A very nice "blind pick".......2007-01-25
I bought this album, along with one from Griffin House and Amos Lee by following links here of what people bought when buying other albums in the same genre.
Well, I can say this album is really, really good. Along with Griffin House and Amos Lee, those cds can play in my cd player forever on repeat and after a few hours I just start thinking "hey it's still the same cd in".
Yes it's that good and smooth. No track where you want to skip to the next, they're all good.
Mixed bag.......2007-01-15
This CD has a number of great pop tracks, but I find some of his slower stuff less inspiring and routinely skip them for the 4 or so tracks I actually dig on. Not as solid an effort as I was expecting, but the tracks that are good are VERY good.
AMAZING CD !!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-15
Just an amazing CD, is a best-buy, Some of his songs have the same feeling of Gin Blossoms, just incredible, if you don't believe that just listen the audio samples here. Very nice CD that can be listenned at any time.
Saccharine, teary, pitiful, CHRISTIAN-SOUNDING . . . .......2006-07-04
First, a disclaimer: I'm not submitting a bad review just to be contrarian, or to lower this artist's average star rating, or to be in any way malicious. I also admit that Matt Nathanson and those of his ilk probably don't align wih my particular taste in music. So writing this might be something akin to Thurston Moore reviewing Johnny Mathis' Greatest Hits.
I would venture to say, however, that Thurston Moore never had to sit in a car for four hours listening to Johnny Mathis. This was my experience yesterday: with a four-hour drive from Crested Butte, Colorado to Denver still mostly ahead of us, the person driving (whom we had just met, and whose affinity for Christian Rock was unknown to us) decided to cue up this abomination of an album, which was followed by the live album, and then some other folk dreck by a criminal named Marc Broussard. I like folk, old and new--Iron and Wine, Joni Mitchell, John Prine, Guy Clark--and I suppose that this isn't Christian music, despite its appearance on an ipod that was otherwise laden with Michael W. Smith, DC Talk, and Amy Grant. It sure sounds like Christian music, though; it's no small wonder that I loathed it without the aid of my anti-Christian biases.
In reality, Nathanson might do well to consider inserting some Christian-sounding cliches into his lyrics, or even being "born-again." It would expand his audience and sell more records, which is all he's trying to do anyway. It's a career move that worked for George W. Bush, and no one seems to think that he's cynical or insincere . . .
A Treasure Worth Finding.......2006-04-19
I first heard about Mr. Nathanson while watching a television series (I forget which), and I couldn't help but think about his music for the longest time. Then while at Best Buy, I saw it on sale for 10 bucks, so I thought I'd give it a try. I haven't been disaapointed since. I love the WHOLE album, and there aren't many artists I can say that about. Every song sounds a little different, but each contains a consistent sound that allows the album to flow like a stream towards the ocean.
By far my favorite would have to be "Sad Songs", simply because I can apply it personally. In a sense, I feel that the whole album is a kind of lament, with some crunches here and there to signal anger, and softer sounds all around to symbolize sadness. And to top it off, ending with a song of hope and pleading, which I feel everyone experiences when they're with someone.
Again, overall, a great album. If you like Josh Kelly or Five For Fighting, you'll love this little guy named Matt.

Fans of the celestial sounds of Enya and the lush trip-hop beats of Delerium and Enigma will love Balligomingo. Contrary to its Eastern-sounding name, Balligomingo is the baby of one Garrett Schwartz, a keyboardist-programmer who collaborated with a variety of musicians for Beneath The Surface. Though purely a U.S. and Canadian affair, the music does create an ethereal air of mystery and tension not unlike that of Asian underground pioneer Nitin Sawhney's recent Prophesy (though Balligomingo is far less profound). The buoyant, atmospheric tracks of Surface include various female vocalists who extend the songs' allure, a live band treated to sound like sweet computer rhythms, and a 15-piece orchestra. Most of the songs flow together, sustaining the album's dream sequence mood like a long summer rain. Occasionally, the vocals border on teen-pop, but mostly they blend into the foreground, helping to advance Balligomingo's lush world-beat-and-tone poetry muse. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites.......2007-06-14
I've got 100+ CD's of electronic music of different styles/genres, and Beneath the Surface is one of the short list I keep going back to. Stands out in the crowded field of music it's representing.
Quintessential Ethereal.......2006-11-14
Every song features synthesizer and female vocals (I believe there are seven different vocalists featured across the 11 tracks, including Kristy Thirsk of Delerium fame). That is not to say that the songs all sound the same - the varieties in vocalists and moods are quite sufficient to maintain the listener's interest. "Falling" and "Marooned" stand out as the highlights of the album.
Though the official press Beneath the Surface calls it "a lush soundscape of electronic, acoustic, orchestral and world beat textures," I feel that the acoustic and world beat components are rather lacking. Synthesizers are very dominant throughout, with a good bit of orchestral support. The one track that does break the mold is "Marooned," which features some nice acoustic guitar.
Beneath the Surface sounds very similar to Delerium's work, with more consistent verse-chorus song structure, and no instrumental tracks. This is unsurprising considering that Bill Leeb (half of Delerium's Leeb and Fulber) had a hand in Balligomingo's creation. Despite its somewhat formulaic composition, Beneath the Surface is quite engaging, and contains some very moving songs. I strongly recommend it if you are fond of electronica, or are looking for someting in the vein of Delerium's female-fronted pop songs like "Silence."
Worth Every Penny!.......2006-11-02
I am really happy about my purchase of Balligomingo's Beneath the Surface. I like everything about it. I don't skip a single track. Each track has something to offer. The female vocals are amazing. They accompany the synths and other electronic sounds in a silky smooth compatible way. Audiophiles will love this album too as the tracks can show off a good sound system or great headphones. Personally, I like to listen with headphones so I can hear all of the nuances and layering contained within Beneath the Surface. If you like this album you may also like Amethystium, Mythos, Blue Stone, Delerium, and Sleepthief. I recommend them highly.
Absolutely gorgeous.......2006-09-05
After four years since its release, "Beneath the Surface" has remained one of my favorite cds of all time. The cd is absolutely stunning with its blend of pop, new age, ambient, and trance music. The ethereal female vocals are equally gorgeous. The music reminds me of Enigma, Delerium, Conjure One, and Sleepthief. The music is totally soothing to listen to with its lush electronic beats. It is hard to pick a favorite song off the album. All of the songs on "Beneath the Surface" are wonderful. The last I have heard is that Balligomingo is currently working on a follow up album. I hope I don't have to wait until next year to hear the music.

This was a gift and the receipant loves it. Amazon responded to my order in above average time and I will continue to buy through their website.
Not for the serious flautist.......2006-06-10
Most of the tracks on this CD consist of saccharine fluff, such as Disney, show-tunes, etc. If I buy a flute recording, I want to hear some serious music, not this ghastly schmaltz. And I hate to say it, I'm not a huge fan of Galway's playing style. It's too light and airy, just on the edge of going into overtones. He overuses his vibrato, especially on the higher notes. When you want them to just smoothly soar with rich tone, they just sort of flutter about. He does have impeccable technique and speed, but his tone leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Seek out another artist!
The Very Best of James Galway.......2005-09-23
Really is one of the best of James Galway, if not the very best. Easy listening, soothing, relaxing - easy to enjoy
Lightweight.......2005-08-24
Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons, while almost the entire second CD is devoted to ephemeral, forgettable pop fluff. There's not much of substance here; given Galway's vast (over 50 recordings) discography, the classical music lover would be well advised to look elsewhere.

The best driving/chill out music.......2007-04-24
The more I listen to this album, the more I love it.
Copeland's vocals and instrumentation are powerful and unique. There is a song on this cd to suit my every mood.
"When Finally Set Free" is my personal favorite, but "Priceless" and "Brightest" are amazing as well. I consider it to be a must have indie album.
the height.......2007-02-21
This is probably in my point of view the best copeland album so far. An amazing collection of songs filled with love, sorrow, regret and sadness, thought they are so perfectly created they can make you feel both happy and sad. but with Aaron Marsh's voice nothing gets bad. Most of the songs from this album was written by Aaron when someone he loved was sick, so most of the songs are for that person and you can really hear his honesty in them.
a true masterpiece
Amazing.......2006-12-22
Just like THis Providence's first album after changing their name from "The Sunday Best", this album has every song that is a masterpiece of songwriting. Songs like "Walking Downtown" is an upbeat song with faster rhythms. "Coffee" is jsut as smooth as a 40 oz. cup of coffee poured with 55 gallons of vanilla cream, refined with melted caramel and cocoa. That's how smooth it is. "Priceless" actually labels this CD as just what it is: PRICELESS. Another good song is. "There Cannot be a Close Second" Faster but slow rhythms make the perfect mix for a song. Just get thtis CD, for whatever price. You won't be disappointed.
Suprised at how boring it was............2006-06-05
If you want to hear a talented band that actually has lyrics that are poignant without being cliched, go listen to Muse. Far more diverse, and the most talent I've ever seen packed into three guys. Go listen to Muse and then tell me the guy in this band is a good singer.... yeah, right....
Brilliant, Smart, Beautiful.......2006-04-19
The amazingness and uniquness/brilliance of this album can be compared to something like Sunny Day Real Estate. It's just that good, and it's a work of pure genius, the lyrics themselves, while not abstract, are very touching and incredible.

A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

Very good band.......2007-02-21
I heard a few seconds of 7861 on a Victory Records podcast and thought to myself, "Wow... they are awesome. I've gotta hear more of that." Any fans of As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, Zao, etc. will enjoy, if not love this band. I downloaded 7861 off iTunes prior to buying the cd, and couldn't stop listening to it for a week. The cd is definitely worth picking up and listening to. Support these guys, they deserve it.
One thing I found funny on the label on the cd was that they labeled them as "Brutal Death Metal Core". What a mouthful. Any hxc junkie knows its "Brutal Deathcore", which is a new (I guess, I had never heard it used beforehand) sub/fusion genre I never really thought about.
Well anyway, happy shopping, and buy this cd.
Good band with alot of potential.......2007-02-15
I bought this cd after hearing "Our Last Road" and "The Reason". I wasn't a fan of the vocals at first, which are extreme, but they grew on me pretty quickly, especially after I watched a live video on youtube. They also use a keyboard, or "keytar" to add atmosphere to their music, which does work well. The standout song is the hauntingly powerful "7861". Listen to that song on their myspace a few times, and more likely that not it will grow on you. It's a very good cd, I recommend it.
A great hardcore disc to start off the new year..........2007-01-24
I got hooked on Beneath the Sky back when I heard the demo for 7861. Being a big fan of Zao, I instantly loved the vocal style and presentation. The more I listened to this song, the more I found influences from other great bands, hardcore and other. The album as a whole sounds great and is very comprehensive. For a first attempt (if you don't consider the EP their freshman disc), I'm floored by this album.
My favorites are "7861", "A Grave Mistake", "The Reason", and "The Last Road".

James Galway has added the beauty of his classical flute to popular tunes and it is a delight to listen to it. It adds to the serenity of any moment.
Angelic Beauty.......2002-05-06
This is one of those incredibly beautiful CDs that you never really get tired of. James Galway's magically soaring flute takes you places, relaxing you and filling whatever corner you are in with beautiful music. Predictably, my favorite song is "The Wind Beneath My Wings"-it soars triumphantly and wonderfully under James Galway's whimsical playing. "From a Distance" is also done uniquely, starting quietly and finishing with a beautiful (yes, you do use this word alot when describing this CD) climax of the chorus. Also not to missed are the haunting "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", the enchanting "Come To My Garden" and "Miss Saigon" with its Oriental flair and exotic sound. If you've been looking for a CD with music that uplifts you and reminds you that there is beauty in the world, this is it.
a touch of class and a touch of Ireland.......2000-07-13
I listen to James often . A masterful talent this is one of several hits cds. He is excellent and throws in a touch of Eire. Easy mellow and pleasant: you will never get tired of this.
Lovely, relaxing Irish music........1999-08-11
If you close your eyes you can float away to your most inner quiet space. This is James Galway at his best. His haunting renditions of popular and other songs make this CD a must have for Galway fans or fans of great instrumental music.

Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

an excellent sampler of patriotic military music.......2003-02-17
I love this CD because it combines into one disc many outstanding and well recorded (Telarc DDD) performances of a variety of patriotic military tunes. For someone who doesn't want to break down and buy the entire "Victory at Sea" set, along with soundtracks to "Patton," "Casablanca" and more, this is a fine choice. My only complaint would be that conductor Kunzel has a habit of adding his own flourishes to pieces. But the outstanding clarity of the Telarc sound and the grandness of the Cincinnati Pops counters this.

While the Genius continues to slice through resistant mentals with his liquid sword rhyme schemes, his sophomore album is the first clear sign that Wu-Tang's pre-eminence may be waning. Without Bobby Digital working the track wizardry, Beneath the Surface is an odd amalgamation of RZA-wannabe tracks (courtesy of the Arabian Prince and Mathematics) that are starting to sound more and more like Swizz Beats every day. Gza's rhyme assaults still pack a wallop, but his album shows wear at the seams, bulging with impossibly high ambitions and uneven execution. Songs like "Breaker, Breaker," "Publicity," and "Hip Hop Fury" still burn hotter than Sahara summers, but it's not enough to help the entire LP catch fire. --Oliver Wang

GZA - Beneath The Surface.......2005-12-26
After taking a 4 year break, after releasing his by far classic album "Liquid Swords" he comes back in 1999 with this "Beneath The Surface" album. Now a lot of people had negative opinions aimed at this album. I know why. Because of the lack of "RZA" production. I totally agree, only one track "1112" was produced by RZA. He was busy with other sh** at the time and couldnt get in any more beats. But GZA released it and it was good. The production had other producers and they did a great job. Let me break down my opinions on this album.
Lyrics, GZA did definately not lose his touch. 2 years after "Liquid Swords" the album "Wu-Tang Forever" came out in 1997 and he dropped mad knowledge so he still had it cracken. Well this album has great lyrics. GZA still speaks on those real life topics. Every single verse GZA spits is knowledge, lyrically he didnt add up like he did on Liqiud Swords. He was better lyrically on that album, but he sort of matured and kept the lyrics more real. I did think that he could have replaced "TRACKS" instead of those stupid skits that werent needed at all.But GZA definately kept it real lyrically on this album so if you were wondering that, he did.
Production wise, people hate the fact that RZA didnt produce anything except one track on the whole album. Well it sucks, but didnt bother me much because every beat on the album was real. Definately not as grimey like the Liquid Swords album but they were still good. Still had Wu-Affiliated producers knockin off the beats for him. If you like the whole "Wu-Tang" sound of production then this album is for you there. One of the beats I love is "High Price, Small Reward", that beat was f*cken insane! So check it, no RZA production, but still good!
Overall, this album deserves 5/5 stars, just for the fact that GZA didnt weaken lyrically, and the production was still done by "Wu-Tang Affiliated" producers! Every song is good, hands down. Get this.

the best of the best..........2005-11-10
I am a long time head and this album hits a spot few others can reach. Consistantly dark, atmospheric, and brilliant, Beneath the Surface is strong in the running for my favorite album of all time, all genres. Indispensable. Daily play for months and months has not diminished my respect for this one. Even the admittedly lame skits don't really hurt it. I played this one out like the first Bobby Digital, multiple listens daily for a looong time. Liquid Swords is incredible too, and a must but I like this one a little more. Legend of the Liquid Swords I could not feel at all, even after repeated listenings. It just doesn't have that same darkness... GZA reigns supreme and this is his crowning glory.
Long Live Liquid Swords.......2005-10-19
To be blunt, this album is no "Liquid Swords". The production credit takes a nosedive by comparison, although there are a few decent cuts spread over the album. Most of the tracks sound like "filler" tracks to me. It becomes difficult to maintain interest all the way through. GZA is, and has always been, a great lyricist with great delivery. That doesn't change. The production was the missing ingredient on this album.

I doubt we will ever see another Liquid Swords from the Genius.
