Album Description
This is Europe's seventh album and it sounds like they have finally arrived. Their music has evolved and they are willing to take risks. The album is modern and contemporary, without losing sight of traditional classic rock influences. It has a much harder edge then most of their previous work. The album demonstrates a mix of great composition skills paired with versatile sound variations, a brilliant blend of hard rock and soft metal ballads that are sure to please fans of the band.
The album artwork cover was designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson. As a member of the design studio Hipgnosis, Storm worked on all the classic album covers by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Peter Gabriel.

oustanding.......2007-06-23
thic cd is even better than previous start from the dark, excellent songs , great guitar work, & singing, just wonderfull to listen to.
O.K - would not buy it again if I lost the CD.......2007-05-13
This is a decent album not one you want to hear over and over.
The singer has definitely gotten better from the earlier Europe days, and the sound of the band is a lot more metal.
Europe follows "modern" formula.......2007-03-03
The new Europe sounds a lot like Nickelback or whoever these new bands are (of which I'm not really familiar). I only became interested in this particular release because I like John Norum (who plays a lot like John Sykes) and this is all original members of the old Europe band. There are no "simple" romantic ballads or final countdown style songs on this CD. The songwriting reflects a certain level of maturity within the band. Not that the modern sound is more mature, that's not what I'm referring to. The songs are still fairly simple, but with a spiritual theme. The musicianship is adequate, but not terrific and John puts on a few decent leads here and there. One thing I like about John Norum and Joey Tempest, is they tend to write songs that kind of "float", but still provide a decent melody. There are two tracks that could easily be top twenty hits on this disc (why this has been deleted in North America is a mystery to me). "Always the Pretenders" and "Forever Travelling" are very good singles, and the disc could have used one or two more tracks along those lines to make this a five-out-of-five. If you're interested in Norum look for the single "love is meant to last forever" and the disc he did with Dokken "Up From the Ashes". That disc is excellent.
Running against the line, against the time..........2007-02-10
Yeah, people... stop bitching about Europe not playing 80's style anymore... this is the new era and their new sound. This album follows START FROM THE DARK and keeps its mood and attitude. John Norum has created a collection of great riffs, Joey Tempest sings from his soul, good lyrics make a solid album. Love the title track, Always the Pretenders, Let the Children Play, The Getaway Plan and Forever Traveling, to name a few. The guys are still rocking, period.
Wow.......2007-01-30
Short and to the point here... I haven't listened to Europe since I bought Appetite For Destruction in 1987 or 1988. Guns N Roses changed my views and musical taste forever. Well, for some reason I decided to pick this disc up and man am I glad I did.. Great job guys! My interest in Europe has been woken from the dead...

Blonde Redhead: The Secret Society of Butterflies (4AD).......2005-09-02
Everyone knows that sometimes in order to create a masterpiece, you have to leave a mess of debris to either throw away or work with all over again. And the more the mess, the better. Blonde Redhead's music from this album came staright from the Misery Is A Butterfly session. Misery Is A Butterfly is Blonde Redhead's next take on negativity, confusion, imagination, anger, and the need to rectify it all on Misery Is A Buterfly. The title would have said it all better. There is actually a collection of B-Sides on two of the bands singles: "Elephant Woman" and "Equus". OK. Really, a collection is more of an exaggeration, but it is a shortlist to behold. The one song from Misery Is A Butterfly, called "Messenger" is reworked including David Sylvian. Instead of sticking along with the regular working of the song, David Sylvian adds more of a dark Nick Cave feel to the music, changing the formula by adding in a drop of new direction. In fact, even if I were to skip that song, it would have done just as well, since every song sets itsef up like a certain opera on its own. "Melody" (French Version), may sound elegant alone and once you try translating the lyrics. Otherwise, the music kind of becomes the type of debris we don't understand. Personally, I don't really mind it much. Language adds art and character. Plus, you can kind of hear her sing in English "These are the things you can do for me." And sometimes you just wonder what the heck that was. The next b-side which is the last of them is "Misery" (Wicked Version). I say this music would fit as well, mostly because I couldn't really tell the difference between the two, besides time to subside, whereas, the Wicked version fades at the near end. Either way, the imagery of the lyrics "Remember we watch misery spread her wings?"; "Misery Is A Butterfly". They are kind of living up to their view of life different than ours.
The only true B-Side is "Tons Confession", which can be found on the "Elephant Woman" Single. I didn't really see why this song was left of of the album, because the music fits kind of well. Also, it fits the theme of the album. Now it is not in my nature to judge an EP or an album full of throwaways and used casts, but if you were to listen to the music, you would know exactly why this music shouldn't even be B-Sides as much as being on an album. But it turns out the music is kind of a masterpiece on its own. Rarely, any album can create a collection of B-Sides and accidentally create another masterpiece. Buy this is you are either a fan of the band or Misery Is A Butterfly.

My Favorite Band.......2005-03-28
This is simply an amazing album. When I first played it, I was afraid it wouldn't live up to (sound as good as) the first two albums. But from the very first song ("Swan"), I was completely sold on the band's music once again.
I just learned that Aaron Perrino has worked on three albums with his new band "Dear Leader." I ordered all three "Dear Leader" albums this evening. Needless to say, I highly recommend all of the Sheila Divine albums and look forward to hearing new songs from "Dear Leader."
Overblown.......2004-10-29
The Sheila Divine certainly struck gold with their outstanding debut New Parade, an album with excellent, moody songwriting and dynamic range. Unfortunately, it seems like too many people felt it was their duty to praise lead singer Aaron Perrino on how incredible his voice was. Now instead of a passionate outing with yearning vocals and keen songcraft, we have an overblown series of vocal acrobatics that sound as if they were intended to get said frontman a tryout for the Phantom of the Opera. This album just limps along wounded, coming off flat and contrived and frankly I just didn't get it. An unfortunate mis-step for a once promising band.
Stunningly Amazing.......2003-05-09
I first heard of The Sheila Divine in 2000 when i saw them open for Morrissey. I was blown away by their music and completely hooked ever since. The Smiths/Morrissey used to be my favorite band/artist of all time (for over a decade)...that is until I heard The Sheila Divine.
This cd, Secret Society, is their third (well, actually fourth) release and you can see how they've evolved and improved without losing their trademark sound. my only complaint is that it only has six songs on it. But those six are just phenominal.
Simply stated...you have to get this.
The Word is Out on The Sheila Divine's Secret Society!.......2002-10-11
The Sheila Divine's new EP, Secret Society, simply cannot remain a secret. This is an E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T disc from one of the most promising lesser-known bands in music today. In my opinion, this album provides ample evidence that The Sheila Divine is poised to make it big. This relatively young band has produced a work that rivals albums from the most popular and preeminent rock artists today. Secret Society is complete with outstanding songwriting, energetic musicianship, and the powerful vocals of Aaron Perrino. Rock music just doesn't get better than this!
The EP begins with "Swan," a song with a name that dovetails directly with the tune itself. As you might imagine, this is a soaring, graceful, majestic song. On the second track, "We All Have Problems," Aaron Perrino recounts feelings of insignificance in the world, making this perhaps the most personal of all songs on the album. "Dramatica" is an effervescent, visceral experience, a masterfully written song supported by earnest vocals and engaging musicianship. "Back to the Cradle" is the hardest song on the album, a melodic but driving rocker with an explosive chorus. The next tune, "Calling All Lovers" is a sweeping ballad irresistibly delivered with the power, passion, and sincerity of Aaron Perrino's voice. The final track, "Black River," is an exquisitely crafted song - between the melodies, the harmonies, the transitions, the lyrics, and the intricacies of sound, this song approaches musical perfection.
My complaint about Secret Society? It only has six tracks!!!
I must also say this. Before buying Secret Society, I read reviews comparing The Sheila Divine to U2. No way, I said to myself, there's no way anybody can compare to the greatest rock and roll band of the last 20 years. Well, a couple of songs on this album sound just like something you might hear from U2. Listen to "Dramatica" and "Black River," and then you can draw your own conclusions.
I also own a copy of New Parade, a great album that was my initial happenstance exposure to The Sheila Divine. With their latest release, this band has definitely won me over: I'm a committed fan. I look forward to hearing more outstanding music from The Sheila Divine!!!
underappreciated and deserving.......2002-09-25
I've been a fan of TSD since I heard "Opportune Moment" in the Cambridge Soundworks commercial. Though the band has progressed since then, their sound remains recognizably TSD: the lyrics are thoughtful without being pretentious, and the musical hooks... these guys deserve a wider audience. So far, my favorite track is "The Swan", which hit me like a 2x4. This'll be on my turntable for a good long while....

Can Somebody Find Me A Copy Of This CD.......2003-12-24
I too, was a fan of this group. "Why Did You Run Away", was one
of the better freestyle songs in local airplay during it's time. I took them for granted a little bit, and now I regret never buying their greatest hits CD, figuring I would pick it up another day. About 10 years later...... I am still looking
to find their greatest hits CD. I can still remember seeing
them play at Casanova's in Hialeah. Suerte!
Da boys with da Nu Look.......2003-06-29
Incredible CD and amazing group!...you wont be disappointed.
5 Stars? Let me explain..........2003-05-12
Why 5 stars? While a vast majority of the populace has probably never even heard of Secret Society, I hold the band close to my heart for several reasons. First, they were a Miami phenomenon during the Freestyle years which occurred in my late teens and early twenty. These hometown boys were, for a short time, appearing absolutely everywhere in the south Florida club scene. These were the days before South Beach became the nightlife Mecca it is now, and cruising The Grove (check it for those who know) was at the peak of popularity. To my knowledge, only the (ever changing) duo Lime was more ubiquitous. Second, here was a local band that mixed dance music with New Wave, and threw in a little Latin-culture-afro-Cuban influence into their musical Cuisinart. An outstanding and novel feat for a group of this kind during this relatively short-lived musical movement. From Cuban-Jazz jams like "Da Boyz with Da New Look" to impeccable ballads like "Too Blind to See", with a sax riff as memorable as the one from Geroge Michael's "I'm never Gonna Dance Again" (heady praise indeed), this band had a style, a flair, and a range rarely seen today.

Excellent Fusion of Past and Present.......2007-03-29
Excellent fusion of metal from the 80s to the 2000s. This album has it all: melody, riffs, shredding, ballads, fast songs, great lyrics, great singing voice, and most importantly a modern sound. These guys have always made great music, and this is a great album to have. They're simply geniuses! If you liked "The Final Countdown" and "Start from the Dark", this album marries both flawlessly.
Forget the old Europe.......2007-01-11
I'm not a Europe Fan. I've never been a Europe Fan. The Final Coutdown gets on my nerves, i bought the album and despite the fact that i do like a lot of hair metal records (such as Dokken, Cinderella Danger Danger etc...)i didn't like it.
But after reading an interview of John Norum i decided to give this album a try.
Oh My God. Forget about that old Band you heard on the radio it's another band, this is a true, mature, classic rock band. That Rocks.
This album is nearly perfect to me. Good riffs, ultra-catchy singing, emotional solos, keyboard, bass, and that sweet classic distortion that doesn't make the guitar rythm tracks sound like a giant mosquito attack.
The structure of the songs is obviousely worked on but still keeps that live / jam feeling.
So if you want one of those rock albums that's so catchy you'll find yourself singing in the shower, if you want this rock album that makes you move on your chair like it's an electric chair, that makes you playing hair guitar in the bus with everybody looking at you and you don't give a S***, this is it.
A more mature Europe for a more mature audience.......2006-11-16
I will admit, I wasn't sure how I felt about this cd upon my first listen. I instantly liked Start From the Dark, which was a definite departure from older material. This album seems much more adventurous, different sonic textures, different moods. With every spin, I liked it more, each song was ditinct and memorable. I have grown to love it. The songs are memorable, each with a different flavor, but a different sort of hook. As much as I loved Start From the Dark, this album seems more varied than their previous album. My personal favorite was the last track, "The Devil Sings the Blues," which highlights John Norum's fretwork with its uptempo outro, very reminiscent of his solos on Don Dokken's solo album, Up From the Ashes. "Always the Pretender" is most likely the first single, and is most representative of Europe's new sound, with a catchy chorus and fast upbeat verse. Europe experiments with different vocal effects (I think Joey's using a megaphone!) as well as a youth choir (in "Let the Children Play," an excellent mid-tempo track), making for an interesting listening experience. I like the keyboard work by Mic Michaeli on "Secret Society", adding cool musical textures while being somewhat understated (as opposed to The Final Countdown), as well as the beautiful piano on "Mother's Son." This Europe, while being fun and adventurous, shows the wisdom of their years, and gives their more mature fanbase more food for thought and ear.
great 1.......2006-11-06
If you thought that the Start from the dark album was great i can asure you that you gonna like this. But i think you need to listen or buy the Start from the dark album first cause this album is like the Dark Album very differnt from the earlyer records. Its more harder and heavyer and more modern sound. The albums got a lot of great riffs by John "the guitargod" Norum.
This is a great followup- album which i think is a lot better than Start from the dark which was just a wormup.
Buy it and enjoy it.
Sensational!.......2006-11-06
I agree, "Start from the Dark" sounds like just a warm-up compared to "Secret Society". This fantastic album contains all the qualities I want to hear from Europe: Joey Tempest's distinct vocals, charming melodies, sweet guitar solos and heavy riffs, great choruses, upbeat and constant tempos (which you can almost dance to, like many of the songs on "Wings of tomorrow") and lots of big hooks! This album will get you instantly hooked. It's addictive. I play it almost everyday. I've been a fan for 20 years and as much as I love the classic Europe material, "Secret Society" is like a quantum leap above it. Even longtime skeptics cannot deny what a great record this is (and I've read many such positive reviews). I would love to hear this ENTIRE album performed live, and that's the best compliment I can give "Secret Society".

Beautifully Gritty.......2006-07-24
Elevator Action does everything right. They've got crunchy riffs, punk attitude, and that swagger that makes bands like The Stones so damn cool. But they've also got a great sense of melody and a knack for really personal lyrics.
'Society, Secret' may well be one of the best records this year. And I don't say that lightly.
Punk's Not Dead.......2006-06-10
All the early punk rockers ever wanted was to make pop music. The Ramones said they wanted to be like The Beatles on speed. Blondie idolized Phil Spector's girl-group pop.
And with Society, Secret, Elevator Action has picked up that legacy, offering catchy hook, pretty harmonies and enough attitude to take the snarl off Billy Idol's face.
This is not hardcore. And that's OK. EA takes influence from the expressive glam rock of David Bowie and The New York Dolls, with the cocky sarcasm of new wave acts like Costello or Blondie, and uses it to craft edgy pop songs that are as accessible as they are personal.
