Amazon.com essential recording

Few albums are as fueled by hope, possibility, and the lure of the open road as Born to Run, a virtual concept album about small-town Jerseyites in search of a better life via hot-rodding out on the turnpike, scoring some small-time hustle, or blowing out of town altogether, either across the river to New York City or west for parts unknown. Songs like "Jungleland," "Thunder Road," "Backstreets," and the title track are epic productions, both sonically and lyrically, borrowing from Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and West Side Story. When Born to Run was released in 1975, it earned then-unknown Springsteen the rare honor of simultaneous covers on both Time and Newsweek. The attention was warranted then, and it still is now. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't experienced "Born to Run"..........2007-07-07

For me, it's just unimaginable to know music, and especially rock, without "Born to Run." This is one of the albums that I've grown up on since childhood, until each song has been so eternally emblazoned on my psyche that it brings so many memories. But outside of pure nostalgia, "Born to Run" is one of the premier rock albums ever in my mind. Bruce's third effort and first on a big budget, "Born to Run" captured people in 1975 with its good-time rocking music and lyricism that was all too real. But besides being a landmark triumph from a musical perspective, "Born to Run" accomplishes an amazing task by profiling the lifestyle of middle-class America in the seventies, surely making a grand statement. Bruce's depressing stories of the "losers," the wage-laboring men and women who get their weekend kicks by driving cars, hitting the boardwalk, and struggling through relationships, are inspirational and moving to someone of any economic standing. But outside of the lyrical content, the songwriting is phenomenal. The verses, solos, hooks, instrumentals, are all perfect. This is the album, to me, where the E-Street Band comes out of the background (although you could certainly say the same about The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle). Clarence Clemmons' sweet sax riffs, Gary Tallent and Max Weinberg's valuable contributions, and Steve Van Zandt's backup guitar simply add to the perfect product that is "Born to Run." The music is incredibly catchy, and each song in its own is a separate masterpiece. These are the kind of songs that will remain with you forever for numerous reasons, from the lyrics, the hook, the instrumentals, and the arrangement. If you own five music albums...make sure one of them is "Born to Run."

The first song is the rock n' roll classic "Born to Run," where Bruce evokes the spirit of Roy Orbison to create a simply beautiful rock and roll song, undoubtedly one of the greatest ever. And the twangy, piano-heavy rock of the joyful "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" makes just another absolutely timeless song. "Night" is an incredible ride through the nightlife of New Jersey, and it showcases the band in the spotlight. "Backstreets" is nothing short of incredible, from it's pumped-up intro with the piano, organ, and guitar to the rallying late-song chorus. The title song is certainly one of rock n' roll's finest, just a perfect song to me. "She's the One" and "Meeting Across the River" are probably the two lesser known songs from this album, but both embrace the musical and emotional spirit of the rest of the album. The final song is possibly my favorite, "Jungleland." Simply an amazing rock song.

If I haven't been able to express it to this point, "Born to Run" is a purely astonishing work of rock n' roll music that can be enjoyed on so many levels. Young listeners just getting into rock and roll might consider making this one of their first purchases. Otherwise, this is simply a must-have piece to any musical collection.

What can I say.It was a revelation in 75 and is still important to me.When you have lived a song or the whole record,it is important to feel that way 0ver 30years later.

Born to Run is an incredible work---by far one of the best rock records ever made. It remains timeless too---year after year.

Not a huge Bruce fan. Moreso because i was born in 1986 and the only songs i ever really heard of him was all of his new stuff, and some of the overplayed songs that came off his "landmark" recording Born In The USA. To me, he hit his stride early with this amazing album. With a song like THUNDER ROAD, how can it not be amazing, the title in itself blows you away. The title track is amazing, as is more or less every other track here. Honestly if you are questioning if getting into Bruce is worth your time, don't bank on Born in the USA to change your mind. Look back at Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. These are the albums that will move you, and my guess is that the songs on USA already make you sick and if they don't listen to classic rock radio for a day or two and then they will. Just my opinion

5 out of 5 stars I'm Pulling Out of Here to Win.......2007-04-17

If you haven't heard BORN TO RUN, please God go down to your local record store right now and pick up a copy, because this I'm not exaggerating when I say that this just may be the greatest record of all time.

The Great American Novel is the book, better than any other, that perfectly embodies the essence of America and American life - its hardship, its joy, its defeat, its triumph. You can think of BORN TO RUN then as the Great American Album. It is the culmination of the teen operas of Phil Spector, the rock n' roll fervour of Little Richard, the yearning loneliness of Roy Orbison, the incandescent soul of James Brown, the brilliantly surreal narratives of Bob Dylan, the streetlife drama of West Side Story, and then some. To speak of individual tracks is like focusing on a single figure in a great mural. Because as staggeringly powerful as the the crescendo of "Thunder Road" is; as much hope and raw energy are contained in simply the opening chords of "Born to Run"; as tragic as the heartbroken lovers of "Backstreets" are - BORN TO RUN is an entity unto itself, the place where the hunger of youth, the lure of the open road, the dream of a better life somewhere beyond the horizon, all the anguish and passion and promise of a final, desperate night, explode into glorious, all-consuming flame. Quite simply, this is what rock is all about.

I first discovered BORN TO RUN just before Christmas 2005, and I was enthralled from the very beginning. But this last year my circumstances conspired to transform it from merely an awe-inspiring record to something more - much more. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be there when this wonderful, amazing, awe-inspiring--THING--first came out. Few rock records can approach BORN TO RUN; even fewer can equal it; but I have yet to hear one that can actually top it. Honest to God, it doesn't get any better than this.

The first retooling of any album in the mighty Springsteen catalog is an exemplary labor of love by Columbia. The original 1975 release was the make-or-break record of Bruce's career and arguably still his best collection of material. It is presented here on one disc unsullied by outtakes or inferior versions--just pristine digital remasters of those eight grittily romantic songs of street life that defined the artist's signature styles. The substantial bonuses are two new DVD programs, one featuring a full concert performance by Bruce and the E Street Band on their first date outside the U.S. at London's Hammersmith Odeon in November 1975, and the other a "making of" documentary including band interviews and contemporary concert footage. The whole handsome box truly honors a legendary recording while providing generous value for fans.

The meat of the bonus material is the London show. A mythology has built around it that the band were so disorientated by travel and culture shock and Bruce so enraged by label-generated hype that they gave one of the worst performances of their career. Primitively shot by today's standards, the footage captures the brilliance of the relatively new band's ensemble playing. Highlights include a "Thunder Road" accompanied only by keyboards that opens the show, fiery solos on "Kitty's Back," a dynamic "Saint in the City," and a number of songs that have long since been retired. It's certainly notable how pensive and joyless Springsteen appears when compared to his later, animated stadium persona, but it's also fun to see the far greater role as foil played by Clarence Clemons. As he now testifies in the sleeve notes, putting lie to the myth, on that night they had "gone for broke," and as this writer can bear witness, the British audience exalted the show as the arrival of the greatest live performer of his generation. --Rob Stewart

The Best of Bruce
by guest editor Steve Perry
Steve is the editor-in-chief of City Pages newspaper in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (1973)
The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street ShuffleAfter a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter. The prisoner-of-love romanticism of "Rosalita" and "Incident on 57th Street" hinted at what was coming, and this early version of the E Street Band--jazzier and more spare than later versions, thanks largely to David Sancious's piano--sounds great, if a little ragged, these many years later.

Born to Run (1975) and Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)
Born to Run Darkness on the Edge of Town These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after. The first chords of "Born to Run" sounded like freedom itself the first time I heard them on the radio, and the album lived up to them. "Thunder Road" is still the greatest rock & roll love song anyone's ever written. The record sounded so big and impassioned and propulsive it was easy to miss the dread running underneath it. Darkness... put the dread front and center. There are more of his best songs here than anywhere else, even if the sound is muddy and leaden at times.

Nebraska (1982)
NebraskaAfter The River (the best record that didn't make this list) and the ensuing tour answered his rock & roll prayers--he was a big star now, not just a perennial critics' favorite--Springsteen holed up in a rented house on the Jersey shore, where he wrote these songs and sang them into a four-track recorder in his living room. The tape was supposed to be a demo for the band, but after several false tries he concluded that the tape he'd been carrying around in his pocket was the record. Quiet and bleak, Nebraska nonetheless grabbed you by the collar and made you listen as surely as his rock & roll records ever had.

Tunnel of Love (1987)
Tunnel of LoveThe glare and hubbub surrounding the Born in the USA tour (the tour was great--the record itself overrated) made him pull back again, this time to write a cycle of songs about love and fear and self-doubt. After this, Springsteen's first marriage broke up, and he started a family with Patti Scialfa, disappearing for the better part of 10 years, notwithstanding the pair of not-bad, just-disappointing albums he released in 1992, Human Touch and Lucky Town.

The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995)
The Ghost of Tom Joad Some call it Nebraska II, but his second acoustic album was not a repeat of his first--the characters and settings had changed, and their circumstances were more expressly desperate, and social--though it did share the same interest in what happens to people whose isolation or marginal status renders them invisible.

The Rising (2002)
The RisingEverybody, including Springsteen, seemed to think it was a record about 9/11, but the subject was broader--death and loss as seen from more than halfway down life's road. Dave Marsh nailed it: "A middle-aged man confronts death and chooses life" Brendan O'Brien's production sounds great.

I would recommend the 3-disc remaster only for fans who are already familiar with the album and are further interested. The bonus material includes a "making-of" documentary and a live performance in London. Having seen Bruce live, I can say that the concert footage doesn't do him justice. The spectacle that is a Bruce Springsteen performance is a spectacular experience, and it's impossible to portray on video. Besides, Bruce is very young and appears a little overwhelmed in this footage, and I'm sure there's better available if that's what you're looking for. The packaging is pretty bulky. Old fans will probably enjoy the 30th Anniversary edition, but new fans should stick to the more economical Born to Run package.

5 out of 5 stars The Boss at his Best.......2007-05-29

What can you say but "The Boss" Springstein at his best. I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Still good after 30+ years on.......2007-05-13

I never would have purchased this set until I heard the live version of "Kitty's Back." Boom... Ordered it that night. Not only was the remastered CD a good trip past the years but the DVD! The band is tight and dressed out except for Springsteen. Made me dust off the Santana, Steely Dan, Van Morrison and Sinatra - believe it or not.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2007-05-07

The remastered album will only sound different from previous CD versions if you have very good headphones or a very good stereo, but the concert DVD (Live at the Hammersmith Odeon London 1975) and the documentary (Wings for Wheels) are worth the price on their own. There's also a booklet of small but sort of grainy pictures, taken from the tour and, possibly, the recording sessions.

The documentary has all sorts of interesting and funny insights into the production of the album, as well as insights into Springsteen himself. The concert DVD has shoddy picture, which is to be expected, but the sound quality and the quality of the performance itself more than make up for it. The picture booklet seems almost perfunctory, an afterthought, but even still, there are some interesting shots in it. And, again, the remastered audio will only sound different if you've got good headphones or speakers to begin with, but if you have that, it's wonderful.

If you're a fan, if you like good documentaries, or if you like a good concert on DVD, get this album. If you just want the songs and you're not an audiophile, just pick up the cheaper, non-30th Anniversary CD (which I don't believe was remastered, but I may be wrong).

5 out of 5 stars Great album and package.......2007-04-29

This is great stuff. The original album needs no introduction every track is a winner - its a 5 star album. From Thunder Road to Jungleland via Backstreets this is one of the great Springsteen albums. Perhaps what make this album standout from other Springsteen albums is its epic scale. This isn't prog-rock though, despite the length of some of the tracks. As I think Springsteen once said, he was trying to capture the drive of the Rolling Stones (at there early 70's peak), with the voice of Roy Orbison, and the production of Phil Spector. An ambitious combination, but the result is worth it.
The documentary DVD is interesting, but you may only watch it once - however documentaries are very subjective and what I found uninteresting you may love.
The concert DVD as other people have said is a bit dark! However, the performances are excellent, the E Street band are on fire, and I found it enthralling to see (or not!) Bruce and the band 30 years ago performing with such passion.
If you haven't already got Born to Run you should buy this, if you have, do what I did and get as a birthday present.

After laying down a memorable vocal on Artful Dodger's "Re-Wind," the biggest hit to date of the latest U.K.-spawned dance craze known as two-step, Craig David's debut record carries lofty expectations. Born out of the R&B/hip-hop and U.K. garage styles of artists like Romanthony, MJ Cole, and Timbaland, with dashes of spastic drum & bass-style rhythms and DJ scratches, two-step is waiting for its first major breakthrough. On his debut full-length, Born to Do It, it's immediately obvious that this breakthrough won't be supplied by David, only because his style isn't really proper two-step at all. His smooth tenor and hip-hop-oriented, verse-chorus-verse song structures are much more in line with the urban soul and new jack swing sound of artists like R. Kelly, Sisqo, and D'Angelo. Still, for an artist who just turned 20, this is an incredibly assured record with a sweet, romantic core that only a cold cynic could deride as youthful naiveté. In addition, while only occasionally hinting at the darker passions of true two-step, the record drips with an advanced rhythmic sense that manifests itself everywhere, from the clever wordplay in the lyrics of songs like "Fill Me In" and "7 Days" to the bells-and-whistles production on the giddy "Time to Party." For those after a true introduction to two-step, there are better choices (start with MJ Cole's Sincere, the Vital 2Step collection, or just jump a plane to London and go club-hopping), but still enjoy this record for its boyish pleasures, teasing sexuality, and irresistible grooves. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Believe the Hype .......2007-03-16

This album lives up to the hype and after listening to the album many times I now understand why there was so much hype over this album and why celebrities were raving about it. P. Diddy said "This is the soundtrack of my life" An artist like this and music like this makes me wish I still lived in England or at least kept up with British pop/music more because there are great artists and hidden gems over there like Craig David that don't get the respect or recognition in the United States, which is a shame. No British artists lasts or really go mainstream in the U.S unless they are the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Cold play, Elton John, etc. just to name a few. Your either born great or your not, and Craig David definitely is, but has not really bounced back in the U.S since this album and his sophomore slump. His third album was almost nonexistent and not really promoted. Come back Craig to the U.S we need more of your music.

5 out of 5 stars 5 years passed, and this album still gets 5 stars..........2007-01-03

talk about a one album wonder! (i hate saying that but....) :\

while its unfortunate his last two albums weren't nearly as enjoyable as this one, some of that could be blamed on how truly FANTASTIC "Born To Do It" is. some of it could also be blamed on the typical downswing some artists encounter after achieving fame and fortune, (money does change people!) but nonetheless, throughout the album, rarely does he mention materialistic pleasures in life.... rather, he totally reminds (those of you who are older) just what it's like to be young, and at that age, how some girls made you feel. i believe he was 18 or 19 when these songs were written so there's your explanation.

anyhow, here's something worth noting..... there are only TWO songs on the CD where he sings about being taken and how happy he is, the rest of the album is: falling out of relationships, going out and looking for a date or "a night of fun" (i honestly feel there's nothing with that unless you're TAKEN.... and you use a jimmy hat), or the regret of breaking up with a previous girlfriend.

i think Rendezvous is one of the best 5 songs ever written... by any musician. it just has an effect that is nearly impossible to match, from the lyrics to the deep melody to the entire flow of the song. the only thing i would've changed about that song, is lengthening the second verse. perhaps its nit-picking but hey, music is all opinion right? i just feel that its so refreshing NOT to hear women being objectified for a change!

i understand not everyone likes R&B, and also not everyone likes "old" music (even though this album's not that old) all i will say is, ultimately this CD is different. in a good way. it's uniqueness shines from start to finish, every track has its own way of pulling you in.

so i'm done telling you how i feel, go experience Born To Do It for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Born To Do It.......2006-12-20

I think David's career has kind of gone off the deep end since a la Outkast, but this CD is the real deal. Consistently good music throughout the LP and he never lets up. When I first heard the first single "Fill Me In," I was not the least bit impressed. While I did eventually warm up to the song, I still think it is one of the weaker songs on the album. This CD screams urban soul, and David fills the role to perfection. Songs like "Rendezvous," "7 Days," "Walking Away," and "You Know What" are just some of the hits peppered across the album, and there isn't one song that I have to skip past. While I am not a big fan of David's subsequent music, there is no denying that Born To Do It is a primer for all American R&B artists.

3 out of 5 stars 'Born to Do it' could form a little growth........2006-07-24

Craig David's voice smoothly delivers a simple line which comes across buttery with his British accent. Craig David's debut album is a good showcase. To me not all the tracks are solid but nevertheless Craig David shows he has talent in abundance.

The singles `Fill Me In,' `Seven Days,' `Walking Away,' and the Artful Dodger collaboration `Rewind' are definitely the strongest songs on this album. This album doesn't contain all that many garage tracks, instead possessing more of a light R&B feel to it.

Some tracks like `Once In A Lifetime' and `You Know What' can get a tad bit boring for my liking, but the brilliant `Walking Away' and the Latin-tinged `Seven Days' display David's vocal dexterity at his best. `Fill Me In' is a catchy song with clever wordplay about how Mr. David gets it on with the girl next door. In "Follow Me," the sexy way he pronounces "to my bedroom" is enough to create Goosebumps down one's arm. `Rendezvouz' is a decent song that shows the flexibility in David's voice. `Bootyman,' `Can't Be Messin,' 'Round," are three track where David impresses his vocal speed which I feel he shouldn't do much of because it personally doesn't fit him.

I would actually give it 3.5 stars instead of 3 due to the various styles. This album is definitely a unique, fresh style of R&B, and is worth picking up even though it's a LITTLE-BIT incomplete ;)

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2005-08-17

I usually don't do these review things, but I do read them. However, I could not see myself passing this review up. This cd was unbelievable. Hearing "Fill Me In" again, I had to buy this cd. And to my surprise just about every song was as good as his hit single. Born To Do It turned to be one my best cd's in my collection, and one of my favorites.

The Innocence Mission have, over the course of a decade, created a half dozen albums which celebrate small pleasures, fragile details and the wistful edges of life. As the title suggests, Now the Day Is Over offers a set of lullabies. The dozen covers and one original were not all written as bedtime reveries, but it's a testament to the graceful nuances Don and Karen Peris that such a familiar song as "What A Wonderful World" can bring out the twinkling stars of nighttime with heartfelt purity. Free of embellishments, either internal or studio created, Karen's vocals are at once magical and direct. The trio has done much more than to simply streamline or slow down these selections, they've found the core of each number and built around it only that which is necessary. -- David Greenberger

2 out of 5 stars Innocence Mission is an appropriate name.......2007-06-02

Not the worst cd I have and certainly not offensive. However, lacks depth, character, and content. Could be good for the kids. Bought it because I fell in love with a track I heard on Radio Paradise. Overall I could have spent the money in other ways.

2 out of 5 stars Sickenly too sweet.......2007-05-12

I am new to the Innocence Mission. We have a one year old baby, so a friend gave us this CD as a gift. For me, Karen Peris's voice has the "nails across the blackboard" effect on me. She has no range and her voice is cloying. I am not expecting rock 'n roll or anything like that, but I just cannot find anything attractive in her voice. She absolutely "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," a classic and a song that I want to associate with my relatively unspoiled childhood. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely love this album.......2007-01-12

I play this album as part of my daughter's bedtime routine. I absolutely LOVE it. Has such a beautiful calmness to it. And as I sit their rocking with my daughter before I put her in her crib, it often brings both smiles to my face and tears to my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars I Love You, Innocence Mission........2007-01-04

In the winter of '89-'90, I picked up The Innocence Mission's eponymous debut on cassette one evening in a mall in Muncie. During my solitary rural Indiana backroads return to Taylor Univ., I was introduced to the delightfully solid intangibility of these troubadours of Heart, Soul, and Mind. I wanted Don and Karen Peris to mother and father me, or to marry Karen, or to be a brother or sister of one, to experience in my life the meaningful connections that in song resonated on and strong without dwindling into the inevitable nihilism that so much of art does nowadays. (Soon realized they were Catholic Universalists or something like that.)Fan for life.

And so, I kept up with their oeuvre. Enjoying the experimental phases of beauty along with the return to simple folk beauty. "Bright as Yellow", on "Glow", piqued the world's interest on the "Empire Records" soundtrack. They toured at least a little with Lilith Fair one year. I found later they've done a blatantly spiritual album "Christ Is My Hope", and that Don (genius of guitar understatement/suggestion) has a couple of his own albums out. I still need to get those 3.

Anyway, the idea of a lullaby album from The Innocence Mission is so perfectly obvious that I never expected it. I mean, she sang songs to her "Someday Coming Child" (on "Umbrella") years before she birthed!

It is as perfect as it could be. Minimal in performance, maximal in effect. (With 3 little boys, I'm a connoisseur of artfully-lulling lullaby albums. Get the Disney Lullaby Album too--no, really--Greg Diakun and Fred Mollin create real art right under DisneyCorp's nose.)

Finally, Karen can sing me to sleep--and my family too.

5 out of 5 stars works beautifully.......2006-10-18

I am a mother of twins and this CD was given to us as a gift. My babies fell asleep to this time after time and it was pleasant listening for both mom and dad. I plan on giving this as a gift to all my new parent friends.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

3 out of 5 stars Lovelorn and yearning pop-punk with a smile.......2004-04-22

The Smoking Popes made nary a dent in the music world, but at least they brought something fresh to the table. Fuzzy guitars and punk rock tempos backed the lounge-lizard stylings of vocalist Josh Caterer and his nostalgic, matinee-era vignettes about the trials and tribulations of good ol' fashioned love. Upon hearing his vocal stylings, you'd think the guy transported through time from the 1940s, only then to log hours on end at Punk U feverishly studying the Ramones and Buzzcocks.

"Rubella," "Gotta Know Right Now," and "Need You Around" paint a picture of youthful, starstruck, obsession and longing. While sincere and snappy, these tunes also hint at an underlying insecurity and awkwardness indicating that the distance between the parties in question is likely farther than it seems. Regardless, the music chugs along, shimmering at times, with rather convincing Cheap Trick-style guitar solos abound. Themeatically, the album becomes a bit monotonous, and with such a brief set, that is definitely an offense worth noting. Some songs fall rather flat along the way, with "Can't Help the Teardrops from Getting Cried" being a particularly cringe-inducing mis-step. Although slightly less than stellar, this album does provide a delightful ride in which one can drop the top, crank the radio, and reminesce of that high school crush that you never could quite manage to catch up to.

5 out of 5 stars Fab.......2004-02-13

Read this while reading Richard Craze's The Voice of Tobacco and have a ball - great CD, great book.

4 out of 5 stars THE BOYS IN THE BAND.......2003-03-12

Teen-age love angst with a peculiar feminist slant from three brothers?, cousins?, with the same last name of Caterer and a drummer who make up the disbanded but fondly remembered 'Smoking Popes'. This is breezy power pop with a dominating lead guitar, a little like 'The Smiths' or 'Talking Heads', but without the psyche hangover of pent up emotion. Singer and lyricist Josh Caterer clearly wants something but is it the girl or just the girl's dress? His quest for love's renewal is so insistant, he sounds on the verge of becoming the woman he wants. "Just Broke Up" and "Need You Around" are great radio songs, if only there was a radio station that would play them.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best albums you never heard.......2002-02-19

Even though the smoking popes are history, this cd is one of the best rock albums out there. The songs are simple but they sound really good; they get in your head stay there. I wish this band could've gotten some support from their label, then they might still be around. Oh well, there is always N SYNC.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best unheard ofs around.......2001-06-05

Smoking Popes aren't the biggest band in the world, but if you have ever wonder what it would sound like to have the voice of a lounge singer backed by the guitars of a band like Weezer or Blink 182, this album is a must buy. It's one semi-hit, "Need You Around" is a beautiful example of the bands break-neck speed and soothing lullabye sounds simultaneously. A big fan of their third album, Destination Failure here, which was marketed more careful and probably more successful, I would still have the say the ten songs on this album top it by a great deal. Rubella will make you want to jump, My Lucky Day will make you want to smile, and Adena will make you want to croon along. Take a risk on the Smoking Popes and you'll wonder how you lived without them.

Austin scene queen Price's sixth album is another enjoyable exercise in her signature "hippie blues" stylings, a comfortable cross-pollination featuring country, R&B, and a few jazz tinges. Price's imperfect but evocative voice is showcased in front of outstanding instrumental work, especially from acoustic guitarists Rich Brotherton and Casper Rawls, while legendary guitarist James Burton provides touches on nine of the 13 tracks. Strong songwriting, from sources as diverse as Walter Hyatt ("Get the Hell Outta Dodge"), Dr. John (the previously unrecorded "Clouds"), Mel Torme (the title track), and longtime Price associate Gwil Owen, gives the singer ample opportunity to work her relaxed wonders. The songs are short and to the point, and Price and her sympathetic sidemen make each note and every well-turned phrase count. The album, dedicated to the late multi-instrumentalist Champ Hood, concludes with "One of These Lonely Days," an atypical but successful foray into an expanded sound featuring the Tosca String Quartet. --Michael Point

4 out of 5 stars Fairweather Love.......2004-01-17

"I want to live in a beautiful garden, I want to lie where flowers bloom, I want to sing what the birds are singing, I want to fly just like they do," Toni starts on a folky hippie tune complete with acoustic guitar on a track that is as gorgeous as it is retro. Toni throws Blue into jazz gear on the sweet shuffle "Black & Blue Heart," "It seems like I just give up, but maybe I ain't very smart cause I keep on falling in love and breaking my poor old black & blue heart." "You Don't Love Me" turns back the clock to the 1940s with its Billie Holiday light jazz feel. The title track written by Mel Torme would be at home with the last call at the Starlight Lounge. "Sad as It Seems" is a country weeper. "Blue River" (not by Eric Andersen) is a perky bluegrass hoedown with Casper Rawls doing the back porch vocals. "There's Nothing But Heartache" gives Toni's gorgeous voice a chance to float achingly around the melody on a sweet midtempo track, "There's nothing but heartache in loving you." Shelley King's "Tennessee Whiskey" sounds like a reincarnation of Bobbie Gentry. Dr. John's "Clouds" is given a great soulful reading with James Burton's loping guitar. My favorite track is the bluesy midtempo "Rain Down Tears," "When you're out there in this world alone, there'll come a day when you'll miss this happy home," she sings about a fair-weather love. Gwil Owen's "Not Coming Home" has a lovely melody with the soft acoustic guitar backing Toni's aching vocal. "Get the Hell Outta Dodge" is pure Texas swing. The CD concludes with another slow Gwil Owens' tune, "One of These Lonely Days" with the gorgeous Tosca String Quartet bringing it to climax. There's no real addictive toe tapper like "Thank You for the Love" from "Midnight Pumpkin" on this set. Toni is taking her time. This is a great tear-in-your-beer set by one of our great female vocalists. Enjoy!

I'm not a particularly big country fan, but not only does this CD have great sentimental value for me, but it truly has great songs! There's not one I don't like. Still, I've tried to put them in the order that I like them best. Of course, that's difficult and some may be interchangeable depending on my mood.

Shadow Face--I love this song.
Heaven Can't Be Found--Same here.
Practice What I Preach--Good advice song.
Thanks A Lot--Cute. And sad. ^^
What It Boils Down To--'Tis great.
Buck Naked--LOL. This song is really great. And makes a very good point.
Keep Your Hands To Yourself--Good.
Born To Boogie--Indeed!
Young Country--I like them all, don't I?...
Honky Tonk Women--Yup, yup...

So basically, it's an all-around winner! Good for listening to continuously.

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of songs.......2004-03-19

As ever, Hank has written several brilliant original songs and added a few well-chosen covers - some country, some blues, a lot of rock - in short, a typical Hank album full of great songs.

My favorite song here is Young country, a mid-tempo country song that features several singers who were then (1987) considered to be the future of country music. Highway 101, Keith Whitley and T Graham Brown all achieved significant success over a short period but did not sustain it. Steve Earle is still doing well but not as a country singer. Marty Stuart was also reasonably successful for a few years. Butch Baker and Dana McVicker never made it. So Hank was wrong if he thought that these guests represented the future of country music, but nobody could have predicted the number of new stars that would emerge in 1989 and 1990.

As a contrast to Young country, in which Hank extols the virtues of mixing country with rock and blues, he covers Thanks a lot, a song originally recorded by Ernest Tubb, a traditional country singer of a bygone age. Country fans should also enjoy Heaven can't be found, a ballad of the type that we expect George Jones to sing, as well as the reflective songs, What it boils down to and Shadow face.

There are a number of hard rocking songs here including the title track, Honky tonk women (a cover of the Rolling Stones classic), Keep your hands to yourself (a cover of the biggest hit by the Georgia Satellites) and Buck naked. The closing track, Practice what I preach, is one of Hank's trademark songs in which he tells it like it is.

If you are interested in collecting Hank's albums, this should be high on your list.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Hank gold.......2002-04-18

This is more of the Rockin' Randall hank, with some good covers of Rolling Stones songs (Honky Tonk Woman) and other great songs.
there is a couple of country songs like the Tubb cover (Thanks A lot) but for the most part this is pure rock.

And as always hank is at the top of his game with this one, if you like hank then get this CD NOW! the price alone screams buy me.
if your new to Hank jr this is a good starting point, since there is no duds on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Bocephus is the king !.......1999-10-15

Hannk is a true master of his craft. He rocks hard and is a model for all rock and rollers. Hank Williams, Jr is marketed wrong, he is a Rock icon and the music in this album exmplifies that

5 out of 5 stars Grand Funk's BEST!.......2006-07-09

Grand Funk had many great albums, but none of them equals Born To Die. It is simply a fantastic album and even after all these years the songs hold up. (Dues is my personal favorite Grand Funk song of all time.) Every one of the songs on this album is excellent.

The true GRF fan needs only a few of their CDs:

1) Grand Funk Live - a must have

2) We're An American Band - for obvious reasons

3) Born To Die - see above

4) Caught In The Act - one of the best live albums of all time

5) .... um... that's it.. there is no number 5 unless maybe one of the retrospective CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Funk were never better then this!.......2005-11-04

One of the best CDs by Grand Funk Railroad, hard to believe this was overlooked by most of their fans. Radio charged hits ruled, and since no songs were strongly promoted on the radio, fans did not respond overwhelmingly to this release. After all, Sally was not the most catchy of the GFR singles. Locomotion, Footstompin Music, Some Kind Of Wonderful, We're An American Band, etc sold albums galore (no matter what the overall content of the album was). But of all their overall records, this was one of the best. The guitar work is stunning, the songwriting is TOP NOTCH here. It was sad that album and CD were not available for almost 15 years. Since my vinyl wore out a long time ago, I finally picked up a Russian bootleg many years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. NOW finally, they have released this great CD again with bonus songs, and remastered quality. If your a Grand Funk fan and never discovered this one before, do yourself a favor and order Born To Die. You won't regret it I promise!

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS BY THE QUARTET FUNK.......2004-12-14

I will never understand why this album sold very poorly. It had excellent songs that were going along with the newer style of the 1970s rock and roll music. My only complaint is that I think CRAIG FROST should have played a grand acoustic piano instead of the newer type of pianos. MARK FARNERS' "TALK TO THE PEOPLE," "MR POLITICIAN," and the title track are my favorite songs with outstanding arrangements on this album. The fast paced "MR. POLITICIAN" has an excellent guitar and organ opening riffs and vocalsby MARK and the band, "TALK TO THE PEOPLE" has excellent piano riffs by CRAIG, sax by WET WILLIE'S singer JIMMY HALL, guitar riffs by MARK, and outstanding vocals by MARK and the band, and the title track (written about MARK'S cousin who died in a motorcycle accident) is an outstanding beginner with the piano intro, outstanding vocals by MARK and the band, organ and guitar riffs. On the other hand, it was a shame about MARK'S cousin who died in a motorcycle accident. Meanwhile, the arrangement of "DUES" with the guitar solos, clavinet and organ riffs, the bass guitar, and DON'S lead vocal and drum playing reminds me of PINK FLOYD'S "ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PART 2." and the guitar solo on GOOD THINGS that features excellent vocals by MARK, piano riffs, and harmony vocals also reminds me of the signiture sound of PETER FRAMPTON'S guitar from "FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE". The arrangement of the soulful SALLY with MARK'S lead vocal, harmony vocals, the piano riffs, and harmonica by JIMMI HALL reminds me of either CHICAGO or JEFFERSON STARSHIP that later featured MICKEY THOMAS. The piano intro, drums, vocals, guitar, bass guitar, and organ riffs on DON'S TAKE ME are excellent, and so is his I FELL FOR YOUR LOVE that also features excellent vocals, guitar and organ riffs. At first, I thought that DON'S LOVE IS DYIN', also featuring excellent vocals, drums, bass guitar, guitar and piano riffs, was about the tentions developing between that band's main songwriters MARK and DON over what types of songs to write about. The group written instrumental GENEVIEVE (I have not listened to the live rehearsal version yet) is excellent too. Furthermore, the unreleased "BARE NAKED WOMAN" that is sung by MARK has some great rhythm and blues that recaptured the psychodelic days for the power trio GFR. I love this album a whole lot better than "GOOD SINGIN' GOOD PLAYIN'." Although a majority may or do not agree, I believe MARK wrote some excellent songs, if not outstanding, on this album like on "ALL THE GIRLS IN THE WORLD BEWARE."
