2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2001-12-08

this is an excellant cd for who ever likes punk. the quality of the cd is not very good, but the quality of the music is the best from unwritten law as of yet. go out and buy the self-titled and oz factor. buy them all

4 out of 5 stars This is quite a surprise.......2001-12-07

I'm slowly becoming a bigger UL fan. The first cd I got by them was their self titled. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I really liked it. I then picked up Oz Factor, and found myself disapointed with it. There was something about that cd that I didn't like. I thought it was too uneven and never really got to a full potential. A few weeks later, I stumbled across this one by them. I took a risk and decided to pick it up, however, it worked out to my advantage. This is very good cd. It's got an early raw punk style, and while completely different, it's just as catchy as their self titled.

The cd starts off good, with the excellent opener "C.P.K.", and while it does have a couple of dull tracks, it still remains solid and interesting. "Suzanne", a track also on Oz Factor, sounds better on here do to a more punky sound and cleaner guitar work. Other standout tracks are "Kill to Breathe", "Shallow", and "Tribute". There are a few dull ones like "World War III" and "Switch", but they don't bog the pace of the cd down. That is something that destroyed Oz Factor.

So, if you're looking for a raw, good sounding punk cd, "Blue Room" is worth a try. It's different from UL's self titled, but in ways, just as satisfying. Can't wait for their newest one, which comes out early next year.

5 out of 5 stars if you like punk get this.......2001-11-09

i first heard unwritten law when my roomate was playing it and i was blown away. i ran right out and picked up thier self titled cd and wasnt disappointed. since that one was so good i picked up this one and wow itis just as good. since it was made in 1994 the quality isnt the best but that doesnt ruin it at all. if u like thier self-titled cd then pick this one up to. i promise you wont be dissapionted.

5 out of 5 stars C.P.K........2000-06-15

Blue Room is the best UL album by far. It is the true roots of the band if any of you actually knew. This is Poway. I was in C.P.K. Salute the Crazy Poway Kids and the white trash that they're all about. Any true UL fan loves this and OZ Factor more than that new CD. Kailyn? Sure, it's a good song, but that is not what has always defined UL as UL. So, radio junkies, please stop listening to that song and think that UL is the best band in the world. It's the radio. 2 out of 5 stars The best? I think not........2004-01-11

This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."

There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.

1 out of 5 stars can't understand the words.......2004-01-08

Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good bargain........2004-08-25

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

when dave smally left ALL.we all never expected to have him come back with suck a great band of unknows like this .but im very pleased with this relise!! he gives a great effort with this one .pure melodic hadcore at its best.not since dag nasty or maybe allroy sez has dave really drove some great melodic stuff.these songs just get stuck in your head for a long time .and all the songs have some different colours on them also witch makes this even better,so if you like some good old fashion melodic punk to help heal the soul .buy buy buy and if you dont like it just give it to some on who might appeciate something really grand for there collection....................

Scott Garred, frontman for Silver Scooter, is a geek in the best possible way. He's a four-eyed indie kid who quietly courts the spotlight because without it, clubs and bars would be too dark to read in. He's a songwriter who piles meaning upon meaning in lines like "I know you didn't mean nothing / And I know I didn't mean nothing, too," and a singer who challenges listeners to decipher the intentions behind his few vocal changes. On Silver Scooter's third full-length album, The Blue Law, slick, skilled production seamlessly blends his restrained vocals with emphatic rhythms, suggesting that New Order and Paul Simon can safely be numbered among the band's diverse influences. While Garred may be speaking for the foursome's conservative sound when he earnestly sings in the album's opening song, "I know I'm not original," he's also correct when he continues, "or even typical." Silver Scooter plays an almost purist brand of alternative rock, the kind that all but disappeared as whole networks of "alternarock" radio stations were built on the landscape flattened by Nirvana's Nevermind. Rather than redefining the musical terrain, The Blue Law floats above it, asserting that what's good matters, no matter how far it is from what's "in." --Sarah Sternau

4 out of 5 stars not the best, but not bad.......2002-07-26

this band is great. and simple, and pleasant, and easy, and smooth, and engaging, and sometimes exciting. by the time this record rolled around, they had already dropped their masterpiece, ORLEANS PARISH. this one had no hope of topping it, but it's good in and of itself. and we have to love it, because from what i've heard, they've called it quits and this will be the last we hear of them. reason to mourn, reason to buy.

      2 out of 5 stars Meh........2001-04-30

I don't know what I was thinking before. This album champions mediocrity. Three *good* songs harldy make an album worth while.
