Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2007-03-22
I've owned the original Mono Vinyl and 2 earlier editions of the CD and the sound quality on disk 1 is incredible. Like hearing it for the first time. Disk 2 has a bunch of great rarities that would probably cost about $5,000 to get in their original vinyl though the sound quality is all over the place. I've always kept this in my 60's punk rock category rather than my blues. This is raw garage junk with the best English guitarist ever. My best purchase of the year so far.
Clapton is God.......2007-02-13
This album sparked the saying "Clapton is God" all over the U.K. This Album is where Clapton plugged a Gibson Les Paul into a marshall amp and changed rock music forever. This is my all time favorite blues album. Clapton plays guitar with a lot of fire. This collection is awesome.
Guitar Heaven By Eric Clapton!.......2007-01-09
Few albums have had greater impact than John Mayall's 1966 landmark "Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton." Released by the Decca label in Britain on 22 July 1966, literally days after Clapton left the Bluesbreakers and just a week before Cream's debut, it went all the way to #6, a pretty mean feat, since Mayall's band had never had a hit single. This may have been a first in Britain.
Of course, this is the album that set the blues and guitar worlds aflame and established Eric Clapton's name worldwide as the most passionate of musical interpreters. If you haven't yet heard "Beano" -- as it is affectionately known, because Clapton is pictured reading a "Beano" comic book on its cover -- then you ain't heard nuthin' yet! This is the stuff of legends.
From the album's first notes, you realize that you're in guitar heaven, as "Slowhand" shows us the way electric guitar can and should be played. Clapton's virtuoso playing is white hot throughout. Playing with a maturity beyond his 21 years, the young Eric Clapton so influenced the guitar world that Gibson eventually reissued the Les Paul model -- out-of-production since 1960 -- which Clapton then played.
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers served -- and serves still today -- as a finishing school for great musicians and sidemen (Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, John McVie, Jack Bruce, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Fleetwood and others). Mayall's proselytizing the blues (he's 73 years old!), his songwriting skills, and his other musical talents should not be ignored nor taken lightly.
Great Album - Disappointing Reissue.......2007-01-08
Another attempt to issue the definitive edition of the legendary Bluesbreakers album that falls slightly short of the mark. The mono and stereo mixes on disc 1 are excellently done but simply replicate the single disc issue featuring the same material released a few years ago. This, therefore, sheds no new light on this fertile period of the second British blues boom. Disc 2 features some BBC sessions along with the familiar Immediate and Purdah 45's and half a dozen live tracks, in poor sound quality, that have been available before.
This is a big disappointment and is a missed opportunity which could have been avoided if the compilers had made any attempt to research the easily available archive information from this time. John Mayall himself was known to have kept meticulous records of sessions, gigs, personnel and recording dates and I'm sure would have been more than happy to contribute his knowledge in order to preserve his legacy in the best possible manner.
Anyone expecting to hear more of Clapton's stunning guitar work from this time is in for a big disappointment. Many of the songs from the BBC sessions presented here have nothing more than rhythm guitar low in the mix. This is the case with the first three songs on disc 2 and despite the session date given being after the point where Clapton joined the band, I suspect it was actually recorded earlier with Roger Dean on guitar. The three songs from the October 25th session are from the time when Clapton had taken a sabbatical and had been replaced by Geoff Krivit. The third BBC session featured on the disc includes only two songs out of at least five, and possibly six, which are known to have been recorded with Clapton in the band, one of those missing being a rare live version of the instrumental, Hideaway. This session has been bootlegged in excellent sound quality and so it's omission from this set is inexcusable.
All in all the "Deluxe" edition does nothing to enhance the importance and excitement of this classic album and the poor selection of additional material on disc 2 turns what should have been a worthy project into a complete waste of time and money. Five stars for the original album - 1 star for this reissue
Beano plus....this package is a must for Eric Clapton fans........2006-12-01
This is a two-disc deluxe edition of the famous & influential "Beano" album. Disc one contains both the mono original release (1966) and the stereo version (1969) of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album.
For a review of disc one, I would refer you to many existing reviews of the original release of this important album. I can add little to all that's been said before, other than to say listen carefully to Have You Heard and Stepping Out. And Ramblin' On My Mind features a young Eric on vocals in the style he came to develop in his solo career.
Disc two (the reason I bought the deluxe edition) contains 19 extra tracks, and is the interesting part if, like me, you already own the original version of the Bluesbreakers album on CD. Extra tracks 1-13 are both live and in the studio. For instance, there are some BBC radio live in the studio broadcasts from 1965 & early 1966 and some recording studio session tracks, which predated the album. Sound quality is quite good on tracks 1-13 and a couple of those tracks highlight (even at that early stage) Eric Clapton's playing in the style he is known for.
But best of all, extra tracks 14 to 19 were recorded live at the Flamingo Club in London in March & April 1966. Those recordings are often primitive, raw, muddy & distorted, but you'll hear some of Clapton's most fiery and fluid playing on the blues guitar standards 14.They Call It Stormy Monday, 17.Have You Ever Loved A Woman and 19.Hoochie Coochie Man. Stormy Monday is the same track that's on John Mayall's Looking Back, and tracks 17 & 19 (above), amongst others, are the same tracks that were released on John Mayall's Primal Solos. There are nevertheless 9 unreleased tracks on disc 2.
This album is from the era when Eric Clapton played a Gibson Les Paul and developed his reputation as "God". It's a must-have album for Eric Clapton fans, and this deluxe edition, packaging the original album, 19 extra tracks and a 20 page booklet, gives you the best comprehension of how it all happened. As they say, the rest is history.
.....and whilst I have praised Clapton as the musical giant he was to become, credit should be given to John Mayall for being an astute & influential band-leader, mentor to a young Eric and a catalyst of the London blues scene.

Zu & Co !!! FANTASTICO !!!.......2007-07-12
Absolutely fantastico !!!
He is truly one of the best world artists and can interpret any and all types of music. The proof see how many musicians LOVE to play with him !!
Amazing studio-CD of Zucchero.......2007-03-29
This is a studio-CD with more songs then on the live DVD of the ZU & CO performance in The Royal Albert Hall.
It is a pleasure to listen to the high quality songs (solo and harmony) of Zucchero with world famous artists like Sting, Mouse, Pavarotti, etc.
Drive in your car for hours and hours listening to this CD and you never want to stop.
Awesome.......2005-09-26
I can't stop listening to it or thinking about it. Great variety of music on one CD. Wonderful collaborations with various artists. Zucchero is awesome!
The ultimate album "passion".......2005-02-21
Probably one of the best album's I've bought yet. I have never heard a multi artist album collection of this caliber from start to end. (Hey Man / B.B. King / zucchero) how long I have been waiting to get this on CD. I first heard it sometime back on a Pavarotti DVD. Very surprised to hear Marcy Grey bring on with the big name's good on her. Every song on this album goes deep and finds the roots of life. You want to cut yourself away from the rest of the world then listen to this on surround sound and be at piece with your self. To end off, if you ever want to make a unforgettable impression on your partner have a candle light dinner and whip this CD on. Say no more.
Diverse...........2005-01-24
I first heard this CD in a restaurant and the voice whom caught my attention was Macy, girl! I asked the restaurant owner about the music, he happily obliged. I love the diverse mix of music. Each song captures each respected musician/artist in his/her own element. I enjoy the lyrics, however, the raw sound of each instrument puts me in a trance and offers a deeper appreciation for culturally diverse music. My favorites are with Miles Davis, Macy (of course) Sheryl Crow, Deloris O'Riordan and Cheb Mami. I had to buy a second copy, I wore it out.....Oh yeah, I am also diverse in my bloodline, no bias here.

Not for all tastes (or pockets) but ineffable, enchanting, and profoundly aesthetic........2006-12-06
Upon reading the titles of the tracks on "ER," I was prepared for a Windham Hill sampler of programmatic "nature-music" pieces. But Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer's muse, it soon becomes evident, is more closely related to the genius presiding over "In a Silent Way," "Bitches Brew" and similar projects by some of Miles Davis' '70s progeny. It's New Age music with a beat, but with nuanced textures mixed so deliberately and motifs insinuated so subtly that the inattentive listener is likely to miss altogether the gossamer fabric of these fragile yet frequently appealing, inviting constructions.
Molvaer's trumpet is too much in the background for this music to be mistaken for a Miles Davis session. Instead, the horn becomes another vibrant freqency floating in the sonic ether, whether producing muted plaintive sounds without the mute or suggesting a momentary chill when Molvaer blows through his mouthpiece sans horn. Even the multiple tracking of the instrument along with the layering of bird calls and human voices does little to disturb the Noh-like stillness of "Water," following "Softer" like diaphanous gauze yielding to the glimpse of a golden carp suspended in a moon-lit pool.
"Only These Things Count" is verbalized, sung moreover in English, thus threatening to rupture the listener's connection with the safe and magical harbor of the musical Zen garden. But soon the churning textures of the accompaniment lead to another quiet, intimate moment during which Molvaer's breathy trumpet supplies incandescent incantations over a single sustained pitch, a note evoking a wordless plainsong resonating with the dynamic energy field of consciousness itself.
The next piece, "Darker," momentarily establishes an almost funky groove, perhaps Molvaer's turn to run the voodoo down, but again he moves skyward, as "Feeder" offers the most extended, extreme trumpet solo on the CD--loud in dynamics or high in register only relative to its previous unobtrusive presence. The role of the trumpet as an "individual" voice is an open-ended question in music of such exacting scale and ecological balance.
"Dancer," the final piece--or, more precisely, movement of a continuous work (there are no silences between the compositions)--is descriptive of the acoustic properties of the piece itself, which emphasizes the rhythms of primitive percussion. But in its metaphoric invoking of dance, it's also an interpretive, revelatory key to Molvaer's paradoxical and poetic, even mystical, compositions that blur the lines between soloist and accompaniment, text and context, confounding any attempts at easy categorization of this music.
The listener's epiphany is that "ER" is, above all, a delicate but vital and indivisible organism, recalling if not demonstrating the understanding implicit in the poet W.B. Yeats' famous question about the relationship between the artist and his creation: "How can you know the dancer from the dance?"
GREAT TRUMPET PLAYER, GOOD ALBUM.......2005-11-08
Nils Petter Molvaer has made some good music over the years. His trumpetplaying is very moody and he can set an atmosphere that not a lot of people can. The beats and electronics he uses are unique. The beats and sounds he uses create a lot of space in wich he can let a solo come to full advantage. The particular Molvaer-sound is only to be heard in the group of musicians Molvaer works with (the guitarist Eivind Aarset for instance; try his album Electronique Noir!).
I own three albums of Molvaer: Khmer, NP3 and ER. The first one (Khmer, 5 stars easily) is without a doubt the best. Most songs take their time to develop, but there always is a lot going on. Within the songs the tempo or volume build up. The beats are not the only things that count. And that maybe is Molvaer's trap: he manages to make his beats sound better and better, but they become so important that the rest of the music gets less attention.
NP3 had bigger beats than Khmer, but the album as a whole is a bit flat. But it's the most accessible and if possible happy one.
ER is down. Way down. And I like that. The album starts of really good. The first song is a killer! The second one is very sad. The intro's the songs lead to good beats that have a good dark atmosphere. But just like NP3 I miss the evolution of the songs beyond the beat. When Molvaer could pull that off again he could make a 6 star album.
There's one thing about the album I almost forgot to mention: there are voices on two of the songs of the album. The voice of Sidsel Endresen is a treat. She doesn't sound like a jazzsinger, and I/m glad about that. It wouldn't fitt. The singing is like a beat up Sally Oldfield or holds somewhere in the middle of Portishead and Clannad. Very tastefull!
When you don't own a Molvaer-album and you've got nothing against fantastic electronic beats, soundscapes and trumpet you must get yourself a Molvaer-album. This album for me is a five star album untill song number six. It's good enough, especialy the way the beats are recorded is good, but I believe Khmer has more to offer.

Zucchero and Co .......2005-09-30
Great listening!!
This album is a compilation of some of the special performances in that vein that is in some ways similar to the Santana releases of late using a variety of artists to complement the sound of the lead artist and encompassing a variety of styles. In preparation for the album, Zucchero re-produced, re-arranged, re-mixed, and even re-sang some of the material. The whole process took two years, but what results is an excellent compilation of music. -
A must for any Zucchero fan!!!.......2005-07-22
I adore this CD. It's worth the price just for the Macy Gray (Jeff Beck) duet in "Like The Sun" which is my favorite, if I was pressed.
If you already have 'SHAKE', you will recognize the John Lee Hooker duet from that cd; but you can't hear that tune too many times, either.
"Blue" from the BLUE cd is made fresh with the Sheryl Crow addition. I don't know who "Mousse T." is, but the "Mama Get Real" duet is a toe tapping winner.
I only have to skip past a couple of unfortunate songs here: the duet with Tom Jones (!!) being one of them. But there is Lots to love here like I said before-well worth the price for any Zucchero fan.
regards,
Laurie in Alaska

"The Final Album - The Ultimate Best Of" is their 13th album.

Great underrated group!.......2004-01-07
I first heard the new reformed Modern Talking while taking a trip to Germany. What great CD's they have been making!! The States are behind the curve as usual on this super duo. This is a great CD for the new listener also. Lots of great songs I've never heard before. Old ones and new ones a great mix. A greatest hits CD couldn't be better. If you like eruo pop/dance music you will love this CD. Get out your dancing shoes for this one!
Sad, but what can we do..........2003-07-31
It was sad to find out about the end of Modern Talking, but I guess Dieter and Thomas have a good reason for another split, this time probably more objective than when they parted ways in 1987. I have all their albums and enjoy their early music the most. Their albums from the 90s and this century offered less innovation and more repetition, however I cought myself still waiting for every new release just to hear one or two songs that would bring that good old feeling.
This last album is just a tribute to their career, nothing new or fresh. So I just give it 5 stars as a tribute to the band whose music means a lot to me.

A Hidden Classic.......2006-04-21
A friend of mine turned me on to the Buggles around the time the first Asia album came out (I was a fan of Geoff Downes and his incredible keyboard layout), and I ended up liking this album way more than "Age of Plastic," which to me sounds, well, plastic.
Tracks like "Vermillion Sands" and "I Am A Camera" have a very warm, 80's analog sound to them, even more so than anything on the previous album. This was one of the few albums I've bought in which I've liked every single track on it, and it's definitely got a special place on my iPod (lovingly encoded from vinyl, no less).
It's a shame that most people can't get past "Video Killed the Radio Star" when you mention the Buggles--if they even have heard of them at all. This album shows that not only do they have a sense of humor, they're damn good musicians too.
A surprisingly awesome (and different) follow up.......2004-04-11
If you're reading this review, presumably you've already heard "The Age Of Plastic" and are curious as to what adventures the Buggles got into after that amazing album. Well, this follow up won't rock your world in quite the same way as their debut. However, what "Adventures in Modern Recording" lacks in focus, it makes up for in experimentation, fun, and even beauty.
Even though "Age of Plastic" was mostly a fun little pop album, it had a subtle sense of sadness floating here and there, and a conceptual unity that "Adventures" doesn't have. But on this album, it sounds like Trevor Horn (essentially the only actual Buggle here, since Geoff Downes only plays on a few tracks) knew that he couldn't really follow up a debut that good, so he decided to just have fun in the studio. This album is much more playful, the lyrics are more surreal, and the production is a lot more... eccentric, I guess is the best word for it.
Highlights? "I Am A Camera" is in my opinion the best Buggles song ever recorded... quiet, distant, slightly melancholy, and just plain beautiful. "On TV" is the apparent attempt at a single, and it's a really fun, bouncy slice of synth-worship. "Inner City" and "Lenny" are a little odd, but they really get in your head after a while. "Vermillion Sands" is worth it just for that totally random synth/big-band section at the end. That's the kind of oddness that I live for.
A few tracks have some lyrical strangeness ("Waiting for the rainbow warrior"?!?), but the music more than makes up for it. If you're new to the Buggles, get "Age of Plastic". If your first thought after finishing that record was that you just wanted more, then you should definitely add this to your collection. I just wish the Buggles hadn't imploded so soon after this record ;_;... Ah well, you can't have everything!
Scientific, so scientific..........2003-11-23
Out with the old and in with the new, the rise of technology - the underlying theme of the Buggles. It's cleary been the case since the initial release of Adventures (just listen to restored versions of the works of Simon and Garfunkel, Bill Joel, Blue Oyster Cult, etc - how's that for technology?). Foreshadowing? Too easy. Insightful? Perhaps. Interesting? I'd say so.
The album packs an interesting punch. The different version of "I am a camera" included here (also appearing as "Into the Lens" from Yes's Drama, same lead vocal) is IMHO by FAR the better version. It's slightly understated and often down like a real sense of loss flows through it, but it lashes out, too. It's certainly one of the standout tracks.
Lenny ("scientific, so scientific... but you were walking on glass"), Inner City ("run... one last train for the inner city run..."), and Adventures in Modern Recording ("so carefully directed for modern mass appeal") are excellent tunes that easily could have appeared on Plastic Age, the Buggles awesome debut showcase. The other tunes are just okay.
I purchased the Japanese issue with the 3 extra bonus tracks (includes a saucier version of "I am a camera," a spicy "Blue Nylon," and a bbq "Fade Away." perhaps these are wholly accurate descriptions, or perhaps I am hungry for chicken wings. more than likely it's both). This CD is NOT complete without these three tracks. They really add to the dynamics of the compilation. The Japanese issues also includes all of the lyrics in Japanese and English. Theres's other material within the booklet, and if could read Japanese, I'd comment on it.
Adventures In Mediocrity.......2003-10-18
The adventurous "Living In The Plastic Age" was the kind of punch line that these two obviously ambitious Brits didn't want to have to keep repeating. So their follow-up was standard ProgRock from the early 80's. Think Genesis or Yes from the same period. Then remind yourself that Horn and Downes were members of Yes for the "Drama" album and tour. Then it was off to Super Producer status for Horn and arena slop for Downes as the keyboardist for Asia.
There are fleeting moments of interest to be had on "Adventures." The quirky "On TV" is the closest thing to what a fan of "Plastic Age" would have expected from these two. "I Am a Camera" sounds interesting in that you can play a game of 'which came first' between this version and the song recorded with Yes as "Into The Lens" on "Drama." And the title track has sufficient wallop to make the album open with promise, it's the strongest composition here. (Given Bruce Woolley's credit on the songwriting, it also makes you wonder how far back the song's history went.) Otherwise, it is average 80's new wave synth rock. Get this if you really want to be a completest into the Horn/Downes family tree, otherwise explore at your own risk.
the Buggles have fallen.......2002-04-13
Yeesh! This was one big disapointment, especially after paying nearly $[money] for this. If you're expecting another mind-trip like Age Of Plastic, you'll be sorely shot down. The Buggles broke up almost right after this, and it shows. Most of the songs here sound like your everyday 80's new-wave pop.
The only real notable one is the goofy bouncy "On TV". "I Am A Camera" is a reworked wimpy version of "Into The Lens", found on the Yes album "Drama", which Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn worked on, after Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman took a brief leave from the group. Some of the songs, such as "Rainbow Warrior" and "Inner City", will make you cringe, as Trevor's normally great singing voice turns into a mere annoying whine.
The album does have three bonus tracks: the somewhat catchy "Fade Away", "Blue Nyon" which is the weirdest Buggles song you'll ever hear, and a 12" mix of Camera which is essentially the same song, without the slow piano-driven intro. Even the liner book is a bummer, as its very lengthy and has a huge biography on the Buggles. Unfortunately, you're [stuck] unless you can read Japanese.
Bottom line: If you want a great follow-up to the immortal Age Of Plastic, get "Drama" by Yes instead. It's cheaper, much easier to find, and it rocks much harder.

The original Boogie Man!.......2002-12-28
The original, the one and only "Boogie Man",Walter Trout and Company do it again. This guy, in my opinion, is the opitomy of what it's like to rock, roll and still have enough blues for those of us that love the blues.
Transition :one of the best.......2000-06-14
I have been a Trout fan since 1984 and think of this as one of his best. It really captures a lot of different styles melded into one. It's a real driving force. It will grow on you with age, if you can keep up!
