This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

well if you have an open mind you can really see the beauty this album has in it John is a genuis thanks to him the peppers are still around and rockin and is too me the Best guitarist going right now!

First things first. John Frusciante is of course the guitarist for the RHCP, and if you're just getting into him you'll be surprised by this. It sounds nothing like latter day RHCP. Yes, its good. While RHCP reconvene to make a new album that hopefully is good, John Frusciante makes this, a superb album full of great songs. It sounds great, its raw and unproduced but this only adds to the music. 'A Doubt' is one of the finest songs Frusciante has ever written, with its unconventional style and brilliant vocal performance. John has really improved as a singer, and well, go on, just buy this album. It ain't By the Way, thats for sure.

Nick, I was imediately compelled to respond to your review of this album and thoughts on John Frusciante and the impact he has had on your fresh mind of 15 years. "At least once or twice during your adolescent years, you seem to lose hope. I know because I have". I am 24 years old and think I have past those "adolescent years" you speak of, and I still sometimes feel hopeless. But I always have music and other forms of art to fall back on to reinforce that hope; it will always be there for us. Like you, "To Record Only Water...." was the Frusciante album that I was first exposed to, through a close friend, and I haven't turned back since. Unlike you, I became a RHCP fan after I discovered John's solo efforts. I am responding to your post because of your age and location. It gives me even more hope that there are not only other JF fans out there who I consider peers, but one's of a different generation and country! Thank you Nick! I am shocked and appalled by all the 5-star reviews this album got. I listened to this album expecting something new and fresh, but still of the same quality and creativity as John's work with the Chili Peppers. What I ended up hearing was 12 tracks of poetry. That's all you get with this album. You hear no worthwhile guitar work (which he is more than capable of). There is not a single song on this album that really gets the blood flowing. If you want to hear John sing you some painfully slow songs and strum a chord every now and then, get this album. But if you want to hear something that has actual musicial talent, go elsewhere. I know this guy can rock, why doesn't he?

Oh, by the way: The rest of his albums in this current batch of material are pretty much the same as I mentioned above, with the possible exception of "Ataxia - Automatic Writing". If you want to hear something a LITTLE BIT better, get that instead.

At least once or twice during your adolescent years, you seem to lose hope. I know because I have.

I am 15, I am very fortunate, but yet I am always down or depressed in some way. And this is where John Frusciante has come into my life. Since I was 11, the Chili Peppers have been my favourite band, I own practically all the albums, and I love everything they release; whether it be rock, funk, the experimental, or mellow - practically all the songs touch me in some way. I love them.

About a year ago, I started getting into John Frusciante's solo stuff - I bought "To Record Only Water For 10 Days." I was rather disappointed with his solo work because I expected music akin to the Chili Peppers, but instead got mellow, at times wierd, music. However, in time it grew on me and his solo music now rivals his own band's as my favourite artist. I began to understand, like so many other people need to begin to, that his solo music is just as beautiful and fantastic in its own right.

"The Will To Death" is my favourite J.F. album, I love it very much. To me, it is indescribable because I have never heard anything like it before. His creativity is unlimited... he is truly inspired. But I guess, if you've had a life like his, you would be rather special too. (A thousand voices in your mind could help you too, hey?)

Songs like "Loss" and the title track just... blow me away. The organ-like synthesiser in "Loss" makes the hair stand up on my neck. "The Days Have Turned" makes me want to shed a tear in self-pity. "Far Away" haunts me, yet always puts a smile on my face because his lyrics and singing are perfectly beautiful.

I'm listening to the album right now, and I guess I have realised that it takes a special type of person to understand John Frusciante's music, as J.F. himself is one of the most special people on the planet. Buy if you have a soul, this album can do nothing but enrich it.

P.S. To "Sep", or people like him: Instead of using this cd to treat your insomnia, actually listen to it. J.F. is a seperate entity to the Chilis - his music is different, but equally as special.

Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

Disney's Snow White, the world's first animated musical feature (1937), is still a standard in the industry. Though 1930s recording technology was primitive by today's standards, the Disney music studios have always used the available technology to its fullest, and this recording still stands up. One Song.......2006-02-19

I bought this album almost especially for the piece of music entitled "Special Sort Of Death." It does sound creepy but that's what I loved about it. From I saw the film I was like I have to have that.

Anyway another reason for me purchasing this album was the main titles for the film I love the ochestration. My favourite song on this album would have to be One Song followed by with A Smile and a Song.

And number 5 (a piece of music) I can't remember what it's called but it is creepy too the part that has snow white running through the woods.

Someday my prince will come is nice too. Adriana's voice is a little high and annoying sometimes though. But it's still nice to listen to. I listen to this album alot it's very nice and I like to listen to the version of One Song that is played at the end of the movie.

good soundtrack for halloween.......2005-07-14

first of all, i have seen the movie and the hag scares me very much. about the music,it's not good music for children because the orchestral moving creates dark suites. the other part of makin' pies is no exception. i listened to special sort of death on a site called mp3.com and the beginning is very disturbing almost, because it's when the queen appears as the old witch and she plots to destroy snow white

REMasterpiece!.......2003-01-21

This soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the film, and It's gloriously remastered to make you feel you are still watching and not just listening to the music from the movie itself.

In the liner notes I read the original soundtrack only consisted of five songs, the five songs we hear sung in the film. "One song/I'm Wishing", "Hi Ho", "The Yodeling Song", "Some day my prince will come", and "Whistle while you work". Over the years, the instrumental musical score was thrown in to create a wonderful masterpiece of a soundtrack.

I highly recommend purchasing this. If you like the music from the movie, you will love this. After hearing this for the first time(I've now heard it at least 100, thanks to my 2 yr. old), the movie is brought out to be more of a musical adventure as well as a wonderful story to be told.
This is my son's favorite c.d., and he has so much fun dancing and singing along.

A Magical, Delightful Soundtrack.......2002-10-07

This was the first of the newly remastered and expanded "Disney classic soundtracks" that I purchased for my collection, and it's still my favorite. How wonderful to have, not only the vocals from the old vinyl version ("I'm Wishing/One Song," "With a Smile and a Song," "Heigh-Ho," "Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum," "The Dwarfs' Yodel Song" (and if you don't want to get up and dance to it, there's something wrong with you!), and "Some Day My Prince Will Come"), but the background instrumentals from the track, never before available to the at-home audience. The "Queen Theme," the chilling "Far Into the Forest," and "I've Been Tricked" particularly bring scenes from the movie springing to mind. There are also two songtracks that were cut from the film print. If you're a Disney-lover, your collection must positively include this CD.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.
