In the '40s, a time-travel experiment allegedly occurred in a Philadelphia naval yard. This fantastic combo of Philly musicians--pianist/keyboardist Uri Caine, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of the rap combo the Roots--takes its name from that fictional event, and combines fusion, mainstream jazz, and R&B styles from the '70s to today. Augmented by guitar-legend Pat Martino and trumpeter John Swana, Thompson lays down some tricky jungle beats on the title track, while the threesome venture into the avant-garde on "(Re)moved" and into Latin on "IIe Ife." The group reincarnates Sun Ra's "Call for All Demons" as a funky instrumental, and they brilliantly revisit Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," while Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" is redone as a classical-style McBride/Caine duet. The late saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. was Philly's patron jazz saint, as evidenced by Caine's reverent solo piano rendition of Washington's hit "Mr. Magic" and McBride's funky, overdubbed one-man electric bass version of "Just the Two of Us." This threesome reminds us that the City of Brotherly Love still swings. --Eugene Holley Jr.

It sounds like what it looks like.......urban,modern jazz.......2007-04-13
I bought this one because of Christian McBride, but it's nothing like his own CDs,but I enjoy it a lot! Urban sound, nice groove,a mix of funk/soul/jazz
Simplemente excelente.......2005-05-30

I Was Expecting So much More..........2003-08-07
I know about Brother Question from the Roots. I know of Christian McBride from some of the CD's in my Jazz collection. I expected Question to bring the funk on with the drum. I was expecting this album to move...it just lounges. It seemed one dimentional to me. I was even more disappointed to hear the Remixed-Philadelphia Experiment. Great!--remixed mediocrity.
Smoth Grooves.......2002-11-05
In late 2000, three native Philadelphian musicians teamed up for an experimental Jazz-based eclectic mix of sounds. The outcome promised to be an impressive and unique touch which crosses the boundaries of three genres in the art of music; Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Classical. The three revolutionaries were drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (of the progressive, live Hip-Hop band, The Roots), famed Modern-Jazz bassist Christian McBride, and Classical pianist and keyboardist, Uri Caine.
Throughout the eleven tracks on the self-titled Rope-A-Dope Records released "The Philadelphia Experiment," the listener (you) falls into a sense of soothing relaxation as Caine tickles the ivories, Thompson dribbles the toms and rides the cymbals, and McBride slides his fingers up and down, right and left on his acoustic and electric basses.
The album is by no means any competition for classics as "Kind Of Blue" or "A Love Supreme" (parts of the album aren't really Jazz at all, and the general sound is more of a modern groove than a timeless classic from yesteryear in Jazz). But for what it's worth, "The Philadelphia Experiment" is an innovation in the obscure arena of rhythmic connections in Jazz, Soul, Funk and other forms of instrumental and vocal expression. From the Smokey-Club feel of "Lesson #4" to the laid-back title-track, to the covers of Marvin Gaye's classic "Trouble Man" and Grover Washington/Bill Withers' "Just The Two Of Us" (with the latter being a bonus hidden track at the very end), TPE is well worth the purchase. Guest musicians include Pat Martino and Larry Gold.

Thumbs Down !!.......2002-10-04
I have to agree with the negative reviews of this release. The mix is horrible. I'm a bassist, but I have to say the bass was WAY TOO UP in the mix. The drums sound like a tonka toy drum kit and everyone else is too far back in the mix. I'm trying to listen to what the musicians have to say but the mix is so unattractive that the music became grating to my ears after a few tracks. What were the producers hearing ???
But in spite of the mix I don't think too much was really going here. Can't recommnend this CD.

In 2001, jazz pianist and bassist and Uri Caine and Christian McBride teamed up with drummer Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson of the Roots. They created the Philadelphia Experiment, a jazzy shout-out to the City of Brotherly Love. This time around, the fabulous Philly remixer King Britt, who has worked with Tori Amos, Mary Wilson, and Macy Gray, rhythmically reincarnates the original tracks with club-friendly dance beats. Along with Britt's trip-hop textured "The Miles Hit (King Britt Scuba Remix)," the CD also features some fancy, funky, and futuristic retakes by several of Philly's finest DJs. The grooves range from the techno-tempoed "(Re)Moved" and Paul Edward's eerie, echoplexed bass lines on "The Orange Line" to the salsoul swing of the new track, "Grover III (The Theme to Massagejawn.com)" by ?uestlove (as the Randy Watson Experience). With their inventive use of special effects and synthesizers, remixers like King Britt have added jazz-like innovations to electronica-based pop music. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
A particular atmosphere which attracts me........2005-03-20
I love King Britt for his eclectic sounds in electronic (hip-hop, acid jazz, funk, deep house...) and I find this album pretty good and enough original. I can't really describe the style of electronic music in this philadelphia experiment remixed. Downtempo, future jazz, broken beats and some deep ambiances...and one thing is sure: this album makes you imagine. All tracks are good, particulary the tracks 1,3,5 (scuba remix),9 (obafunke remix) and 15 (bikter duplaix remix).
If you like king britt, you can't be disappointed. If you want to discover electronic music, buy something a bit less abstract
Decent to a Point.......2003-08-25
This album is more of 2.5 stars than 3, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. This album has a fairly wide variety of sounds for all kinds of listeners, with two or three standout tracks. However, the songs are overly repetetive. The songs are all fairly long (with the exception of the interludes, all based on streets in Philedelphia, and all less than 20 seconds) and monotonous. They have good beats and have interesting grooves, but it has the potential to do much more. This CD has classic music potential, and could have been if the songs were all kept shorter than 5 minutes or had kept changing throughout the 8 or 9 minute songs. After a while, it begins to lose your interest. It is unlike most of King Britt's other music, especially because he only wrote one song on the 19 track CD (That track is a Scuba mix, one of KB's many stage names, and is inferior to each track on his relatively new Scuba album.). If you are a KB fanatic, then this CD may fulfill your fix, but if you are looking for a "nu/acid jazz" fix, this may not be your cup of tea.
Experimental Sound.......2003-06-24
This CD is too advanced for the average listener. You have to be a true lover of music to feel this CD. I highly recommend it for those who have an eclectic ear.
A Good CD Just Got Better.......2002-09-03
I have been hearing for awhile that this CD was in the process of being remixed. By whom and in what format, I wasn't sure of. Not until a couple of weeks ago, I found out King Britt was behind this......and that's enough for me to get this with out hearing a track. Broken beats, eletronic thumps, phat beats galore and the Philly Experiment blended and smothered nicely to make this a great nu-jazz/acid jazz (I hate labels) vibe. Seriously, there isn't a weak or bad track on this CD to be found. Up-tempo, down-tempo, a head nod magnet is what your getting when you purchase this gem. King Britt & company continues to provide ear candy.

low-down and ballsy.......2001-10-23
ok..... for those of you that are into Greyboy and Soulive... you need to get this record. it defines groove. the bassist just whips out fatness while the drums pound out the nessesary backup to make each tune a force. "Aint it the truth" is the tune that shows just what these guys are capable of. but then there are straight ahead jazz tunes like "lesson #4" and "trouble man theme" which is reminicent of Miles. this record has it all and on the bonus track ("just the two of us") is a bass solo that sounds like, if youre familiar with, joseph patrick moore. if you want a great record for chillin out... buy this as soon as you can.

Album Description
"stars end" is an improvised 39 minute musical experiment that was recorded live from the WXPN radio studios in Philadelphia in November of 2004. September of 2004 - John Diliberto, host of the nationally syndicated radio show "Echoes", invited us to perform live in the studio in Philadelphia for a special broadcast of his show. Jeff Towne engineered and Chuck Van Zyl from WXPN took photos. Afterwards, we drank wine and ate pasta in a small Italian restaurant nearby. After dinner The band performed an impromptu concert at the table. John, Jeff, and Chuck quickly joined us, along with our managers and other guests on spoons, glasses, wine bottles and vocals. Sound exploded everywhere as all the patrons and employees at the restaurant joined in the melee.
November of 2004 - Jeff and Chuck invited the band to perform for their concert series "The Gatherings," at St. Mary's Church in Philadelphia. Afterwards, Chuck invited the band back to WXPN studios to perform live on the air. We arrived late - 1:45 a.m. - after French food and battling traffic. Jeff rushed to set up microphones and connect wires. We drank wine with John Garaguso from Progressive Soundscape, our managers Karen Lee and Karen Doran, and other guests. We asked Chuck what we should play, and he gave us free reign. We improvised for an hour.
Stars End was recorded live on November 14th, 2004, at WXPN radio station in Philadelphia. The CD is titled after Chuck Van Zyl's show "Stars End" which has aired every Saturday night since 1976. It was engineered and mixed by Jeff Towne.
The recording is due in large part and dedicated to Chuck Van Zyl, Jeff Towne, John Diliberto, Karen Lee, Karen Doran, John Garaguso, Spencer Gordon and Jessica Shaw.
Instrumentation - electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, cello, harmonica, wine bottle, tibetan singing bowl, vocals, dinner bell, small gong, whistling

I was lucky enough to hear Blow Up Hollywood perform this improv live on the air in Philadelphia at its inception. Truly music to space out to. If you are into meditation, yoga or are just a deep thinker, this is for you. It's a treasure for fans of God Speed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky. If you're stressed out, you need this.

Essential for jazz and hip hop lovers........2003-08-05
This is the album that redefines hip hop. It's versitility is only exceeded by its modesty. You listen to an album like this when nothing exists but you and the music. The "just the two of us" hidden track has to be heard to be believed. An unbelievably smooth album that'll make anyone want to be a little scandalous. Pick this one up.
