Better than the debut!.......2005-06-30
Wow! I bought this CD on a whim, and I have to say it is just as good, if not better, than the Dresden Dolls self-titled debut album.
This CD really captures the angst and emotion of Palmer's voice, and there are eight new songs on this CD. Eight! And the live versions of "Missed Me" and "Coin-Operated Boy" just sound better on this live disc.
If you can find this through a third-party seller on Amazon, buy it now! You will listen to it over and over in your car, if you're anything like me...
F is for "fair".......2005-05-19
Good things come to those who browse indie stores. It was by one such store that I found the Dresden Dolls' self-titled debut, a stormy mesh of twisted lyrics about everything from insanity to self-mutilations, raw punk music and cabaret kitsch.
And it was -- I found out -- only in such stores that I could find "A is for Accident," a collection of the Dolls' live performances from 2001 to 2003. The cabaret-punk music is exceptional, but the sound quality varies wildly from song to song.
A handful of these ten songs are also included in their album, such as the playfully strange "Coin-Operated Boy," the staccato piano of "Missed Me," and the expansive, slow-building "Truce," where Amanda Palmer sounds her dark best. But there are also several songs that were NOT on their debut, such as the ominous ballad "Mrs O," the aching yowls of "Glass Slipper," the slithery piano melody of "Thirty Whacks," and the kitschy glamour of "Bank of Boston Beauty Queen."
"A Is For Accident" is definitely a good listen for fans of the Dresden Dolls -- not only does it have live songs, but also several that otherwise can't be heard. Perhaps the Dolls will put them on another album, but as it stands, it's great to hear Amanda belting out those songs. And, sometimes, the applause.
She and co-musician Brian Viglione create smashing music. Literally. Palmer plays a toy piano, ripping over it and wringing raw music-box melodies out of it. Viglione adds the "punk" to punk-cabaret, with jagged drums that give this twisted music its furious edge. Together, they're absolutely brilliant. And Amanda's throaty voice gets to be funny, strange, dramatic and drama-queeny.
The problem? Well, while the songs are good, the sound quality is uneven. Some songs are so clear that they could have been recorded in a studio, but others sound distant and even muddy. "The Time Has Come" is a problem, for example, with Palmer trying to cope with rotten acoustics; at other times, you can barely hear what she's saying. (Not for lack of effort either)
The Dresden dolls are the most wonderfully twisted thing to ever come out of Boston, and "A is for Accident" is definitely worth having, despite the varying quality of the sound.
A brief review.......2005-05-17
This CD came out first in, I believe, 2003. Now it has been re-released, available at indie CD stores as well as at the band's web site. If you enjoy their eponymous release, then you should really enjoy this. It is a compilation of live shows spanning from 2001 - 2003. Only three, or so, songs are on the studio album. They have only been released on this CD (so far).
For a live CD, the sound quality is wonderful. If you're a fan of this band, this is something you must have! The music is as blissful as you would expect a Dresden Dolls CD to be. If you've never heard of the band, they've been dubbed with the category "Punk Cabaret", and until someone comes up with a better phrase, that is probably the best way to describe them. Good luck tracking down a copy of this wonderful music!

Accident of Birth.......2007-02-24
Remarkably unique, driving rock sounds! Although not as diverse or eerily soulful as Bruce Dickinson's later "Chemical Wedding," "Accident of Birth" clearly marks the defining moment in his "solo" career, where function (in the form of the exceptional Tribe of Gypsies and Adrian Smith) meld with his own characteristic presence. While incredibly distinctive, rock devotees will find themselves enthralled in the recognizable rhythms of a vast array of legendary rock "chops," including Roy "Z" Ramirez' interpretation of Santana's "Aztlan"; Adrian Smith's unique Rock/Soul combos; and Eddie Cassilas' "lead bass" drives wickedly on a plane with Steve Harris himself. A must have for any Rock or "Bruce" fan; or any rock history follower!
Montevideo.......2007-01-03
Definitely one of Bruce's better works. For those of you unfamiliar with his previous solo carreer, Bruce Dickinson had a topsy turvy time after leaving Iron Maiden in the early 90s to do his own thing, with varying results. Accident of Birth finds him back on form and was his springboard to rejoining Iron Maiden shortly after, a move which all Maiden fans rejoiced at. Bruce is a great liricist, something which is in evidence in this album, and it is worth it to actually listen to the lirics of his songs as well as the music. This CD is a particularly good buy, since it comes with extra tracks not included in the original release.
A Great Album and a Great 1989 - 1999 Maiden Alternative.......2006-11-05
A great album from Iron Maiden's former, and soon to be present, lead singer. Bruce left Maiden in the early 90's to pursue a solo career (but returned to Maiden in 1999, where he still is today), and this album is one of the best he put out. It is definitely better than anything Iron Maiden put out between Seventh Son (1988) and A Matter of Life and Death (2006). If you're a Maiden or a metal fan, buy this album and you won't be disappointed. The album was cowritten by Bruce and guitarist/producer Roy Z and guitarist and Maiden bandmate Adrian Smith. Roy Z and Smith deliver the guitar goods, Bruce's voice is in top form, and together they deliver one great song after another. For me, this album is tied with Tyranny of Souls for Bruce's best solo album. Also check out The Chemical Wedding, which is excellent as well. All three are far better IMO than the Maiden's Fear of the Dark, No Prayer for the Dying, the Blaze-era Maiden, an arguably better than Maiden's Brave New World and Dance of Death. This version contains additional liner notes as well as a second CD containing one bonus track as well as demos of some of the songs, and various versions of the haunting Man of Sorrows.
Inner Art.......2006-08-18
Like Iron Maiden never existed, Bruce Dickinson on this album presents himself as a genuine musician and a composer with style and sense for our epoch.
Solid Solo Release.......2006-08-02
'Accident of Birth' isn't nearly as good as Dickinson's next album, 'Chemical Wedding', would be, but it's still a very solid, classic metal album. Nothing new, perhaps, but they do what they do well.
One of 'Accident of Birth's bigger problems is the crappy production. It's clear, plenty clear, but it just doesn't have much punch, so the rockers don't hit as hard as they should. You've certainly heard worse, but considering who recorded this and when, it really should be better.
Dickinson's work here is indeed fairly reminiscent of the old IM material, but he still finds a fairly distinct voice, cutting down on the dual harmonies a lot and severely downplaying the importance of the bass guitar. Thus, the album doesn't have the sorta killer instrumental breaks you find on pretty much all the IM albums, but the core songs are almost universally solid. Furthermore, Dickinson's vocals are as good as ever, and he's allowed a bit more range here, with some straight up ballads. (Rather than power-ballads.)
The album opens with 'Freak', a solid, catchy rocker, if not an altogether remarkable song which is followed by 'Starchildren' a slighly better, more epic track. The album really comes alive with 'Darkside of Aquarius'. Great, unforgettable vox in the first half and the final section has just got an awesome stomping groove, kinda the IM gallop slowed down to half speed. Strangely enough, 'Accident of Birth' actually gets better as it goes along, with the final 6 songs all being particularly strong. 'Man of Sorrows' is a terrific, brooding ballad which is followed by the title track, and very dark, nasty song with another great groove. 'The Magician' is a poppy, fun and energetic track which is paired with 'Welcome to the Pit', a very moody song, but with an instantly memorable, soaring chorus. The album closes with 2 consecutive ballads, both very good, though the closer, 'Arc of Space' is the better of the two. It's just a sparse, beautiful track with strings and acoustic guitars which is even moving in spite of the bizarre subject matter. Definitely a good way to got out.
Anyway, 'Accident of Birth' is unquestionably worthwhile for any Dickinson or Maiden fan. It's got a couple weaker tracks and doesn't entirely hit its stride until the midway point, but it's still a very good album all around.

If Michael Penn sometimes can't seem to decide which of his musical talents (singer-songwriter, musician-arranger, perspective-minded producer) to focus on, it's a dilemma that's produced a compelling slice-of-résumé here. And though his pop sensibility is sometimes reminiscent of Matthew Sweet and other history-conscious peers, there's a reserve to Penn's productions that subtly underscores lyrics as sharp of tongue as they are of eye. Typically bleak, if playfully so ("I got loaded in a hearse when all I needed was a nurse," he observes on "Lucky One"), the singer can't help but lay the truth on you even while he's busy concocting just the right musical cocktail to help wash it down. This is Penn's sometimes bleak world-view, be it personal or objective, set to dry productions that can still somehow recall Spector one instant, mournful Delta blues the next, crucially without being slave to either. Cheer up, Penn seems to be advising here, the news may be bad, but the music doesn't have to be. -Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Business as usual for the Bard of L.A........2006-01-21
While the influence of Michael Penn's many side projects make themselves heard on this effort, the musical evolution was laid out in the road map of Resigned, not to mention previous collaborations with Patrick Warren. Face it, Penn has always had a flare for mixing genre (what great musician doesn't?), so there's little need to quibble over Penn's perceived branching out when it comes to the production values of his current records.
Lyrically speaking, MP4 is business as usual for the heir apparent to Dylan. If you like clever wordplay and haunting metaphors, then Penn's the guy for you. True, things rarely get sunny in Michael's world, but hey, that's what happens when sensitivity allows such vision. The bleakness of his worldview may weary listeners, but it is sold in the most eloquent terms, and that's what keeps us coming back for more.
Watered down and bland.......2005-07-31
Where's the hooks?
Michael Penn is a gifted songwriter/musician and this album is the low point of his career.
It has an VH1 mediocrity to it.
There's two good songs on the album.
Thankfully Michael rebounds with his superior 2005 album, "Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947".
Looking for the Fifth Star.......2002-08-30
This is Michael Penn's best recording to date. His literacy and pop sensibility is one of the best today. No comparisons, he is himself. He should be congratulated for being a true independent in music. Aimee Mann is his match.
Four stars for deficiencies I won't go into here.
I just hope he can find the Good News and get out of the cultural downer where his music tends to go. Although, sometimes his songs just tell it in a way that only a great talent can - Lucky One is both funny and serious at the cusp of the Millennium; High Time is truly mature, time to grow up; and Perfect Candidate is unfortunately too true. He can spot the Ship of Fools.
This is a genius still on his way.
MP4 displays high levels of brilliance........2002-03-24
Michael Penn's 4th album, "MP4: Days...," is absolutely amazing. Although not as amazing as the fact that not many people are aware of Michael Penn's musical prowess (or presence). His voice and lyrics combine to create a musical style comprable to Lennon and McCartney. The first track, "Lucky One," showcases Penn's range as a writer and musician. However, the gem of the CD comes in the form of track No. 7, "Don't Let Me Go." A song that takes you deep into the mind and heart of the performer. Absolutely stunning and I have to say, my best music purchase of the past few years.
A step back.......2002-01-13
Penn retreads some of his lesser work on _March_ on MP4, and it just doesn't work. "Whole Truth" and "Don't Let Me Go" are beautiful, but "Perfect Candidate", "Beautiful", and "Bucket Brigade" are just sloppy and uninspired. Time to return to the pared-down brilliance of _Free-For-All_, methinks.

Customer Reviews:
As an AOL fan, I was disappointed.......2002-06-14
I love AOL more than any other band (I gave all their studio albums 5 stars), but I was highly disappointed by this live release. However, it is very indicative of their final tour. They seemed to be losing all their passion for the music, and on most songs sound very dull. I went to their show in Philadelphia during this tour and loved the live version of "Fashion Bleeds", but on this album (with Eric Johnson replaced by the guy from Man or Astroman) it just sounded really bad. The same goes for nearly every song on this disc. They are still great songs, but it seems like they just didn't care any more.
archers kings of indie rock.......2001-06-10
this brilliant peice is the first archers CD I bought and I love it,the inteligent lyrics and tunes continue to thrill me.from the groovy opening dead red eyes to gorgeous chumming the oceans this excellent live album never dissapionts.i noticed that some reviewers seemed dissapionted which is why i felt i needed to write this review because this is the best live album you'll hear from the chapel hill rockers so buy this,BUY THIS!a great introduction to one of my favourite bands.
Super chunky slanted dienchantment.......2000-07-09
Think of this CD as a tuneful keepsake from one of the brightest musical lights of the indie '90s.
the end?.......2000-06-27
Seems like many critics review albums that they either love or hate. Can't say that about this one. Its good, but seldom reflects the true raw power the Archers are capable of. I never understood comparisons to Pavement. Archers rock while Pavement merely meanders and haven't made a decent record since 1991's Slanted and Enchanted. In short, Archers blow Pavement away.
Highlights on this live record are "Let the Loser Melt", "Lowest Part is Free" and the delicate "Chumming the Oceans." I hope we hear more from Archers because I was intrigued by their ever changing direction. Bands that stay stagnant deserve to die slow, painful deaths. That was never these guys. Sure was sweet to hear Eric B's splintered howl once again.
true colours...........2000-06-23
Everything about this CD is bittersweet. The moment I pulled this from the rack, 8 years of loyal decdication came to a head. I didn't have any expectations, I wasn't going to try to compare it to the likes of Icky, GOAT, Cattle, or Vee Vee, and I was going to enjoy it on the same level as I had enjoyed the 5 Archers shows I had attended. I know, I know...I have just made my bias blatently obvious; however, I am reviewing the content of this album not my love of the band.
The sound quality is excellent with my only objection being Mark Price's snare drum on some fast/loud tracks sounding like a plastic bucket (reminiscent to the Vee Vee recording) but I guess it depends on your stereo quality too. There's not nearly enough audience noise that would help project that live feel. They should have learned to use more screaming fans as they did in Vitus Tinnitus. The only other flaw is the poor mix between songs. One of the most appealing qualities of a AOL live show is the banter between songs. There is banter, but it's often cut off abruptly.
The songs: I couldn't have assembled a better palette. Songs spanning their entire career are included and with some surprises (eg. "You and Me"). All of the songs are well done and display the true energy of each piece. The listener can really get a feel for what excellent musicians and song writers these four guys were (and still are, in a side project sense). Some tracks are much better live then their album counter parts. For example, "White Trash Heros" is magnificant live, whereas on the album it sounds as if it's the product of a few tweeked knobs and some pushed buttons. The same can be said for "Chumming the Oceans" which has so much emotion live. For those of you looking for adreneline in hard rock form need only to listen to "Vocal Shrapnel", "Fabricoh", "Let the Loser Melt", "Wrong", and on and on... Lastly, the packaging (Luke, how vain can you possibly be?). This is just a sour note on my part. This album had been pushed back significantly, and I can say for certain that it wasn't for sake of the packing and art work. There is nothing visually gratifying about this album, no crazy liner notes, and it comes over as if the Alias staff used their days lunch money to put it together. They even printed the band and album name on the spine of the CD upside down, and I really hate when that happens.
Overall, this live album exposes the true ability and energy of the band. It's all songs that you have heard before (maybe) played live, in front of an audience, without any do-overs or overdubs. It's great to listen to as you're getting ready to go out and party. If you have an affinity for live albums, then this is great. If you are an Archers fan, it's a must have. Most importantly, it's a mix tape for all of you who want an introduction to the band. GET IT....Thank you.

Bloated -- could have been 20 minutes long.......2006-06-13
Someone told me I would like this record, so I borrowed it and gave it a listen... The prog rock influence is pretty obvious, but there are plenty of prog rock bands out there, and a lot of them are better than these guys.
The problem with this record is that it is too long and, much like a hot dog, has very little meat and a lot of filler.
I liked the first 5 minutes or so, then it lost me on a repetitive acoustic guitar hootenanny. There are about 20 minutes of really great music on a CD that is about 70+ minutes long.
These guys are like prog rock that "jams econo". No mellotrons or fat analog synths. It's prog rock played indie style. This just does not work for me.
I'm really surprised Steve Albini recorded this. It doesn't sound as good as what usually comes out of his studio. Then again, garbage in, garbage out... If you record bad sounding instruments, they will sound bad no matter who records it. It sounds like it was dubbed on some lossy digital device. You can definately hear digital compression artifacts when listening on monitors.
I too long for the days of the 70's, but not many of today's artists are up to snuff. One main reason is that no one will appreciate the hard work, and it definately doesn't pay off. But excuses don't make for good music. I'd much rather beef up my collection of great, original 70's progressive rock than hear an above-average attempt to expand on this sound.
20 minutes of this record are really amazing. The rest is boring. The problem is, the 20 minutes are spread across multiple tracks. So you can't just skip the wonder bread. You have to eat the whole sandwich.
It's ok. .......2004-08-07
Yeah Right...
i don't like this.
Phenomenological Masterpiece!.......2003-10-28
This is the best Cheer-Accident album, and one of the best albums I've ever heard! It's really hard to say what "genre" of music this is. It's really hard to describe how this sounds. All I can say is I've had it for a weekend, and listened to it 20 times. This is an album you can listen to over and over and always pick up something new that you didn't hear. It's overwhelmingly complex but the complexity is well done... Not a bunch of parts strung together, but a fluid masterpiece! If you're a Cheer-Accident fan, you will love this. If you've never heard the band, this is where to start. If you (for whatever incomprehensible reason) don't like Cheer-Accident, try this one... This is not only my favorite Cheer-Accident album, but one of my all time favorite albums EVER! 5 stars is not enough!
A Precise, Diverse Masterpiece.......2003-10-01
The album starts with a stuttering and precise progression that seems to be forming a lopsided musical ellipse, before it devolves into a droned coda of alternating horns, guitars, and buzzes. The coda is abbreviated by a movement of pounding atonal riff rock, which evolves with alacrity into a memorable melodic lilt that could serve as background music in a triumph-of-the-human-spirit film. All this occurs by the sixth minute of INTRODUCING LEMON's twenty-plus minute opener, "The Autumn Wind is a Pirate."
By this point in the album, one is on notice that this is not a typical album. Cheer-Accident is known (by those who know them) for their ability to play complex and varied progressive music, ranging in style from pop-ish to metal-ish to experimental-ish to just plain weird-ish. INTRODUCING LEMON is probably more complex and varied in and of itself than any other album the band has released. The album is a well-planned effort in terms of composition and sound documentation, and the appreciative listener will be rewarded abundantly. By way of description . . .
"The Day I Never Met You" begins with a memorable progressive pop hook accompanied by well-delivered vocals before disappearing into a sea of sparse but bold reverberated piano, which falls back into an patient full-on rock mantra. The track ends after three well-defined movements and flows into the similarly thematic instrumental effort "(The) Men's Wide Open." Thus flows INTRODUCING LEMON, which feels like a grand symphony comprised of six mini-symphonies plus a few musical vignettes (e.g., the bizarre subtle electro-pop ditty, "Camp O' Physique").
Indeed, several of the songs are quasi-classical in structure, if not sound. In an extreme variation of a form utilized on 2000's SALAD DAYS, INTRODUCING LEMON is bookended by contemplative epics that double as the strongest tracks on the album. "Find" closes the show with progressive grandeur: catchy (downright poppy) in the early stage, slow and gradual in the middle, all the while building to one last jagged and conclusive groove meant to puzzle (and amaze?) till the bitter end.
INTRODUCING LEMON will secure the band's legacy in all regards, and one can only hope that this gem will aid the band in receiving their due regard from both the music media of the present and the music historians of the future. Always interesting and never imitable, Cheer-Accident have produced their first masterpiece since 1997's ENDURING THE AMERICAN DREAM. If you give this one a chance, you will not be disappointed.

"Elmer Bernstein conducts film scores of Bernard Herrmann".......2004-10-28
Milan Records presents Elmer Bernstein conducting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with this digitally remastered "Bernard Herrmann Film Scores ", from "CITIZEN KANE" [1942], "THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER" [1942], "THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH" [1956], "PSYCHO" [1959], "THE WRONG MAN" [1957], "VERTIGO" [1958], "NORTH BY NORTHWEST" [1959], "THE BRIDE WORE BLACK" [1967], "FAHRENHEIT 451" [1966], "TAXI DRIVER" [1973]...and the final track is "BERNARD HERRMANN ON FILM MUSIC" [recorded early 1970s]...which clearly states why music is an additional character to any film, without it the film would be incomplete...during the silent film era, the piano player kept the audience tuned into what was happening, whether it was a love scene or danger lurking around every corner.
Herrmann completely mesmerizes us with his themes, blending variations with eloquent and subtle cues...depicting each character in the film, and fine tuned to the story-line ~ he was a genius and knew his craft well...relies heavily on strings, usually with lyrical solos for the winds...absolute in capturing the essence of each scene, musically letting the audience in through his score ~ the result is colors come shining through with wonderful arrangements...many of the classic film scores have become cult favorites among "film-score-buffs" like me and collectors alike.
Each film score is superb and very strong...the balance of the instruments and experimental touches of Bernard Herrmann are all just brilliant ~ working with directors like Welles, Dieterle, Hitchcock, Truffaut and Scorsese all were very conscious of classic film music and and Herrmann's cues really came through...each outing was nothing less than a bravo performance...those who ignored Herrmann during his career, really missed out...cause all the diehard collectors of film music knew he was a WINNER! ~ Bernard Herrmann [1911-1975].

Album Description
Made up of ex-members of POD, Sprung Monkey, and Grammatrain, these guys prove they're more than your average hard rock radio band. Dubbed by fans as AeX, the group started out touring with the likes of Foo Fighters, Korn, Damage Plan, Drowning Pool, Sevendust, Cypress Hill, Staind, Blur, and Body Count. Metal Edge Magazine named them one of the Twenty Bands To Watch, and MTV News featured the group twice, describing them as "eclectic and musically adventurous". With elements reminiscent of the dark beauty of Black Sabbath, the epic complexity of Rush, the artistic muscle of early Soundgarden, and the flamboyant yet aggressive experimentation of Led Zeppelin, AeX sound more like a natural progression of such legendary hard rock than most of today's over-hyped and generic formula music.

Alas, Aex is born.......2006-07-21
I gota say when I heard PODs earlier albums I always wondered what they would sound like with good singing instead of rapping(no disrespect to sonny). After the falling out between Marcos and HIS band POD, Aex was born, and I rejoiced. It features two things i love more than anything besides alcohol, great vocals and guitars at the same time in one nice little package. The opening song Sick love letter was an absolute masterpiece. The dynamics were just so perfect that i nearly bought ten more Aex CDs just for the hell of it. It also has hints of Tool(an obvious influence) in it. Holy magic man is also another song which really stuck out for me. The greatest thing about the album is you dont have the same sounding songs throughout the entire CD like bands such as Blink 182 or Good Charlotte(allow me to puke). This of course came as no suprise since it is a Marcos Curiel Project. The only reason i gave it 4 stars is because with their potential I thought they could have made at least 2 more of the songs a little more noteworthy. Other than that, keep an eye on these guys and buy the CD. Do it now!
Read me: In the near future - big things..........2006-07-03
You heard it from a Dick first: The Accident Experiment will be the Metallica of the 21st Century. By the time 2008 runs to a close, these guys will be HUGE in the genre of heavy music.
I'd say believe me or not, and rate this review if it was helpful, but the truth is, no one will read this for at least a year, or until these guys gain some momentum and all the kiddies look back at their back catolog.
Even if my prediction doesn't hold true, you know these guys will become as big as POD did. It'll start as underground, great music with stellar guitar creativity, like POD did with Brown, and POD LIVE, etc. and build from there. Face it. Mr. Curiel's playing is just TOO GOOD to ignore (even if it is a dissapointment that his new band doesn't have as positive and spiritual of a messsage).
Peace out, viewers of the future!
Nothing to fear about this impressive debut........2006-05-18
The names Pete Stewart and Marcos may mean nothing to you but they soon will. Both have an interesting history in the music industry and this project is the result of many frustrations and limitations they've faced along the way. You can hear it all in the lyrics and the scope of the record. It's definetly ambitious and this a good thing or a bad thing depending on your tastes. The album starts and ends on some pretty memorable moments, Mind Death Machine being the stand out track, but the middle is kind of where things start to get muddled. Songs like "Holy magic man" is just a collection of tired anti-conformist themes that every band seems to be sporting these days and the bland barre chords don't back it up enough to make it an interesting track.
The drumming is esquisite and the guitar works seems to repeat itself every now and than, the picking by Marcos is nice but a few variations every now and than wouldn't hurt. The band mixes the aura of Tool with the harsher relm of Sound Garden to create a sound that still needs more refinement and consistency. The mellow songs are a great break in between harder tracks but than those too begin to sound just like the others. It was sad to see "For You" not make it onto this album since it was hands down the best song on the "Arena" EP.
Pete Stewart brings back the alternative/grunge type of lead singer instead of all these little high whiney singers of the emo age. It's gritty, loud, and can shake your ear drums till they pop. The lyrics range from contrived to mind shattering. Just like the music it just feels that Pete needs to find his niche and than just sharpen it to a fine point. He criticizes religion and touches on all sorts of ambiguous subject matters. What tries to be meaningful sometimes comes off as too vague to really register with the listener. But he often succeeds more than he fails especially when he sings to a far off love in "So Far Away" or when he's taking down the establishment in "Mind Death Machine."
If I had to sum up this band in one word it would be, Potential, because they are soaked in it. They need to take the best moments from this record and step it up to stand out and truly break the mold. They definetly have the guts to do something different and they need to remove the "new-metal" crutches and let the alternative rock fly. I was very satisfied with this record and they are definetly a band to keep an eye on. You don't know them now, but you soon will.
Beyond Expectations........2006-05-18
When Marcos Curiel was kicked out of the guitarist slot in P.O.D. by his bandmates for not being Christian enough, I just knew he would come back with something to blow them away. The Accident Experiment and their debut, "United We Fear" has been nearly four years in the making. Aside from releasing their first EP, "Arena" for free on their website, there's been a lot of dead air for a while. The silence has finally ended, as The Accident Experiment have finally made their way onto the scene, with a stunning debut album under them to help turn more than a few heads.
I'd hate to focus on Marcos too much, but I've always said he is what gave P.O.D. their signature sound. His guitar style is instantly recognizable, and his riffs are huge. As the producer, he once again defines the sound of the band with The Accident Experiment. Of course, it helps if you have a great vocalist by your side, and Pete Stewart is one hell of a singer. He definitely fits in with the Maynard James Keenan soundalikes, but still has a style all his own. Songs like "Inside," "Slowdown" and "Tonight" truly belong to him, even if his vocals are sometimes buried by Marcos guitarplay (which happens more often than not). However, it is an instrumental track by the name of "AeX-1" that truly shows off the band. This one song shows both the heavy and the trippy side of the band. A band that takes nu-metal, stoner rock and grunge and rolls them all into one.
"United We Fear," from front to back, is as perfect and complete as could be. There are songs here that are simple and quick and too the point, and there are songs that take a bit more listening and definitely push the boundaries. There is a balance here that the band successfully maintains. They could be huge if they wanted to, and the music would still remain interesting. After listening to this CD, try putting in a P.O.D. CD and see how it sounds now. Marcos has finally unveiled his masterpiece. The Accident Experiment are truly an original, which is hard to come by these days.
Must have hard rock album.......2006-05-11
This is an amazing band. Pete Stewart is a truly gifted singer, and Marcus on guitar is awesome. I have loved Pete Stewart ever since his days with Grammatrain, and now that he has gone another direction his music has gotten even better. It's by no means what today's "traditional" hard rock is, and that is what makes them so good. Sick Love Letter is probably my favorite song right now, and this band is not going to go away. In years to come you will be hearing a lot about The Accident Experiment, so go check them out, you won't be dissapointed.

Product Description
In September of '94 Cheer-Accident shocked the avant-rock community by releasing a CD consisting entirely of concise, well-crafted, and highly tuneful songs. Initially greeted with much skepticism and more than a few raised eyebrows, "The Why Album" has since become arguably the band's most beloved record. Now, exactly twelve years later (to the day!), they have one-upped their previous foray into The World Of Pop by unleashing eleven brand-new miraculaously melodic and highly hummable ditties. Although the aptly-named "What Sequel?" once again finds Cheer-Accident rubbing elbows with the mainstream, fans of their more challenging music will have plenty to feast upon, too, as every single one of these songs is jam-packed with brain-enhancing twists and turns, virtually overflowing with stimulating songs. As is their way, they have made incredible use of Chicago's fertal rock, jazz and experimental community by employing a multitude of instruments, including trombone, flute, violin, trumpet, sax, piano, accordion and many others. Right alongside the more "off the beaten path" instruments, one can usually here the trademark Cheer-Accident rock sound via the solid foundation of guitars, bass and drums. In other words, it always rocks and it always grooves-- but there's always a little "something extra" for your brain to chew on while your toe is tapping. And who did they find to record and mix this delicious aural concoction, now know as "What Sequel?" Well... (And perhaps this was the most noteworthy utilization of the riches Chicago has to offer...) This task was taken on by none other than the great John McEntire (Tortoise, Sea And Cake) at his very own Soma studio. All in all, this is undoubtedly Cheer-Accident's most successful intersection of musical ideas to date: They have channeled their many years of experience with boundary-pushing and experimentation into a unique synthesis which just so happened to result in a pop masterpiece.

Decent record, but better stuff in this same vein..........2007-05-23
This and its predecessor (The Why Album) are decent records. They are progressive pop records. I think the editor's review about "The Why Album" shocking the Chicago avant-rock community is probably true since most of those folks are highly allergic to melodies. It is intentional -- a feat of indie-rock irony (See, we are this crazy avant-rock band, but we do pop too. Get it?). And like too many Chicago indie bands, these guys think they are really great and surround themselves with a revolving cast of the same people in an inbred music scene. The prog-clichés are too obvious for them to be great, unless you are unfamiliar with the genre (and yes, they are completely classifiable). People who hold this band in high acclaim are often clueless about other bands out there that are much better, and just as unknown and of an "underdog" status.
The vocals are the weakness of this band. This is the case with most independent rock. Unfortunately, pop music demands brilliant vocals, and Cheer-Accident deliver something that is above average. Compared to U.S. Maple, Slint or Shellac, the vocals are absolutely pristine and they are like the three freakin' tenors. They are the big fish in a small pond of fish that cannot sing to save their lives... So the singing seems impressive when you put it into the perspective of their peers' work.
This recording is worth owning, but maybe half as good as something like Echolyn's "Suffocating the Bloom". Ugh, there are scads of bands that do this progressive pop thing so much better -- more sincere, more beautiful, and much more intricate.
One thing I don't like is the indie rock sense of irony that comes across as a bit sarcastic. This is a big reason I do not listen to independent rock anymore. I grew tired of the ironic fashion and attitude (I'm a cool rock dude, but I dress up like a nerd, isn't it ironic? No, it's tired... So 1994.).
Many people like Cheer-Accident for their avant-rock or math rock sound -- a sound that is abrasive and obtuse. It is my impression (listening to their records and seeing them live) that their forays into pop or melodic music are indicative of the sarcastic irony typical of indie rock bands. "Whoa, we just played this crazy metal-ish song, and now we're covering a Carpenters song in a Musak style". While a sense of humor is a good thing, I think they take it a bit too far, and it is very insincere. This is just my impression, and I could be wrong. I feel there is a lot of indie-rock irony here that is just so tired and played out nowadays. Maybe 10 years ago, I would find it amusing. Nowadays, this can only be amusing to neophyte Death Cab and Modest Mouse fans.
In sum, it's a good record, and worth owning... Maybe half as good as something Echolyn would do, and there is so much more sincerity and beauty in what they do. "What Sequel" is something I can listen to several times, but not something I will dig out years from now and be thrilled with.
Feel free to disregard my criticism of their ironic ways. It is a new pet peeve of mine, mainly because there are quite a few bands out there that have a similar sound without the cheesy irony. Secondarily because this "irony" is a fad that was cool 10 years ago. Cheer-Accident are well known for their pranks and gags, and sometimes you just want to hear some music from people who are straight-shooters and highly creative. They are a great band and "What Sequel" is a very good album, but to put it in the proper perspective demands a rating of no more than three stars. There is just too much material in this same vein that is simply better.

Album Description
Not A Food is the fifth full length release by Cheer-Accident and their first on Pravda Records. Produced by noted Chicago producer Steve Albini, the result is a tight and relentless sonic attack with traces of melancholia and dementia. Cheer-Accident remains one of Chicago's most challenging and interesting bands as dense and dissonant guitars intertwine with grinding drums, bass grooves, noise segments, rythmic patterns and melody. A truly adventurous release by a vital band.
Customer Reviews:
Helmet did this sound years before, and did it better.......2006-06-13
I'm not quite sure what all the hubub is about this record. This sounds like what Helmet was doing in the late 80's, without the boring forays into "experimental" music. I guess if you haven't heard John Cage, this is pretty "experimental". I guess the "experiment" has been occuring for 70 years now? I guess the hypothesis that the "experiment" is trying to prove is how much trash does it take to bore me?
I just started listening to this band. A friend who knows I like progrock tried to turn me on to them. From what I can tell, they have about 30% interesting music, and 70% filler. They like to use repetition as some sort of artistic statement, but it is an easy way to stretch out a few good ideas. Only art phonies will go for this. Where's the beef? Oh, it's on Henry Cow records.
Comparisons to King Crimson are applicable. They also tend to have a ratio of great:mediocre that is 3:7. Another band that built a career on gimmicks. Cheer-Accident are not able to build a career with this approach.
I heard they are great live, but someone gave me recording of a show they did in St. Louis, and it was pretty much what they play on their records, just rearranged because they can't do overdubs live. It also featured a pathetic attempt to fill up show time with some spoken word performance piece that wasn't funny or cute. Just boring.
Do yourself a favor and get Helmet's "Strap It On", "Meantime", or "Betty" if you want some chunky arrhythmic proggy metal. I can see the point of not having a sound. That's cool. But deviating from math rock into pretentious art-boredome is just wankery. I rarely write this, but you can find better work on major labels. This record is like 1988-era music released in 1996. I don't get it... It's like everyone has heard Helmet.
Simple genius.......2000-03-24
Cheer-Accident is a phenomenal ensemble. NOT A FOOD provides a glimpse into the mindset of the band, though the album is not a fair representation of the myriad modes employed throughout their entire body of work. The album is probably best characterized as progressive math-rock metal. While this is a fair characterization, it is not a complete one. For those interested in hearing the band and having a primary preference for post-hardcore math-rock music, this is probably as good a place to start as any. For those having primary prog, pop, or avant-garde preferences, I recommend BABIES SHOULDN'T SMOKE, THE WHY ALBUM, and ENDURING THE AMERICAN DREAM, respectively.

the keys... that was an amazing time. No, it was great. It was more great than amazing. That was great. Does anybody remember me holding up a set of keys like this and saying does anybody remember me holding up a set of keys like this? No, just got one I'm fine. I'm trying to get people to remember these keys that I was holding up. Does anybody remember Jangles? Someone remembers. Hey where did you remember me doing it? Cause I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I've done it a few times now...I said does anybody remember me holding up a set of keys like this.
