Waterboys.......2007-05-14
Hadn't heard Waterboys for some years. then this cropped up on Radio 2 a few weeks ago. This is Mike Scott at his evocative best. Almost Dexy's Midnight Runners in the fiddle hooks! A cracker.

Album Description
Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) once again reinvents the cinematic experience with a heartwarming story of two little boys, faith, miracles...and lots of money. Starting anew after the death of their mother, 9-year-old Anthony is ever practical, while his 7-year old brother Damian uses imagination, fantasy, and faith to make sense of his confusing world. When a suitcase full of money falls out of the sky at Damien's feet, it sets the boys on the adventure of a lifetime that leads them to realize that true wealth has nothing to do with money. Featuring original score by John Murphy, "TUMBLE AND FALL" by Feeder, "BRAZIL" by S'Express, and the film's signature song "NIRVANA" by El Bosco.

A mantra for love.......2007-05-19
Whole disc it is beutiful, the movie too. But, the song Nirvana is the most beautiful song that a lot of people can hear. Its a kind of mix of apocaliptic premonition with love song. Chorus like it were came from the sky by angels. Really, beautiful song for all kind of liking.
Brilliant!!.......2007-05-12
The soundtrack and the film are both brilliant!! The touching tracks on the soundtrack help you remember what it feels like to be a child. Imagination. That is what is missing from today's society and that is what Millions helps us recapture!!
Worth a million!.......2007-01-04

Excellent Record.......2003-10-15
Greg Naughton is a fantastic singer/songwriter. He has a beautiful voice, his lyrics are both insightful and catchy, and the record as a body is just amazing. I saw Greg Naughton with Rich Price in Philadelphia, opening for the Ben Taylor Band (also wildly awesome), and I was so impressed that when I saw that they were opening for somebody else this month I bought tickets without having ever heard of the headliner (Stephen Kellogg, who turned out to be--you guessed it--excellent!). I look forward to seeing Greg again and I tell all my friends to buy his record.
New Act with Fresh & Classic Feel.......2002-05-02
I picked up this CD a few months ago at their show in downtown NYC, and when I found them here at amazon, I figured I'd put in my two cents. I know that the words 'fresh' and 'classic' don't often get paired up in descriptions, but they are always the first two that come to mind when I think about GN&SNS (Greg Naughton & the Stark Naked Sole for the uninitiated). Greg--who is the lead singer and songwriter--seems to channel some of my favorite pop and rock artists (Jeff Buckley, Stevie Wonder, the Counting Crows) with each song while still putting out an original sound. The result, both live and on the CD, is songs that are new and engaging, yet familiar. I give the CD 5 stars, and I mean it. Check out the free tracks; I don't think you'll be disappointed. And if you're out in the Big Apple, see if you can't find him live.
Fantastic CD!.......2002-04-26
When I first got this CD, it didn't leave my player for the next two weeks. My favorite song is "The Ballad of Valley Forge Road", mostly because I am a [soft touch] for sweet ballads. But every time I listen to the album, another song catches my attention. "Janie Come" is a great toe-tapping jaunt with major hit potential. "Plastic Vagabond" has one of the catchiest choruses I've ever heard, and "Damascus" really showcases Greg Naughton's flexible voice. The three Sun Songs have a common theme that threads them together, creating a beautiful tapestry of soulful lyrics; all the songs are written by Greg Naughton, a master lyricist. And be sure to listen all the way through the final track for a surprise.

Finally, this 1966 gem is available on CD. Though one of majestic-toned, blues-and-bop tenor saxophone maestro Stanley Turrentine's lesser-known albums, Rough 'n' Tumble is nonetheless a foot-stomping delight. On six very engaging numbers, Stanley is surrounded by a dynamic seven-piece all-star band that features trumpeter Blue Mitchell, baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, guitarist Grant Green, drummer Mickey Roker, and McCoy Tyner (!!!) on piano. The very solid arrangements are by top-drawer writer Duke Pearson. Each track has something special. "And Satisfy" is a riveting, shuffle blues. Turrentine's reading of the theme and his singing then shouting, blues-drenched solo sport his typical vocal inflections. Mitchell and Green's more boplike (though still indigo-shaded) efforts provide delicious contrast. Turrentine's solo on Sam Cooke's "Shake" is another joyous holler. Ray Charles's ever-so-slow ditty, "What Could I Do Without You," has the tenorman at his emotive best, pulling the listener in with crying-like notes while Tyner gets Ray's piano style just right. Stanley also sings out on "Walk On By," and Roker's crisp cymbal and drum work help "Feeling Good" motor right along with a spark. Stanley employs the wears-well melody in his percolating improvisation, and Tyner also scores with a similar approach. The closing "Baptismal," the one strictly straight-ahead piece here, is home to crackling solos from the leader, Tyner-making the style he developed with Coltrane work superbly in a more traditional context--and the ever-galvanizing, gritty and rhythmically sure-footed Adams. A winner all around. --Zan Stewart
Customer Reviews:
WOW!!!! I'm "awe" struck!.......2006-08-01
There is nobody in the jazz world that can compare to Stanley Turrentine. This cooking cd has fine musicians: Grant Green on guitar (it doesn't get much better) and McCoy Tyner on piano (a tour-de-force experience) to name a few. As for instruments, behold the brass: trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, and baritone sax.
Add the song-writers: Ray Charles, Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley, Sam Cooke, Burt Bacharach/Hal David, and John Hines. Who could be better or sweeter!
While this work is full of gems the one not to miss is the finale "Baptismal". It is over six and one half minutes of magnifique!
While Stanley Turrentine will be missed for not being able to continue his soulful artistry into this century, he has left a great and brilliant body of work behind him. Thank you, Stanley!
Pure unadulterated soul-jazz classic from 1966.......2003-01-09
This album is a prime example of soul-jazz, even though it doesn't feature the Hammond B-3 organ that is so characteristic of the genre. Most of the tunes are based on the blues scales and gospel rhythms that are the essence of soul-jazz, which largely distinguish it from the earlier jazz genres of dixieland, swing, and bebop.
The presence of McCoy Tyner, Pepper Adams, James Spaulding, Blue Mitchell, Grant Green, Bob Cranshaw, and Mickey Roker, along with arrangements by Duke Pearson, should give this enough jazz credentials to satisfy most listeners. It's not the hard bop or post-bop that Tyner is mostly associated with, but this was early in his career, before his style was fully developed.
Stanley was capable of playing more harmonically advanced material, but this is representative of his strength, which is more about tone and timbre than navigating complex chord changes. Legendary audio engineer Rudy Van Gelder was also on board to ensure that the proceedings were captured as accurately as possible with the technology of the era. At about 38 minutes, the playing time is brief by the modern standard of CD, but it's all good.
Pepper Adams - Sax (Baritone), Brass
Grant Green - Guitar
Blue Mitchell - Trumpet
Duke Pearson - Arranger
James Spaulding - Sax (Alto)
Stanley Turrentine - Sax (Tenor)
Bob Cranshaw - Bass
McCoy Tyner - Piano
Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer
Mickey Roker - Drums
classic sugar man.......2000-10-31
mr. turrentine is one of the finest soul jazz parctitioners around. his classic album is "sugar" recorded in the early 70s for CTI, but his work with blue note in the 60s is well worth the trip. he gained notoriety with jimmy smith, and his own albums retain that blues-bop feel and mood to a "t." this album features several r-n-b covers that just boil. highlights are the ray charles tune, "what could i do without you?"; mr. t's reworking of the soul classic, "shake," and finally a swinging "walk on by." the closing "baptismal" is out of place-- a blue note hardbop showcase (and finely done)that seems to add a haute cuisine dessert to a grits and gravy meal. oh, well... mr. turrentine is in fine form as is the larger than usual band, featuring pepper adams on baritone sax, grant green on guitar, blue mitchell on trumpet, and a surprisingly soulful mccoy tyner on piano (he was also in the midst of being in john coltrane's classic free jazz experiments at the time). well worth the price of admission!
Great Album of Soul/R & B covers.......2000-09-19
Stanley Turrentine was in the prime of his soul-jazz period on this recording. He always sounded like a one man horn section to me. Pepper Adams (baritone sax), Grant Green (guitar) and Mickey Roker (drums) provide support, I believe for the only time on record. "And Satisfy" shuffles like they just don't shuffle anymore. Mickey Roker plays it sneaky and underhanded at a rapid clip, and doesn't sound like he's breaking a sweat. "Feeling Good" is the best track--if you haven't heard it it is a great introduction to Stanley Turrentine at his absolute best. Blues is in every note. For the jazz "purists", there aren't enough funny notes to make it worth your while. If you love soul/blues music done in a jazz style, you have to check this one out.

Tumble-N-Tunes is a Great CD.......2005-10-06
My son, who is almost 2 years old, loves the Tumble-N-Tunes CD. After I purchased the CD, my son wanted to play it all the time. We play the CD in a portable CD player so he can control how many times he wants to hear each song. He has played the CD non-stop for multiple hours at a time.
My son especially likes the songs "Tumble-n-Tune", "Pop-n-Hop", "Balance Beam-n", "Do the Bump!" and the "Tumble-n-Cheer!". During the song "Pop-n-Hop", he will go to the cupboard, where we keep the plastic grocery bags, and throw the bags around while he is jumping. When the "Balance-Beam-n" song comes on he walks on this piece of wood that joins our tile and wood floors together. When the song "Do the Bump!" starts, my son runs to find his tambourine and marches around playing the tambourine.
The songs are upbeat and are all different. I also like the songs because the words are easy to hear and understand. Even my son, who is not even two, understands the words in the songs. When the song says "jump" or "turn around" my son will perform these actions. In the song "Walk like the Animals" different animals are mentioned and whenever my son hears the word "elephant" he will do the hand sign for elephant.
Great for young children.......2003-03-23
I was looking for something to give to my five yr.old grandson.
I rarely get to spend any time with him, so I wanted something we could do together. Tumble n Tunes was great. He took to it right off. As an instructional CD it was very easy to follow and he had a ball. Frankly , so did I. Even after I was worn out,he continued and even added some of his own {Dancing} routine.
Aaron is now totally interested in tumbling and gymnastics.
Just the other day my son called to thank me again for finding it. He says that Aaron takes it to school now and the whole class
follows it. The teacher has asked for a copy--I'm looking forward to finding a video on the site soon.
Aaron calls it granpa's CD and at least for now it's his favorite.
That alone makes my heart stronger. Thanks Dayle and Renah

John McCormack - Rare Recordings 1904-1942.......2003-02-15
This CD was most welcome to my collection. I have a fair number of McCormack originals, mostly from 1910 - 1927. It is especially interesting to be able to hear the extremes, beginning and end. McCormack was probably THE singer of his age in that he sang well, everything from Sonny Boy to Il Mio Tesoro. One critic wrote that he never stooped to material that was beneath him, but raised it to his level. It was interesting to me that he did not spring from his singing master's loin, fully developed, but spent seven years as a professional singer developing his skills. We see his promising beginning with the 1904 sessions. If I have a complaint about the set, it is with these transfers. Paul Wolf, in his John McCormack Home Page, discusses the debate between playing the G.T.&T. records at 72 or 76.6 rpm. I would guess that this set uses the slower speed. If this is so, Mr. Worth is indeed right. They sound too slow, almost to the point of slurred speach. Unfortunately, these are the only first recordings which I have been able to find on the market. The rest of the collection is fine and includes many rarities, including unissued test pressings from McCormack's personal collection. As he aged, his voice diminished while his skill as a singer increased. Even at the end of his career, he did not make a bad record. Despite my complaint, I would not deny myself this album, nor should anyone who wants to hear the beginning and conclusion of an incredible career.

The young John McCormack........2004-05-26
Selected for inclusion in this second John McCormack CD issued by Naxos are Irish songs he recorded between the years 1910 and 1921. Don't expect the John McCormack aged 25 in 1910 to have the interpretative skills evident in his later years, but the voice was already compelling in its unique nasal tenor quality, and recording processes of the time captured it well.
The songs themselves are less distinguished. They met the demand for ditties that recalled a long lost homeland for a large population of USA immigrants. McCormack made a fortune by meeting this need, so that performing and recording them enabled him to give up the career in opera that he disliked.
These Naxos transfers and remasterings make these very old recordings sound better than in any other incarnation I have ever heard while magically eliminating most of the surface hiss that formerly was so intrusive.

Customer Reviews:
Incorrect.......2006-07-10
The editorial is actually incorrect. It only has "Tumble and Fall" and "Victoria" as the track listing reads. "Victoria" is a brilliant b-side for this single, as its soft like "Tumble and Fall".
If you feel like hearing another song from Feeder, go get it! It's going cheap too...
