A bargain if you haven't heard these pieces before.......2006-10-22
Every CD on here (seven in total) were recorded recently from 1985 being the oldest(CPE Bachs Berliner Symphonies) and the early 90s for the rest. The sound quality is excellent on all the discs but the first one recorded in 1985 because it's kind of hard to hear the oboes and horns. All the cds in this set are digital recordings. This set includes music by Carl Phillipp Emanual, Johann Christian, Wilhelm Friedemann and Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach.

A RARE PERFORMANCE EXHUMED!.......2007-05-14
This extraordinary performance of Alban Berg's masterpiece "Wozzeck"
belongs on everyone's wish list. Nothing prepared me for the power of
Tito Gobbi's performance in the title role - and Suzanne Danco brings
her usual intelligence and musicianship (qualities that are practically
non-existent among singers in the 21st century) to the role of Marie.
Having loved the music of Alban Berg for 35 years now, I can truly say
this live performance is to be treasured!

This album is excellent! Three tubas and a euphonium. I especially love it for the beautiful Christmas half, tracks 18 thru 35. (It's not a new album, it's just the same album wrongly listed here as out of stock, under the title "Mighty Tubadours" [without the "The"] and a different ASIN.

Customer Reviews:
A Useful Introduction to the Ring.......2006-03-04
This CD was a pleasant surprise and can be recommended to anyone seeking a brief 1-CD introduction to Wagner's Ring, particularly at its bargain price. I hadn't expected much of it, since Haitink's complete Ring has received mostly unenthusiastic reviews, but it turns out be considerably better than I'd thought.
Let's back up a little and lay some groundwork: Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, his masterpiece, is a huge work consisting of four long operas. The best Ring on records is the Solti/Vienna Philharmonic version on Decca/London (14 CDs, recorded 1958-65), followed (not very closely, in my opinion) by the Bohm/Bayreuth version on Philips (14 CDs, recorded 1966-67). The Solti is a studio recording; the Bohm comes from live performances at Bayreuth. The Solti version has the best conducting, the best orchestra, the best cast, and the best sound. The reason these two versions are superior to any later versions is largely that the 1960s was the last decade when there were singers available who could cope with the staggering vocal demands of the Ring (in particular Birgit Nilsson, who sings Brunnhilde in both the Solti and Bohm versions). Today, alas, we lack such singers. Hence the Haitink Ring, recorded 1988-1991, has to make do with current vocal resources, which results in seriously compromised singing in some of the major parts. And the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has never been considered an orchestra in the top echelon.
So what's to like about this recording? First, Haitink, a frequently underrated conductor, proves, at least on the basis of what we hear here, to be an excellent Wagnerian, and he has this orchestra sounding world-class. Second, the sound is excellent. (I've rarely admired EMI's digital sound, but here it is first-rate.) Third, given the impossibility of representing the entire Ring on a single CD, this collection of many (22) brief snippets is as good a Ring "sampler" (for that is all it can be) as could be put together in 72½ minutes. Finally, we are spared most of the problematic singing, and what we get is good enough. James Morris, the Wotan, is excellent; his big, powerful voice, secure and authoritative, is just what's needed for the part. Eva Marton, the Brunnhilde, comes across as too much of a screamer, but fortunately we don't hear much of her here. Siegfried Jerusalem, cast in the impossible part of Siegfried, has a basically pleasing voice and sings intelligently and lyrically; he can't cope with the heroic demands of the role (no one else can either, since Melchior) but offers a sensible compromise. Many of the smaller parts are well taken; in particular I would point out the genuinely thrilling Ride of the Valkyries (with a fine group of Valkyries)-an electrifying performance that should be an ear-opener for anyone used to the usual orchestra-only version of this excerpt. Everything I hear from Haitink and the orchestra on this CD gives pleasure and satisfaction. He may not be the fiery, dramatic dynamo Solti is, but he understands this music and has it and his orchestra well in hand.
In short, if you want only a single-CD introduction to the Ring, this is a good choice, especially at its bargain price. (And if you're already a Ring buff but would like to sample the Haitink cycle, this serves well.) I think better choices (at higher prices) are the well-filled 2-CD selections of Ring highlights from the Bohm/Bayreuth cycle on Philips and the Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic cycle on DG. They are not without their problems, too, but they give you twice as much of the music (two and a half hours) as this single-CD selection, and hence a better idea of the Ring. And there is also a 1-CD selection of highlights from the Solti/Vienna Philharmonic cycle, offering 7 longer, more or less "standard" excerpts, mostly orchestral, instead of the 22 shorter (but choppier) and more varied snippets of the Haitink CD (and at "medium" price instead of budget price).
Asleep at the wheel.......2005-09-27
EMI took a big risk having Haitink conduct a complete Ring since he had never conducted Wagner in the opera house. He turned out to be disappointing all around, with no special insights and a tendency to underplay the most famous orchestral moments. We can mercifully skip over his adequate-to-dismal cast, as even this budget CD of excerpts barely manages to catch them in good form. Only the Barenboim set has worse singers, and that's debatable.
Release the budget Ring NOW!.......2004-02-18
Practically every Ring set or an individual recording is full-priced in the market. The popular ones (Solti/VPO, Boulez/Bayereuth, Levine/Met) are priced at full 4-CD price and vintage recordings by Furtwangler and Knappertbusch are either hard to find, expensive, or simply difficult for newbie listeners to listen because of the mono sound . Well, I guess Haitink's original set seems to pale in comparison with these titles above, but based on the highlights, it sounds just decent. From the highlights, the singing is surprisingly top-notch. Haitink is the one expert on spaciousness of sound. I find the Bavarian Radio a better orchestra than his Concertgebouw for simply more weight in their playing. The Concertgebouw has clarity and spaciousness, but listening to the orchestra is like drinking Diet Coke with ice.
It would be great for EMI to do us a justice and release a full Haitink-Ring set.
A Good Intoduction to the Ring Cycle.......2002-02-11
The perfomances on this CD of highlights from the Haitink,BRSO
recording of the "Ring" on EMI might seem to pale in comparision to the other ones. But I think that one advantage that they have is that they are not "overblown" or "Overdone" The Haitink pays homage to other recordings by having some "sound effects" like the Solti-Culshaw recording on Decca, the singers are all well cast, and do as good a job singing their parts as can be expected. I think it would be good of EMI to re-issue this Ring
recording on CD as a budget set It deserves to remain in the catalog and not be put in limbo. I also recommend the Mozart Magic Flute Hightlights CD also from Seraphim.
Worst Ring I've heard in years.......2001-04-11
This is the worst recording of music from the Ring that I've heard in years. The singing is terrible, and the orchestral playing is boring and ugly. This is definitely the Ring to avoid. If you want some highlights, try a sampler of one of the more successful recordings of the Ring: Karajan, Solti, or Bohm. There are plenty of samplers out there from these recordings, any of which would be more musical and more exciting than this.
Try Karajan if you want beautiful and thrilling music, Solti if you want to test your car stereo, and Bohm if you like the excitement of a live recording. The latter two of these three are less in tune than the Karajan, but there is some thrilling singing on the Solti set - particularly the incredible Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson.

FOUND!!!.......2007-05-02
My brother brought the cassettes when they first came out years ago, over time they were lost or eaten by various tape players. I have spent years looking for a copy, cause my whole family loves it. Now HOORAY!!!!! I FOUND IT!!!!!!! I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW HAPPY I WAS WHEN I FOUND IT.
Wow . . ........2007-01-13
I found this album while searching for music by Philip Quast. I've studied theatre, and I'm a fan of some more "obscure" musicals, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a musical based on the Trojan war.
The music is excellent, and the cast is/was more than up to singing it. I would love to see it on stage.
HIDDEN GEM.......2006-06-21
It is such a shame that this fantastic musical is tucked away in relative obscurity. The music is very haunting and catchy with some great lighter pieces. The original cast members have very diverse talents and give the score great depth. Please someone produce this wonderful musical.!!!!!!!
Simply Stunning.......2004-06-06
This musical was recorded way back in 1990 and it is only now that it may get the worldwide attention it deserves. This is the story of Paris and Helen of Troy which of course is now very topical. The recording features the best from around the world and Australia. It is simplt stunning! If Jon English' name was Andrew Lloyd Webber, this would have benn playing to packed houses around the world for the last 15 years. Don't hesitate on this...buy it and impress your friends with a sensational buy!!!

Evocative Classical Masterworks Meld Nicely for the Scenic Open Road.......2006-09-20
I'm all for repackaging great music under the guise of something more digestible to the general public. That's why Sony Classical's Drive Time series is an intriguing marketing idea which groups classical pieces of a similar subgenre using a world-renowned roadway as the unifying theme. This one uses the Pacific Coast Highway as the constant imagery, and Gilbert Hetherwick (credited with the concept) and reissue producer Richard King have chosen pieces that have a pastoral, often Nordic feeling to them. Various world-class orchestras from London to the Boston Pops play the pieces impeccably under the batons of Lorin Maazel, John Williams and Sir Colin Davis among others.
The program opens appropriately with Beethoven's pastoral Symphony #6 (1808), which was actually subtitled "Recollections of Country Life", a stunning melding of woodwinds and strings somewhat similar in tone to Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". Then we get music from a brethren of Scandinavian masters. Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is well represented here with two pieces from his symphonies, the introductory Allegretto movement of #2 (1902) and the concluding Allegro Molto movement of #5 (1915), both of which show a strong sense of his dramatic use of folk melodies. There is the famous "Holberg's Time Suite" (1869) by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg with its fanciful opening flourish, as well as Danish composer Carl Nielsen's Symphony #3 (1911), which works beautifully within the sonata form.
There are three modern pieces, tonally compatible with the other compositions - Joaquín Rodrigo's beautiful piece for classical guitar and orchestra, "Concierto de Aranjuez" (1939) - my personal favorite of the entire disc, Alan Hovhaness' contemplative 1955 "Mysterious Mountain" (Symphony #2), and Michael Torke's exciting "Javelin" composed for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. All together, this is well over an hour of splendid music, and to Sony's credit, they do evoke the fog and cold breezes coming from the Pacific. Marketed as "specially mastered for the car audio experience", it is well worth keeping in your car CD case. Other CDs in this series include Route 66, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Autobahn.

A masterpiece by Ellison!.......1999-03-22
This cd features widely differing works by young American composers, all very well handled by Block and the Slovak Radio Symphony. However, it is worth buying for the Henry V ouverture by Michael Ellison alone. This composer simply shows masterful command of the orchestra. In this one piece he demonstrates a refinement of tone colour not unequal to a Debussy or Ravel, while at the same time preserving the edge and intensity of a Bartok. This music is a rare example of thoroughly modern music captivating the ear without refuge to neo-romantic platitudes. It is a genuine diamond. As a music student I strongly recommend this cd to any lover of comtemporary music, Ellisons ouverture might arguably be one of the last masterpieces of our century.

Britten Fare.......2006-04-01
Benjamin Britten left England to avoid the conflicts that were brewing in Europe, but living in America, he realized his voice was England's, and so Britten returned to England in the early 1940's realizing it was his home, and a new musical voice arose in him. His music, which up to that point, wholly embraced modernity, now also encompassed the English Nationalist sound as well, creating a distinctive, personal compositional style. The three works on this disk represent choral works after he returned to England: Spring Symphony, Five Flower Songs and Hymn to Saint Cecilia.
The Spring Symphony is scored for large orchestra, numerous percussion, mixed chorus, children's chorus, and soprano, alto, tenor soloists. In four movements, each has subsections describing some aspect of spring. The texts are taken from a wide variety of English poets: W. H. Auden, William Blake, John Milton, Robert Herrick, etc. The first movement (Introduction, Merry Cuckoo, Spring Sweet Spring, The Driving Boy, and The Morning Star) shows the wealth of variety in Britten's imagination. The dissonant opening describes nasty winter (with vibraphone) while the chorus beckons the sun to some out. The Merry Cuckoo, for tenor and accompanied by 3 trumpets, is a fanfare of the opening of spring; while Spring Sweet Spring is an evocation of the coming spring, in dance time, complete with soloist bird calls. The children's chorus sings what could be a folk song it is so upbeat and catchy in a charming description of the Driving Boy, with soprano solo; and the Morning Star hails the coming of spring with chorus and brass alone. The second movement (Welcome Maids of Honor, Waters Above, and Out on the Lawn) is the symphonic equivalent of the slow movement. Invocations dedicated to virgins and spring, spring rain, and the spring constellations and departed, are uniquely put into musical terms. The third scherzo movement (When Will My May Come?, Fair and fair, and Sound the Flute) speak of love and frivolity with spring in an ecstatic manner. The finale is a raucous waltz, complete with cow horn (London, Do Thee I Present) a personalized invitation to England to welcome spring. The 41 minute symphony uses so many techniques, varying orchestrations, and texts surrounding spring, it is really an experience like no other.
St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music and musicians, often depicted with an organ. Britten sets a text by W. H. Auden and put the work in three contrasting sections for unaccompanied chorus. The opening has a lilting feel, but very homophonic, almost organ-like, with gently shifting harmonic colors. The second section is a patter song in imitation, taken here at lightning speed. The third section is prefaced by a return of the opening, before a march-like declamation in basses and horn-like calls in other voices. The work is beautiful, terribly difficult, Hymn to Saint Cecilia. It is standard choral repertoire, too often butchered; this is a great British reading, if not the finest on CD. Also unaccompanied, the Five Flower Songs carry the "spring" theme to its conclusion. Almost like secular motets, or a collection of songs, the pieces display Britten's inventive and varied styles, even without instrumentation. The texts are assorted English texts, again including Robert Herrick among others. The voices seem orchestrated, and take on the quality of an instrumental ensemble in their interesting voicings. Again, standard repertoire, each are a miniature choral masterpiece, balancing the delicate, whimsical, and passionate.
John Eliot Gardiner, with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Monteverdi Choir, give inspired, clean, fresh performances. This music, really not well known to the public, especially the Spring Symphony, is presented with energy, humor, and commitment. The DG sound is a sonic delight, featuring the 4-Dimension digital recording; especially the crisp, clear voices, not just from the excellent choirs, but also across the orchestra. The soloists featured on the disk are fine, as well as the Salisbury Cathedral Children's Choir. If you like Britten, you will definitely enjoy this disk. If you are interested in some "different" choral music, these are really first-rate performances and moving compositions. Recommended.
A Completely Charming Recording of Britten's Spring Music.......2006-02-02
John Eliot Gardiner conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus of London is three fine works in praise of spring and music in this excellent recording. Not that the initial recording of the magnificent and far too infrequently performed Spring Symphony Opus 44 conducted by Britten himself with a trio of brilliant soloists (now deleted from the recordings available), or the splendid recording of the work (with the Four Sea Interludes from 'Peter Grimes') by Andre Previn, the London Symphony and also a fine trio of soloists will be replaced by this CD, but the variation in approach to this complex work deserves all the recordings possible.
Gardner takes a very transparent approach to the Symphony and the result is a performance of crisp precision and delicacy. The soloists he has selected may not be big names but they each have pliant voices and superb enunciation of the poetry that makes this recording the most understandable of those available. Each of the poems is approached with the care of communication Britten demanded and the result is a captivating performance.
The added pleasure of this CD is the presence of the a capella 'Hymn to St. Cecilia' Op. 27, which again Gardner conducts with maximum effort to clarity of diction and mood. The soloists are excellent. The final offering is, appropriately the a capella choral work Five Flower Songs Op. 47. This type of programming is typical of Gardner's style and the three works together give a perspective of Benjamin Britten's genius not often heard. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 06
Good performance of a very tough work.......2005-09-24
The lilting title of "Spring Symphony" is misleading--this is one of Britten's thorniest works, and for me very hard to like. Gardiner gives a good-enough performance, not quite up to Previn's on EMI, which has much better vocal soloists, and nowhere near the composer's own version, wich unfortunately comes in mono only.
