Bubblegum? Sez Who?.......2007-04-22
Lesley Gore had her first hit in 1963, at sixteen, with "It's My Party, and I'll Cry If I Want To." (The president of the studio where she'd been working had warned her not to be too disappointed if it wasn't released.) But "It's My Party" was a great big, instantaneous hit, being played on New York's WINS, WMCA, its most popular rock and roll radio stations, one short week after it was recorded/released, and hitting #1 on the national charts six short weeks later. It was quickly followed by "Judy's Turn to Cry," "That's The Way Boys Are," "She's a Fool," and "Maybe I Know." And, before you knew it, Gore was the biggest solo female hitmaker of the early 1960's. And, seemingly, she was chronicling a high school girl's angst. So a lot of people considered her music to be bubblegum. Nevertheless, she had, still has, a big, beautiful pure voice, with a lovely, soaring upper register, and a dynamic delivery. Just was lucky enough to catch her in person; she still has that great delivery.
And she was already an accomplished musician at 16; she was discovered, through several piano demos of hers that were circulating, by none other than celebrated jazz master Quincy Jones, who acted as her producer for the first several years of her career. So let me remind you, Quincy Jones is not generally considered a bubble gum kind of guy. For your further consideration, this collection includes the melodic "California Nights," and "Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows," from this early phase of her career; their intonation and phrasing are clean and crisp, almost jazzy. You'll also find "You Don't Own Me," collected here; generations of high school girls have had to grow into this one. The scope of her music, in fact, solidly illustrates the fact that Lesley Gore never was strictly a bubblegum chronicler of high school heartbreak: she always had more on her mind.
Sweet Innocence.......2005-10-02
Lesley Gore embodied the teen angst of growing up and navigating the turbulent waters of young love. She was hugely popular with girls and boys. She was either your friend or your girlfriend and everybody felt they knew her. Her wonderful songs captured an innocence that would soon be lost for the youth that adored her as Vietnam loomed like a dark cloud on the horizon.
I've had several of Lesley's albums over the years and almost everything that was great about her is here on this one. It is the perfect blend of bubblegum and teen sincerity. I pop Lesley in whenever I'm feeling a little nostalgic and it never let's me down. She was beach parties and surfers riding the big wave, going steady and having your heart broke for the first time. From the upbeat and melancholy to the sweet, this one covers it all.
Good music can come in a lot of forms, and this is definitely good music. It's easy to listen to and will leave you feeling better than you did when you put it on. How much music do you own you can say that about? We'll surely never see this blend of youth and innocence ever again, but it certainly is nice to know we can go back and remind ourselves what was great about the 60's.
You'll have difficulty finding anyone who doesn't like Lesley and you will also if this is your first listen to her. It's more than worth the purchase price for this much enjoyment. You don't want to miss this terrific music.
Still a "Gore"geous sound.......2005-09-08
Lesley's early 60s girl-group sound is showcased in this CD like the jewel it is. The vitality of songs such as "Look of Love" and hard-to-find "Summer and Sandy" bring us back to a fun, innocent, idyllic time and time and place we dreamed of during a turbulent decade. Rock on, Ms. G!
All the essential hits and most of the minor ones.......2004-09-28
Even in her American homeland, Lesley didn't have many hits. In Britain, she only had two hits (It's my party and Maybe I know) and only the first of them is famous. Nevertheless, compilations of her music continue to be released at regular intervals.
This particular compilation has all the essential hits, these being It's my party, Judy's turn to cry, She's a fool, Maybe I know, You don't own me, Sunshine lollipops and rainbows, Look of love and my personal favorite, California nights. Most of the other songs here were minor American hits -minor in terms of chart placement but major in quality. You know the way pop music goes - once singers are deemed unfashionable, radio schedulers ignore their music.
Selecting a compilation among a choice of several is normally a tricky business. With Lesley, it's simple - the cheapest is the worst and the most expensive is the best, with the prices of those in between reflecting their quality. So (for example), this compilation is superior to the 12-track 20th century Millenium compilation but not quite as strong as the 30-track compilation, Start the party again, which one of my friends has reviewed. The only way to improve on that is to go for the double-CD (Anthology, now apparently out of print) or the 5-CD boxed set, both of which I reviewed a long time ago.
With 18 tracks, this compilation is probably just right for most people seeking Lesley's hits of the sixties.
Pure Talent.......2000-12-05
This Lesley Gore collection really shows that even in her early teens, this girl could sing! Besides her choice of materials to record, all the arrangements are full and compliment Miss Lesley's voice and style. This collection reflects her hits but she was and is so much more then just the hits. Any recording by Lesley showcases a gifted and talented singer and a superb master of her voice. I feel that in today's market, she can show these new arrivals what it is all about. All they really have to do is listen and they will learn. I give this CD collection 5 stars!

Customer Reviews:
I love this cd!!.......2003-08-12
I love EJK's voice!! His soothing voice has really helped take my mind to somewhere far, far away. My only complaint is that, while I know that KoTruckin' and Boogie Down were his two biggest songs, I'd like to see some of his other tunes released. I think he made great songs, and if another compilation is put out, I'd like to see something other than what's on the Ultimate, Millenium, and Essential Collections. T Or Motown and Atlantic could just rerelease Eddie's albums onto cds...pretty please? Or heck, if you don't want to issue individuals, just do some type of boxed set.
A nice try, but...........2003-02-15
not quite there. Motown has STILL failed to present a collection of Eddie's music that is worthy of the talent this man possessed. With bits and pieces from various albums that were released during his Motown tenure, it attempts to cover some of the tracks missed on the ULTIMATE COLLECTION and AT HIS BEST. In fact, the second half of the CD entirely focuses on his excellent Philly Sound work. Motown didn't really want to promote this material (could it be admitting that, by the 1970s, the "Motown Sound" was dead??) and that's unfortunate, because many of the songs Eddie made in Philly that weren't released as singles could've been huge hits. But THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION still comes up short. There are better, more solid tracks that could have been used...the lengthy tunes "Body Talk" and "I've Got To Be" made it instead of "Each Day I Cry A Little", "Please Don't Go Away" and "Deep And Quiet Love"? Come on, now! However, a bright spot is the inclusion of the beautiful ballads "Just Memories" (1972) and "Honey Brown" (1974), which have been hard to find on CD for years.
Motown/Universal, let's stop the guessing what tracks we Eddie fans would like to have on a single CD, shall we? Just re-release ALL of his stuff on 2-fer CDs and we'll ALL be happy!
A Rare Find!.......2003-01-13
This shows Eddie's most versatile material. Many of these tracks you cannot find anymore (which is sad, considering that all of his albums were GREAT!) If you are a real fan, this is a must for your collection.

The classic "Hound Dog" is usually associated with Elvis Presley, but blues fans know: Presley's recording wasn't the first. That honor belongs to singer Big Mama Thornton, whose own recording of "Hound Dog" was eclipsed by Presley's. Her version is on this collection in all its glory, opening a CD of 17 killer tracks. Thornton's voice, by turns growling and richly melodic, was indeed unusual, and the spare accompaniment on Hound Dog makes it stand out all the more on songs such as "They Call Me Big Mama," "How Come," "The Big Change," "Hard Times," and "The Fish." Thornton had talent and attitude to spare, and both come through loud and clear on this essential collection. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Apples & Oranges.......2007-05-26
Why all the knockin' Elvis's version?? It sold millions and put the song on the rock & roll map. He was..is.. one of the great singers of all time.
Comparing Mama's version to Elvis's is like apples & oranges.
Mama is.. well.. great! You like her or you don't. She's got that early old time rock sound that we grew up on. Listen to her music and make up your own mind... she is one 'rockin' Mama.
just a great voice and great songs!.......2007-05-21
from the first second you put this record on it's amazing! what a woman this was!
Big Mama's Rockin' Bluesy Rhythm & Blues.......2007-01-11
Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was much more than the originator of "Hound Dog" - she was one of the greatest Blues singers. She could be fun and sassy, and could also be plaintive and emotional. After Bessie Smith and before Koko Taylor, there was Big Mama Thornton.
HOUND DOG: THE PEACOCK RECORDINGS consists of 18 songs recorded 1952-1957 on the Peacock label (note: track 8 on Duke), some previously unreleased on US album, one (track 15) previously unreleased in the US; songs are not in chronological order. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 47:15. Booklet includes a pedestrian essay by Mary Katherine Aldin, several black & white photographs (plus an image of a poster promoting a Big Mama performance), and detailed track information (songwriters, musician personnel, recording dates). Sound quality is excellent.
These are her early recordings, made after she started touring as a singer at age 14 (performing with - or against - "Little Esther" Phillips). She went on to record for Baytone, Kent, Mercury, Vanguard, and Arhoolie labels, where she would record "Wade in the Water" and "Ball N' Chain", the latter notably covered by Janis Joplin.
Most of these 50s recordings are made with the Johnny Otis Orchestra. "Yes, Baby" (track 8) is a duet with Johnny Ace. The music is not as much Blues as Rhythm & Blues and early Rock N' Roll. Most of the songs are up-tempo numbers.
I like this disc, but it is rather brief. I prefer "Ball `N' Chain", a collection of much Blues-ier 1960s recordings released on Arhoolie.
music: 2 stars
packaging: 3 stars
Best Ever.......2007-01-03
Big Mama is probably the best female blues vocalist ever. She can belt them out and swing at the same time. There is not a bad song in the bunch and the sound quality is as good as it is going to get for the era. If you don't own and Big Mama you have to get this.
Elvis is still the "King!".......2005-02-01
I will agree that "Big Mama's" version is good...But Elvis is still the "King." When I hear Elvis, I want to get up and move. His version may be an imitation, but it still kicks ass....Big Mama deserved more credit than she got...I mean the woman has soul and funk....Both versions should be appreciated for what they are- kick ass good music...But Elvis still rules in my book...

Full title - Afterglow - The Essential Collection 1971-1994. Daryl Braithwaite has been a part of Australian musical life for more than 30 years, his powerful, evocative, reassuring voice leaving its mark on the musical generations of the 70s, 80s & 90s. It was in 1971, when his distinctive (but rarely used since) falsetto sent Sherbet's 'Can You Feel It Baby?' into the Top 20, that his remarkable chart supremacy began. By the end of the decade Sherbet had notched up more than 20 hits (including the international hit 'Howzat') while eternal 'King of Pop' Daryl had notched up another half dozen as a solo entity. After three albums with the Sherbs, he soared back into huge profile during the late 80s, in the wake of John Farnham's similar renaissance, with the albums, Edge & Rise & a string of smash national hits. This unique multi-label, cross-era, 21-track single disc career overview package

A collection-item for Baywatch-fans !.......2004-10-13
Also for Baywatch-fans this CD from Daryl Braithwaite is a worth recommendation to their collection. The CD contains three smashing hits that were used for various Baywatch-episodes.
The song "As the days go by" was used for the episode "The sky is falling" (1989 / season 1). While hearing this "warm" song, you'll remember Captain Thorpe on lifeguard duty.
The second song, "The Horses", was used for the episode "Game of chance" (1991 / season 2). While hearing this song, you'll remember Shauni riding a horse on the beach.
The third song, "One summer", was used for the episode "Pier Pressure" (1992 / season 3). While hearing this song, you'll remember lifeguard Summer Quinn taking a hot summer beach patrol.
If you are interested in songs that featured on Baywatch, you can buy here on Amazon.com the Book: "Baywatch - Rescued from Prime Time". This book contains all credits from songs/artists (like Daryl Braithwaite), that you can buy here on Amazon.com
The soundquality of this CD is excellent.
Higly recommended because this Daryl Braithwaite represents the classical Baywatch-music.

cool collection.......2006-06-29
I really dug the arrangements that's behind this CD. It's Classic Material! Nice vibe, cool production, love the strings, and a kick outta the horns rite there. Everything is on this disc if u love it. I truly love "Masterpiece" which is 12-13 plus minutes long incl. the remake of "Trouble Man" (which is 15 or so minutes long here). Love it to death. That right there if whatcha wanna have. Grover Washington been know as the forefather or frontman of creating the smooth jazz genre which brought it back on top. He was such an inspiration to all future artists worldwide. I greatly miss him.
One of my All-Time Main Sax Pioneers and Musicians always on my Top List. "Lean on Me," "Inner City Blues," "Mercy Mercy Me", "Ain't No Sunshine,", all of that should be heard on this compilation. It's a treat.
