5 out of 5 stars beauty, simplicity, and utility.......2001-09-12

Of this CD's twenty-eight tracks, eighteen are arrangements by Kevin Siegfried; the remaining ten are straightforward, unadorned performances of Shaker hymns, sung either by the choir in unison, or by a solo voice, as they would have been sung in Shaker services. Occasionally the choir stomps and claps, also as the Shakers would have done. The unison songs and Kevin's settings blend seamlessly together, since Kevin's music is very sensitive to the spirit of the original tunes. His harmonies have an open, rough-hewn quality to them, like early American furniture, sturdy and useful. The music carefully mirrors and supports the text, occasionally employing mixed meter to follow the natural cadences of speech. The settings are largely homophonic, like Lutheran chorales, rendering the text easily comprehensible. Kevin avoids unnecessary embellishments and repetitions, and each piece is a small, well-proportioned gem, averaging about two minutes in length. In the liner notes, Kevin writes of his desire to preserve the Shaker ideals of "beauty, simplicity, and utility" in his settings, and he has succeeded brilliantly; the music is unassuming, serene, and peaceful.

5 out of 5 stars Words and Music Marry in Siegfried's Arrangements.......2001-06-27

This recording of Shaker Hymns arranged by composer Kevin Siegfried and sung by the very fine Tudor Choir of Seattle is magnificent for several reasons chief of which is the careful blending of text and music in the arrangements. The "gentle words" of these hymns come alive through Siegfried's thoughtful soundscapes, providing the right context for the message of these poignant and life affirming hymns. This is no small task and although the Tudor Choir sings beautifully throughout, it is the arranging that has really caught my ear on this cd; you'd be hard pressed to find a recording of choral works with a better marriage of text and music. Well worth your money, time, and ears.

4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-02-08

From the start of the album, with the marching horns. To the last track this album is upbeat.
The lyrics are artsy and angsty and The Plot can be melodic and harsh. Sometimes they can be the extreme of both in the same song.
I gave it four stars because although it's a fun album and it's great to listen to.
It didn't knock me out of my socks.

4 out of 5 stars Trashy goodness.......2005-06-05

Plot obliterates any fears of a sophomore slump within seconds of the Gorilla Biscuit's trumpet intro, announcing the arrival of a riff that's the audio equivalent to a bar room brawl.

On Love in the Fascist Brothel, they've replaced the jazz and DC punk with sass and swagger. Even though every track sounds like they're getting in fist fights with their instruments, the production's a definite step up from Disseration's. Double layered vocals and a monstrous rhythm section mold the record's chaos into a sledgehammer, a powerful tool which will no doubt cause blunt force trauma in inexperienced hands.

Maybe not the greatest analogy, but that rawness and grit of this record are what a lot of reviews I've read focus on, and what turns a lot of listeners off, and it's important to emphasize Plot knows exactly the kind of effect they're creating, and that they've created a record that's both supremely raw and hi-fi.

They've lost some fans by tossing out the jazz-punk on their last record, but this really just shows how deep the well of creativity this group taps into is. Despite the drastic turn in sound, this record stands as a complete artistic statement; it pummels the senses and looks into the future, instead of relying on their limited but already impressive discography. They never really defined themselves as jazz punk anyways, it was more the work of lazy journalists, so judging them by that label is unfounded. There's still some great sax work on the record, the parts are just more defined and have less of a free jazz feel than on Dissertation.

This album isn't just worth listening to for the piss, sweat and sass bleeding from every second of its 24 minute run time, these boys have the song writing skills to back up their attitude. Every song is distinct with its own riffs, hooks and flow.

Overall, I don't know if this is a better record than Dissertation, but it's definitely better made. The riffs and lyrics are more refined, and the production is a few notches up.
I would have liked more of the record to be up-tempo like Dissertation, instead of the trashy stomp that runs through a lot of the tracks, but there's plenty of grit and energy to go around.

I'm going to have to disagree with the Blood Brothers, Hella and Liars comparisons. Even though they seem to have a shared fan base, Plot and Blood Brothers seem pretty far apart on the post-hardcore spectrum. They're both a little "gay" live, but Plot's vocals share none of the raspiness or poetic nightmares spun by the BB's dual lyricists, and the instrumental's don't have that much rhythmically or dynamically in common, except that they're loud and trashy.

Hella, I just don't get that one at all. And the Liars, MAYBE, if their sound was a lot more intense and rounded out. But still, such a comparison doesn't do Plot justice, whether or not you do or don't like the Liars.

I was hesitant about this record before I heard it, since I was disappointed by their EP, and saw the bad puns in the track listing, and was worried that the satirical Nazi imagery would be too thin of a metaphor to stretch over an entire record. But so far, it's my favorite of 2005. Plot's successfully shown they'll have plenty of longevity on the post-hardcore scene, by releasing consistently great records which break new ground for the group, and pay homage to 30 year old punk heroes without sounding like they're beating a dead horse.

4 out of 5 stars Hate the Plot.......2005-05-31

I recently saw these guys live with the Blood Brothers, and I was blown away. Previous to that I had very little knowledge of The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, I knew they were opening for Blood Brothers so I took the time read about thier sound and performance, but took little stock in what I found.
Suffice to say, after thier live performance (apparently they are looking to start a sexual revolution of sorts) the Plot fast became one of my favorite bands. I bought Love in a Fascist Brothel after the show, and promptly inserted into my cd player that night.
As far as sound goes...it's a noisy album, I can't help but compare them to Blood Brothers. The songs are like rollercoasters, they go from one sound to the next and are over before you know what really hit you (the longest song is little over 3 minutes, while the shortest being alittle under 1 and a half). Admist the noise there's this sort of dancey element, it definately makes you want to move. The lead singer has a very 'punk' vioce, it's snotty and defiant and works very well within the album. Lyrically (and image wise) they remind me a little of Dead Kennedys (this could possibly just be because I'm a big DK fan) in that sort of ironic political way, but they are more abstract in thier lyrics.
One thing that I didn't like initially, but I've grown accustom to is that the singers vioce seems to be drowned out. I don't know if it was on purpose or just bad production.

4 out of 5 stars Poppy.......2005-03-28

But I like it. It's simple. If you enjoy Hella or Liars you will enjoy this. Nothing to hide behind and just rock!

5 out of 5 stars Maddness pure unadulturated madness.......2005-02-23

This cd is the biggest piece of crap I ever bought it is just such extreme f*ck*ng noise, havoc, and madness pure unadulturated madness I love it!!! Thank you god or whoever for The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower. TPTBUTET f*ck*n' rock the way it is supposed to be done.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29

Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly remastered classic.......2001-09-18

I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.

5 out of 5 stars Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13

CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31

Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues, who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible but short EP.......2005-02-18

Since By Man is one of the best things I have heard to come out of the hardcore scene in quite some time. For those of you who loved "We Sing the Body Electric" I highly recommend purchasing this album. Dancey yet intense and at times melodic this album takes off from where their first release left off. Even though I love this album it is rather short. The four tracks on it are all spectacular though. Just remember it's only an EP though, I think the length is around 14-15 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars if you're a SBM fan..........2004-09-25

you'll love it. similar to past releases (we sing.../split cd) since by man stands out in a sea of familiar chord progressions and screamy hardcore. adding a slight techno edge to their sound as heard in "we sing the body electric" along the lines of refused "shape of punk to come" since by man doesn't break new ground here but their energy and sincerity shine through. If you're a since by man fan you'll love it. the only draw back is its short length (4 songs 14 min.) which may discourage a purchase.

4 out of 5 stars An accomplished albumn for all seasons.......2006-03-19

Whoa! Great driving beats, fanatical lead guitar, uncompromising harmonies, genius lyrics, a touch of humanity and a whole lotta love. There are so many dimensions to this albumn that it is difficult to relate the feeling one gets when "immersing" oneself in it.
There a are quite a few stand-out tracks but it is one of those albumns where you love every track. It differs from "Rusty Rocks" which is a more eclectic collection of tunes that showcase FN's musical ability and their passion for life. This is an Experience albumn, you have to hear it for yourself, in your own time. The relevance of this band will probably never leave us and I hope they can continue with their fantastic tunes.
