Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-10-20

It is rare in this world where experience has relegated itself to Macdonald meals to meet something that still provides an excuse for arguing that we, humans, are above other animals. The music contained in this album enchants the ear providing for a further invocation of fantasy in which we may achieve to find the beauty that is so much absent from the desertification of the everyday. Karajan il maestro dei maestri provides for a perpetual inebriation of the animal self with his perfect conduct of the Berliner Philarmoniker. This record may not be the one to have if indeed you only strive to obtain complete individual works but nevertheless it is a superb selection.

3 out of 5 stars Solid followup to Itse.......2003-08-24

Ajattara was founded in 1996, featuring members of Amorphis and Northern Discipline. 2001 saw their first release, Itse. It was an all-around solid black metal release, if a little generic. Nevertheless, the debut showed great potential for this rising band. 2003's Kuolema is the sophomore release for Ajattara. While Kuolema is on par with Itse, I am dissapointed that the band didn't attempt anything more adventurous.

Kuolema is very similar sounding to Itse - in verse/chorus form, saturated with synths, heavy guitars, and black metal rasps sung entirely in Finnish. All the songs on Kuolema are similar sounding, even more so than on Itse. Nevertheless, the album somehow manages to keep the listener's interest till the very end. This is partly due to the fact that the album is extremely consistant. There are no bad songs, no great songs, just equally good songs all the way through. My favorite song is the last track, Rauhassa, that is better than the rest by a hair. Rauhassa is the darkest song on the album, laced with a compelling melody. All in all, Kuolema is a very enjoyable listening experience.

There are a plethora of people that would enjoy this band and are missing out on them. Kuolema will appeal to fans of Dimmu Borgir and similar, as well as those who were dissapointed with the Kovenant's latest, the industrial-metal SETI. This is not to say that Ajattara sounds similar to the aformentioned bands, but rather that they're all on the poppier side of black metal. All are easily digestable and appealing, and the rewards of these bands come from first listen.

Would i recommend it? For fans of Dimmu Borgir and similar, Kuolema is worth full price. For all other fans of melodic metal, search the used bins for it.

Kuolema deserves 3, possible 3 1/2 stars. The album doesn't pack that extra punch that would merit a four star rating. More complex instrumentation, better songwriting, more lasting power - just one of these would earn Kuolema 4 stars. I hope to award that extra star to Ajattara next time. Should Ajattara stay on the same path, however, I won't be complaining. As of right now, Ajattara and Dimmu Borgir are the best pop-black metal acts out there.

And by the way amazon, its Ajattara, not Ajattra :)
