Amazon.com essential recording

"Sister Morphine," the heart of guitarist Mick Taylor's first full studio album with the Stones, doesn't get the airplay of "Brown Sugar" or "Wild Horses." But it's one of the most vivid, horrifying songs about drug abuse ever recorded--as Mick Jagger sings "from my hospital bed," the ringing guitars of Taylor and Keith Richards build to full catharsis behind him. On that and lighter songs like the countryish "Dead Flowers" and the rocker "Bitch," Charlie Watts establishes himself as rock's prototypical drummer. He's creative and propulsive and knows how to swing, but he never overwhelms the song or the other Stones. --Steve Knopper

Amazon.com

Only a peak-of-their-powers Stones could manage to overshadow one of their very greatest albums by surrounding it in their studio chronology with Let It Bleed and Exile on Main St.. Sticky Fingers, however, is anything but an also-ran. Offering some of the band's most inspired twists on their basic approach--"Sway," the midtempo rocker that would sound orchestral even without Paul Buckmaster's climactic string arrangement; the gorgeous closer "Moonlight Mile"--this also rocks like the demon they had lived to face another day after Altamont. And, as if to prove their minds were still as dirty as their music, its keynote is "Brown Sugar." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE! ROCK, COUNTRY AND BLUES AT IT'S FINEST!.......2007-07-10

This is a classic album and is certainly in the top 100 ever made! My personal favorite cut is "Sway" I just love to hear Mick Taylor wailing away on his guitar until the fade out. Every cut is exceptional and there are a few hits on this album "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" mainly and "Bitch",but this album goes much deeper than those obvious cuts with the classic country "Dead Flowers" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" which rocks all the way to the jazz-like end! Every song is worth mentioning and this album should be in every music lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars "Wild Horses" should not keep you away from excellence!.......2007-06-02

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often ask to review and talk about various rock recordings from the 60's and 70's.

The Rolling Stones Mick Taylor period is a treasure chest that never empties. Mick was the most advantageous choice for the group. His leads, fills, and general sound pushed the band to new heights.

"Sticky Fingers" runs with the smoothest of engines from start to finish. The tracks are incredible examples of the Stones diversity and ability to excel. While the casual fan will gravitate toward "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses", don't deprive yourself of one of the most underrated tunes ever "Sway." Mick Taylor has his patent of excellence all over the arrangement of "Can't You Hear Me knocking."

Often the word great is used to excess but in this case it doesn't do justice!

Mick Taylor we miss you. A shame you left.

Be well always,
Craig Fenton

4 out of 5 stars Good Stones album..but the best?.......2007-04-19

"Sticky Fingers" isnt just a great Stones album, but a great classic rock album as well. The only thing that I have to debate about this album is that I dont think its the best Stones record. The honor would have to go to "Let it Bleed" Now, I am in no way comparing this to "Let it Bleed" because that just wouldn't be fair, since every song on "Let it Bleed" is excellent, which makes it an easy five star effort. The reason I give this only four stars is that is falls just a bit short from perfect. I feel when you are reviewing Stones albums from this time frame, that you have to be a little more judgemental, since the late 60's/ all 70's time frame was the best for the band. They even had some early 80's solid albums, but no where near the musical effort as the earlier stuff. "Sticky Fingers" seems to fall a bit short with "You gotta move", and "Dead Flowers" which in my opinion seem to be blues songs that are forced, instead of the blues infused "Sister Morphine" , and "Moonlight Mile" which the band seems to flow more gracefully. I am sure there will be some that love those songs, but I feel that they are just a bit overdone, and they just arent very solid songs, if that makes any sense. Its still a great record from the Stones, but I feel that it just isn't pefect, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be in everyone's CD collection. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars why no remaster?.......2007-04-09

Their best album. And my favorite album of all. But one star goes away for not remastering this one as they have the CD's of the early years. Surely it is deserving.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing The Rolling Stones.......2007-04-07

It's no wonder the Stones are now all so thin: not so much a case of Laugh And Grow Fat (they have enough to smile about, after all); it's more that the legend sucked them dry, thinner but not leaner, the accusations, bust-ups and sheer "legend" of the band leaving only dried out husks of men where once glamour pranced. And if 1972's "Exile On Main street was the devil's boogie that the Stones danced to once too often, "Sticky Fingers" is simply the best introduction to the Stones.

Ghoulish but extreme only in its retrograde glamorization of the roots of so much that 1972 stood for, Exile... is a potted history of rock 'n roll, even for those who have no conscious affiliation to the myths. "Sticky Fingers" is alternatively a concise, on the nail collection of songs, driven by Mick Taylor and Keith Richard's fiery interplay of guitars, a tight rhythm section, and Jagger's preening, pleading vocals. It has the hit single "Wild Horses"; the indulgent guitar workout "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"; "Dead Flowers" is a country ode that references heroin (although Jagger claims to hate both the genre and the drug); "Sister Morphine", a mini-opera of sexy degradation; sole cover version "You Gotta Move" a nod to the deep South influences that started the band in the first place; and "Bitch", one of the most underrated (and underplayed) of all Stones songs.

The front cover, like Warhol's other great contribution to rock mythology, promises to peel away the exterior to leave us with the lascivious debauchery that suburban purchasers so coveted. While the band didn't invent sex and rebellion, it made it somehow seem real for the late 60s generation. And for the last time, the Stones sound like a band making their own music, rather than the glorious ode to America that really comprises "Exile..." and the pastiches of former glories that marks everything post-'72. Therefore, "Sticky Fingers" is the way to remember the Rolling Stones: before they were sucked dry by the blues.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly solid.......2005-07-28

I love the first Architecture in Helsinki album. Fingers Crossed is like a breath of fresh air. It is light: Meditative without being overly ponderous. Makes excellent use of negative space. The CD is always over too soon for me & I have listened to it 7 times since I received it in the mail yesterday. This nice little group of Australians have made my week. The tone palate for the album is very well blended, perfectly in fact. With many of the home done type releases which have come recently, these eclectic instrumental combinations are hit & miss, particularly in communal bands with a large number of members where the hi-fi, low-fi argument is more likely to come to a head. Not so here, every note sparkles & shimmers. The production glows & blushes like a sunrises. It's a subtly done & wonderful thing. Similarly, male & female voices seem to blend together neutrally in an inspiring way.

5 out of 5 stars One, two, twee.......2005-05-15

Architecture in Helsinki struck gold in their very first release. The Aussie octet sound remarkably polished here, with their mix of twee pop and nonsensical writing -- imagine a three-way between Fiery Furnaces, Arcade Fire and Belle & Sebastian. The result might sound something like the deceptively cute "Fingers Crossed."

The intro "One Heavy February" errs on the side of twee, with catchy synths and lots of handclaps. Then it switches into the twinkly guitar pop of "Souvenirs," which sounds sweetly innocent at first. But listen more carefully to what Kellie Sutherland sings. "I've got souvenirs/but yesterday can't mean too much/have we missed an opportunity?" she sings sadly. "For what once was gold/ and once was rich/now is poor."

That sound of poignant innocence permeates the entire album, over music so exuberant, warped and playful that it's enchanting. The general sound is that of guitar pop laid over thickly with keyboard, horns, and more handclaps. They also veer into childlike whimsy in songs like "Spring 2008," and a clarinet at the start of "Imaginary Ordinary."

But the songs slowly lose their more innocent vibe, sounding more and more melody. Even the catchy upbeat "Fumble" and childlike "Where You Been Hiding" sound melancholy. It's a bit like growing up -- life may still be beautiful, but you gradually lose your innocence and unbridled joy. By the end, we have Sutherland and Cameron Bird wistfully asking "where you been hiding?"

Writer/musician/vocalist Cameron Bird reportedly said that "Fingers Crossed" was the sound of a band figuring out what they wants to do. That explains why they have the musical naivete of a band just doing what they want to do, without imitation or preconceptions. So no matter how poignant, it's amazing music.

With eight band members, Architecture in Helsinki gets to really include a lot of instrumentation -- sparkling keyboard, guitar, drum and bass. But they also include instruments like clarinet, trumpet, trombone and tuba, which add a circusy note. Just try to find other pop music that has that kind of robust brass.

And songwriter Bird makes truly amazing lyrics. At first glance, they don't seem to make much sense ("Found a flaw in the ending of a book that I've read twice/I set her straight, it's not based on your life"). But after awhile, the gleefully strange lyrics do start to make sense, as Bird and Sutherland interweave their high, delicate voices and sing about how "I wrote you a letter in capital letters/saying all that I care for, all that I care for is..."

Architecture in Helsinki are one of the most promising pop bands in years, and "Fingers Crossed" is definitely worth having, for anyone who likes the idea of an Arcade Fire/Belle & Sebastian cross.

4 out of 5 stars Light and airy.........2005-05-09

I'm reviewing this album as it comes to it's third loop at 3:50 in the morning. It was given to me by a friend several hours ago.

Most of all, i'd have to say that in my opinion, the majority's comparison to belle and sebastian seems a little extreme. i can see some threads of similarity, possibly in some of the production with horns, and the softness of the voices. some harmonic elements recall isobel's style, but otherwise, i wouldn't compare the two. if any comparison had to be made, i'd call them a softer, lighter, more structured Animal Collective.

if you enjoy cleverly put together, quirky, airy music that makes you dance around in your headphones, you'll enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Precious and precocious.......2005-01-10

It's like listening to a bunch of really gifted children making music...and that's a good thing. Sometimes the guy's voice reminds me of an innocent version of Billy Corgan circa Gish, but don't let that deter you. This is no smashing pumpkins...and that's a good thing. It's absolutely adorable and the perfect Sunday afternoon in the apartment music.

    5 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect.......2007-03-20

Almost every song on here is great. This album reflects the band at their politically angry best. Musically, there's great guitar work and vocals with interesting lyrics that actually have something to say.

5 out of 5 stars I'm gonna try not to be biased here... aww, screw it!.......2005-12-29

HOLY SMOKES this is a good record. This is probably the most underrated thing I have ever heard in my entire life. And I'm not just saying that because I hail from Northern Ireland, where the Fingers are from. No, when people begin their collection of punk albums, along with Never Mind The Bollocks and the Clash and what have you, this is a must have. If you like the Sex Pistols, Anti-Flag, The Clash or The Unseen, you will love this because it sounds like a mix of them all. The only way I can think to describe Jake Burns's voice is that it sounds like he's been gargling barbed wire.

1)Suspect Device: This is the album version of the song, and much more grainy and not as polished as the single. It's one of my favourites, the chorus is amazing and the lyrics really hit home.

    2) State of Emergency: Not as good as the others, but still good. Has some great lyrics.

    3) Here We Are Nowhere: I didn't think much of this at first, but it's so catchy it will stick in your head for days. Trust me.

    4) Wasted Life: Somehow Jake's voice sounds even more sharp on this song. It's about not wanting to be a soldier.

    5) No More Of That: Better than State of Emergency, but not the best.

6)Barbed Wire Love: This is an odd love song. At one point the Stiff Little Fingers sound nothing like they do usually. But it's brilliant. After this the album gets really good.

    7) White Noise: An anti-racism song. Very sharp and cut edge, one of the best on the record.

    8) Breakout: Pretty much an anti- 9 to 5 song. I love it.

    9) Law and Order: This is a nice little punk song. OK, so nice may not fit it exactly, but I'm running out of adjectives. This is a song about the pigs. They do a nice job of it too.

    10) Rough Trade: This is a fantastic song about a certain big record company that did the Fingers over. Again one of my personal favourites.

    11) Johnny Was: I don't know much about reggae, but I know that I like this song. It's lengthly, though (EIGHT MINUTES? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ONE TRUTH, TWO MINUTES, THREE CHORDS AND 4 OVER 4 TIME SIGNATURE?). But I absolutely love the intro.

    12) Alternative Ulster: This was one of the first punk songs I liked, again maybe because of the fact I am living in Ulster where it's boring at the best of times. But I LOVE the lyrics. I mean, the 2nd verse: 'Is this the kinda place you wanna live? Is this where you wanna be? Is this the only life we're gonna have?'. And the last screaming bit: 'They say they're a part of you, but that's not true you know. They say they got control of you, but that's a lie you know. They say you will never be free.'

    13) Closed Groove: Weird, weird song. But it will stick in your head.

14)Suspect Device (single version): I've already reviewed this song, so all I'll say is this one is more polished with no swearing.

15)78 RPM: I love this song, I really do. It's more upbeat than the others, but that ain't a bad thing.

    16) Interview: This is pretty interesting, I found parts of it funny ie. Jake Burns's first radio interview, John Peel's little obsession etc.

All in all, a great album, or good craic as we say over here.

Capitol initially released Roy Clark's first album in 1963 to little fanfare. Razor & Tie's reissue of this fully instrumental LP, recorded before Clark signed with the label, is valuable in that it showcases his remarkable six-string gifts on a "groovy" blend of traditional country-swing and the modern twist sound that was so popular with the kids at the time. Just when you think he can't pluck 'em any faster, he'll double-time at blazing speed with continued precision accuracy. The one drawback is that the total running time is relatively brief, at about 30 minutes. Twelve tracks in all, this record allows country fans to get in touch with some of the genre's roots, albeit in a "hip" setting, and confirms that "the guy from Hee Haw" can really play. --Jason Pascal

Got this for my dad for his birthday, and he loves it. No slow songs in the bunch!

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have.......2002-08-18

Being a hard rock fan of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc., I caught a portion of "Texas Twist" at friend's party and asked who the incredible guitarist was. When I was told "Roy Clark", I said "You mean...?". That's right. The same goofy guy I saw on HEE-HAW as a kid. For anyone who appreciates guitar, any guitar, Roy Clark may be the best of time, and of all classifications.

5 out of 5 stars Told you so.......2001-12-02

I told my Freind who is an educated guitar player about seeing Roy Clark on HEE-HAW when I was a child (13). I remembered him as really "cooking" and proved it to him tonite with your helpful snips. He wants it now .

5 out of 5 stars What a flood of memories!.......2001-09-02

I still can't believe that I found this album on CD. My parents bought this album when I was a kid, maybe 10 years old. I ended up confiscating it and wearing the grooves off it. If you love guitar pickin' (Alvin Lee, Steve Morse, Outlaws,...) you'll love this. I saw Roy on an episode of "The Odd Couple" and he just RIPPED UP!! an acoustic guitar with a 2-minute flamenco thrash solo. WOW! The Cd's short (30 min. +/-) but Oh So Sweet! Thank god for CD's. Now I can play it to death all over again. Memories...

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2000-02-12

A little short but unbelievable. I have only listened to Roy Clark on Hee Haw. I found this CD at Yahoo's Broadcast site where you can preview the entire thing for free. I immediately came to Amazon to see if I could buy it! As another review I read explained ... the title says it all, and if Roy Clark were a classical guitarist he might be the best ever. This CD leaves you begging for more, and makes you wish you could have seen these songs played live. Can he really move his fingers that fast? Next I am going to Ticketmaster to see if Roy still tours!

White rappers generally divide into two camps: the Beastie Boys disciples and the House of Pain clique. For the former, honky hip-hop has nothing to do with the African-American experiences that gave birth to the rap form; rather, it is borrowed to express the middle-class, often suburban, ennui that comes from too much pop culture and too much time on one's hands. In the latter, groups attempt to co-opt the Afrocentrism and identity worship from black rap and use it as a template for their own particular ethnic trumpeting--Irish, in HOP's case. On their debut album, Use Your Fingers, Bloodhound Gang make it clear which group they expect to be confused with: "No, I'm not the guy from the Beastie Boys!" yells Jimmy Pop (or is it his partner Daddy Long Legs?). Hailing from suburban Philadelphia, BG are a self-contained frat party dying to offend anyone who'll listen with their often hilarious, in-your-face political incorrectness. They fight for their right to be moronic throughout--whether worshiping Rip Taylor or invoking the Cavity Creeps from an old toothpaste ad. It's not all just fat-chick and cripple jokes, though: BG back up their obnoxious idiocy with some fairly wise musical maneuvering. While their age and background lead them to repeatedly mine the '80s for material--Duran Duran and Cure samples, Michael Jackson and Blondie interpolations, a "Kids in America" cover--their sly comments and ingenious a cappella snippets prove they're surprisingly sharp and able lads. --Roni Sarig

Amazon wants me to review this. And _____, I will. If you like The Bloodhound Gang, and don't own this, then you are missing out.

One of the best rap albums ever. THere's no rock on this really, just rap. SOunds like _____? Looks like alot of people slam this record. I say this record rules. It's one of the best rap albums ever. The record is made like this.

1.Remember Mope. Yeah, I _______ loved all the refrences to pop culture. Well, that's this record is built on raps like that, only alot better. IT's pure rap, remember that. And best of all, there's no tough guy talk really. Yeah, some get you _____, but instead of bragging about how large his ________ is, or how many skinny, hot girls he gets. IT's the opposite. Jimmy knows that he has a small ______, and says that, and sings about how he _________ fat chicks after getting drunk, cause that's all he's gonna ___________ get.

2.Samples. No ________ beat that sound like a four year old made it. Some really cool samples. (the most creative. The Sanford and San Theme).
3.One line choruses. Lot's of party choruses.
4.Skits. Placenta hunting, Rip Taylor. and a slam on Axl Rose (showing how desperate the _________ was).

This is not for poser fans. IF you only like The Bad Touch, Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo, and Fire Water Burn, stay away. IT's rap, and that only really, besides Kids IN America and KIDS Incorporated. I loved it, and I think it's great. YOu should get it.

2 out of 5 stars The totally unofficial Bloodhound Gang `Use Your Fingers' Q&A.......2006-09-07

Q: So was the mega-successful, multi-platinum Rock/Hip-Hip crossover masterpiece `One Fierce Beer Coaster' the Bloodhound Gang's first album?
A: No, it wasn't. The band's first album was `Use Your Fingers', released in 1995.

Q: So how come I've never heard of it?
A: You haven't been looking in the bargain bin at your local record store.

    Q: Was it any good?
A: The record-buying public didn't seem to think so, and neither did the band. Bloodhound Gang actually split up after the release of `Use Your Fingers' because of the poor response it received, but reformed again.

Q: So what's the title all about then? Is it referring to Guns n Roses or female masturbation?
    A: Yes to both.

Q: So what's it sound like?
A: It sounds just how you might imagine the predecessor to `One Fierce Beer Coaster' would sound.

Q: So it's got the funky beats then?
    A: Er, sort of.

Q: And it's got the silly lyrics?
    A: Yes.

Q: And the dumb bits between the songs?
A: Of course it does. It's a Bloodhound Gang album isn't it?

Q: And does the CD have some dumb instructions on it?
A: Yes! These questions are really dumb!

Q: Sorry, but I'm doing my best. There are lots of obscure references to American pop culture here. Can you help me out?
    A: I'll try...

Q: Is that really Rip Taylor on the first track?
    A: Yes, it is.

    Q: So who's Rip Taylor?
A: A camp American comedian, famous for being fat, having spiky hair, throwing confetti when he tells jokes, and being camp. Also known as the Prince of Pandemonium.

Q: Who are Vera, Flo and Mel?
A: All three are characters from the sitcom "Alice". Vera and Flo are waitresses, while Mel is the cook who owns Mel's Diner.

Q: Who are Jerry's Kids, and why do they need a sponsor?
A: Comedian Jerry Lewis got all serious when he started getting old, and started a charity for disabled children. The children helped by the charity are known as Jerry's Kids.

Q: What was the Rockford Files?
A: It was a 1970s police show starring James Garner.

    Q: What are spaghettios?
A: Little rings made of spaghetti, shaped like the letter O.

Q: What was Barbara Eden doing in a bottle?
A: She was Jeannie in the sitcom "I Dream Of Jeannie", where she was a genie who lived in a bottle. Look, this is getting boring. Ask some questions about the music!

Q: Er, OK, I'll try. Um, did Bloodhound Gang write all the music?
A: Of course not! They ripped stuff off all over the place and covered Kim Wilde's "Kids In America". However, The Cure wouldn't let them rip off a sample, which is probably a good thing, because this album is bad enough on it's own.

Q: Is it as good as Lawnmower Deth's "Kids In America"?
    A: No.

Q: Is "One Way" a Blondie cover, "Go Down" an AC/DC cover, and "No Rest For The Wicked' an Ozzy Osbourne cover?
    A: No.

Q: Are any of the songs clever and funny?
A: No, but some are stupid and funny, like `You're Pretty When I'm Drunk', and he's pretty ...ing drunk.

Q: So what else can you tell us about the music?
A: That's a stupid question! Um, well, it sounds like the demo tunes on tinny little hand held keyboards, but it took five guys to make the sounds. Occasionally a guitar pops up, but not often enough.

Q: So, um, is this like, any good, or worth getting?
A: It depends. If you like other Bloodhound Gang albums, then you might like this. If you are just a casual observer, who quite liked "Fire Water Burn" then you'd probably be very disappointed.

    Q: So it's rubbish then.
A: I wouldn't go quite that far, but it's not a masterpiece. Finished with the questions?

    Q: Yes.
    A: Good.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Ive heard from Bloodhound Gang.......2006-07-25

I was excited about this cd...then I started listening to it. If I wanted Beastie Boys I would have bought Beastie Boys. Its nothing but lame 80's rap loops and a few butt rock tracks. Nothing like the Bloodhound gang of old. What happened to the techno/pop? What happened to somewhat punk? The only good song on the cd is Kids incorporated. I would consider this their joke cd since about half of the tracks are garbage and only 40 seconds long. One word...lame.

5 out of 5 stars The funniest one of the bunch..........2006-04-19

'Bloodhound Gang is here to get it on, so rock on brothers, rock on' - There are a lot of positive things to say about Beer Coast and Boobies, but Use Your Fingers is still the most unique! Rip Taylor, Duran Duran, Blondie and The Cure samples, trying to find his wife's placenta, then turning her upside-down to hold Jimmy's beer, and the nastiest last bonus track of all time! The only things that I would omit is Kids In America and Sh*tty Record Offer, but that certainly doesn't affect me giving this full length 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The one bad thing about this album.......2006-03-25

After listening to some of the newer seemingly un-inspired Bloodhound Gang records, I have to put in some kudos to this one.. with TONS of horribly inappropriate genius lyrics.. this is a great album..

and the only bad part is that Daddy Long Legs seems to rap a little too much about how he's "cold kicking lyrics". Trust me.. listen to this album too much like me and that starts to get really annoying...

but Jimmy Pop's obscure pop culture references MORE then make up for such a minor thought.

    4 out of 5 stars A large sampling of Stravinsky's piano music........2005-03-04

I bought this cd primarily for "Movements for Piano and Orchestra", a short piece (about 9 minutes) using the 12 tone serial technique developed by Arnold Schoenberg. It is intriguing to hear the "neo-classicist" Stravinsky write in this style. To my ears, and I'm a fan of 12 tone, no new ground is broken here by Stravinsky (the piece was written in 1958-9, seven years after Schoenberg's death) but it's a good piece. The rest of the works are tonal.

I'm not knowledgable as to whether this cd contains all Stravinsky's piano compositions but there is a lot here. Michel Beroff is a fine pianist and the recorded sound is very good. The liner notes are lacking but I've come to expect that from "bargain" classical cds.

This is a two cd package. For $12, I'm very glad to have this set in my collection.

    3 out of 5 stars NOT A GREAT SHOW, BUT FUN, NONETHELESS . . . ........2007-06-20

HAZEL FLAGG is a curious animal. The show, ' . . . a satire on the manipulation of people, especially the general public," is based on Ben Hecht's screenplay for the 1937 Carole Lombard/Frederick March vehicle, "Nothing Sacred," itself based on a story by James Street. Hecht is also responsible for the musical's book, with lyrics by Bob Hilliard. Jule Styne, fresh from the success of HIGH BUTTON SHOES and GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, not only wrote the music but acted as the show's producer as well.

HAZEL's disappointing 190 performances (compared to over 700 for each of the previous shows) can be blamed on that old Broadway bugaboo: bad book. "The show did lose something in its transformation to a musical. The songs and dances tended to drag what was originally a fast moving story and, as many other show writers have found, satire is something that rarely works as a musical. Ben Hecht, who was successful as a playwright, was not at ease with a libretto and the inexperienced producer should have recognised this and brought in help. Even so, Jule Styne's score, whilst not quite top notch Styne, does include the enchanting 'How Do You Speak to an Angel?' and the popular 'Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York." (from the liner notes by Rexton S. Bunnett)

Marc Miller, writing in "The TheaterMania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings," says HAZEL FLAGG was " . . . intended as Helen Gallagher's stepping-stone to stardom in the title role of a Vermont lass who's thought to be dying of radium poisoning and is transported to New York by EVERYWHERE magazine for a supposed last fling. (Guess what happens to her prognosis.) Gallagher works very hard here, and her contralto belt is strong and secure. She's supported by such Broadway reliables as Benay Venuta, Jack Whiting, . . . and Thomas Mitchell (who doesn't sing a note but took home a Best Musical Tony anyway). . . . the show does sport amusingly elaborate vocal arrangements by Hugh Martin."

The score is not nearly as dull as Mr. Miller would like us to believe. In addition to "Angel" and "Every Street," the score includes "I Feel Like I'm Gonna Live Forever," "You're Gonna Dance with Me, Willie," and the rather bizarre "Laura de Maupassant," all delivered in fine style by Ms. Gallagher. And "Salomee," here sung by Dean Campbell, became a minor hit for Dinah Shore.

The CD is blessed with a bunch of fun bonus tracks: a young, in-wonderful-voiced Eddie Fisher singing "How Do You Speak to an Angel?", Dinah Shore's recording of "Salomee," Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians performing "I Feel Like I'm Gonna Live Forever," and six tracks by Ms. Venuta, including "When Frances Dances with Me" and "Waltz Me Around Again, Willie" ("Willie Fitzgibbons who used to sell ribbons/and stood up all day on his feet/Grew very spooney on Madeline Mooney,/Who'd rather be dancing than eat./Each evening she'd tag him, to some dance hall drag him,/And when the band started to play,/She'd up like a silly and grab tired Willie,/Steer him on the floor and she'd say,/Waltz me around again, Willie . . . " What fun. The bonus songs alone are worth the price of admission.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm No Schoolgirl, but I Know What I Like.......2006-06-11

Mick Taylor's haunting guitar can be heard throughout this record. The guitar marriage between him and Keith was, without a doubt, a match made in heaven. The two just knew how to drive a song, well ten songs in this case. And if these guys are driving the car, Mick Jaggar is riding shotgun, mike in hand, singing his heart out, and steadily beating his pound tattoo to keep the guitars in time is none other than that drummer extrodinaire Charlie Watts. Let's face it, the bass is good too, can't forget Bill. Can't forget the host of guest musicians either who make up this stew. Do you think they all knew back then what they were about? What they were creating? Certainly they knew "Brown Sugar" would raise some eyebrows. And they had to know mommies and daddies were gonna be furious about "Sister Morphine." Still, this record overcame it all. Just about every rock publication on earth has declared this record to be one of the best ever made. It is.

5 out of 5 stars Get You Grooving.......2006-06-11

The Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers" is certainly one of the greatest rock and roll records to come out of the Boomer Generation, actually it's one of the best records to come out of any generation. Somewhere along the line the boys in the band got transformed from the bad boys of rock and roll into some mighty fine musicians. Well, they were still, and still are, I suppose, the bad boys of rock. A listen to this record will tell you that. I mean could anybody but the Stones have gotten away with "Brown Sugar" and "Sister Morphine?" So, let's agree, they were still the bad boys. I guess it's possible to be a rocker and to not be so good (just kidding), but all kidding aside, this is a record that will rip you right out of your seat, get you dancing, get you rocking, get you thinking, get you grooving.

    5 out of 5 stars A Rolling Stones Masterpiece.......2006-06-11

"Sticky Fingers from start to finish is nothing short of masterful. It just flows. And it does it without bowing or kowtowing to anybody. "Brown Sugar" must have blown a lot of minds back in the day. And "Sister Morphine," wowza, I'm surprised the holier than though folks who want to control everything we see and hear weren't out publicly melting these records down. But maybe they couldn't, maybe they were too mesmerized by Mick Taylor's knock down drag out guitar playing. Or maybe Bobby Keys sax warned them away. Or maybe they were just afraid of street fighting men, whatever. Actually this record apparently did tick off Franco. You know the guy who ran Spain, because when it came out there, "Sister Morphine" was replaced with "Let it Rock" and that totally glorious Andy Warhol zipper cover was replaced with a photo of the band. I guess Franco thought it obscene, which is strange coming from a man who every thinking person on the planet found obscene. Anyway, you won't find it obscene, not if you've got heart.

5 out of 5 stars So Far Beyond the Ability of Mortal Musicians.......2006-06-10

This is the third record of the five Stones records produced by Jimmy Miller, five records that in my opinion are the five best all time Stones recoring. Sadly, I can't rate them one through five, because they are all so outstanding. The ten songs on "Sticky Fingers" show off all the abilities of the band, from the bluesy "I've Got the Blues" and "You Gotta Move," to the rockers "Bitch" and the wonderfully, politically incorrect "Brown Sugar" and on to the countrified "Wild Horses" and "Dead Flowers," there is nothing but excellence exhibited here. Not only the Stones, but the guest musicians as well, excel far beyond the abilities of normal musicians. Ry Cooder's work is so chilling on "Sister Morphine" that it takes your breath away. Bobby Keys sax on "Brown Sugar" rips right into your soul. This is certainly one of the best and finest records ever made.

    The Rolling Stones-Sticky Fingers*****

Exit Brian Jones, enter Mick Taylor. With the death of Brian Jones The Rolling Stones recruted virtuoso guitarist Mick Taylor, who was previously known for his work with the great John mayall. Let It Bleed was the first introduction to Mick Taylor, though he only played on one song. Sticky Fingers was Mick Taylors album. Of all the albums to feature the guitarist he had the most input during this one. Sticky Fingers is one of the four 'classic albums' in The Rolling Stones cannon. Many fans concider this to be the very best Rolling Stones album of all tuime, and for good reason too, It's amazing. For me it comes down to this one and Exile On Main Street for the title of best album. One day Ill say this one then the next I'll say Exile On Main Street, well one thing is for sur they are both amazing. During the recording of Sticky Fingers the band was at its all time creative peak in my opinion. The lyrics are the all time best that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ever wrote. The musicianship, especially the guitar playing is amazing here, Charlie Watts is as always the heart and soul of the band, while Bill Wymans bass is less prominant and only comes through when really needed showing his versitility as a great player. The songs are amazing many of which went on to become radio staples, classics, and really rock and roll standards.

'Brown Sugar' which starts of the album set a new standard for the way rock and roll could and should be played. Being concidered by many to be one of the all time greatest songs of all time as well as the very best Rolling Stones song ever, 'Brown Sugar' starts the albm off just right. Next is 'Sway' with more of a laid back country feel to the music and vocals. The song comes across almost gosphel in places like it is straight out of the south. Also the lyrics give that feeling with lyrics of an evil force keeping you in its sway. Clearly a song written under the influence of the great late delta blues singer and guitarist Robert Johnson. And not to mention the amazing guitar solo played during the song by Mick Taylor. Easily the mans all time best guitar solo. Many will disagree but for me this is it. 'Wild Horses is the first of two songs on the album that were inspired by Marian Faithfull's drug overdose. The chorus is "Wild Hourses couldnt drag me away" which was the first thing she said after she came out of her coma. It's a slow acoustic song with amazing vocals and slide guitar. The song has since become one of the bands biggest and best known songs. Next Is the amazing somba rocker 'Cant You hear Me Knocking' which is an all time favorite of mine and contains Keith Richards' all time best guitar riff, few would dissagree. It starts out as a bluesy rocker before it eases it's way into almost a samba, at the end. Truly one of the best songs the band ever wrote, and it also contains some of Mick Jaggers best ever vocals. "You Gotta Move' is a slow bluesy song the band remade which is a traditional blues number. While I do like the was the band performs it, I still think the best version of the song was done by Aerosmith on their album Honkin' On Bobo, which is a fantastic album you should also check out. Moving On. Next is the awesome rocker 'Bitch' which is yet another classic Rolling Stones song that still gets regular air play on the radio.Great use of horns and the guitar isnt bad either. The lyrics are an all time favorite. The song reminds me of something The Temptations could have recorded in the late 1960's or the early 1970's.The song is fantastic and really the main reason hwy I bought the album. Next Is the beautifuly sentamental 'Ive Got The Blues' which features some nice vocal work from Jagger and is a really pretty song to sit and relax with while you listen. People either think the next song is the weakest song on the album or one of the bands all time best. I think 'Sister Morphine' is one of the very best things the band ever wrote. It too was inspired by the Faithfulls drug overdose, as easy to spy in the lyrics, which she helped to write. Probably my second favorite song on the album now that I think about it. 'Dead Flowers' is a ocuntry rocker that the boys pull of nicely. The lyrics are cool, and Micks fake country vocals do well. Slash of Guns 'N Roses once said that Mick Taylor's slide guitar solo is his all time favorite, so thats saying a lot. As the album comes to a close it does so wonderfully with the song 'Moonlight Mile.' A song that always reminds me of the Doors' song 'Moonlight Drive' and I dont know why because the only similar thing is the title. The song is slow and beautiful and eases the album out perfectly.

Originaly the album featured a zipper on the cover which was designed by the late great Andy Worhol. This is an album that should be heard by all fans of any form of rock and roll, blues and yes even country. With Sticky Fingers The Rolling Stones showed the world that there was on one like them and that there never would be. With two lgendary albums already under their belt the The Rolling Stones set in stone their place in music history as one of the most eciting bands ever. Recomended to all!!
