This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Not quite Disney caliber, but pretty darn good..........2004-10-23
It's been years since I've watched "Muppet Treasure Island" or heard its soundtrack. Or it had been, anyway. I decided to listen to the MTI soundtrack for the first time in years...and it's not a bad CD at all.
The CD starts off in a grand fashion, with a sweeping instrumental tune that was probably played over the opening credits. Nothing too exciting, but a very nice touch.
The strongest songs on the soundtrack are towards the beginning. "Shiver My Timbers," a somewhat foreboding song, is a very piratey tune and sets up the movie's mood and backstory nicely. "Something Better" is sweet, almost overly so, and conveys the character of Jim well enough. Gonzo and Rizzo seem out of place on that track, but that's just my opinion. "Sailing for Adventure" is used to start off the voyage, and succeeds well at doing that. It gets both the ship and the movie moving, and it actually succeeds with its attempts to be funny.
The level of quality takes a sharp drop after those tracks, unfortunately. "Cabin Fever" is too random for my liking. It seems like the songwriters were trying to funny, and were trying much too hard at that. "Professional Pirate" really doesn't add anything to the soundtrack beyond giving Tim Curry a chance to sing, and something about the phrase "professional pirate" grates on me. "Boom Shaka Laka" doesn't have any vocals worth noting, so it gets skipped.
The final vocal track (from the movie, anyway) is "Love Led Us Here." This is the obligatory schmaltzy love song, and the only track that features Kermit and Piggy. I know that the song was thrown in so that soundtracks would be sold and so that the iconic frog and pig wouldn't be left off of the CD entirely. Even so, I still love the song. It fit into the movie better than some of Disney's love songs do (I'm thinking of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" in particular), and the song itself is touching without being overly sappy. Managing to make the love song work without seeming blatantly obvious is worth bonus points.
The rest of the soundtrack's bulk is made up of instrumental music, much like most Disney soundtracks are. It's well done, for the most part, and it worked well enough in the movie if memory serves, but there's not much that I can write about for it.
The final two songs were played in the movie's credits. "Love Power" is a decent song, but it doesn't seem to fit the movie. There's a reason why it was played with the credits. There's also a poppy version of "Love Led Us Here," which was probably made to sell soundtracks. It didn't work. The song doesn't work nearly as well when it's taken out of the context of the movie. More importantly, the Kermit/Piggy version is just better.
Overall, I feel that the soundtrack is a good one. The few songs that I disliked were more than made up for by the instrumental tracks and rest of the songs with vocals. It's not to the level of "The Muppet Movie," and it's not going to replace "Aladdin" or "The Lion King" as one of the best kiddy movie soundtracks. The CD is enjoyable, though, and that's what matters the most.
The Best Ever.......2002-08-11
Even though Muppet Treasure Island has been said not to be a true Muppet movie, it's awesome. Who ever said that needs to get their head exaimed! I can't stop listenig to the soundtrack. My favorite song on there is "Something Better" but "A professional pirate" ranks a close second. I recommend this to people of all ages. Get it while you can because(from what i've heard so far)Jim Henson productions won't be releasing anymore soundtracks again.
A soundtrack as good as any Disney movie has had.......2002-06-14
"Muppet Treasure Island" is the most satisfying Muppet movie to date, and a big reason for it is the music. Composer Barry Mann and lyricist Cynthia Weil have written a half-dozen songs that compare admirably to any of the great Disney movies. The big show-stopper is "Cabin Fever", an uproariously silly number about the crew going stir crazy when the ship is trapped in the doldrums. But my favorite songs are three nautical numbers that remind me of the Kline-Ronstadt version of "Pirates of Penzance". "Shiver My Timbers" provides an ominous exposition of how the treasure was originally hidden, "Sailing for Adventure" is a rousing start to the sea voyage ("With our hearts unbound and our flag unfurled/We're under way and off to see the world"), and Tim Curry as Long John Silver extols the advantages of being "A Professional Pirate". Inevitably, there's also a big smarmy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight/A Whole New World"-type ballad, "Love Led Us Here" -- I prefer the Kermit-Miss Piggy rendition to the lush version by John Berry and Helen Darling (maybe YOU'VE heard of them). A big chunk of the album is orchestral music that played in the background of various scenes. The album starts with a brief but rousing opening theme, goes into the songs, followed by the soundtrack music, and ends with a catchy Ziggy Marley closing song and the Berry-Darling duet. This pacing makes listening to the whole CD at once less than the sum of its parts, as the transitions are too abrupt.
Muppets do Sailor Music and it's grand!.......2001-09-03
This album is one of my son's favorites. They love it for the sea bearing fun songs and excellent music. The opening song is one of the best opening songs from a movie I myself have heard. IF you like the quality of the first muppet movie music, you will love this one too!

If this ambitious, completist retrospective of Limerick, Ireland's most notable '90s musical export seems more befitting a rock dinosaur than a band whose résumé spans but four albums, it's perhaps a telling comment on both the potency of the Cranberries' international success and the often treacherous vagaries of the contemporary music business. Though singer Dolores O'Riordan was a last-minute addition to the lineup, her unique vocal talents quickly came to virtually define the band, largely overshadowing founders Noel and Mike Hogan in the bargain. This set documents the band's rise from its debut, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Cant We? (and its sleeper hit "Linger"), through its artistic recapitulation, 1999's Bury the Hatchet, dedicating a disc to each album and offering up a generous selection of period-appropriate bonus tracks (mostly from B-sides, remixes, and other collections). But it's a rocky, cautionary road, especially after the band followed up its sublime No Need to Argue and breakout single "Zombie" with the turgid, modern-rock posturing of To the Faithful Departed, the band's ill-fated collaboration with Aerosmith producer Bruce Fairbairn; Cranberries, meet turkey. If that effort foolishly squandered the successes garnered by their guitar-driven "indie rock meets Celtic folk mysticism" charms, Hatchet returned them to their roots posthaste, but arguably too late. The bonus material is equally far ranging (and just as mixed)--from an embarrassing Pavarotti collaboration to decidedly left-field covers of the Carpenters' "Close to You" and Fleetwood Mac's "Go You Own Way," tracks that further underscore O'Riordan's singular abilities to interpret a song. It's an anthology that suggests that the Cranberries were considerably more than the sum of "Linger," "Zombie," "Salvation," "Ode to My Family," and their other standout songs--but also one that demonstrates how quickly much-touted alt-indie sensibilities can be disastrously co-opted. --Jerry McCulley

The Cranberries Treasure Box is amazing! The box design is cute and charming. Even if you are a fanberrie and own all the c.d.s already you still need this to complete your collection. Every c.d. is remade and includes extra tracks from when that particular c.d. came out so that means you will get every c.d. again but with extra (hard to find) tracks. There are 21 total extras in the whole set. And they are all great, My favorite extra track is "So Cold In Ireland" There is also I really neat song it is a preformance by:Doloras and Pavarotti called Ave Maria. This is one of the coolest things I spent my money on worth ever cent!

Every single Cd is marvellous. If you love Cranberries, you should purchase such a magnificent item.
This is people's chance to listen to Cranberries B-Sides, and be aware of how wonderful these songs are. I also love Dolores O'Riordan voice.
If you have the opportunity and the means to buy it, do not waste your time... You will be really amazed with this product.

I already had all of the Cranberries CD's before I bought this, but I still think that it was well worth my investment. There are a TON of songs and all of them are excellent. Like the title says, the Cranberries are simply the best band out there in my (if somewhat un-objective) opinion.

To put it mildly, this is the best music purchase I've ever made. The Cranberries are, in my opinion, the best band out there right now. I cannot get tired of listening to their music! Most good bands have three or so really good songs per CD. Well, EVERY song on these CD's is great. If you like The Cranberries as I do, you may also want to check out Dido's CD, "No Angel".

Nikki Sudden has been working on the songs found on Treasure Island since finishing his last proper album, 1998's Red Brocade. With a short list of around 40 numbers to choose from (many of which had been demoed in Bavaria and Berlin), Sudden and his band The Last Bandits (John Clifford Barry on bass and Stephane Doucerain on drums) assembled themselves for initial sessions in mid-2002. This motley group of expatriates who'd exiled themselves to Germany set up shop at John Rivers' WSRS studio in Leamington Spa, England, a home away from home where Sudden has recorded the vast majority of his work during his extensive 30-year career - which spans his pioneering early work as a founder of the Swell Maps (who released two critically acclaimed & highly influential full-lengths and a slew of singles), his albums with the revered Jacobites, over a dozen solo albums and the dark masterpiece Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc, his 1987 collaboration with Rowland S. Howard. Treasure Island is a stunning achievement, boasting Sudden's best songwriting in twenty years.
The album features incredible guest performances from rock'n'roll hall-of-famers Ian McLagan (The Small Faces, The Faces, Billy Bragg) and Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers), as well as Terry Miles (Bernard Butler), Dave Kusworth (Jacobites), and Anthony Thistlethwaite (The Waterboys).

Nikki we miss you.......2006-05-13
The recent death of Nikki Sudden leaves a huge hole that I don't think can be filled by anybody. Nikki was a true original, an English eccentric, a great writer, a snappy dresser, and last but not least a truly unique rock and roller. This album has a wonderful, loose feel, as if Nikki and his backing musicians were just jamming and making up stuff as they go along. Not many can pull that off and make it work. Extra points are awarded for getting Mick Taylor to drop by and add his always-transcendent guitar work.
What do great musicians play for themselves? This Record!.......2004-10-17
This is a great record. Nikki Sudden gathered a group of first-rate musicians (including Mick Taylor) in addition to his Last Bandits to put together a collection of songs that you can tell they loved playing. This is not the result of lots of fancy post production. It's well recorded, real music with a good vivid sound and plenty of fabulous grooves. Listen to it once, and you'll really like it. Listen to a few times, and you'll love it. Nikki's vocals sometimes lean toward Dylan but in a good way--careful lyrics sung with feeling.
