Ozzy returns with a startlingly heavy ninth studio album, a record filled with vows to continue his rock 'n' roll ways ("Not Going Away," "I Don't Wanna Stop"), meditations on the state of a world that has changed surprisingly little since Black Sabbath's early days ("Black Rain," "God Bless the Almighty Dollar") and the obligatory ballad ("Here for You," which can be read either as a letter to a lover or a love letter to his fans). With longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde providing plenty of brutal, soul-searing riffs and solos, there's no shortage of reasons to throw the horns, raise your fist, and yell. The rhythm section of Mike Bordin (drums) and Rob "Blasko" Nicholson (drums) is simply the best since Randy Castillo and Phil Soussan joined up for 1986's The Ultimate Sin and fires most accurately on the title cut, "Lay Your World On Me" and "Countdown's Begun." There's no "Crazy Train" or "Mama I'm Coming Home" here but Black Rain is a more convincing statement for it. The promises Ozzy makes here are sincere, he's not going away anytime soon--and he's still got plenty of game. --Jedd Beaudoin

Ozzy's Black Rain

I've been listening to Ozzy since I was 12, and I'm now 37. So we're looking at my 25th anniversary as a fan. I can't give an unbiased review because Ozzy means the world to me. Just the sound of his voice makes me feel like someone else sees the world the way I do. So that said, you can take this review for what it's worth to you.

Black Rain is a very good album. Of course it's not Blizzard or Diary, but it is a solid set of songs. True Ozzy fans will appreciate it; others probably won't--at least not all of it.

Here's a brief track-by-track commentary.

"Not Going Away" is a good start for the CD. The sentiment of "I'll never stop" is a bit cliché, but it works.

"I Don't Wanna Stop" is the first single off the album and repeats the "I'll never stop" theme of "Not Going Away". It's a disappointing song given its placement in the second slot.

"Black Rain" is a timely song, speaking to the war fought over the "black rain" of oil. I hate whiney political stuff in rock songs. Think Bono. But Ozzy isn't whiney and this isn't some stupid U2 song. He's a prophet of doom and this is his latest anthem. And don't forget this is the man who gave us "War Pigs." "Black Rain" follows nicely in the tradition of "Children of the Grave."

"Lay Your World on Me" is the highlight of the CD as far as I'm concerned. This ballad may be written with Sharon or one of Ozzy's children in mind, but it works even better if you interpret it as written for the fans--and who knows, maybe that's even (partly) what Ozzy intended.

"The Almighty Dollar" laments crass commercialism and perhaps the war. It's a little tough to take, given Sharon's crass commercialism, but it has a good sound.

"11 Silver" is excellent, dealing with addiction among other things. It really rocks and features a shredding solo from Mr. Wylde.

"Civilize the Universe" is another anti-war song, a theme that gets tiresome at this point on the CD. Still it has some great hooks, especially the chorus.
"Here for You" is the second ballad on the CD and repeats the theme of "Lay Your World on Me." It's a very good song, but not nearly as effective as "Lay Your World on Me".

"Countdown's Begun" is perfectly listenable album filler.

"Trap Door" is also perfectly listenable album filler, but a disappointing note to end on.

1 out of 5 stars uninspired effort.......2007-07-11

I don't blame ozzy as much as i do zakk wylde. the songs sound like leftover b-side BLS songs, throwaway tracks with patheticly boring guitar riffs and zakk's weakest solo efforts of his career. not only are the riffs as stock and generic as the lyrics / vocals, but the songwriting is so weak that even a diehard ozzy fan will skip each track in hope that the next is worth it. ozzy's voice sounds so computerized and proves that if your not going to write a decent cd, than why taint your legacy? they complain that down to earth (2001) was weak but at least it had some good songs and ozzy sounded like himself, it was original and zakk's drunk out of shape guitar playing ruined this album, as it plaguaed his leads on the last one. he's washed up and forgot what it means to be a guitar hero. they said this album would be the one to blow away no more tears (1991), yet is by leagues ozzy's weakest album of his career, solo or with sabbath.

3 out of 5 stars New style - the 80s are dead!.......2007-07-10

"Black Rain" brings a new Ozzy: industrialized and updated. The new album sounds a lot like Zakk Wylde's solo project: Black Label Society. The guitar's distortion is heavier and dirtier, and Ozzy's voice remains just the same. Incredible how his voice doesn't bow over to the years!

Black Rain has nothing to do with Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, Wicked, No More Tears, Ozzmosis or Earth. It's a new sound. The 80s are dead, my friend. If you long for the old Ozzy, forget about it. Zakk's guitar work sounds lazier (compared to the previous efforts), less melodic, less magical. Nothing to do with the great old Zakk Wylde. It's XXI century Ozzy Osbourne. What can I say? I miss the 80's and early 90's...

1 out of 5 stars Write on Point!.......2007-07-08

Skymac2 must be a ventriliquist. No need writing a review. Maybe when Metallica's next 'Tin Can Bangin' comes out, we can form a symposium for those who only know Ozzy since Zakk Wild, Wylde, Wilde (Ohh, whatever) has been the guitarist. Now don't attack me folk, Zakk is the best thing since Dime (Someone PLEASE, dispute me). I hate to say this, but, I think SOME groups need to revisit their early beginnings when they were Inebriated and they made GREAT music. Like Ozzy and Metallica. Megadeth, Exodus, Overkill, Anthrax and a ton of other 80's thrash bands are doing it. Over the Mountain is the PERFECT title of reveiw for the majority of Ozzy music in between Randy Rhoads and Zakk. Those other cats were ok until Ozzy started wearing Sequence. Look like that IDIOT from W.A.S.P.
PS, I think (not sure), SERIOUSLY think Zakk is from my hometown nown in Fords, NJ. Correct me if I'm wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Black Rain.......2007-07-03

There are quite a few songs on this CD that I listen to routinely! I hate when you buy a disc and all but 2 songs suck! Ozzy did a good job on this one....I was very pleasantly surprised. He hasn't lost his mojo!

5 out of 5 stars Ozzy never Quits.......2007-06-27

This is not about drugs or death but the troubles that life and wisdom bring. I enjoyed all the songs on this album, if you enjoy ozzy then this is a no brainer

1 out of 5 stars St. Anger.......2007-06-21

I was really excited when i thought ozzy was coming back strong. After the last cd I hoped he'd go back to the ozzmosis sound or possibly farther back. Ofcourse not. The only good thing about this cd is that I got two free seats to ozzfest that would have been 80-100 dollars otherwise. This is almost as big of a dissapointment as when Metallica released St. Anger minus a few good moments on the cd. The difference is that Ozzy isn't going around saying its the best thing he has ever done because he's done so many great things and knows it is no match. I just have a hard time believing it's zakk wylde on the album. It does sound like him, however I can't believe he would do this to ozzy. I just hope he keeps on trucking until he croaks.

1 out of 5 stars 2 hours 50 minutes and still no ticket.Ozzfest Sucks!.......2007-06-13

Uh..livenation.com changed the ticket date three times; I was up at 1:00 in the morning and they changed it again..just finished waiting 2 hours and 50 minutes for my so called free tickets in the Phoenix area, so don't bother spending the extra money for the ticket offer...okay cd, same ol' same oh..yawn. I wouldn't go to ozzfest now if you paid me. Ha!

5 out of 5 stars Ozzy's Done It Again!!!.......2007-06-10

I've Honestly Got To Say This Could Possibly Be Ozzy's Best Album Ever. This Album Has Some Awsome Track's. I Really Think Ozzy And Zakk Really Outdid There Selves. At First I Was Kinda Skeptical Of How Good It Would Be. It Was Definately Worth The Money. Especially When You Consider The Fact That You Get Two Reserved Seats To Ozzfest. That To Me Is Enough To Buy The Album Right There.

As each new Enya release has washed over all who have ears to hear, as each heaven-touched work leaves admirers sitting speechless in slack-jawed wonder, questions eventually come to mind: Might her layered, choral-like approach gradually become predictable or stale? Will she ever exhaust her deep reservoir of soul-stirring ideas? Remarkably, A Day Without Rain, Enya's fourth release since her 1988 breakthrough, Watermark, establishes new artistic heights for the gifted Irish vocalist and keyboardist. The project, polished and refined over a five-year period in the company of longtime collaborators Nicky Ryan (producer) and Roma Ryan (lyricist), may qualify as her best yet--a radiant, beatific collection of works that command attention with their cathedral-like resonance as they soothe your spirit with some of Enya's loveliest, most graceful voicings ever. The disc's opening three tracks (including the spellbinding "Only Time") form a gorgeous trilogy that suggest Enya has deepened her focus on the nexus where sophisticated pop and regal mysticism, the twin rivers of her singular sound, form a seamless intersection. The disc's gentle timbre is disturbed only once, and in memorable fashion, with "Tempus Vernum," a marshalling of mythic sonic forces that brings to mind the theme from the De Beers diamond commercial, but with a Celtic/Goth edge. Additional highlights abound. The closing "Lazy Days" will leave your soul dancing in a shower of flower petals and sunshine. A wonderful recording. --Terry Wood

3 out of 5 stars Classic Enya, But So What?.......2007-06-24

Now don't get me wrong -- I am an Enya fan. And as such I was looking forward to the release of the CD.

I probably listen to it the least of any of her CD's that I own (for the record, I have "Shepherd Moons," "Watermark," "The Memory of Trees," "The Celts," "Paint the Sky with Stars," and "Amarantine").

Why? Because with each previous (and subsequent) Enya release, there has been something that goes beyond the ethereal tones that we expect from her. And I just don't hear it here.

I do have my favourites on the CD just like anyone else ("Flora's Secret" and "Lazy Days"), but I wouldn't say that they stand out in any significant way from tracks on other CD's. If you have to choose one disc among Enya's later works, pick up Amarantine first, then grab this one later if you want a complete tome.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Enya CD.......2007-02-11

love all the selections, some are upbeat & cheery others more melancholy.

5 out of 5 stars Relax.......2007-01-17

I have had this cd for about 4 years and it still has the same effect......RELAXATION. It makes me feel very calm and centered.
I have 4 cd's from Enya and this one is the one I listen to because I love Only time, A day without rain. Those are my favorites!
If you are a fan of hers this one is a must!

5 out of 5 stars A very special one........2007-01-09

This CD have a meaning to me, the song Only Time have a healing message for everyone. Is like having someone who is giving you an advice in trouble times. You have to get this CD!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Melodic and Uplifting.......2007-01-04

This selection of music from Enya could easily be called "The Best of Enya" for my money. The music is Melodic and at the same time Uplifting - - it evokes a relaxed state of mind and body and recharges the psyche. I would heartily recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys easy listening.

Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Funk-rock-jazz classic! .......2007-06-27

This was, of course, Prince's breakthrough album, packed with huge hits: two #1's ("When Doves Cry", a bassless dance track; sterling funk-rocker "Let's Go Crazy"), one #2 (the slow, moving title track), and another Top 10 hit to boot ("I Would Die 4 U", Messianic but catchy), as well as the infamous "Darling Nikki" (which transcends "sexually suggestive") that spurred friggin' Tipper Gore to start the PRMC (an insult to everyone who believes in freedom of speech).Needless to say, it was huge -while I wasn't around during the decade, I think it was an '80s pop culture touchstone and certainly the album that made Prince a household name. It's also quite creative - check the bizarre ending to "Darling Nikki", which sounds like they chopped up and rearranged tapes or the one-ma nfunk-rock jam "Computer Blue". Add that to Prince's guitar, bass and keyboard playing everywhere (only Eddie Hazel is a better funk-rock guitarist) - particularly his guitar soloing on "When Does Cry"; "Computer Blue" and the title song. He's possibly the most talented multi-instrumentalists of our time, though Eric Dolphy and Brian Jones are stiff competitors. Topping it off is "The Beautiful Ones", a personal favorite of mine - it's one of the most intense, cathartic songs I've ever heard. So much for my perception of the '80s being totally soulless. Anyway, my only complaint - and a small one at that - is "Take Me With U" - not a bad song, but disarmingly sunny. Doesn't at all fit in with the rest of the album. Still, if this isn't his best album, it's second to Dirty Mind. (Oh, almost forgot the party song "Baby I'm a Star" - yet another standout song, the most traditional funk song here).

i love purple rain that and still is the best movie and soundtrack. i love darling nikki and beautiful ones. i love this movie. the other two movies was ok. prince is still sexy with the hip huggers and heels. no other man can wear that and be sexy. he is still handsome after all these years. i have been listening to prince since the 70's when he first came out. to all the fans purple rain was the movie of the decade. i love under the cherry moon also.

I love Prince and the movie Purple Rain, so naturally I would get it. The cd is worth every penny, I love every song on the ablum. It's truly one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing without having to skip over songs you don't like which is rare. I recommend this cd to all Prince fans and Purple Rain lovers.

What a great soundtrack...brings me back to the age of 14, but who cares! The songs that were not overplayed on the radio are even better than the ones that were, but "When Doves Cry" will always be a fave no matter what - add it to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Start to finish one of the best albums of all time!.......2007-03-10

What can I say that the other 166 reviewers already haven't?

One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.

My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.

Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.

Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

The middle album of the trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is Waits's best overall effort. The songs are first-rate, and there are a lot of them--19 in all, ranging from grim nightlife memoirs ("9th and Hennepin," "Singapore") to portraits of small-time hustlers ("Gun Street Girl," "Union Square") to bursts of street-corner philosophy ("Blind Love," "Time"). The album also contains the original version of "Downtown Train," which Rod Stewart turned into a smash hit. The image of "rain dogs"--animals who've lost their way home because the rain has washed away their scent--is an appropriate symbol for the entire cast of characters Waits has brought to life over the years, and this album has thus far proved to be his most enduring effort. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "They all start off with bad directions..".......2007-07-09

With a rough gravel voice that sounds like it was born from hard whiskey and harder living, a wise observant Waits sings empathetic tales of lost urban characters that are both funny, moving, and sometimes just plain odd. With his lyrics as his strongest strength, Waits is both a poetic and highly visual storyteller with rich lines like "...the bricks are all scared with jailhouse tattoos." The music is very unique, often sounding like a group of drunken street musicians clanking and stomping away on crude homemade instruments; spewing out primitive Rock N Roll, Blues, and a little Jazz. Bouncy waltzes like the title track and "Singapore" have a demented quality that brings to mind crazy homeless people dancing around a bonfire in a junkyard while one can easily visualize Waits sincerely crooning ballads like "Time" from a dirty curb as people pass by and ignore him. The exception is the anthemic power pop of "Downtown Train" made famous by a well done but rather plastic cover by Rod Stewart. Designed to stand out, the song has a bright soaring quality that climatically sweeps the listener out of the alleys and gutters of the tragic characters that populate the rest of the album. Very few albums have such effortless atmosphere, a true classic.

5 out of 5 stars Oddly addictive..........2007-05-29

An album this far of left field can rarely be described as addictive, but I've played this one about a million times and I never get tired of it. I have to admit though, I have purchased "Rain Dogs" three times in my life and ended up selling it the first two times I owned it because I just didn't get it. I don't think I was open minded enough to listen to this one the whole way through in my teen years, but the third time was a charm and this disc got it's hooks into me completely. On "Rain Dogs" Waits continued to experiment with the unique instrumentation he used on his previous release "Swordfishtrombones" and really took it to the next level, the result being one of his best albums. Not to mention he employed the likes of Keith Richards, G.E. Smith, and Robert Quine (a Richard Hell and the Voidoids and Lou Reed alumnus), which didn't hurt. While some of the songs off this disc are bizarre and abrasive, there are others that are so accessible one wonders why they didn't take the world by storm; for every "Singapore" there is a "Time", for every "Clap Hands" there is a "Downtown Train". I can't think of any other album from the 1980's which has aged this well and is loaded with so many great songs and great moments: the classic Keith Richards riffs on "Union Square", the screeching "Midtown", (which would have been perfect for a car chase scene in the movies), the bluesy groove of "Gun Street Girl" (which is achieved through such minimal instrumentation that it's genius), the explosive vocal Waits delivers on "Anywhere I Lay My Head" which threatens to blow your stereo speakers out with it's intensity, the country feel to "Blind Love" which features Waits' gravelly voice backed by Keith Richards' harmonies, and the list could go on and on. Like most of Waits' releases "Rain Dogs" was critically acclaimed but didn't sell in big numbers and has gone on to achieve a large cult following. It stands as one of his best albums, and I would include it as one of my favorite albums of all time. Once it gets it's hooks into you nothing else will hit the spot the way "Rain Dogs" does. Also recommended if you like this one is the live album "Big Time", where Waits bends and twists the arrangements of some of the songs off this album with great results.

5 out of 5 stars its like nothing else.......2007-03-15

my friend if your even looking at this i can tell you that you have already waited to long. this album is like nothing you have ever heard and is one of my personal favorites.if you only invest in one tom waits album this should be it.

5 out of 5 stars A classic in every sense.......2007-03-02

One of the greatest albums of all time.. no more, no less. Its hard for me to understand why I like Rain Dogs.. but then again its hard for me to understand why I like Tom Waits so much in the first place.. I guess he is more of an aquired taste to most people, reguardless, this album is an artistic masterpeice. Waits' lyrics are very poetic and abstract as usual.. and musically there is a balance here that most albums of any genre can't accomplish. There is a perfect mix of serious ballads and quirky, fun, polkas (or whatever you call them).

I cant really reccomend this album to anyone who has not heard of or heard Tom Waits.. because this band is rather like Primus in the sense that you either hate it, or love it.. and if you love Tom Waits, then you already have this album.

5 out of 5 stars another type of music.......2007-02-12

of course you've heard of elevator music. this isn't that. this is parking lot music. music you can hide in like thick dust clouds blown off the side of the highway by bad passersby, whom, after they've burnt rubber and sped on gone laughing and waving goodbye so-long, you can hate as people, but must respect for the cover they've provided you in your illicit doings. these dust clouds. these lovely songs.

Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors--namely, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti--combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a best-of CD. They gave their first concert in Rome. The event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.

This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles and at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop.

The 22 tracks making up The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La Traviata, to popular songs like "Singin' in the Rain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc; each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc captures the atmosphere of these extraordinary musical events. --Rebecca Agnew

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-03-18

This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.

5 out of 5 stars The best from the three greatest..........2005-08-11

The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone", "Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.

There are no solos on the cd. I think I've read somewhere that they felt there had been enough "three tenors cd's" and if they were to release yet another one it would be one containing what the audience demands, the three of them joining forces and performing together in the songs.
The result, in my opinion is highly recommendable. The three voices blend perfectly together. I have to admit that I have a personal favourite among the tenors and that I would never buy an entire recording featuring only one of the two others, but I recognize their talents and -as stupid as it may sound- since they are performing together I can also appreciate the other two. (I like them too, but in smaller doses....)Some people have commented on their problems with mastering the english language. If anything, I think it just adds to their charm. By the way, who is perfect??

The songs on this cd is a mixture of beautiful songs, heartwrenching songs, toe-tapping songs and powerful songs. It's wonderful to just listen to the beauty in the three voices. It's fun hearing Pavarotti pushing his "high-note-button" in "O sole mio" and Carreras and Domingo copying his stunt. I have no idea what they're singing about in "Manha de Carnaval", but boy does it sound romantic...... And "Dicitencello vuie" brings tears to my eyes (even if I'm still left in the dark when it comes to understanding the meaning of the words...) In "Because" Carreras takes my breath away when singing "because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee...through light and darkness, through all time to be, and pray his love may make our love divine...." (What woman wouldn't like to hear those words..??!?) Their rendition of "You'll never walk alone" should satisfy some of the soccer-fans since it's the anthem of a European football-club and "Nessun Dorma" will probably satisfy the rest of the soccer-fans, being the antheme of the 1998 world soccer championship. In short, there should be something for every taste on this cd.

It's a very "versatile" cd. You can play it almost everywhere. You can sing along to it in the car, you can dance around the house to it while doing your chores, you can put your feet up and unwind after a hectic week. Or you can write an Amazon review while listening to it.... (Feel free to add suggestions of your own here.....)

To make a long story short - a very enjoyable cd!

5 out of 5 stars Just Like the Real Thing!.......2005-07-14

A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving!.......2004-10-21

I got this CD as a gift and it changed my life! I was always a rocker and liked classical music, but never was much into this genre of music. This album changed all of that. Since getting the three tenors I've found a whole new world out there. Thank you guys!

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2003-07-16

Definitely worth purchasing. It is not an opera CD - it is a concert CD with 3 superb tenor voices that blend together so nicely. A wonderfully entertaining music CD with lots of variety and an opportunity for opera to grow on non-opera lovers. What else can you expect from the BEST. A DVD version would be wonderful.

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

This MGM musical helps to epitomize the genre. The 1952 film starred Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds's tracks, particularly "All I Do Is Dream of You" tend to make her sound like one of the munchkins from The Wizard of Oz, which is unfortunate. It's Gene Kelly's songs that are the most enjoyable. The title track is still wonderful, and so engaging you'll want to swing on lightpoles all over town. An outtake of Kelly's version of "All I Do Is Dream of You" is another gem, and the M-G-M Studio Orchestra is at its flawless best throughout--even if some of the incidental music sounds like a Tex Avery cartoon score. --Scott Wilson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Singin' with the film.......2007-02-25

This is a superb soundtrack; I agree with comments thankful for the lack of too much tap dancing (on cd?!?) or dialogs...
I am a big fan of this film (it's hard not to be) and when I want the whole experience, I sit and watch it.
Naturally, if you have no experience with this cinematic Donen/Kelly masterpiece, the cd would seem a bit bland regardless of some really fine tunes. In that case, go get your self the film itself! And then you might want to purchase this soundtrack as well.

4 out of 5 stars An Accurate Sountrack.......2007-01-10

Many of the cuts were very short but the disc covers the entire movie.

This soundtrack was a great buy. I had tried to find it every where and I finally found it here on Amazon.com at a reasonable price. If you like to listen to the orchastrations or just to the cast of this movie the Singin' in the Rain Soundtrack is an excillant find.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous........2005-12-31

What good is a soundtrack of Singin' in the Rain without taps? For goodness' sake, that's what the whole movie was about. Lost is a beautiful artistry of Donald O'Connor and Gene Kelly, in favor of bland music that was meant to serve only as a background for their talents. Their rhythms were what brought out the best in the dance numbers, not the dumb orchestra! Boooo.

5 out of 5 stars Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack).......2005-09-05

I purchased this CD at the request of my 9 year old daughter! She danced to "Good Morning" with her dance troupe this year. So, we rented the DVD, which she loved, and then wanted to own the DVD and the soundtrack. The music is fabulous! We all love to listen and sing along, and both my dancing daughters love to play the CD and make up their own dances. It is a CD the whole family enjoys!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT music!.......2007-02-24

LOVE this! My sister recommended this to my family, and wow, what a great, inspiring CD it is.

2 out of 5 stars Monotonous Album.......2006-08-10

Todd Agnew's song, Grace Like Rain, is an amazing song. However the album is composed of very similar songs... same tempo, same mood, same husky voice and instrumentals. The lyrics are so-so, some are inspiring, but the music is depressing, especially after 10 similar songs.

You might be better off buying a couple individual songs or a collection like Wow Hits with his best song on it. If you want a monotonous album, go ahead and spend your money.

4 out of 5 stars Todd Agnew Gets Real.......2006-08-07

Todd has a real, earthy husky voice and we can relate to his songs. He sings as if he is one of us, as he is.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful album of faith.......2006-05-16

Great songs, great heart. A little too "cute" on how Todd places the lengthy pauses between songs of the final track, but nonetheless a wonderful album. The title cut, "Grace Like Rain", is a classic. "Romans 12:1" is a keeper and the raw passion of "Wait for Your Rain" is absolutely powerful.
