fact that it is a new band using an old name. I really enjoyed Son Volt's debut album, "Trace" and am still planning to get around to the following two. It's quite clear listening to "Trace" and "Okemah" back to back that the band has undergone a transformation. Jay Farrar has completely changed his singing style, and country elements are largely absent now (this is most definitely a rock record). In addition, many of Farrar's songs contain a political message now.
While I love "Trace," I understand that an artist has to change. Anyone expecting "Trace 2" is going to be disappointed listening to this album. On the other hand, anyone going into this album hoping for a good listen may find themselves satisfied. The album isn't perfect- Farrar's political stance is clear, but the songs just don't seem as important as he wants them to be. They certainly lack the generation-defining passion of a Bob Dylan or Woody Guthrie song. Still, agree with his political stance or not, most of these songs are still pretty damn good.
The album is front-loaded with many of it's best tracks, opening strong with "Bandages & Scars," followed by "Afterglow 61" and the best song on the album (and one of the political numbers), "Jet Pilot." The songs that follow don't quite live up to the standard the first few songs set, but none of them are outright bad.
Bottom line: this is a good rock album that isn't quite as politically important as it aspires to be. If that's what you're looking for, "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" will not disappoint.
Sound quality is amazing!.......2006-04-22
This is so well recorded. These are professionals in playing, recording, and writing rock and roll. I saw them live in lame ol' Spokane in our Riverfront Park, and they were perfect live (as I expected, because I had seen them twice before in really cool Seattle.) Jay Fararr is very talented, and I now think if I don't like something of his, it's just because I haven't caught up with him yet. I love blasting this album in my car. There are some amazing "road" tunes on this, and since I love road rock, this will always be on my playlist.

Solid Rock and Roll.......2007-01-10
Mostly, upbeat, very accessible album with Jay Farrar's soulful voice as the center of every song. If you're looking to try Son Volt, this is probably the first album to get. Trace is a better record, but this one is very easy to listen to and gives a good sense of the band.
Son Volt back and better than ever.......2006-08-04
I really enjoyed this disc. It's practically a boxed set, because the CD is a double-sided CD & DVD. The DVD contains the CD tracks with the lyrics presented visually, and also contains a great behind-the-scenes feature about Jay and the making of Okemah. There is a second, standalone DVD that contains live performances of Son Volt songs. So for the price of a CD you're getting a CD and two DVDs with 20+ songs. Not bad.
As for the music itself, the new Son Volt lineup sounds terrific. They tackle the early SV material (Drown) on the DVD and make it sound great, but the new songs are very very strong. I was disappointed by the last studio Volt album, Wide Swing Tremolo, but these songs are more accessible and rock harder without the excessive swagger and distortion of some of Tremolo. Jet Pilot is a rocking, wry commentary on Dubya and his fortunes and indiscretions. Atmosphere is, well, atmospheric. And Medication is awesome, very cool and hynotic. Great CD. Welcome back, Son Volt.

Album Description
"Restoration" by Kevin Bowe + The Okemah Prophets is where alt/country, singer/songwriter, British invasion and Minneapolis garage punk meet up. One critic described the band's sound as Steve Earle wrestling Paul Westerberg in the Byrds rehearsal space. The CD features guest performances by Jonny Lang and Shannon Curfman. It includes songs Kevin has written with Leo Kottke and Duane Jarvis. If you like some twang, jangle and punky energy along with soul-ripping songs then this is where to find it.
Customer Reviews:
Poetic Twist.......2007-02-17
Kevin puts a little twist into his lyrics. Always puts forth the melodies/tunes. Heard him back in Minneapolis in the early eighties. His group was "Summer of Love", knew right then that he could write. He wrote a song called "Rosetta the Stone", and many others that simply made you want to listen, think and dance all at once. "Restoration" has brought a driving, story telling cd to my collection.
Soul-Ripping Americana.......2005-02-10
Kevin Bowe is another great storyteller. He knows how to craft a song and does it well. Every song on this CD is a finely crafted lyrical treasure of Americana set to a progressive/alt/country style sound.
Although some of Bowe's songs have been a bit overproduced on recordings by guitarist/vocalist Jonny Lang and some other well known artists, Restoration remains a pure testament to his own outstanding musical and lyrical abilities.
Like a great big piece o' apple pie..........2000-08-18
With US music trends dipping precariously towards "Pop/Trash/Britney" stylings, where the artist doesn't even play an instrument, let alone write the songs and co-produce, it's great to hear some good 'ol "Americana". And the emphasis is on "Good", here. Restoration's 14 tracks are all finely crafted, intricate, but never overdone works of a group of people who obviously know what they're doing. They have gorgeous violin, jangling mandolin, and Andy Dee's incredible lap-steel. What more could you want?
You will add this one to your " ALL TIME FAVORITES " list.......2000-05-26
If you are a fan of any Midwestern / Austin City Limits / Southern Rock music, you will no doubt put this CD near the top of the list after you listen to it. I first heard " The Heart Of Everything " at 6:30 in the morning on a volunteer radio station and could not get that melody out of my head all day. As a " severely over thirty-ish " type person, it`s a rare instance that any music catches my attention. This one is different. This is the only CD I own three copies of. I originally got just one, but was afraid this one would get away, so I got two more just to be safe. The first six tracks will lift you up and get you going. Your toes will be tappin. The next six will mellow you out. " Rest of The World " will snatch you back up and " Goodbye Annabella " will set you back down again. Then you`ll want to hear it all again. Some songs have melodies that take you in one direction, while the lyrics of the same song take you in a different direction. It`s almost like getting two songs in one. Names like Delbert McClinton, Pure Prairie League, John Hyatt, Robert Earl Keen and others come to mind, but KB and the OP`s stand on their own. This is music to drive with the windows down. This is early "Friday Night" party music. This is late " Saturday Night " driving home music. This is where old rockers and the semi-sophisticated rednecks meet to enjoy something very rare today; good, solid music.
