Glitter in the Gutter, the third solo album from Jesse Malin, finds the artist settling in to a comfortable groove, further cultivating the power-pop-with-a-touch-of-twang bittersweetness that was a staple of his solo debut The Fine Art of Self-Destruction. Straddling the line between country balladry and guitar rock, Malin gets support from guests Ryan Adams, Jakob Dylan, and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. There's plenty to like in uptempo rockers like "Prisoners of Paradise," and whether or not "Lucinda" was written for alt-country star Lucinda Williams, it wouldn't sound out of place on one of Williams' early records. "Broken Radio" stands out as a Springsteen-like paean to lost youth and rock and roll (the Boss even contributes a duet vocal), and a mournful, piano bar reading of the Replacements' "Bastards of Young" shines a light on the broken-heartedness hiding under the pissed-off teenage posture of the original. Ultimately, there's nothing especially cutting-edge about Malin's ruminations on wrecked romances and world-weary voice, but he has delivered a consistently tuneful and satisfying album. --Ben Heege
Album Description
A raw, modern record of thirteen stellar songs that feels like a celebration of life. Jesse writes about struggles and smiles; about finding ways to "keep on keeping on" with the lyrically intimate slice of life and detail he's known for, while covering a larger palate to connect with people in every part of the world. He conveys happiness and sadness in the same note, using both electric guitars and acoustics, modern keyboards and acoustic piano, power driven drums and happy jangly percussions with driving bass lines and big voice choruses, thus defining the ebb and flow of "Glitter In The Gutter". An energetic, infused, moving record with defiant and exuberant spirit.
Customer Reviews:
Jesse puts it all together.......2007-06-27
After two strong efforts that display his songwriting skills and emerging musicianship, Jesse Malin delivers a tour de force album that fires on all cylinders. No filler here--every song rocks with an urgency and appeal that will grab you and not let go. He mixes it up beautifully, changing tempos from song to song, but keeping the poignant, deeply personal lyrics at a consistently high level.
Things start out strong with "It's a Beautiful Day", which perfectly captures his optimistic-amidst-the-urban-jungle, classic NY rocker point of view which has become his signature. "In the Modern World" is fired by some rough-and-ready Ryan Adams guitar work, and gets the hard-rockin' Richter scale shakin'. "Tomorrow Tonight" slows things down just a touch, and displays Jesse's knack for wistful recollections of youth and while they make us the adults we become, sometimes you just have to let it go and be in the moment. "Broken Radio" gives us the much-discussed Boss duet, and frankly, anyone who doesn't dig this heartfelt ode to rock 'n roll is just missing the point.
Jakob Dylan contributes back-up vocals on "Black-Haired Girl", and we know this only because the liner notes tell us. The song is the real deal, but JD is blown out of the water by Jesse's passionate lead vocal.
There's a great piano and vocal cover of "Bastards of Young", the great Replacements song, a re-make of "Since You're In Love", and various other goodies. None of the weak spots we saw on "Fine Art of Self-Destruction" or "The Heat". I've seen Jesse live three times now, here in Chicago at the Double Door, and each time he shows a stronger mastery of his art as a performer. His current band is his best, and while I miss Christine, Johnny Pi and the other great original band members, this band has the whole NY rock thing going on in spades and they really do kick butt and take numbers. Get yourself out to see Jesse soon: he is growing into a star before our eyes. Catch him in a small club while you can--it is an unparalleled rock experience. (And I've had my share of those!)
Why isn't he famous?.......2007-05-30
This CD is amazing--it's time for Malin to get the radio play he deserves!
Unique Collaboration.......2007-05-12
Jesse is a unique musicaian and sings like it hurts. He has great collaborations with The Boss about the Motor City. Overall the album is well thoughout and assembled and the music is allowed to be itself
Glitter in the Gutter.......2007-05-11
This is an incredible CD from an artist so talanted that it's hard to beleive why he flying under the radar screen. Raw energy, passioante lyrics, and well produced, solid sound with guest appearances from Bruce Springsteen and Jacob Dylan. Jessee has now produced 3 CD's and each one gets better and better. Hopefully, this is his break through disk.
Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Jesse Malin ..........2007-04-14
Third albums have been keys to success for the first two artists mentioned in my title. "Glitter in the Gutter" is so strong, it could do the same for Jesse.
Every one of the 14 songs are completely different, fresh, and totally captivating. He picks you up, slaps you in the face, and puts you back down -- this meaning "listen closely" with the 1-2 punch of "Don't Let Them Take You Down" and "In The Modern World". Also, Jesse clearly didn't settle for status quo on this disc, as so many artists do. Cases in point - "Tomorrow, Tonight" and "Love Streams" are fantastic songs, and so very different from a lot of the other stuff Jesse has recorded and are illustrations of how Jesse is willing to take risks and do something different. "Black Haired Girl" is mentally exciting (just imagine being the guy in the song)and "Prisoners of Paradise" is the song for all you "slaves to the beat".
The entire album is just brilliant. Jesse and the band hit the ball out-of-the-park on this disc! Listening to this record and also being a life-long Springsteen fan, I can't help but draw an interesting parallel ... 32 years ago, when Bruce released Born to Run, his 3rd record, it changed everything. While most of us know how great the Boss' first two records were, it was the 3rd one that opened up a new chapter and changed his career in big ways. I can't help but think in the same way when I listen to "Glitter in the Gutter".
Clearly, "The Fine Art of Self Destruction" and "The Heat" are awesome records and stand on their own merit as great works of art. But when listening to this disc, something tells me that the days of seeing Jesse in small clubs might be numbered (note to those who have always wanted to see him live: DO IT NOW!). This disc has all the potential to springboard him to an entirely different level of public attention. The last line of Thunder Road keeps ringing in my ears..."It's a town full of losers, and I'm pulling out of here to win...."
Congratulations, Gender Bender! Count me in, like Dee Dee Ramone. Listening to this disc is like a "7-Day Weekend" ... keep up the fine art.

They were glam, they were hams, and they made great singles. From "Little Willy" on, they forged a pop sound, always with a sly wink at the audience, never taking themselves too seriously. But when you had songs like "Ballroom Blitz," "Blockbuster," and "Fox on the Run," who really cared if you wore more makeup than a phalanx of runway models? For several years, Sweet could do absolutely no wrong. The remarkable thing is that, some quarter of a century on, the great stuff still sounds as fresh and as fun as it did when everyone wore feather cuts. --Chris Nickson

Sweet is good.......2007-07-08
While I don't know as much about Sweet as the reviewers below seem to, I just wanted to say I originally bought (well, received) this Best of Sweet disc because I had an obsession with "Love Is Like Oxygen" back in the mid 90's (a local Baltimore radio station used to play that song like CRAZY!) Though disappointing to find that it's the short version included here, I believe every other song is the original length. What a GREAT guitar riff that song has, though. Even after all these years I can't seem to get enough of it, or the gloomy vocal melody for that matter. Great stuff.
The rest of the songs on this disc seem to steer clear from any kind of moody atmosphere like "Love Is Like Oxygen" and focus more on having fun with upbeat vocal hooks. I was really surprised that I actually recognized the majority of these songs- some of them I haven't heard in a good 20 years all of a sudden came rushing back memories for me. A really good collection of catchy bubblegum pop songs that will make you feel like rocking out and maybe even dancing.
Very SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-06
Always been a fan of "Love Is Like Oxygen","Little Willy" & "The Ballroom Blitz".Than being a big fan of Def Leppard, opened my eyes more. For those who don't know,Def Lep always points out,Sweet, as an influence in their songs. It does show.I ordered The Best of Sweet and enjoyed it pretty much. Was very familiar with "Action",because Lep covered it. This album has many fun songs that rock and roll. Standouts..."Little Willy","Wig-Wam Bam","The Ballroom Blitz","The 6- Teens","Fox On The Run","Action","Love Is Like Oxygen" & "California Night's". reading the liner notes, was surprised,Sweet sold so many albums, especially overseas. Check this one out,if you are on the verge of buying it. It is a rockin' album!!!!!!!!!!
Great Band.......2007-04-22
Here is one of the best 70's bands.Man they produced some good songs.
They formed in the late 60's or early 70's but statrted to have alot of success in the mid to late 70's.
The band were introduced to the writing partnership of Chinn and Chapman, who were to provide the band with a string of hit singles. However, the band were writing their own hard-rock songs on the b-sides of these hits. This resulted in Chinn/Chapman coming up with heavier pop-rock numbers, most notably the powerful Blockbuster, which reached number 1 in the UK at the beginning of 1973. This group had a glam-rock image and had a succession of Top 10 hits.
Fun Band.......2007-01-08
I had pretty much forgotten this band until I heard the song Ballroom Blitz in a spin class at the Y. This band obviously had a great time making infectious music. Well worth the money.
Junior high in the 70's.......2007-01-06
There was a point in the 70's when it seemed like every radio station in L.A. was playing "Ballroom Blitz," and it was great! Listening to it again as a 40 something adult, it still sounds great! "Little Willy," "Fox on the Run," "Action," all AM radio staples, each 2 plus minutes of pop perfection. C'mon, you remember those songs, so just break down and buy the cd. You won't regret it.

Album Description
In the early 1970s, glam rock band Slade dominated the British charts with 17 Top 20 hits, including six at #1. While their star didn't soar as high in the States, the band wasn't completely overlooked. Covers of "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" by '80s rock band Quiet Riot brought Slade renewed interest. Other bands followed suit with covers by groups as disparate as Oasis, The Runaways and Wonderstuff. Get Your Boots On - The Best Of Slade marks the first time this legendary group sees a domestic greatest hits collection.
Slade had a total of 17 Top 20 hits in the UK.
Slade's songs have been covered by everyone from Oasis to the Runaways but none so familiar in the U.S. as Quiet Riot's hit with "Cum On Feel The Noize" and the hit "Mama Weer All Crazee Now."
Slade's own U.S. chart success peaked in 1984 with their album Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply and the Top 40 singles "My, Oh My" and "Run, Runaway."
Customer Reviews:
Could be a lot better.......2006-11-23
Essentially this collection is Greatest hits through 1975 plus the two American top 40 singles from 1983 slapped on the end. If you like Slade, then obviously this collection is very much incomplete but if you use this CD to get into Slade, then you will probably import some of their other Cd's anyway. The CD is only 60 minutes long so there were lots of missed opportunities to include other music released after 1975 or even include some choice album cuts from the early 1970's. Had I a chance to order this again, I would opt for importing one of the more complete greatest hits collections or gone after the box set. Too bad that Slade Cd's are so hard to find in the US. Those comments aside, the music on the CD is terrific.
ROCK.......2006-11-09
This album is GREAT! I knew I liked Slade, but i hadn't heard some of these songs before. This album made me realize how amazing this band was. Literally. I had no idea these guys were so good.
Great No Frills Rock.......2006-03-15
I had learned about Slade in the early '70's by reading Circus magazine as a kid but never heard them on the radio and couldn't find one of their records. Finally I saw Sladest, bought it and turned all my friends on to it. No big guitar solos, just great fun rock and roll filled with hooks that keep these songs swirling around your brain long after the stereo is turned off. I remember finally seeing them on one of those late night In Concert type of shows and thought they looked very bubblegum with the highest platform boots I had seen. I never liked Quiet Riot and their versions of Slade songs don't have the fun of the originals.
Slayed by Slade.......2006-02-17
Unlike many 'best of'albums, "Get Yer Boots On" is a true compilation of the bands best tracks. There's no rubbish included to make up the numbers on this album, it's all fantasstic Slade hits. It's fast moving and sure to get you dancing or moving to the beat.
Big Bad Kev; - Dusty Radio, Coober Pedy Australia.
Brings it all back (Feel the Noize!).......2006-02-06
A good compilation of (some of) Slade's singles. Slade were a great band based on the fundamental notions of energy, noise, excitement and fun, and it comes through in many of the tracks, particularly the mid-1970s material. Interestingly, the lyrics are able to sketch out a story with very few words (e.g. "G'buy T' Jane"), which beats a lot of rap today.
Only 4 stars because there's only an hour of music on the CD, so 20 minutes is left blank. There was certainly other excellent music that could have been included, not necessarily singles. Sometimes really good tracks are on the albums, yet still get airplay and should go on a compilation (Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down" being but one example). Perhaps it's cut back for the US market (alas).
If you enjoy Rock 'n' Roll with energy and fun, you will probably like this CD a lot.

NO WAY AM I ASHAMED.... THIS IS ROCK!.......2007-04-16
This album will shred up your speakers. Like, it FOOOOKIN RAWKS! Sweet is one of those glam acts of the seventies that sort of drifted away over time, producing a large amount of hits in the seventies, and are only really known these days for a small few. Two of which appear on this album BALLROOM BLITZ and FOX ON THE RUN. If you know those two songs you probably have some idea whats up. Yes, they are a little bit flamboyant at times, but this stuff is crazzzzy, tear it up type stuff, when in the right mood (like-partying loudddd) I can jam this album over and over.
Sadly, the band never really matched the style they went with on this album (which is why I would definately recommend this one over a greatest hits of any sort) .... if the only Sweet song you are familiar with is 1978's Love is Like Oxygen (which is sort of catchy in it's own right, but) you've got the wrong impression. In 1974, this bubblegum group decided to blow up its candy pop fan base and absolutely kick some ace. I totally dig the seventies acid metal feel that is exuberated on this disc in songs like THE 6-TEENS, I WANNA BE COMMITED and SOLID GOLD BRASS... but every song here is a lost gem... so much better than any glam stuff ever produced (ever hear Geordie, the band that Brian Johnsomn was in before he joined ACDC? no, no, no,no).... Sweet... Desolation Boulevard... Go... buy... ROCK... tell 'em Wally Gator sent ya.
If only all CD's could be this good! .......2007-04-02
Well, old-shoolers...we made it this far and this album is still relevent!
Notice all those 5 star reviews? It's because this CD truly deserves it.
This album had great production to begin with and the new copy I bought sounds GREAT. This is hard rock,guitar-driven,with full bass and excellent drumming. The Queen sounding vocal tracks are cool. When I first heard this, it was played between Deep Purple's Machinehead and Zep's Physical Graffiti at a mid-70's party, and the action never slowed down. "A.C.D.C"...what a frickin' riot of a song! Set Me Free,Into The Night,Solid Gold Brass,No You Don't...all of them a rock and roll treat.Buy this, crank it up,and play air-guitar along with it. Way cool, junior!
(oh,yeah...Amazon is giving this to you,at this price)
Ballroom Blitz Me.......2007-03-10
A rockin' good album by Sweet. If you like hard drivin' music that gets you going, then this one will do it for sure.
Has some good glam rock songs, but overall just "ok".......2005-12-30
Sweet is best known for "Ballroom Blitz" from the Wayne's World soundtrack and lesser known for their single "Little Willy". This album pretty much contains two great glam rock songs, "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox On The Run", with the rest being either "ok" or filler. I'll admit that they do a good job making catchy, yet dumb and pointless, songs like "The 6-Teens" and "No You Don't", however it's catchy in a Backstreet Boys kind of way (i.e. forgettable). It sounds pretty dated and thus not really recommended.
Highlights include:
"Ballroom Blitz"
"The 6-Teens" (but barely)
"Fox On The Run"
As good as I remember.......2005-10-20
This CD took 28 years off my age. I became 18 again. This CD is really as good as I remember, and now I know why Sweet was one of my favorite bands back in the 70's. Great drum work, heavy bass and those unique vocal harmonies make Sweet a classic 70's hard rock band. Get this CD instead of other Sweet compliations. The original songs are much better than any of the alternate versions available.

Customer Reviews:
Simply brilliant! Remixes that give the originals a run for their money.......2007-02-02
This release grabs some of Goldfrapp's songs (with heavy emphasis on the "Supernatural") and manages to do the seemingly impossible: songs that actually improve on most of the originals by giving them an extra kick and depth instead of most of the by the numbers bells and whistles that give most remixes a bad name. If you've already Goldfrapp already, then buying this CD is a no brainer. For those who don't, it's hard to explain as it qualifies as electronica, disco, glam rock and is lush/dream-like at the same time. One of the songs from "Spuernatural" has been heavily used in other mediums, such as the promos. those for the last season of the TV show "Nip/Tuck."
I could not believe the quality of the remixes as I am generally not a fan of them as songs tend to get diluted and lose some of their original appeal with a certain generci treatment. All the remixers in this release(which were picked by Goldfrapp) are at the top of their game and have created a world in which you want to shake it until you can't anymore.
I only discovered Goldfrapp a couple of years ago, and while I liked them intially, it was not until this release that I could not get them out of my mind or CD player. I give this an unqualified 5-stars, esp. for Goldfrapp fans. Those who've never heard of them may want to give this a shot, esp. if tired of buying music that is ok but has no urgency or sharp edges.
"We are Glitter" is just GREAT.......2006-10-28
I must tell that I'm picky when it comes about remixes. But We Are Glitter is an exception. Every single song is amazing. My favorite one is Slide In (DFA Remix) I don't care it takes too long, sounds as original as Satin Chic. The remixes of Satin Chic are really good, but in my opinion, any of this is as good as the original version of this song (So sad it wasn't a single). The Lovely 2 CU, You never know, Number 1 and White horse mixes are excellent! And Strict Machine is simply the best. I thought this was going to be the same as the Live CD's edition, but only some parts of this mix were used to extend the original version in their live shows, also it's catchy and, well, is everywhere today!
Putting all together, We Are Glitter is the Best Remixes CD I've ever heard! But you should listen Supernature (My #1 album) before listening We Are Glitter. Every single Goldfrapp material is highly recommended.
Not your average remix CD.......2006-10-25
"We Are Glitter" is a unique compilation of remixes from Goldfrapp's breathtaking album "Supernature," which was released last year. This selection of twelve remixes was selected by the band themselves and contains eleven "Supernature" remixes, plus a new remix of the song "Strict Machine," which is from Goldfrapp's "Black Cherry" album. I was surprised that my favorite song from the "Supernature" album, "Ooh La La," is my least favorite remix on "We Are Glitter." It's not a bad remix by any means, but it's very "clubby" compared to the other tracks, which are all outstanding and truly innovative. Favorite remixes on this album include "Satin Chic," "Lovely 2 C U," and "Number 1," but I seriously love every single track! If you're a new Goldfrapp fan, I advise you to check out "Supernature" before listening to this album...you'll appreciate it much more that way. For die-hard fans like myself, however, "We Love Glitter" is a nice and unexpected treat in between Goldfrapp's major album releases. I love this CD!
Great Complation.......2006-10-23
This is an outstanding complation of the remixes off of 'Supernature.' Also, it includes the new remix of 'Strict Machine', which seems to be everywhere these days! The 'Lovely 2 See U' remix is the best, hands down.
The remix of 'Fly Me Away' is the weakest....the original is the best. There are just some songs you don't remix...'Fly Me Away' is one of them.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Despite songbird Mariah Carey's emotional troubles during the release of the soundtrack to Glitter, she has never sounded giddier. In keeping with the semiautobiographical flick's 1980s time frame, Glitter mines the rich and rhythmic fields of discofied funk and club-friendly jams, and Carey soars on thumping covers of Indeep's "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" (featuring DJ Clue, Busta Rhymes, and New Jack of the moment Fabolous), and Cherrelle's skittish, synth-soaked love song "Didn't Mean to Turn You On," which in a nice touch, is revisited by its production auteurs Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Also well worth a listen is "All My Life," a sweet and nasty Rick James track that finds Mariah looser than she's ever been; it's on those uptempo jams that Mariah is all sass and sex. Unfortunately, she loses the mood on the by-the-numbers ballads, which slow the party down just as it's getting hot. --Amy Linden

a welcome 80's touch .......2007-06-04
I was working in radio in 1990 when I heard Mariah's single "Vision of Love" - it just blew me away. Two of my favorite albums were her first self-titled release and then the followup Emotions album. 80's R&B and pop music's sound really lasted until 1992 when grunge and "angry rap" disgorged upon us and changed music entirely. Seattle bands with heroin addictions and rap stars with firearms were not exactly my cup of tea.
Mariah Carey has reinvented her sound numerous times; I think she's definitely going to be around for awhile for that reason. She certainly has the talent.
In the early 90's there were some unsettling stylistic changes evident on Daydream and Music Box - a kind of self-indulgence although there were enough enjoyable songs to justify the album purchases (I'd recommend the Fantasy extended single by the way - and one definitely overlooked song on Daydream is Daydream Interlude). Butterfly had an upbeat sexy sound and was a very pleasant surprise - and is my absolute favorite album of her music.
Mariah's music took on a different sound after that again on Rainbow and Charmbracelet. Most of the songs sounded either breathy and disjointed or hard with a rap insert - not really a change I liked.
Later on I discovered that right in between those albums had been the soundtrack to Glitter. I owned all the other albums except the Christmas album at that time. In all the bad press about Mariah in those days I had mistakenly overlooked this source of great tunes. I got this one and was pleasantly surprised by the 80's R & B sound. While it's not quite on par with Butterfly or Emotions, in terms of pleasant retro songs you can't really go wrong here. "All My Life" sounds like it could have rolled out in the early 80's - that's my favorite on this album. "...DJ Saved My Life" is a close second and the pleasant Cameo "cameo" on "Loverboy" fits very well (better than my play on words did) to start the 80's theme.
I'm glad to see the "retro" sound return somewhat on Mimi. The rap infusion in her music over the last 10 years doesn't do much for me - it sounds a lot more fitting on extended singles.
I can't believe this was really released on September 11, 2001. That's really odd.
This Glitter is pretty laughable........2007-05-28
Mariah Carey's soundtrack to her first big movie, Glitter is a waste of '80s style pop/ r&b songs. I was such a huge fan of Mariah when she first came out but somewhere along the way she become self-involved with her career releasing album after album, she grew to be pretentious and her incredible voice began to give out. With that said, Glitter is her second weakest album (her worst is the hideous and unlistenable Rainbow). But she does she shines on the ballad, Never Too Far and Reflections. Loverboy is just another take on Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, etc. This soundtrack is anything but inspiring.
MARIAH I LOVE YOU.......2007-02-19
Even though this album was no up to par according to many musical sources, It was a great concept album which still sold 2.5 million worldwide. These rookies that are posioning the music industry couldnt do that in there sleep. Mariah is a veteran and a true artist. She knows how to adapt to the times, and delivery emotion and fun in her music.!!!
Glitter Shines!!! Mariah Shines!!!.......2007-02-02
Mariah has never sounded so better. Her voice is amazing. With that amazing voice she could break glass. Think about it Mariah has just gotten out of a relationship, working 24/7 and her breakdown, plus her album being released on September 11, 2001, everybody forgot because of what hapened and the movie being released 10 days later- September 21, 2001 nationwide. Everybody's home mournig their loss and other peoples loss. Glitter is awesome and so is the movie. Hear are my grades for the song.

wagsmusic.......2006-11-23
I've looked for this for a very long time. One of Sweet's best! I was disappointed to see that "Lady Starlight" was not included in the track list, as it was on the original, after "Cockroach"
They have assumed control........2005-04-16
The band has finally reached their adulthood and now have total artistic control of the finished product. SWEET now write all their songs. This gives them wind under their wings and SWEET soar! You can feel them bubbling with energy in every song in every note. We finally get to answer the age old question; how high can Andy Scott sing! Andy takes it to new heights in "The Lies in Your Eyes" putting the "Bee Gees" best vocal efforts to shame. There's only one way to play this album and that is VERY LOUD. The way it was intended. The only drawback here is (exceptionally) the extras (or lack there of). No demo versions, no previously unreleased material. The 3 extra tracks do not offer any incentive as they add very little to the originals. Personally I would very much have appreciated to have the North American version of "Lady Starlight" added as an extra here. It was included on the North American album and was slightly more "polished" than it's UK predecessor. Oh well, no use crying over Yesterday's Rain ;-) Oh, and another thing, would it have killed them to make a "winking" cover like the original vinyl album? We have the technology...
SWEET loses a star here for the extras not worth the extra bucks and being cheap on the cover...
Should you buy "Give Us a Wink" on CD again? It depends..........2005-02-07
This new UK remaster of "Give Us a Wink" uses the less satisfactory UK running order, which lacks "Lady Starlight"(version 2) which was on the U.S.A. album. The remastering is decent. As for the bonus tracks, you get the 7" single version of "Action"(a different intro, but otherwise the same take as the album version, which featured a longer intro which was spliced on to the same take. What I mean is that the intro on the single version is the orginal, the album version's intro is a revised intro.).The other two bonus tracks are alternate "Munich mix" versions of "Cockroach" & "4th of July",which are essentially alternate takes."Cockroach" features totally different vocals, and "4th of July" a prominent piano, which diluted the song's hard rocking impact. These are similar(but not identical) to the versions heard on the German CD "Platinum Rare".But if you're looking to hear the U.S.A. version of the album, get the Japanese Toshiba/EMI/Capitol CD of the album. That CD reproduces the album cover art(and its' graffiti) in full.

Original Bad Girl.......2007-05-12
Before she was "Leather Tuscadarro" on happy days, before Joan Jett was a "Runaway" there was Suzi Quatro, "Bad ***, Bad Girl, Bass *******, Rock Chick". More popular in Europe than America, my brother saw her in Germany and I saw her in Bakersfield with Alice Cooper, during the "Welcome to My Nightmare" tour. I instantly fell for her bad girl anthem "Your Mamma Wont Like Me" and recently feeling nostalgic, I have listened to her greatest hits several times this year. Although you can't say that her stuff is on par with the great music of the seventies, it does have a certain appeal, especially in this overdubbed, synthesized music era.
If you don't know Suzi Quatro, be advised, she is more "Elvis", than say, "Heart" or "Hole", and more rock-a-billy, than classic rock. But she did fill her own niche.
not bad.......2006-02-08
This album contains some good music, but really, most of the songs are just filler. "Devil Gate Drive" is top notch, "Can The Can" and several others are pretty good, but your CD remote will come in handy for skipping a lot of the music.
Nostalgia at its best.......2000-09-12
Looking over the titles you instantly remember those hits which were top ten hits, starting with Suzi's distinctive raunchy, rough around the edges 'first hits'. Can the Can, and 48 Crash, Devil Gate Drive and so on. But listening to all the other tracks on this nostalgic CD you begin to realize she actually did have a 'good' singing voice. I was pleasantly surprised to suddenly start remembering (and hearing) all the other 'great' songs she performed besides the early hard rock tunes. I purchased this CD with the intent of only listening to maybe three or four tracks, and ended up being captivated by all the tracks. For me, money well spent.

Album Description
2006 digitally remastered reissue of this 1972 album by the British Glam/Rock superstars featuring five bonus tracks: 'My Life Is Natural', 'Candidate', 'Wonderin' Y', 'Man Who Speeks Evil' and 'Slade Talk To Melanie Readers'. By the time that the 'Slayed?' album arrived in September 1972, Slade had scored their third British No.1 single with 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now', which was included on side two of the LP. 'Slayed?' has been called "music to wreck concert halls to", and it's a description that few familiar with it would choose to refute. Aside from 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' and 'Gudbuy T'Jane', the latter a No. two hit in November '72, it was swelled by self-penned nuggets like 'How D'You Ride' and 'The Whole World's Goin' Crazee', plus covers of Janis Joplin's 'Move Over' and 'Let The Good Times Roll' by Shirley Goodman & Leonard Lee, both of which were regulars in their live repertoire. New Musical Express hailed 'Slayed?' as "one of the greatest rock 'n' roll releases ever," and it remains one of the band's best-loved long players. Crank up the volume and go crazee!. Slavo.

Slayed?.......2007-05-13
Noddy and the boys at the top of their glam-rock game. This album was a breath of fresh air in 1972, when all the US had to offer was dross. Bonus tracks like My Life Is Natural make this CD a real bargain. RRR
REMASTERED AT LAST.......2006-10-24
For the first time ever remastered and re-released with 4 bonus tracks (4 singles b-sides appear on CD for the first time ever on official release. The correct label is SALVO (not SLAVO) which is a new British label and the batch of three Slade's re-releases is the first CDs this label ever released. Sound quality is better than on old regular issue of this famous 1972 album released on CD way back in 1991 on Polydor. Contains a very beautiful and informative booklet with lots of unseen colour snaps including covers of their singles released in different countries and nice essay written by Classic Rock Magazine man Dave Ling. Highly recommended for all Slade fans. You may at last replace your old CD with this one ! The slipcase also inserted into additional paper jacket wich adds nothing to the release itself becauce it exactly repeats what is already shown in the booklet. From the other hand if somebody wants this album in paper jacket as mini-LP version try to find this only in Russia. I now own both versions.
