When it comes to being a skinny, big-smiling teen-ager who can whip pop music fans into a frenzy with a mere toss of his excellent curls, let's face it: Corbin Bleu has competition. If Bleu is not the only TV-launched singer to revitalize both leave-in conditioner sales and puppy love in 2007, though, he is the only one with a shot at being taken seriously by critics. Another Side, his first album post-High School Musical and Jump In!, the Disney Channel movies that made a household name out of him (at least in households inhabited by 8- to 15-year-olds), is pretty much what you'd expect--a high-energy hybrid of pop, R&B, and hip-hop. Consider "Push It to the Limit," the song that propelled the Jump In! soundtrack and closes this disc, an on-ramp to the bubbly Bleu sound. Don't discount what separates him from the pack of post-Disney Channel singers wishing upon stars for pop-chart domination, though. His vocals, a pleasing mash of Michael Jackson and Jesse McCartney, make him a contender for a long-term career in music. --Tammy La Gorce

His album might not be the best. But...he is a really nice person. And I love "Marchin'", also "P.I.T.T.L.", and "Deal With It". His album could have used some more work, but whatever. I would have the album if someone gave it to me for free, I dont think I would ever buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it.......2007-06-07

If you love High School Musical you would need to get this album. I love the deut with him and Vanessa it is such a beautiful song. Its worth buying because of that song. There's also "Push It To The Limit".

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, totally cool!.......2007-06-02

Corbin's CD is awesome! There are the slower songs for relaxing, and the energetic songs that you can't help but dance to, like "We come to Party", one of my favorites. Many have pointed out that he has a high pitched voice. Yes, he does, in some parts, but there's nothing wrong with that! And maybe some say it's unoriginal, but it's kinda hard to be totally original with the trillions of sogs that are out there.
This CD is amazing with something for everyone. It's definitley a good buy!

What is there left to say about this musical, deservedly one of the most famous in the canon? Created by what lyricist Stephen Sondheim described as "a unique concatenation of people" (Leonard Bernstein, Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins), the show remains as explosively vibrant, daring, and modern as it was decades ago. Bernstein integrated Latin percussion and jazz into his electrifying score, dazzlingly translating New York's unique vitality into a musical idiom. West Side Story has been adapted for jazz and interpreted by pop and opera singers, but you owe it to yourself to check out the original version to see what the fuss was all about. This new reissue adds over 20 minutes of "symphonic dances" as well as liner notes and production photos. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

It is like reviewing the bible. West Side Story is so fundemental to modern musical theater that it stands on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-04-01

I saw West Side Story on Broadway with this cast. It was wonderful to revisit this exceptional play and brilliant score. I always felt that the movie was schlock compared to the original play. I recommend this to anyone and everyone who loves beautiful music performed by exceptionally talented performers

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Music!.......2007-03-18

I'm in love with this OBCR, and for good reason. It's West Side Story! How could you not love it?

But, for a more realistc review, this is an amazing cast recording. If you just take into consideration how long ago this was (50 years) and think about how far it's come, how much this musical has impacted the world, you already have an idea of how amazing this how must have beem. Beyond that, the orchestrations are beautiful, the performances wonderful and Mr. Sondheim's lyrics will make your breath catch in your throat.

What more could you want in a musical?

5 out of 5 stars Best version of the best Musical.......2007-03-03

I first heard the original Broadway cast album of West Side Story when I was 8 years old. Since then I have heard the album from the motion picture and the album recorded with opera stars including Kiri Te Kanawa. Although the latter two are excellent efforts, I think (and always will) that the original Broadway cast album with Carol Lawrence and Larry Kern is the definitive treatment. The energy, freshness, enthusiasm and feeling are at once captivating, exciting and uplifting. The sense of character and atmosphere is incomparable. It is possibly a help that this album was recorded at the time when the reality of New York and its demographics (including the street gangs) portrayed in the work was still fresh and relevant. I could rattle on for ages about this wonderful work but I will spare the patient reader. All I can say is, if you love this wonderful piece of art and don't possess this version, do yourself the biggest of favours and buy it. Listen to it again and again and let it work its magic on you. You won't regret it! Olé!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD!!!!!!.......2007-01-16

The high pitched click on the 12/13 second mark that was mentioned in a previous review is, I believe, just the sound of Riff and Bernardo pulling out their knives. As for any confusion about the difference in song order and lyric changes for those used to the movie, in the Broadway play the song "Cool" was sung before the war council and the song "Gee, Officer Krupke" was sung after the Rumble. In the movie they switched these two songs. (Appropriately, I think.) In the movie they also changed where the song "I Feel Pretty" was. Which is why the lyrics changed from: "I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight!" to the words "gay" (meaning happy of course) and "day". In the movie some changes (mostly slight ones) were made to the lyrics in most of the songs. Bernardo and the Sharks were also added to the song "America". The "Somewhere Ballet" was not done in the movie due to the budget and time. If you are used to the movie version the Broadway version might seem a bit odd. Overall it is a wonderful CD with lovely singing, and music.

Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars VERY switched on and total joy!.......2007-04-27

I was thrilled to see how many people like myself love this album & were introduced to it at an early age like I was. I believe the original release was in 1963 (?) and I remember as a kid I thought Walter Carlos was the guy on the cover of the album... so imagine my surprise when years later I see the same album cover with the performer listed as Wendy Carlos. Could it be the same album? Was I about to get really happy? YOU BET! I was so delighted to see this released on CD I can't even tell you. I loved this album and listened to it repeatedly as a kid. I especially love the pure, triumphant, unadulterated and unapologetic JOY of the first track, the Cantata... wow, turn THAT up in your car and just feel the tears of joy flood your eyes... well, maybe pull over if you are like me and can't see for that very same reason!

Bach is so very well suited to this medium- to hear each line like this and really have so much great color and definition-- I think Bach himself would be so very proud of Wendy's achievement. This album was such a landmark- I also was fascinated by the Tomita Planets (a synthesized version of the same composition by Gustav Holst) when I was younger- but this album will always have a special place in my heart. If you get it for only the very first track, it will be money well spent. Having said that, the whole album is just amazing- the Air on a G string is so reverent and peaceful. The inventions are all a trip! The one in F always cracks me up because that was one of the 1st pieces of his I tried to play... very tough because the hands do exactly the same thing- but 1 measure apart. Wendy's tempos are cookin' too, such virtuosity! But the love is there too on the slower movements where the time and care with the dynamics is so evident.

GREAT ALBUM, be glad it's on CD and get it! You won't regret it.

I have just ordered this item so I can't comment on its production value however I purchased the original LP in SQ Quadriphonic and it sounded great;still does -I transferred it to CD some time ago; but I wanted a 'professional' copy. I hope this 'enhanced' version lives up to its QUAD predecessor.

5 out of 5 stars Bach, enhanced by Ms. Wendy Carlos.......2007-03-13

One of the attractions of this CD is that it portrays the Moog synthesizer. Its main attraction, in my opinion, is the performance in which Ms. Wendy Carlos has revealed the cosmic aspect of Bach's music. The Moog synthesizer was used as a vehicle to achieve this goal. The enormous popularity of this recording no doubt lies in the fact that Ms. Carlos has taken the best of the Bach's music and amplified it. This music is an abstraction fitting our times. Ms. Carlos has catapulted Bach to space. One can hear the cosmic fireworks, see brilliant colors, the birth and death of the stars, feel the loneliness of the infinite stretches of space, and the ultimate power of the hope that we can conquer our own mortality. I think that this beautiful music is all about the human spirit. It is Bach at his best.
I fell in love with this recording almost three decades ago. I maintain that there is no nicer performance of Bach. The genius of Ms. Wendy Carlos sparkles. It makes me reflect on the human achievements. It is wonderful that she has produced something so great, and that so many people have benefited from her talent.
My favorites are Symphonia to Cantata #29, Prelude and Fugue #7 in E-Flat Major and Prelude and Fugue #2 in C Minor (both from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier), and also the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major.
The recording is enhanced and it has a delightful addition of about 8 minutes in which Ms. Wendy Carlos tells us about the early beginnings of this project. The CD comes with a very attractive booklet that is artistically designed and has several informative write-ups about the history and development of this project.
This recording is a must!

Credo che "Switched-On Bach" sia il primo (o uno dei primi) dischi prodotti da W.Carlos.
Molto interessante.

5 out of 5 stars Switched-On Bach.......2007-01-24

Bach had a genius for polyphonic art as expressed in music. Hear his gift performed on the moog...the early synthesizer of the 60s...done tastefully and skillfully by Wendy Carlos. An eye opener in its time, yet still in demand some 40 years later. Why is that? Yes, questions...

Chess is a musical that sounds like it shouldn't work but instead succeeds surprisingly well. This is the original concept album that was recorded before the musical was staged in London. Chess is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the cold war. The composers are Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the Bs in ABBA) and the lyrics are by Tim Rice, who supplied the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, as well as Disney's Aladdin (with Howard Ashman), The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. The six-member cast does a beautiful job with the songs, which are a combination of ballads, rock, and operatic choruses. Murray Head's version of "One Night in Bangkok" became a surprise hit in the mid-'80s and it still turns up on the turntables in dance clubs around the world. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars This should never have worked at all.......2007-06-18

And on that basis alone, you've got to cut it some slack. Fortunately, not all that much slack turns out to be necessary.

While "Chess" may be a document of an era that no longer exists, there's a lot more going on than the surface metaphor. It holds up very well indeed. When it aims for humor, it generally succeeds, and likewise when it aims to devastate. What more can you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED MUSICAL FROM THE 80-IS.......2007-03-04

`Chess' is a musical that should be counted among the best of what the 1980-is had produced: side by side with `Cats', `The Phantom of the Opera', `Les Miserables' or `Miss Saigon'. The score as heard on this concept album, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (formerly of ABBA) and with the exceptional lyrics written by Tim Rice, stand proof to this. And yet, due to various reasons, like the changing of the director half way through London staging; a heavy rewrite for Broadway and a pan review from Frank Ritch (a.k.a. `The Butcher of Broadway'), `Chess' seems to be unjustly neglected.

This concept album is the main reason why the show has so many ardent fans until this day. Tim Rice wanted to write the show with the main plot revolving around chess for years and after his long time partner Andrew Lloyd Webber remained uninterested, he found the new collaborators in Ulvaeus and Andersson. The subject matter follows two international chess players in a championship, a Russian (Tommy Körberg) and an American (Murray Head) and a woman called Florence (Elaine Paige) who is a manager to the American but falls in love with the Russian. The story also draws a parallel between the game of chess and the cold war/real life situations.

This concept album was recorded in 1984, two years before the original London production took place. As the authors noted in the accompanying booklet, it was a work in progress and thusly the story is not quite readable here from the musical numbers alone. Despite that fact (which is amended by the synopsis included in the booklet), this album remains a winner. The score (played here by the London Symphonic Orchestra) itself makes an intriguing bland of the famous ABBA sound, the classical; the rock and the pop enhanced by the orchestral solo passages and the strong choral parts. The lush orchestrations add an epic touch to it and on the whole it is melodic and hummable, packed with great tunes. Some of the songs achieved huge success outside the musical: `I know him so well', a duet between Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, held the number one spot on the UK singles charts for 4 weeks in February 1985 and won Ivor Novello Award as the Best Selling Single; Murray Head's `One night in Bangkok' became one of the biggest dance hits of its time, often heard today. Some other notable tunes include `The Anthem' (Russian's deliberation on his homeland); the soaring rock songs `Where I want to be' and `Pity the child' (in the former, the Russian reflects upon his life under the spotlight; in the latter, the American ponders about his own unhappy childhood) or the gentle `Heaven help my heart' (in which Florence weighs up her relationship with the Russian).

A special reference must be made to Tim Rice's excellent lyrics. With `Chess' he managed to keep up to the high standards he set himself in `Jesus Christ Superstar' and Evita'. Again in this case he shows he is a lyrical wizard, with his familiar cynical touch. `The story of chess', in which he gives a history of the game in a couple of crafty verses, is a pure masterpiece. The same can be said of the song `I know him so well', where the two women reexamine their relationship with the same man. As a whole, `Chess' owes a lot of its appeal to Tim Rice's written word.

The cast on this album ranks the high standard of the material. The principal parts (sung by Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg and Murray Head) are delivered in a strong and impeccable fashion.

This 2-disc edition comes with a booklet containing a note from the authors, a text about chess, a full synopsis and a libretto, together with the photos of the principal singers.

Anyone interested in the modern musical theatre should find `Chess' to be a great score with great lyrics, which should be enough to satisfy any aficionado.

A magnificent musical, i have enjoyed the music since i first heard it and read the storyline. Had been unable to find it in our local music stores.Very pleased to find it on your site.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2007-01-12

I love "Chess"! I still remember the first time I heard the single "One Night in Bangkok" on my car radio. I thought it was so unusual and so very cool, so I tracked down the album and bought it. Then I taped it onto a cassette, which is what I've been listening to for years, so I finally broke down and got it on CD. Of course, it's on my iPod now. I've seen the musical, and I loved that, too.

2 out of 5 stars Concepts get better with practice.......2006-11-27

I love this show! That said, I do not care for this version of it. The inclusion of the word "concept" in the title means it is just that. This was, thankfully, not the final version of the show that would later spawn the hit song, "One Night In Bangkok".

With most Broadway musicals, the musical numbers tell the basic story of the show. If you listen to the recordings of Phantom, Mama Mia, Beauty and the Beast, you can discern the basic storyline of the show. Listening to this particular recording of Chess, though, will leave you wondering "What was that?" The Broadway arrival of Chess saw a much needed reworking of the storyline and arrangement of the musical numbers. This recording seems too much like a mish-mash of songs that don't really relate to each other.

For musical fanatics (like myself), I say "yes, you should have this recording in your collection", if only to understand how much work went into the show before it opened on Broadway.

If you are only buying the album because of "One Night In Bangkok", purchase the Broadway recording instead; you'll be much happier with the performance by Phillip Casnoff rather than Murray Head.

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

2 out of 5 stars What Happened??.......2006-01-25

I'm not sure if this show was intentionally trying to be depressing or if it just happened.
Why is this show soo very serious?

Anyway, since I'm here to review a score and not a show, here it is.
Side Show is the story of the Hilton sisters, not Paris and Nicky, but Daisy and Violet Hilton Conjoined twins who rose to fame In Vaudeville in the early years of the 20th century
the Cast recording captures the Best and Worst parts of the show itself. Most of the song are service-able in the context of the show and some are even good. Outside the show and on this CD they seem dull and boring, the singing seemes forced and the rhyme scheme on a lot of the songs is terrible. However there are a few that are still ok
1. Come Look at the Freaks
8. When I'm by Your Side
10. Leave Me Alone
15. New Years Day
19. Tunnel of Love
When I heard about this show I was truly excited to see it but after I did I was extremly dissapointed. I bought the Cd tryng to find somthing good but it didn't help. this show could have been one for the ages and instead it is stuck as another forgetable broadway show that in a few years might get a revival and might not. Too bad.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Score ... Too Bad Show Didn't Last Longer.......2005-07-21

Opening in the Fall of 1997, "Side Show" was roughly based on the lives of Daisy & Violet Hilton, Siamese twins who were Vaudeville performers during the Depression. Unfortunately, the production lasted only lasted about three months before closing.

Alice Ripley & Emily Skinner (both nominated for Best Actress Tonys) are terrific as the twins and have beautiful voices. The talented supporting cast includes Ken Jennings ("Sweeney Todd"), Norm Lewis, Hugh Panaro, and Jeff McCarthy.

Overall, the score is quite good and contains several memorable songs. Henry Krieger's beautiful music, however, is somewhat hindered by the score's uneven lyrics.

Best tracks:

Come Look At The Freaks
The Devil You Know
Who Will Love Me As I Am
You Should Be Loved
I Will Never Leave You

Hopefully, this production will surface again one day. Until then, this cd is a nice listen!

2 out of 5 stars Some Good Songs but I'd Recommend Other Musicals.......2004-11-13

Ok, I bought the CD because I heard a great song from this musical, "Feelings You've Got to Hide" (it wasn't even that good after listening to it again.) There were both positives to the CD and negatives. First the postivies: Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner have amazing voices and there are some great songs such as "I will Never Leave You". Now the negatives: the show did not live up to the potential it had. The two lead girls did not use the power in their voice that I would have like to have heard. The two lead males did not have the best voices (that is my personal opinion) as well. The lyrics were not that good and the story seemed forced. Other than a few good songs the musical was not that good and just was not the type of musical I enjoy. I would recommend musicals such as Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Avenue Q, etc. or musicals that has more than 7 songs you enjoy. There are good musicals but this just isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars A happy accident.......2004-09-27

When I picked up this cd, i was in a huge rush, and i ment to pick up show boat. so i rushed to the counter and paid and left without ever looking at the title. when i got home and realized my mistake and was disappointed and almost returned it, but then i thought i would listen to it, and i'm glad i did. at first i didn't connect with it, but something brought me to listen again, and again. The music is wonderful and the story is great and the performers are phenominal, however, i find some of the lyrics on the awkward side(listen to the fortune teller's solo in 'the devil you know'). but other than that this is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Sideshow gets to your heart.......2004-03-31

This recording is amazing. For anyone who has ever felt like an outsider this story is comforting and an affirmation that you are never alone. From gospel-blues to classic broadway/ rock opera this is simply an amazing score. It has everything from fun upbeat songs to deep heartwrenching ballads with chords that grab at your heart and don't let go. Sadly the show did not get the acclaim it deserved, and I hope it is revived. As a performer I pray one day I will be in a production of this brilliant and hauntingly composed musical.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars One of the worst covers and one of the best songs.......2007-04-07

The Joy Division cover is horrid and is vomit inducing. And this is coming from someone who enjoys the Nouvelle Vague cover.

The acoustic version of Nobody puts baby in the corner is brilliant. Pitch the dastardly electric version.

Fallout Boy overachieves. They are awesome at genius and are awesome at sucking.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Band and worst cover.......2006-03-27

Other bands have performed covers of Joy Division and most were pretty bad. The cover that fallout boy made of Love Will Tear us Apart is just plain crappy. The singing just sucks (for any songs by fallout boy), not even close to being as good as the original. The cover is a disgrace to Ian. If you want a good version hear the original.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Amazing, Simply Wonderful.......2006-03-18

The CD:
The tracks on this CD were just beautifully arranged, and preformed. I wasn't quite sure for "Love Will Tear Us Apart" since it was by Joy Division, but Fall Out Boy preformed it amazingly. My favorite track, and the shortest one at that, has got to be "it's not a side effect of the cocaine, i am thinking it must be love" It's written brilliantly.
The DVD:
Only a small section of this DVD is similar to Release The Bats, but the rest (story, videos, preformance, and cutting room floor) were quite good. I especially enjoyed the acoustic preformances of Saturday, Grenade Jumper, Dead on Arrivial, and more.

If you love Fall Out Boy or just acoustic music, I strongly incourage you to buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Acoustic CD.......2006-03-04

To the last reviewer, perhaps this is the more sensitive side of Fall Out Boy, but is that necessarily bad? Their acoustic stuff is AMAZING, or are you too obsessed about whether this is "real" punk music or not? Honestly, doesn't it matter more the MATERIAL IN THE CD, not the LABEL? Everyone has their own opinions on music and I'm going to express mine....

This CD rocks. Hands down. The music is heartfelt and you feel as if they're playing a private concert just for you. I like Fall Out Boy's other stuff, too, but I bought this after listening to "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy" first and fell in love with it instantly. The other stuff is just as amazing, too, so you won't be disappointed. The DVD is good, as well - you get an inside view into their band. This cd is worth the money if you like acoustic-ly driven music. Give it a try even if it isn't your thing. :)

Overall point: I LOVE THIS CD. Emotive and raw acoustic, this music really makes you think. The lyrics are deep. They express careful planning, as does the acoustic riffs. I recommend this whole-heartedly. <33

3 out of 5 stars it was ok..honestly.......2006-01-27

Well the best part of this CD i think is the acoustic versions of Grand theft autumn and nobody puts baby in the corner. The DVD is ok as well i suppose. If I had the choice between this and another CD of fallout boys then I would get the other CD but if you have the rest then you should just this anyway.

The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Fiorello.......2007-03-09

Great music. Only; I wish I had a DVD of the show.....

5 out of 5 stars A sleeper of the first order.......2007-03-06

Fiorello is a very dark comedy about the corrupt back-room politics, croneyism, and skulduggery surrounding Fiorello laGuardia's political career. Oh, and there's a romance thrown in. "Politics and Poker" in particular has a timely poignancy in light of the runup to the 2008 elections with Clinton, Obama, and -um - whoever the heck else is on the Democrat wanna-be list. I have to think there are some pretty stark parallels here. But then, that's what this timeless, delightful sleeper of an operetta is all about.

2 out of 5 stars A new York-centric non-hit .......2006-11-15

This never rose to the level of a 'hit'. At this time (2006) it is dated
technically and artisticly. It didn't win in '59, there is little hope that it will be remembered fondly in '06.
In the end I bought it for archival purposes only and I'm being kind.

5 out of 5 stars Laguardia isn't just an airport.......2006-08-07

Fiorello! was basically a play about New York City's great mayor, Fiorello Laguardia, that was turned into a musical by having an overture and 14 songs. Long ago, back in the late 1950s, I saw it as a child and really liked it - I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it again. Well, it is nothing less than spectacular! It has the best song about politcal corruption (!) ever written, Little Tin Box; a great song about a broken date, Marie's Law; a lyrical paean to back-room politics, Politics and Poker; and 11 others, all equally good (in fact, there's not a single dud in the score - as you would expect since it was written by the writers who did Fiddler on the Roof). The voices are great, the lyrics are all to the point, the music is unforgettable, and, for all those who don't know the story, the disc notes are really helpful. Maybe this is politcs seen through rose-tinted glasses, but it's wonderful to hear!

4 out of 5 stars a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04

FIORELLO! is a lovely, ahead-of-its-time musical, based on the career of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It starred Tom Bosley as La Guardia with a dream cast including Ellen Hanley, Pat Stanley and Eileen Rodgers.

The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".

Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".

Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.

For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.

This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.
