Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Long known as the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, this venerable gospel institution has seen its ranks fluctuate in recent years. Rarely, however, have the soul-stirring harmonies of the group, recording here as a quartet, benefited from such stellar support. Producer John Chelew (best known for John Hiatt's breakthrough Bring the Family) has enlisted guitarists David Lindley and John Hammond, bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome, and harmonica ace Charlie Musselwhite for a set that celebrates the bluesy underpinnings of gospel.

The selection of material mixes the traditional spirituals the group has been performing for more than a half century ("Nobody's Fault but Mine," "Motherless Child") with soulful readings from the more contemporary songbooks of Tom Waits, the Rolling Stones, and Ben Harper. Harper's "Give a Man a Home" receives a majestic vocal from Clarence Fountain, while the album's most audacious cut pairs the lyrics to "Amazing Grace" with the melody from "House of the Rising Sun." --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album.......2007-06-13

They just have amazing voices. There are two Tom Waits songs on the album; and while i'm a big fan of Tom Waits, sometimes it's hard to hear how to sing his songs yourself. The Boys bring out their musicality in a way that's accessible for everyone - i can sing those songs in the shower now! ;) Great album!

5 out of 5 stars Blind Boys are Great!.......2007-01-11

I was not really familiar with the Blind Boys until I purchased this CD. I love their old-time blue-zy style and plan to purchase more of their music.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a big gospel fan to enjoy this.......2006-02-11

The Blind Boys reach out here to broaden their base beyond the traditional gospel fan. They start out by covering material by the Rolling Stones (I just wanna see his face from Exile On Main Street), Tom Waits, and others. They add some mainstraem guest stars to further broaden the appeal. There's blues, rock, soul here all blended together expertly.
This won a number of awards and deservedly so. I'm sure there's many people who didn't realize that they can enjoy gospel music until they listened to this.

5 out of 5 stars You'll fall in love with the Blind Boys after listening to this CD.......2005-09-23

If you weren't already in love with the Blind Boys, you will fall in love with them and their music after listening to this CD.

Prior to hearing this, I wasn't a gospel fan, and wasn't really sure what my reaction would be. Since I bought this CD I have purchased about five others by the Blind Boys - and while they're all superb, this one is my favorite.

It's hard to pick favorite songs on this CD, although, "Run on for a Long Time," "Soldier," and "The Last Time" are a few. You'll find a lot of variety here, from uptempo tracks to more solemn and slow songs.

You might also recognize "Way Down in the Hole" as the opening track from HBO's series "The Wire."

Having toured with Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Peter Gabriel, the Blind Boys have earned their place in mainstream music culture, but maintain the traditional sounds that appeal to audiences around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2004-11-15

I saw the Blind Boys of Alabama for the first time on Austin City Limits, singing "Amazing Grace." I remember being completely drawn in at the harmony and the rendition, as it sounded almost like a chain gang. The beginning cadence sounds a bit like "The House of the Rising Sun," but you forget about that once the vocals start in. The rest of the CD is equally moving. I've read other reviews claiming goosebumbs, tears, etc. -- my sentiments exactly. Bravo.

I heard a new song of their's (equally fabulous) on the radio a few days ago but suppose the CD has not yet been released -- I'm waiting!

Director Curtis Hanson chooses a lineup of vintage rock and R&B for the musical side of his screen adaptation of Michael Chabon's brilliant Wonder Boys. Foremost is Bob Dylan, who contributes a new rocker, "Things Have Changed," as well as cuts from Blood on the Tracks, Oh Mercy, and Time Out of Mind. These 13 cuts do a fine job of limning Michael Douglas's lead character's confusion, regret, and weary-to-the-bone ambivalence. Smartly sequenced--soul giants Little Willie John and Clarence Carter fit perfectly alongside the likes of Dylan, Lennon, Van Morrison, and Neil Young--Wonder Boys the album is a stellar example of hand-in-glove movie-music supervision. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonder Boys.......2006-11-10

Incredible mix of some of the best tunes (in my mind) -- especially the Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan cuts. Now this is music from my younger era, but it was recommended to me by my 20-something-year-old daughter!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movie soundtracks..........2005-10-17

This CD contains four Bob Dylan songs, so how can you go wrong? I initially bought this disc for "Things Have Changed", which is a great song, but was instantly impressed with "Shooting Star" which I had never heard before but liked instantly. It was great to hear Dylan play harmonica on a newer song. This soundtrack is a showcase for songwriters: Van Morrison, Neil Young, Tom Rush, and Leonard Cohen are all featured. The really great thing was that some blues/R&B songs were thrown in for good measure. The Clarence Carter and Little Willie John classics make this a VERY enjoyable collection. This is one of the best movie soundtracks out there and contains NO filler. If you like good music you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars great collection for grown-ups..........2004-11-29

Great movie and a great soundtrack! This is actually a great collection for grown-ups...Van Morrison, John Lennon, Leonard Cohen, Clarence Carter, Little Willie John, Tim Hardin, Neil Young, Tom Rush, Buffalo Springfield, and four songs by Bob Dylan including the Oscar winning "Things Have Changed". It's also made of all strong album cuts...the only two hits being "Old Man" and "Watching The Wheels".

5 out of 5 stars like a coin that won't get tossed, rollin' home to you.......2003-10-14

Length - 52:10
Just look at the names on this album. Just look at them! Neil, John, Van, Bob and Leonard all on one emotional hodgepodge of sadness, despair, longing, joy and love. This is an incredible soundtrack to an incredible movie. The word "classic" is rarely pertinent when speaking of soundtracks of recently released movies, but for the Wonderboys Soundtrack, classic is an understatement. I really love this album, and if you enjoy any of the artists listed above, I think you will too. See the movie, hear the soundtrack, long may you run. Recommended to all.
(For people who enjoyed this record, try The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack too. It's equally rewarding.)

5 out of 5 stars A fine collection of tunes for a great little movie.......2003-02-18

My mom wanted a copy of this, because our neighbor Margo would listen to it when they visited each other, and the music was very good. Margo has great taste in music, so I had to get a copy. Get yours soon, because soundtracks tend to go out of print real fast unless the movie is a real blockbuster. Although this was an excellent people movie, it has not been rated as a blockbuster and most of the people I know haven't heard of it.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome...hardcore, startling rap music (4.5/5).......2006-12-10

The Geto Boys 1991 album "We Can't Be Stopped" is a great listen. It is one of the albums that pioneered both gangsta rap and southern rap. They were the first rap act to gain national attention from Texas, and the Houston trio of Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill also helped gangsta rap reach the mainstream. However, this album is often forgotten today, eclipsed by albums from their contemporaries like NWA. I think this album shows the Geto Boys at their controversial best. Later on in their careers the group would embrace a different sound, but this album is simple, in your face, angry hip hop. Over fourteen tracks, the Geto Boys challenge mainstream America, dealing with such topics as war, poverty, and ghetto hostilities. They create stunningly violent and crazy depictions of ghetto life and paranoia, and the way in which they voice their problems and concerns was never duplicated. All three MCs have distinctive and compelling characters. Scarface is a lyrical master, one of the greatest rappers of all time, a voice of the ghetto who has lived through everything. Willie D is a wild, angry man who often sounds crazy. Bushwick Bill is one mad midget, who is not afraid to lash out at government and power and is behind all of the group's horrorcore. Production is very simple, utilizing rough and raw drumbeats and bass and sparse instrumentals and sampling to create a focused musical sound. It has a gritty, underground feel. One of hip hop's finest songs, the legendary "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me," makes this album worth the purchase alone. This album is simply entertaining from start to finish. "We Can't Be Stopped" is a compelling, fun listen that I recommend to all rap fans.

After the introductory "Rebel Rap Family," the album begins with "We Can't Be Stopped," a song of which the title explains it all. Scarface, Willie, and Bushwick spit threatening and boastful lyrics depicting their personas and characters. "Homie Don't Play That" is great, just fun and entertaining gangsta rap. "Another N.... in the Morgue" tells of murder and crime in the city, more of the greatness Geto Boys executed that countless rappers would attempt to imitate over the years. "Chuckie" is one of the most effective songs, a disturbing story of a serial killing maniac in the ghettos of Houston. The crazy effect is enhanced by the laidback tone that the MCs use in their raps. The previously mentioned "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me" is one of the most amazing songs you'll ever hear. Musically it is perfect, using a thoughtful, gorgeous sample from an Isaac Hayes song to make it totally their own. It perfectly matches their tales of ghetto paranoia, a terrified mindset brought on from years of living in poverty and violence. The song is effective and beautiful and will never get old. Bushwick Bill rips "I'm Not a Gentleman," where he talks about the way he treats women and goes about his business over a great beat. On "Gotta Let Your Nuts Hang," the boys rap in the second person perspective about dealings and criminology. "F... a War" is one of my favorites on the album. After a great intro, the Geto Boys condemn the Gulf War and urban youths joining the military, with a great rallying cry ("I ain't goin' to war for no s...-talkin' president!"). "Ain't With Being Broke" has an excellent funky beat and chorus, speaking simply of the downsides of being poor. "Quickie" is a song of conversations to women, talking about how they don't want any long term relationships, just quick pleasure. "The Other Level" follows in the same vein as "Quickie." "Trophy" is another of my favorites, ending the album on an excellent note. The song talks about how the best rap acts aren't recognized with Grammys and awards, only respect in the hood, and the Geto Boys demand a trophy, it's funny and angry like always.

Overall, "We Can't Be Stopped" is an awesome rap album, in my mind among the Geto Boys' very finest. It's amazingly consistent and always entertaining. Geto Boys are a rap group that every hip hop fan should know and this album is a great starting point. This album is one I highly recommend to every rap fan, it's one of the pioneering old-school works that is by now a standard, regardless of how overlooked it is today.

5 out of 5 stars Office Space.......2006-11-14

Odd one of the best old school rap soundtracks is in a movie with a bunch of white guys and a middle eastern guy. I dont think i can ever hear Die Mother F&$(ers without thinking of that copy machine destroying scene. Some white boys still know what good rap music is.

5 out of 5 stars Answer.......2006-03-13

Its "Hung Up On My Baby" by Issac Hayes. and yea its for "My Mind Playin Tricks".

4 out of 5 stars True Hardcore S**T.......2006-02-10

If you want good, angry, hard old school hip-hop, then The Geto boys should be right up your alley. Like other reviewers said, these guys are for real, and they probely laugh at guys like 50 and D-12. They have such an edge, that even though some of it is a bit sloppy at times, it is 100% from the heart, and its a great listen for hip-hop heads. If you see a midgets eye hanging out on the cover, that would be Bushwicks Bill eye that got a bullet in it from his girlfriend. When they were in the ER, they thought they should take a picture of it hanging out, and put it on their album cover. NEEDless to say, some record retailers banned the LP, and this even fueled the Geto Boys hate even stronger. This is one hard CD and not to be missed.

Even as the Cash Money clique continues to twist its formula just enough to keep its singles intriguing, Master P's No Limit posse seems unable to move off the cheesy-production-and-gangsta-cliché tip. Goodfellas' most notable track, the single "Wobble Wobble," praises the female posterior with none of the charm of Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up," which may still be in heavy rotation on the Box when the 504 Boyz's next lame album appears. As for the rest of this one, the group's gruff but monotonous rhyming on the likes of "If You Real, Keep It Real," "Roll, Roll," and "Beefing" makes the thug life sound more boring than finishing school and getting a good job somewhere off the streets. --Rickey Wright

Good voices and good musicians, but absolute tripe. Unbridled vulgarity, racism, obscenity, and juvenile posturing. If this piece of trash has any redeeming social value, it escapes me. Is it a reflection of the society that produced it? Only if we are ignorant animals without a speck of morality. Shameful.

Ok I am from Louisiana and I am going to say that real recognize real and this cd is tight but overrated and if it wasn't for Mr. Magic then this cd that I have now would of been in the trash can. There are about 4 songs that are good on this entire cd. It is good but not great so it doesn't deserve 4 stars. Somebody need to go to college and take Hip Hop 101 because it is obvious that yall are the same people who thinks Dike Jones is tight.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE!! 38 SPECIAL AT ITS FINEST.......2007-07-11

Aside from the killer classic "Hold On Loosely", this album kicks some serious butt with "First Time Around", "Hittin and Runnin" and Bring It On. These songs make me smile and tap my feet. Brings back great memories from my wilder days. Needs to played at high volume. Don Barnes' lead vocals give me chills.

5 out of 5 stars ROCK YOU UNDER THE TABLE!.......2006-01-19

FIVE STARS AFTER DRINKING WHISKEY!!!!!!!!!!
.38 SPECIAL were the southern rock band that made it into the eighties with numerous hit songs. Fronted by Donnie Van Zant, the brother of Skynyrds Ronnie Van Zant, these guys were a hard rockin' tail chasin' bar band, that really cooked up some hot chops. Not as kick ass as Skynyrd, but what kind of a*hole compares. They have a totally different sound. Actually, they are closer to sounding like Journey than they are like Skynyrd, but I love this stuff, when I'm way drunk at the bar. I like to select this album on the Online Jukebox, especially if theres a fine looking floozy bendin' over the pool table. HOLD ON LOOSELY, they always start shakin' it! BACK ALLEY SALLY is a sure fire pleaser too! The title track and pretty much the whole thing is good. ROCK AND ROLL!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix of Southern and Melodic Rock.......2003-11-17

.38 Special's fourth album in 1981 excellently blends southern rock vibe with melodic hard rock. Jim Peterik known as Survivor's keyboardist and songwriter was instrumental in adding melodic hard rock vibe penning HOLD ON LOOSELY which became their first major hit and FANTASY GIRL second single which became a minor hit. Jim Peterik also co-wrote HITTIN' AND RUNNIN' and WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYS, the title track. HOLD ON LOOSELY is one of my all time favorite songs among the excellent songs Jim have created so far including Survivor. At the latter part Lynard influenced nice southern rock can be tasted. Essential for early 80s pop rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars .38 Special's Second Great One In A Row.......2002-09-23

WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS was .38 Special's second great album in a row. The first two cuts- "Hold On Loosely" and "First Time Around", as well as "Hittin' And Runnin'"- are downright cautionary in their lyrical content; the title track is pure boogie heaven; and "Fantasy Girl" is simple Southern pop-rock. A few songs are filler, but the great ones make this album worthy of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars .38 before they sold out.......2000-09-08

This CD has the classic .38 Special sound before they went top 40. Nothing fancy here---just some good old southern rock 'n roll. "Hold on Loosely" is hands down the best song they have ever recorded.

There are 3 genres of music I really hate with a passion, and that is punk, rap, and indie rock. Rap generally consists of a pontificating, sanctimonious black man (and occasinoally a white one) talkin' about how rap is music from the streets. At first, it was. Rap came out of Compton/South Central L.A. in the 80's in protest of the poverty and crime there. But then it turned into music in which we hear how big rappers' c**ks are, how much money they got, how many ho's they got, how much they can swear, and how nobody better mess with them. Rarely do I hear rap get truly political. The Geto Boys epitomize rap here. They have several examples of songs that I talked about. They have the song where they swear a lot and tell people not to mess with them (F**k 'em, with lyrics by an uncredited Oliver Stone, who wrote the screenplay for Scarface, and who The Geto Boys use quite liberally throughout the song), they have the song about how many ho's they have (Gangster of Love, which samples Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd), a song where they fantasise about killing (Mind of a Lunatic), and one real political song (City Under Seige). Now, sometimes when you hear rap stuff at first, it gives an awesome visceral kick, and this album does that. Gangster of Love is reminiscent of 2 Live Crew, except much more brutally funny (or misogynistic, depending on your gender or outlook on life). But the visceral kick rapidly fades, and you're left with a boring, pointless, beat heavy, profanity contest that really has little or no art in it. The Geto Boys played the "censorship" card really well (acting like their music was being censored because of the man and the "politics" of the man), where in all likelihood it was kept off the radio because of the barrage of profanity and generally in your face attitude of The Geto Boys. So, it's funny and visceral the first time, but the high doesn't last. The album never resonates beyond the first few listens, like most rap albums I've had.

5 out of 5 stars Deadly as an A bomb.......2006-12-13

I had almost forgotten that I had this record, but one recent day, feeling particularly incensed, I remembered it and dug it out. Singing along to f#@* `em, I found myself already feeling much better. The last time I played that track so loud was many years ago when I threw in the towel and walked out of a job, and this time round it had the same highly therapeutic effect. By the time Assassins came on, I had abandoned the idea of becoming one, as my rage had abated, having been absorbed by this first class record, which is as incredible today as when it was first released in 1995. It has some of the catchiest gangsta rap tunes you will ever hear.

As other reviewers have noted, this record is the polar opposite of sweet and the lyrics are seething with anger, nastiness and good 'ol fashioned sexism, although they should not be taken entirely seriously. Still, if you are feeling homicidal, they hit the spot. It is the perfect antidote to a bad day.

Play it loud and feel your troubles and deadly thoughts melt away. Far cheaper than therapy, and beats a murder rap.

5 out of 5 stars It Set The Standard.......2006-03-22

Nothing really compares. Okay, well maybe early NWA. Still, this album holds up some 16+ years later. Rick Rubin heard most of the tracks from their 1989 Rap-A-Lot debut "Grip It On That Other Level", had a not-so-known Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine) and Sylvia Massy (Tool) remix it, and the result was one of the best rap albums to this day. The controversy that followed resulted in Rubin being forced to have it distributed by parent company WEA (as Geffen refused to do so).

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest, vilest records ever made.......2006-03-15

The guitarist from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs put it like this: 'In times of indecision, I often think to myself "What would Bushwick Bill do?" Usually I do the opposite because the midget rapper from this crew has been shot in the face and I haven't. Yet.'

That about sums it up. In Dublin in the 1980s, if you were a middle-class suburban teenager (and I'm afraid that in those days it pretty much went without saying that you were a white M.-C. S.T.), you either liked U2 or you didn't. If like me you didn't, then outside of your brother's vintage heavy metal collection there were few signs of life; a lot of rubbish pop music, some big-hair poodle-rock bands, and not a lot else. But then a cousin lent me this album, and at last I saw the light.

The Geto Boys were and for all I know still are not necessarily anyone you'd want to hang out for an evening with, if only because of the risk of gunfire or your girlfriend putting your eye out, but good god could they make a noise. I used to put this on my walkman and play it to people at my school to make them go away. 'Triggy Happy Nigga' is the one I played to death, but 'Gangsta of Love' is without doubt the funniest. One day, long in the future, my kids will play me something that they think is going to offend me, and I'll play them this back. And we'll be quits.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST RAP ALBUM OF ALL TIME!.......2006-03-09

NO CONTEST! The Geto Boys self-titled album is the greatest rap album I've ever heard. This album came out right around the time The 2 Live Crew were getting a bunch of hassles about the explicit language they were using. The Geto Boys pushed the envelope even further with this obscene, hilarious, and brutal album! They not only paved the way for other rap artists to express themselves more freely (more cussing) they busted a cap in censorship at the same time! The songs are unbelievable..."Gangster Of Love" had me in hysterics! "F*** 'Em" simply blew my mind! BUY THIS ALBUM AND PURCHASE A PIECE OF GANKSTA HISTORY!

The fact that this has been released to CD is excellent. I purchased the original vinyl years ago. Just to have clear music is a joy. This is the essential Blind Boys. Of all their albums, this is my favorite. A MUST HAVE!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music... poor packaging........2001-11-04

MCA Records Special Products division should be disgusted with themselves for sparing all expenses in presenting this album of great music. All there is is a front cover and a blank piece of paper... no credits...
But the music is sensational - whether you are into gospel or not. The Blind Boys are an incredible talent

The Geto Boys have succeeded in cornering the 14 year-old "Icy Hot Stunta" segment, as evidenced by the tone and tenor of the other reviews.

This album merits five stars because of its success in liberating dollars from suburban adolescents everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Generally excellent........2007-01-21

The Blind Boys get help from David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), Billy Preston, and Charlie Musselwhite on this release - not that they need it, but wow, what players. There is great, authentic stuff here. A particular standout is the atmospheric "Demons", a memorable production. (Yes, it includes guest rappers The Gift of Gab, but I'm 53 and I STILL like it, so......)

In a way, I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, because two cuts feel like filler. Still, it's easy to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars cool gospel blues retro supersized wonder.......2006-06-05

If you like Gospel music and I mean real Gospel music you know what I mean, that Southern Black deep in the roots and heart of christianity seated in that deepest area of faith coming from the soul kind of Gospel music, then you really need to listen to this album, of course if you are into that kind of Gospel then you already know who The Blind Boys of Alabama are. the title track is wonderful in how it takes a fear of the Atom Bomb the way it was to the people in the late 40's and the 50's when people were building fallout shelters in their yards and schools started having drills for nuclear blasts and turns it into a worship of god. They also do a cover version of Eric Clapton's "Presence of the lord" that is way cool.

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2006-05-23

Not my taste, but not saying others wouldn't like it. To me, the singing sounds like a group of drunken hobos singing around a trashfire.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is in my auto CD player right now!.......2006-01-20

Even if you aren't into gospel music, you will like this CD.
A little Blues, a lot of funk. I have played this cd over and over and will be purchasing more of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

5 out of 5 stars Gospel+Blues+Soul+Funk+Rap+Rock = SPECTACULAR!!!.......2005-05-07

I listened to this CD at one of those "listening stations" in a record store-- and bought it 15 minutes later! (...even though I had to scrounge in my pockets for my last 13 bucks.) It hasn't been off my rotation since. I'd never heard of these guys before, never really listened to so-called Gospel music before-- honestly, virgin ears. But.... wow! Spectacular.

For those coming from other musical regions (I myself am partial to blues,) or for those who never considered "Gospel" before, I beg you, give this album a try. While this album is broadly defined as "Gospel" there is so much more musically here. There is Gospel, of course, but also a healthy dose of blues (Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica), a hint of funk, a sprinkling of soul, a new interpretation of rock (Clapton, Norman Greenbaum), and one (surprisingly effective) nugget of rap--- all stirred with a soul-nourishing positive vibe, and filtered through the Blind Boys' unique musicality.

This is a very special and magical brew that will bring you up and leave you there, even after the music stops.

Give it a try!

Exceptional in every way, the Blind Boys of Alabama's Christmas record is a must have for Christmas music fans of all ages and musical persuasions. Go Tell It on the Mountain features the legendary gospel group singing with some of the most renowned artists in the music world who share gospel, R&B and folk roots. Thirteen tracks deep, every song is a gift, offering such compelling new arrangements and dynamic vocal performances of traditional hymns, carols and mistletoe pop standards that some will seem like you're hearing them for the first time. With guest stars such as Solomon Burke, Tom Waits, Shelby Lynne, Chrissie Hynde, Aaron Neville, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, the immortal jazz man Les McCann and others, it's impossible to list all the highlights. Suffice to say, the blistering blues-funk rendering of "Away in a Manger" with George Clinton, Robert Randolph and the Blind Boys, along with a smoldering duet of "The Christmas Song" by Shelby Lynne and Clarence Fountain from the group, will have you shoutin' from the mountaintop again and again. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Xmas CDs out there - unless you don't like good music.......2006-12-12

This CD is heartfelt and unique, with great instrumentation and good production and has a nice sampling of guest artists. But overall the Blind Boys voices are what makes it shine. They really make the songs thier own - even the ones you've heard a thousand times before - and THIER versions will stick in your head all season long.
The GREAT majority of reviewers give this CD 5 stars and many others give it 4 stars. But there are 3 or 4 people bringing the overall rating down by giving the CD 1 or 2 stars. Please ignore those reviews. One of those reviewers said the CD was overproduced and too polished, yet another reviewer said they must have used the first take on every track implying the recordings are sloppy? Contradictory and unfounded. Just click on the track samples right here on Amazon and listen - is it what you expected?
Folks, if you love the Blind Boys and/or love Christmas music with an original R&B twist (R&B in the true old-school sense of the word, not the way the phrase "R&B" is used today), then this CD is for you. If you have any idea what you're buying before you purchase (and these days it's hard not to), then buy it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This one's going to be a classic.......2005-12-21

Let me add my voice to the praise for this album. I've heard numerous versions of most of these songs and "Blind Boys" have just reset my ultimate covers for both "Go Tell it on the Mountain" and "In the Bleak Midwinter" just to name a few. Admittedly, this review is posted too late for you to get this CD for this Christmas, but trust me you will very much be enjoying the songs on this album throughout the year.

5 out of 5 stars A bluesy gospel Christmas album with special guests.......2005-11-14

I had not heard any music by this group prior to borrowing a copy of this album - however, this is an excellent Christmas album. As you would expect from a gospel group, they focus almost exclusively on the religious aspect of the festival, the sole exception being White Christmas. There is a different guest singer on each track except the opening and closing tracks, which are without guests.

With any album featuring a variety of guests, one's favorites depend to some extent on one's opion of the various guests. For example, my favorite guest is Shelby Lynne, who does a fine duet of The Christmas song - however, it's not quite my absolute favorite track. That distinction goes to Chrissie Hynde singing In the bleak midwinter, almost as a solo track with the group providing backup harmony. It is one of my favorite carols and I get the impression that it is more popular in Britain than in America, where it turns up occasionally on Christmas albums (this one included) but is by no means common. Other favorites include I pray on Christmas (a cover of a Harry Connick Jr song featuring Solomon Burke), Born in Bethlehem (with Mavis Staples), Little drummer boy (with Michael Franti) and Joy to the world (with Aaron Neville).

This is an album with plenty of variety - they put plenty of energy into Last month of the year (no guests) and Go tell it on the mountain (with Tom Waits), which provide plenty of contrast with the slower songs.

If you are looking for a bluesy gospel Christmas album, this is certainly a good one to choose.

5 out of 5 stars Shout It From The Rooftops!.......2005-07-25

"Go Tell It On The Mountain"! . . . The Blind Boys Of Alabama present us all with their gifts of "Gold Frankinsence, and Myrrh" in spirit and sound. Every track on this cd is a true "gem" and will stand the test of time to last for generation after generation of listeners . . . it is 'classic" in that it defies the fads of time . . . no matter your age or musical taste preferences, these true musical artists will touch a chord in your soul that only "spiritual gospel" can stricke and resound . . .these singers create spiritual harmonics is your soul and heart.

The Christmas season is special . .and in truth it is all too short . . . but there ARE several "christmas albums" which i listen to and enjoy throughout the year, regardless of the month or season or "temperature on the thermometer": the one is The New Christie Minstrels' "Merry Christmas" . . . another John prine's Christmas album . . . and now, "Go Tell It On The Mountain" by The Blind Boys Of Alabama! :)

Don't wait for the holiday season to near to get a copy of this album . . . and don't delay until the department stores begin decorating with reindeers and snowflakes . . . get it now . . get it anytime of the year . . and put it on your cd player and just let their soulful harmonies engulph you in wave after wave until you find yourself a part of the flow . . . you will find it's Christmas all year long . . every day . . . and if you're like me, you'll go out and get yourself more and more albums by these men who have "real talent" . . "real abilities" . . and "real gifts" . . .

I give my thanks to The Blind Boys of Alabama for this album and for all of their recordings . . . American . . and "world" music . . . owes them a debt of gratitude for the treasures they have created and made permanent on recording after recording . . . long after these men have departed . . and long after all of us have vacated this world, these tracks will be listened to and appreciated and enjoyed by countless not yet born . . .and THEY TOO will be grateful to The Blind Boys Of Alabama for leaving these tracks behind . . .

I hope that they record many many more albums yet to come . . . but for now, i am happy to have this "Christmas All Year" album from them, "Go Tell It On The Mountain"! :)

2 out of 5 stars Overproduced by WAY too many not so special guests..........2004-12-19

The Blind Boys of Alabama sound spectacular on this cd, and the gospel combo backing them up is exellent, the songs are also great, and the Boys' harmonies are swinging, however the special guests(who are mostly not so special) wiegh this projest down. There is a great version of 12th Month of The Year, Go Tell it on the Mountian and The Christmas Song with jazz piano great Les McCann. Otherwise there are too many soul r&b type artists who don'tconform well to the Boys' ad thier gospel, blues jazz style. Aaron Nevelle completely ruins several songs, with his feminine wimpy whining, and many singers rap thier way thru songs. Too many doo wop-ish guest stars water this down. Too bad the producers here went so commercial.
