Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Just what you would expect.......2007-05-19

I was looking for a CD of exclusively Bach music, not necessarily played by a famous artist or orchestra. This had a lot of his well-known pieces and was exactly what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

5 out of 5 stars Like Floating On A Cloud.......2006-09-20

My first real appreciation of this sound was from watching the film "Slaughterhouse Five" in the theater, back in the '70s. That soundtrack was just a taste of what you get with this recording. My family pops this CD in the car stereo on long trips, and glide down the highway to some original smooth grooves. Helps the miles pass swiftly. Music for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Bach.......2006-08-27

Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how contented those sounds make her feel. Nobody can say why they move her so, any more than we can say why they move us so. If we knew the answer to that one, we'd copy the guy. But anyway, she loves the music, and don't you dare make a sound such as squeaking your computer chair. If you do, her golden orbs will open, fix upon your face, and shame you. Yes they will. But if you are quiet long enough, you can watch a little calico sleep, with the very same sweet kitten face that drew you to her five years ago. Bach is gooooood.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD, especially for novices.......2005-10-12

I was looking for a recommended Bach CD - certain music by a certain orchestra - and stumbled on this. It is an excellent choice for a new library. I think when there was more than one movement to a piece, it would have made more sense to go ahead and keep the movements together instead of separating them, but a novice listener would not notice. A great way to become exposed to a great composer.

5 out of 5 stars I should have bought two...........2007-06-17

This is my favorite album from Blue October. I love the music and with the exception of the first track....I love every song! I have this CD in my Car and am playing the heck out of it...I just wish that I had bought a second one for my CD player at Work. Edgy,Angry,Catchy..you name it this CD has it....I love this Band.

5 out of 5 stars Blue October is an amazing group.......2007-05-30

I own all three of their albums and every one is absolutely amazing. Everything about them is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Just love it!.......2007-05-29

So I fell in love with Blue October when my roommate would try to use it as an alarm. I enjoyed their new c.d. so much I decided I needed to try to collect all the previous c.d.'s as well. One song in particular on Consent to Treatment--Balance Beam--really stood out to me as a similar sound to their newer songs. This c.d. is a solid mix of their older sound and an excellent stand point to see how well this band has developed and evolved until now.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to your Blue October Collection But................2007-05-16

I would have given this album a 3 when compared to there others. But I tried not to. But if you are going to only get one or two. Get "Foiled" and "History for Sale".

But this album has some really good content in it. It has alot of "Loner" feel to it. Break-up songs. Make-up songs. This album has alot to it. Hard, soft, and just feel good music. The bad and good in life is all here. But it just is not very well put together. Some songs seem like filler songs to what could have been a 5 star rating.

With songs like "Independently Happy" portraying an medicine for a socially troubled, lonely person. And depressing attidudes found in "Schizophrenia". Many feelings in this album are great. Wheather good or bad. One doesn't exist with the other right?

Great music here.

4 out of 5 stars Consent for Treatment - Blue October.......2007-01-09

Excellent album. These guys just keep getting better and better with their follow up albums. This is the best new band I have heard in a long time. Thanks for offering this product. It was a good price for a great product.

It is not possible to fit 36 Bach masterpieces on two CDs, so what Essential Bach does is present individual movements from across a range of the composer's work. The anthology is clearly aimed at the newcomer, and the absence of booklet notes to put the music in context is disappointing. We are only given titles, performers, and what films the extracts have been featured in, from Rollerball to The English Patient.

On the plus side, most if not all of the music is instantly recognizable, by melody if not by name. Everything from the Brandenburg Concertos to "Air on a G String" to the B Minor Mass and St. Matthew Passion is represented. Performances range from 1960 to 1993, encompassing both early instrument and modern orchestra interpretations by a wide variety of forces, including Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Raymond Leppard leading the English Chamber Orchestra. Given such diversity the result is unavoidably a patchwork, albeit one made from the finest materials, and as such is perhaps best treated as a sampler to aid exploration of the vast legacy of one of the very greatest composers who ever lived. --Gary S. Dalkin, Amazon.co.uk

5 out of 5 stars so amazing .......2006-06-14

I love this kind of playing. this is my favorite classical cd.

3 out of 5 stars Essential Bach is OK.......2005-09-29

This is a good basic primer. A true Bach lover might find a better selection/orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of mostly recognizeable music.......2005-03-18

LOVE LOVE LOVE this 2-CD set. I bought I a awhile back and have enjoyed it very much. My toddler likes it too. I think it's a great value for the money and may have to get another copy if this one wears out.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Essential Bach.......2005-02-01

Value and exquisite sampler of Bach on two CD's at an affordable price. Recorded by the likes primarily of Academy of the St. Martin-in-the-fields, Chicago Sympony, Boston Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and with virtuoso performers as William Bennett, Heinz Hollinger, Pepe Romero, and Wolfgang Rubsam, one gets treated to wonderful Bach exerpts of all his fantastic breath and depth of chamber, symphony and choral works.

One will have to go to other places to find background on these marvelous compositions as the liner notes only list perfomer and date recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-07-13

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars lovely music, but . . . . ........2007-07-03

No one doubts that Bach's music is beautiful, and so many of the pieces in this album, favorites of his second wife, are lovely. Here are my objection. First of all, nowhere on the outside of this CD does this indicate that these are only *highlights* of the Anna Magdelena notebook. Furthermore, many of the tracks (from French Suites #1 & #2, from the Well-Tempered Clavier, from the Goldberg Variations) are pieces I already own in high quality recording by virtuosi. This CD does not limit itself, say, to pieces that Bach composed originally for this collection; in other words, there is nothing scholarly about the pieces that were chosen for these highlights. Rather, it is essentially selling a "Bach's Greatest Hits" kind of CD under a more respectable name. For those whose classical collections consist primarily of "Greatest Hits" collections of various composers, you might as well toss in this CD. For the discriminating collector, though, interested in collecting serious works by Bach, this CD is entirely unworthy.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Magdalena Notebook-- a treasure trove of Baroque music.......2006-03-20

This is music for contemplating number and time and not realize you are doing that. These pieces from Anna Magdalena Bach's notebook are a significant part of the history of western culture, and the music is brilliant, lucid, and passionate. Just as, I suppose, Bach's wife was. Played on harpsichord and clavichord, the work-- not all by Bach-- seems rigourously, mysteriously modern, and the anonymous "Musette in A Major" one could even say had in it the roots of ragtime piano. Last but not least, it's quite possible that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson can never be less than sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Music for Bach's Katy.......2005-03-31

Luther had his Katy who supported him and the Reformation magnificently and faithfully. Bach who was real student and follower of Luther's, had his second wife, Anna Magdalena who was so much for him and his family and music.

Here great notebook of the music she enjoyed immensely so we can as well.

Especially fond of harpsichord music, this has marvelous selection of that, but fond of Rondeau in B-flat major. Minuet in G major is one of my favorites. New to me are the Arias, especially "Bist du bei mir" and ""Ich habe genug". If you're not conversant in German, do go on the website the liner notes provides and get the translation in English for these are marvelous testimonies of their faith in words and song.

5 out of 5 stars Charming and beautiful.......2004-12-13

This CD is a collection of music from the notebook of Bach's wife, who was a singer. It includes dances, arias and other favorite songs. Most of the pieces range from peppy little dance tunes(like Musette in A Major) to delicate baroque airs (like Prelude no.1), all played on the harpsichord, clavichord or cello. The pieces that really stand out are the arias, sung beautifully by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in German. Most are religious, but there is one that is a nice love song "Willst du mein Herz mir schenken." The website on the back of the liner notes has the lyrics for the arias and they are worth reading. Besides the fact that this is good music, it also provides interesting insight into Bach's life and family and the liner notes have some interesting information about Anna and her notebook. This is a charming collection of music that is a great and cheap addition to any classical music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bach's wifes' collection of her favorite pieces.......2001-06-10

Yes Music of JS Bach chosen by his wife who was a singer. This collection is a lovely and beautifully performed collection of harpicord and intimate pieces that were Anna's most cherished favorites composed by her husband. What a lovely addition to any chamber music lovers collection. It affords not only wonderful selections but a rare window into the behind the scenes aspect of Bachs life and the commanding role music played in his and his family's life. The performances range from delicate to sublime and are beautifully recorded. It is an amazing bargin to have such an esoteric collection of Bachs' work so well done and so cheap. My god run and get the whole series; I have and when I want a perfect day I just pile them in my CD and press the forward button. The result is a day of glorious music on a scale to be both background as well as a breathtakingly elegant listening experience.

Tha Blue Carpet Treatment finds Snoop employing his usual impressive lineup of collaborators and strutting his way through a by-now standard litany of libidinous, gang-bangin' boasts. But when your record is packed with this much veteran savvy and smooth flavor, the pride comes naturally. Snoop has been g-funky as hell for a long while, but "Crazy," with its hypnotic keyboard loop and silky flow, is impressive even for him. It's a trickle of light to counter the equally accomplished but darker "Vato," a fever-dream street duet with Cypress Hill's B Real. Traces of Doggystyle-era gangsta show up as well; the laconic flow of "Candy (Drippin' Like Water)" for instance, featuring E-40 and MC Eiht, is as instantly appealing as anything on that seminal debut. It must be said that whatever Snoop Dogg releases at this point in his career competes with his overwhelming celebrity and cartoonish, pimp-maestro image, and that makes it hard to take him seriously. But here, even a too-obvious, potentially disastrous song like "I Wanna F*** You" manages not to be ridiculous. If that's not the mark of a true star, I don't know what is. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Superstar rapper and hip hop icon Snoop Dogg readies for his highly anticipated album "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment" releasing on November 21, 2006 through Doggystyle/Geffen.

Early buzz from industry insiders promise a classic album complete with the reunion of Snoop and DR. DRE with three bangers from the dynamic duo. This classic pairing marks the duo's first collaborative effort in approximately five years and promises to make history once again.

"Tha Blue Carpet Treatment" is a return to the original sound that put the Long Beach rapper on the map with Snoop keeping it gangsta on each and every record. Following the street single, "Vato," produced by PHARRELL and featuring B-REAL, comes the highly anticipated second single, "That's That" produced by NOTTZ and featuring R&B crooner R. KELLY. This catchy and melodic song was most added at Urban and Rhythmic formats, proving it is shaping up to be another platinum hit for the West Coast "Boss." Snoop says, "'That's That' is theme music for a classy gangsta party - that's when you ladies pull out the high heels and the playas pull out the three-piece suits. You'll see in the video! Me and R. KELLY had a lot of fun shooting this one."

Throughout the album, Snoop takes it back to the hood showcasing the gritty realness that helped shape his status as a cultural icon. XXL writes, "Snoop's lyrical fire seems resurrected, as he delivers arguably his most consistently scorching work post-Doggystyle." Thirsty fans will be thrilled with the thought provoking song "Imagine," produced by and featuring DR. DRE, which reflects on what life would be like for the California natives without hip hop. The signature DR. DRE piano riff is complimented by the D'ANGELO sung chorus, marking the first time fans have heard D'ANGELO in six long years. Another album favorite is club banger "Psst," produced by JAMIE FOXX, N8 and BRAINZ and features JAMIE FOXX's signature falsetto on the hook. The album also features two collaborations with AKON, "Boss's Life" produced by DR. DRE and the current radio smash "I Wanna Love You," the latter also being on AKON's upcoming album. Of the album, Snoop says, "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment is my presentation to the world on what it means to be the King of the West Coast. I really worked extra hard on making this one perfect and got the best of the best among my homies in the music game- SKATEBOARD P, TIMBALAND, R. KELLY, D'ANGELO... and you know when me and DR. DRE get together - it's a monster."

As a gift to loyal fans, Snoop is treating 9 winners to "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment." Nine winning tickets will be placed inside random CDs of the album which reward the lucky recipient with a diamond Ice link watch. The grand prize winner will win a diamond Ice Link watch worth $100,000. Three winners will be prized with diamond Ice Link watches worth $10,000 and five winners will get diamond Ice Link watches worth $5,000.

As if Snoop were not busy enough, he also recently released his first book, "Love Don't Live Here No More," a story loosely based on his own life's trials and tribulations. The book, co-written by playwright David E. Talbert, is the first in a series of novels called Doggy Tales that takes readers from the unforgiving streets of Long Beach to the bright lights of show business.

4 out of 5 stars Polished version of Snoop but pretty decent........2007-05-24

I feel I have to give this a 4 just from production alone. I like the various productions track for track. It could be more gangster but I think Snoop has the catalog for that already so why try to out do anything thats already certified. He definately comes off more loose than some of his other efforts and why not when you've become a household name. I really am not a R Kelly fan but "Thats Thats" is a super smooth track and just works. I also like that he brought on Dogg Pound & MC Eiht too. There is much more west coast than DRE, Snoop, Game, NWA, DJ Quik, etc.If you are looking to update your west coast collection please include this one.

5 out of 5 stars Still Great Rappers Out There.......2007-05-24

There have not been too many rap albums that have come out over the past few years that I would bother to buy. A lot of newer rappers same to have no talent. They can't sing, the beat sounds like it was thrown together in a few minutes, and every song on the album sounds almost the same. Thank God that artists like Snoop Dogg still got it. This cd was well worth the money and personally my favorite album I've bought over the last few years. Its a must have for any Snoop fan, and even any rap music fan for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars organ works by bach.......2007-01-10

excellent. unforgettable works by one of the masters, the grand organs have their own place in time mostly heard in church surroundings. this brings it home.cigar, brandy, toccata and fugue d minor, heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Hurford plays very musically.......2006-11-24

Peter Hurford is a wonderul musician.. his interpretations of this music are musical.. (esp. with the St. Anne Fugue where each of the three variations are connected with beatiful transitions..)
A wonderful recording.. in an era where everything has to be perfect,
it's nice to hear an artist take some risk and give us their own
personal, unique, and original interpretations.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-27

When you buy a CD like this, the one thing you expect of the artist is to nail the intro to Toccata and Fugue In D Minor, Bach's great masterwork and the lead piece on the CD. Unfortunately, the organist plays the intro robotically, truncating notes and overextending pauses. He rushes some passages so badly in the intro that one cannot distinguish the melodic line. Toccata and Fugue In D Minor is so musically advanced that it sounds modern even today, but you miss that with this recording.

5 out of 5 stars This album belongs amongst the first four or five in every Bach collection........2006-07-27

What to say about these extraordinary works?

First of all, that this is a double-album full of titanic masterworks, intelligently and skillfully performed. These discs belong amongst the first four or five albums in every Bach collection. The famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor is here, together with another, lesser-known but equally awe-inspiring "Dorian" Toccata and Fugue in D minor. There are quite a few other familiar war-horses---the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, the St. Anne Prelude and Fugue, and the Tocatta, Adagio, and Fugue in C (which I first encountered in a piano transcription performed by Evgeny Kissin, on his album with the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition... well worth hearing next to the original organ writing here), among others---and some more obscure pieces as well to keep us out of "greatest hits" territory (almost always a drawback in recital albums). Like the Mozart piano concerti and the Beethoven symphonies, Bach's compositions for organ are amongst the towering summits of Western music; there is nothing else like them.

Since I'm playing critic here, I suppose I ought to offer at least a bit of actual criticism, rather than only effusive praise. While many would beg to differ, three composers (whose careers, interestingly, were almost exactly chronologically contiguous) are, by a long-standing historical consensus, recognized to occupy the highest tier of artistic achievement in "common practice," tonal music: Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Of those three masters, Mozart alone is recognized as having achieved a perfect or near-perfect balance between subject and object, style and substance: Bach tipped the balance just a bit in favor of objectivity and substance, and Beethoven in favor of subjectivity and style. And so, just as I find that Beethoven's music does not hold up quite as well as Mozart's to repeated listenings because his stylistic and emotive devices are less effective once you've heard them before, so that they no longer take you by surprise, so too do I find that Bach's music, especially in the long contrapuntal sections, is not always as worthwhile for listening as it is for theoretical analysis... it is perhaps not quite as valuable in practice as it is in theory, in other words. The organ pieces on these discs are sublime masterpieces, but if they do fall short of absolute perfection it is for being somewhat dry and academic.

In addition, the different organs Herford plays here so often produce, as good organs will, such a staggering, chest-rumbling roar that you have trouble discerning the pitches in these compositions. It's a similar problem to listening to harpsichord music, where at times you hear just a lot of clanging and can't tell what note or chord is being played. It's not a big problem on these recordings, but it is a little distracting at times.

Nevertheless, it's said that what makes a work of art a masterpiece is not its being perfect or flawless, but rather that its virtues are so meaningful and effective that they compensate for the piece's flaws and imperfections. In fact, in sublime pieces such as these, it's precisely that imbalance, or aesthetic asymmetry, you might say, that makes the music dynamic and exciting: it creates an inner tension, a sort of yearning or striving that, in the hands of the greatest of masters (of which Bach is uncontestably one), makes for a transcendent artistic statement and an invaluable testament to the human experience.

In short, buy this album and listen to it often!

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment in this Bach recording............2006-05-29

Peter Hurford is perhaps one of the foremost organists of his time. He has not only studied music but law as well, giving a scholarly twist on his education. I have always been pleased by his interpretations of Bach. They are no-nonsense, with strict tempos, clean, accurate passages, and registrations which are very lush and vibrant. For the new fan of Bach, there is no better place to start, as this set contains all of the "big" organ pieces for which Bach became legendary, as well as a few well-known chorale preludes. For those who wish to explore Bach's organ contributions in more detail, buy Hurford's complete Bach recordings (Although I believe it is out of print or very hard to obtain, as I have not yet found one). If this is the case, buy Marie-Claire Alain's version on Erato. No two organists understand Bach better.

We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and appreciation for music through this CD and so are my husband and I!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-22

This is possibly the best recording made of classical music in history. The opening Toccata is backed by a number of excellent fugues, with the first track becoming extremely well known but usually not played in its entirety. What I really like is the futuristic gothic sound which is the look and feel I go for on a daily basis. The 1700s was right here right now but didn't date very bad at all. The sound is still modern and Bach is a lot better than Mozart. My social worker got me into some classical music, at least to the point where I wasn't shy to check it out at the library and rip it on my hard drive. Better than Handel's Messiah. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars E.Power Briggs Organ playing Bach's best.......2007-03-16

This is simply the best recording of Bach's Toccata & Fugue D-minor on an organ; or, should I say organs, as this recording was made while Briggs played simualtaneously on the four antiphonal organs in the Cathedral of Freiburg Germany. The set-up was made possible by the ability of one organ keyboard to play all of the four organs in the cathedral at once. A totally unique organ system in all of the world I understand.
But this special set-up is just a great addition to the best recorded playing of this most famous (and best work in my view)of Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D- minor. I'm no expert...just a listener...but man, this guy Briggs could really play that thing.
Turn this up as high as the law will allow and engulf yourself in this best organ piece ever written, played by one of the best organ players ever and played on one of the best organ set-ups ever recorded.
You just won't find better.

5 out of 5 stars The benchmark of the four tocatta's and fugue's.......2006-06-05

This has been, by far, my favorite album in my collection. This is the best way to experience Bach's true genius. By having available four instruments controlled by one console allowed Mr. Power-Biggs to let the listener hear what Bach wanted you to hear in his music. If he were alive today, I'm sure Bach would have been the greatest proponent of multi-channel recording. If only Michael Murray would go to Freiburg and re-create this great performance, perhaps adding the Passacaglia and Fugue in c, and the 'Great' Fantasia and Fugue in g, or the Prelude and Fugue in a (BWV543). What an awe inspiring album this would be, recorded in DTS!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing can top this one!!!.......2005-04-27

This recording has a long history for me. It is the first album I ever ordered. I was 12 years old at the time (1977).
I had the stereo pressing and wore it out. I was thrilled when this album was finally issued on CD. Even though I don't have the Super Audio CD version, the original CD release can hold its own against any disc. The Chorale Preludes ("We all believe in one God" and "Jesus, my joy") and the Fantasy in G major - none of which appeared on the original LP release - are also quite enjoyable.

My only complaint is that the original 1974 album cover for "The Four Great Toccatas and Fugues" was not reproduced for the CD release. It does, however, appear on the Super Audio CD.

This is the CD by which I measure all other performances of these works, including earlier recordings made of them by E. Power Biggs. In some instances, I believe that once you're accustomed to hearing a piece performed a certain way, then you will use that approach as your yardstick to measure other performances of that same work. That hasn't applied to me in all cases. I replaced my first recording of Brahms' "Haydn Variations" with a version I heard by a different conductor and orchestra. I made the same switch with Haydn's "Surprise Symphony" a few years later.

Happily, I feel I have the definitive rendition of Bach's Four Great Toccatas and Fugues. Buy it, crank it up and enjoy it!!!

4 out of 5 stars A great recording by a great organist.......2003-08-12

This recording of Bach's four great Toccata & Fugues is noteworthy for two reasons. First, Biggs' performance in all four is exceptional, leading me quickly from indifference to the two least-known to being a great fan of all of them. Second, this recording, heard in a good pair of headphones, gives you not only left and right stereo but an astonishing sense of forward and back. The way the engineers managed to create this effect, in a way that's easily reproduced without expensive audiophile equipment, is simply amazing.

At the time of this recording, the Freiburg Muenster boasted two large organs in the crossing, a choir organ, and a supplemental set of pipes (mainly trumpets and other ornamental stops) near the main entrance on the nave, all of which could be operated from one console. Biggs handles this awesome array of organ power superbly, choosing his stops for maximum musical -- and spatial -- effect. While the rare effect of playing four organs at once is apparent with speakers, the front/back effect is best heard through headphones.

Despite its age, this recording holds up well to comparison. If you want to split hairs, some recordings of individual Toccatas may be more faithful to a live experience in the lowest bass and harmonics. And if you have been raised on (spoiled by?) subwoofers, there are probably more floor-thumping renditions captured by newer recording equipment. But I have yet to encounter one recording of all four Toccatas which is so much fun to listen to. If you only buy one recording of these pieces, this is the one to get!

5 out of 5 stars Teeming with classics.......2007-03-01

I purchased this for track #10, which I'd happened to hear on the radio...it stayed in my head until I tracked down the CD. I have a relatively basic working knowledge of classical music, so this long playing collection was an excellent and surprising introduction to several of Bach's diverse works...both well known and more obscure. Certainly a worthwhile addition to your classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory CD!.......2006-06-29

This CD is an excellent introduction to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. It's certainly not exhaustive, but it's a start. It also includes pieces from Johann Michael Bach, as well as another composer (whose name escapes me at the moment) whose work was once mistakenly attributed to JSB. This entire series of CDs is perfect for those who wish to learn more about the Classical Masters. Start with this series, and then by all means, delve deeper into their respective repetoires. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Bach........2006-02-27

I don't want to repeat what has been said already but this is a great indroduction to Bach. The variety on this release is good, but like has been said numerous times before, the amount of variety fails to set a single mood. But with a low price and a great deal of variety this is a great CD for those who want to start getting into Bach. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bach For Dummies?.......2002-07-18

A smattering of short excerpts -- many not on their native instruments -- to introduce the great literature left to us by J.S. Bach. Some of the versions are truly inspired, a few are not.

If you like what you hear here, by all means seek out the full-length, original instrument versions!

5 out of 5 stars A super introduction to Bach.......2002-03-04

For someone who knows little about Bach and wants to learn something, you couldn't do better than to give them this CD. Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra give their signature warm, plush sound to the work of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, making him sound very nearly like a Romantic rather than a baroque or classical composer. This is not a bad thing--some complain that Bach, with his mathematical leanings, leaves them cold. That isn't possible with the inviting material on this CD.
