Album Description

Throughout most of the '80s Perth band THE SCIENTISTS spewed forth a sound that was swampy, primal and modern-urban all at once. Their name has been dropped by NIRVANA, THE WHITE STRIPES, THE VON BONDIES and many more as a key influence of how they could reimagine rock n' roll. And along with THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, invented the inner city look of that era. The original line up of KIM SALMON, TONY THEWLIS,

Semi-legendary '80s Aussie scuzz-rockers reunite after two decades and play their "hits" without missing a beat. These guys (actually, the drummer's a girl) sound just as deranged on this well-recorded live set as when they first emerged from the primordial ooze, and Kim Salmon's vocals are arguably even better. The material holds up well too. Highly recommended for fans of the Stooges, the Birthday Party, the Cramps, the Gun Club, Sonic Youth ... and nitro-burning funny cars.

In the mid '90s, Wall of Voodoo mainstay-turned-solo artist Stan Ridgway bid farewell to the major label treadmill via Drywall's masterfully dark debut and embarked on an indie career as the more historically-rooted, acoustically-centered singer-songwriter found of the compelling Black Diamond, Snakebite and Anatomy albums. The original Drywall concept ("a trilogy of apocalyptic documents") seemed intended to variously antagonize his then-label, subtly evoke his Wall of Voodoo past and offer outlet for his latent "mad scientist" tendencies. But Ridgway has completed that decade-spanning triptych with an album that's closer in tone to his elegiac modern solo work (his main accomplices here are also the same, keyboardist/vocalist Pietra Wextun and guitarist Rick King), if no less thematically provocative than DW's first installment. The infectious, industrialized zydeco of "Goin' On Down to the BBQ" revolves around a typically debauched Ridgway storyline, while elsewhere Stan variously stirs in jazz (the saxed-up "Fortune Cookies"), cinematic cool (the evocative "Somewhere in the Dark" and "Rain On Down") and even folk conceits both nautical ("Abandon Ship," "Robbers & Bandits & Bastards & Thieves") and Celtic (Wexstun's haunting "Bold Marauder"). "The AARP is After Me" and tipsy "Something's Gonna Blow" are filled with typically self-deprecating Ridgway wit, while the electro-edginess of "In Total Focus" and "That Big Weird Thing" contrast sharply with the stark beauty of the morally ambiguous ballad "Buried the Pope." Drywall closes out their first trilogy in rich, expansive style - and ultimately leaves listeners hoping they'll embark on another soon. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Um...wow........2007-01-11

I love Stan Ridgway - witness my extensive collection of CDs and ticket stubs. I think he and Peitra are national treasures.
However.....
I have to say I found this album very hard to get my mind around. I am no stranger to music that is (more than a little) outre'. And I am willing to give anything involving Stan a chance. Several chances. But I honestly didn't enjoy this album. (Sorry Stan)

But it won't keep me from buying the next one!

4 out of 5 stars Righty likes track 16, whoot!.......2006-07-21

All of Stan's work has shown a deep suspicion of the industrial-military complex, heaped and blended with existential nihilism. I never took such a dim view of American life personally, but appreciated his artistic window into the darker side of society. For the record I'm a right-of-center, Republican-leaner who voted for Bush twice and I found track sixteen to be clever and, yes, a bit childish, but fun and I enjoy childish fun even when it steps on my idealogical toes. That being said the rest of the CD is delightfully quirky, loaded with imagery both dark and campy, and sprinkled with childish fun. And very true to Ridgway form this CD is yet another deadpan narrative description of the writhing scaly spectacle that is modernity's underbelly. It's kind of like David Lynch for the ears. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I didn't feel it rose to the level of "Work the Dumb Oracle".

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Strange / Pop Art for 2006.......2006-04-22

Continuing an on-again/off-again relationship with his Drywall side project that began in 1986 with Work the Dumb Oracle, the third album in Stan Ridgway's "trilogy of apocalyptic documents" isn't substantially different from his better-known solo work, at least on this 2006 release. His carnival barker vocals, bizarre lyrics, and shapeshifting cinematic soundscapes are in fine twisted form as the songs morph from the moody, bluesy harmonica-laced "Bury the Pope" to the more experimental subtle electronica textures of "Rain on Down" and the whimsical, Tex-Mex party atmosphere of "Goin' on Down to the BBQ." Co-Drywall conspirators/multi-instrumentalists Pietra Wexstun and especially Rick King are relegated to sideline status as Ridgway's distinctive vocals and lyrics dominate the proceedings. The diverse sounds combine aspects of Tom Waits (the percussive "The Alibi Room" sounds like an outtake from Rain Dogs), jazzy noir lounge ("Somewhere in the Dark"), Yello ("That Big Weird Thing"), and even world music ("Bold Marauder" is sung by Wexstun doing her best Grace Slick impression), but ultimately seem like Ridgway pushing his already elastic musical boundaries. At just over an hour, including a humorous bonus track that features sentences from George W. Bush speeches cut-and-pasted to mean something far different than what was originally intended, there is a lot to listen to here. Each track is overdubbed multiple times with layers of sound effects and instruments requiring repeated listenings to fully absorb. As with many Ridgway projects, the lyrical theme is obtuse but the music is so challenging, quirky, and innovative that the whole shebang is a mesmerizing musical trip. Anyone already a Ridgway fan will be thrilled, and open-minded newcomers might find enough of interest here to seek out his earlier, arguably more cohesive albums. Barbeque Babylon is a fun, often but not always lighthearted romp with the participants obviously enjoying themselves by painting a sonic palette the equivalent of '60s pop art. Part pastiche, part storytelling, and part experimental, the album finds Ridgway at the peak of his powers, creating music that demands attention even if at times it doesn't take itself seriously.

3 out of 5 stars Track 16 is ridiculous.......2006-02-10

While I have Stan's full collection of solo stuff and love it, this album may not stay in my collection. There are some fantastic songs and truly innovating and amazinginly talented musicality on this one that we expect and usually get from Stan by the truckload. But I'm writing my comments primarily for the untitled #16 track. I'm not a republican or a democrat. Politics has nothing to do with it but the disrespect and childish editing of the President is embarrassing. The time, technology and (what they may of thought as cool) effort that they put in to making this stupid and over the top ridiculous word editing joke ruins the whole album for me. Perhps a few lines intended to make a point and reflect a measure of personal view would be "artistic" and acceptable but Drywall goes way too far with what they're saying here. A display of that much anti-american sentiment makes me think Drywall should move to Iraq and open up a recording studio there and tour the middle east, North Korea and Afganistan. Free expression, personal point of view and the right to say them are God given rights. But track 16 is just simply bad form, bad taste and childish. I would feel the same way if they did this obsurdity to Clinton as well. Track 16 isn't politics just stupid, really stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Stan at top of form!.......2005-11-23

I'm here to tell you this is the best Stan Ridgway CD! A fan since the vinyl days of Wall of Voodoo, heard all the solo stuff (great, get it!), but this album is an absolute must buy. Killer stuff, classic Ridgway. The best yet!!

5 out of 5 stars Collector's Sedition Is Audio Refreshment.......2001-06-20

Tired of lyrical pablum? Tired of electronic, repeated drum machine rhythmns? Want something refreshing. Then you need to buy and listen to Kerry Livgren's "Collector's Sedition". Music is an art form, and Kerry Livgren and friends have sculpted another Mona Lisa with this CD. It's nice to hear lyrics and music that assume you have an intelligence level well above a primitive Neanderthal! The only sad thing about this CD is it doesn't have a wider distribution. Kerry Livgren gave us a wonder taste of intelligent music as a member of Kansas. Now, with his spiritual growth over the years, you have a CD that speaks to the basic questions of life in songs like "Sentinel" and "Hindsight", while you soar up to heaven with "Navigator". There's not a single song you won't appreciate. Kerry, keep writing and putting out great music like "Collector's Sedition"! Don't let this CD pass you by. Listen and let Kerry Livgren walk you into paradise!

5 out of 5 stars KL's Collectors Sedition varies in style but not quality.......2001-06-01

Some of the pieces sound like they could be reworked to fit KANSAS or AD and others just sound like something completely new for the Maestro--different but very good or great. Well the two instrumental pieces have very unique moods(take me to a new places in my mind)Am juengsten Tage is brooding with a ravellish melody at times and As it Should Be is well very festive and shows that KL has alot of funk for such a very white dude. ;-)

The Navigator and the Sentinel are two tunes that could've been Kansas tunes IMO--the Sentinel is a prog work and the Navigator is in a Dust/HO vien IMO.At Every Turn shows a strong celtic influence that is beautifully sung by KL's nephew who is a fantastic vocalist(he sings over half the album)--KL plays all instruments and does them all wonderfully(well the drums could be a bit better but even there his playing is impressive IMO)

If you are a Kansas FAN don't just listen and say it doesn't sound like Kansas--give it a few spins--KL has sounds and styles beyond the KANSAS field that are Magnificent IMO

The last tune called the DRAGON shows a certain Carmen Burana feel at times--very cool tune.I could go on & on.. but I will end this review by saying this a wonderful effort and very worthy of inclusion in any rock fans collection.

Made in USA in 2000, Serial# 0009, Playing Time 69:50

Hard to believe this is his 11th album already. I first read about this album while visiting kerry's website a while ago. It worries me when the artists says the songs are leftover material, unfinished tracks, etc. I see that, and I interpret that as "I had no time, no money, no inspiration. If you don't like it, that's why..."

Well, THANKS FOR THE WARNING! I figured "It's from Kerry Livgren, the mastermind and chief composer from KANSAS; it can't be that bad?!? So i broke down and bought it...

Guess what: this album is good! Not as much as my favorite, "Odyssey into the Mind's Eye", but GOOD! The songs are a bit eclectic, but Kerry's performance on guitars and keyboards is magnificent, and the vocals from all singers are clean and interesting. A few tracks have a KANSAS "aftertaste".

If this the kind of material he keeps as is "garbage", all I can say is: "When is Volume 2 coming out?"

4 out of 5 stars Don't Pass this one, Buy.......2000-09-15

Kerry Livgren ... immensely talented ... multi-instrumentalist, exceptional composer, effective communicator of the deep things of life ... one could go on and on ...

Those who have written Livgren off after the KANSAS hey-days have done themselves a great disservice ... Collector's Sedition is just the latest in the "prolific-ation" of excellent works by Livgren (check out When Things Get Electric, One of Several Possible Musiks, Odyssey into the Mind's Eye, Art of the State ... IF you can find them)

Collector's Sedition has diversity and some surprises but still has the classic KANSAS (or should I just say Livgren) flavor reminiscent of Kerry's earlier works.

Any KANSAS / Livgren or just plain good music fan should appreciate this fine offering.

Although several vocalists are used, Jake livgren is the primary singer. By the way, Jake is Kerry's nephew and not just a relative but an excellent vocalist to boot. Kerry has said that Jake is now his "vocalist of choice". As always, Kerry has chosen wisely ... and if you choose Collector's Sedition to add to your own collection, you will have also (chosen wisely, that is) ... ;-)

5 out of 5 stars We're not in Kansas anymore!.......2000-09-10

Ladies and Gentlemen, I see I am the first to weigh in on this magnificent offering. Kerry Livgren said that he was in a prolific period but who knew? That he could release two albums (Somewhere to Elsewhere, the new Kansas album, featured only Livgren penned tunes) of such power, such complexity, such artistry is quite simply amazing. As for Collector's sedition, it is not Kansas, not quite. Kerry always seeks to differentiate his solo releases from Kansas, and he succeeds here, but thankfully the success is limited. More than half of these songs could have easily been done by Kansas with slightly different instrumentation.

The musicianship- ok, I don't need to say much here, always fantastic. But the production here is of the same quality as Somewhere to Elsewhere, crystal clear.

The vocals- Kerry has brought back his two vocalists, Darren Rogers and Jason Beddoe, from When Things Get Electric, each performing very well on one song a piece. New vocalists perform on the rest of the album. And they are all brilliant. Kreg Hoover has that blues charged expressiveness that Kerry likes for certain of his songs. He sings two songs here, including a revamped version of Cold Grey Morning, a song previously seen on Kansas' Freaks of Nature album. Dan & Sam Billen put together a solid performance on "On the Air". The rest of the album is painted, with very rich coloration, by a refreshing new vocalist whom I presume is a relative, Jake Livgren. He has that Mr. Clean crispness that Kerry likes in his singers, but also with blues tinged power, scales running precision, and, when needed, a soothing sweet tone on softer numbers. He possesses an impressive vocal arsenal. Don't you hate "sounds like" comparisons? Yes, I know, but they can be useful, especially when track samples aren't offered by Amazon. So here goes - take Tommy Shaw, mix him the lead for Manfred Mann from the 70's and 80's (can't remember his name) and....meet Jake Livgren.

The compositions- this is not exactly Kansas but its close, closer than any other non-Kansas Kerry release. Lyrically more overt in Christian imagery. Musically, closer to Kansas than AD. Kerry talked about the album as a jumble, a bunch of songs just thrown together, not really an album. Well, it doesn't sound like it. The sound of the entire album meshes quite well. It is no more disparate in song selection then Somewhere to Elsewhere. Less so actually, except possibly for the two intrumental pieces, which differ in mood from the rest of the album. The most important thing to take from this review: If you like what Kerry has done with Kansas recently, you will definitely enjoy this album. I only wonder how long he can sustain this creative burst and I hope it won't abate for some time yet. This work should receive great reviews and deserves your attention It has remained in my CD player for a week.

This Album was not what i was expecting.... IN A GOOD WAY!!!! They seem to have found a way to combine some of there influences very nicely. As you can hear they have metal parts, Hardcore parts, Punk parts, Stoner rock parts. They have some very nice melodies. Hey they even got Chris Hanna from Propaghandi for a few lines on the fourth song. True....they don't know what they want to sound like...but they same applies to most of the greatest bands. I can't wait to see where their next album takes them. I just hope i get a chance to see them as they are apperently on break working on a new line up and album for Uprising Records agaIN. 4 out of 5 stars Best new Hardcore band you havent heard about........2003-11-15

first off let me say. I have been listening to punk rock now for 14 years of my life and I picked this album up by chance on my travels to Canada. and this is by far the most complete and impressive debut album i have heard in years.

Rogue Nation plays heavy hardcore in the vein of Hatbreed and Madball. I know what you think they sound like now.. but they dont at all. and the lyrical quality of this band is far superior then any of thier genre counterparts. Intelligent socio political and if you get into them you will catch the spiritual essence of the

The first track "code orange" blazes through in the traditional heavy hardcore style then stops for a brief moment while the line is uttered "and youll hear these million whispers become one million screams" then goes into one of the heaviest break downs of any of the new breed of hardcore bands. This sets the tone for the rest of the record

on track 3 "time of prophecy" the opening riff makes you want to break everything in sight. then it goes into this very tragedy like part where there is creepy voice track which on the first listen made the hairs stand up on my back.

track 4 "code red" is my favourite track because the singer of my favourite band Chris Hannah from Propagandhi sings on it. The lyrics are really good and they deal with the treatment of arabs and muslims during the post 9-11 frenzy.

track 5 "farewell" introduces Rogue Nations Melodic edge. with clean vocals. this is a prelude of what is to come on the remaining songs

the sixth track "give'r" seems to be influence by early fast hardcore very bad brains

trak 7 "porcelain" is an engergetic hardcore song that makes me wish I was 18 again so i can do those crazy kung fu dances that american hardcore kids do. very high pace makes you want to bang your head.

track 11 "dead eyes" shows rogue nation's talents from the first chord it pounds out heavy-melodic with the unforgettable lyrics "I chose ONE LOVE" not what you would expect from Heavy Mosh bands nowadays and ends up with female vocals. This song has to be one of the most innovative Hardcore songs that is out there right now.

the final track "the sedition" kicks in with the double bass and pounds right through here the singer shows more of his range from hardcore screaming to a very hip hop part. and the outro leaves you thinking that you want more

just when you think i could not get any better there is a secret track that just happens to be a cover of Bob Marley's Iron Lion Zion that has to be the best if not only reggae-hardcore cover ever. brillant. it includes guest vocalist sean muttaqi who used to sing in the infamous Vegan Reich.

if you don't know this band get to know them. If you like heavy music that never gets boring(like so many hardcore bands these days) and intelligent revolutionary lyrics that seem to be missing from today's current hardcore scene.

do what ever you can buy it. order it from amazon. steal it. this is the best debut of 2003
