    Album Description

Wolf Eyes are at the forefront of a quickly expanding American noise scene. The music this trio creates is truly terrifying. Sonic touchstones include Throbbing Gristle, early Cabaret Voltaire, Black Flag, Whitehouse, pre-Asheton Destroy All Monsters, Negative Approach, Swans, and early Sonic Youth, with whom they're playing all summer.

1 out of 5 stars Looking for Music, 'Cause this isn't. .......2007-01-04

This simply is not music...some want to define it as art, however, the BAND i'm sure states themselves as such. This is noise, plain and simple, and listening to noise is not listenting to music. A five year old bangs pots and pans together, cars squeel down the street, and that is not considered music, if sampled and put to a beat of some kind, a rhythm (or any other various MUSICAL terms), then music is made.

Making something intentionally horrible does not make it art: It's for profit (somehow...)

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Industrial from a Young Band .......2006-12-10

I am very new to Wolf Eyes, having only heard "Burned Mind," but I have to say that I am highly enthusiastic about their music. How is it that a musical group creating such powerful soundscapes of ominous noise has until now escaped me, a long-time enthusiast of all things industrial and noisy?

Wolf Eyes has taken the sound of hardcore punk, violently stripped it down to the bare essentials of throat-wrenching vocals and noisy guitar, and fused it with abrasive electronic soundscapes reminiscent of Faust and Throbbing Gristle and roaring tape noise similar to the work of Merzbow and Whitehouse. What is striking is how utterly EFFECTIVE this amalgamation of sounds is. Forget the accusations that this kind of music is "talentless" and "unmusical," Wolf Eyes are scratching and pounding their way towards a sonic apocalypse, and there are moments of exalted musical chaos here that I have not heard since I first bought Einsturzende Neubauten records. This is a powerful, scary release that is industrial in the original sense, for once, rather than the contemporary sense that tries to pass off a processed drumbeat, some gloomy synths, and dour lyrics as "industrial."

I must, however, dock this a star. As brilliantly constructed as this stuff is, there are few sounds here that can't be traced to past innovators, and sometimes things sound a little too familiar, almost imitative. Half a star off for that. The other half star off is due to the brevity of the disc - time seems to fly REALLY fast when this is playing, and when I listen to pure industrial noise, I want to get swamped in it and linger for a while. But hey, I whole-heartedly recommend this anyways - it's authentic, frightening, uncompromising, and very cool, and it's the kind of thing that could make an excellent entryway for those uninitiated with noise.

5 out of 5 stars You are slowly dying..........2006-08-19

...and this is all you can hear.

Now, to get this out of the way, this is unpleasant music. The band knows this. We as listeners know this. The point of the music is not to be consumer-friendly. You think DOA-era Throbbing Gristle was thinking about mass appeal? Fuggettaboutit.

No, this is a manifesto. This is a sonic map to your darkest fears. This might not frighten you (it should, though), but it should at least make you rethink a few things.

Music by definition is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Some people think that Frequency LSD by Masonna is just as musical as Beethoven. I'm not sure if I completely agree, but the point is music can be anything aural. So, everyone who has beef with this album being "pure noise" or "talentless" or "unlistenable" are missing the point. It's SUPPOSED to be UNLISTENABLE. Whitehouse makes noise because it's noise, not because it requires talent or anything. So does Wolf Eyes.

All the complaints in the world about this CD are all basically about the same concept: it's not music. I don't really know what to tell you all. Your definition of music is different than ours. We accept this not just as music, but more importantly as ART. This does take talent, it does take effort. Trust me (I'm a noise composer myself), this takes plenty of time. It might sound sloppy, and it might sound talentless. But some of the most revolutionary, influential bands were the same way.

Mudhoney (who I believe were among the first true grungers) sounded like absolute garbage when Superfuzz Bigmuff first came out. But it wasn't about the music. It was the MESSAGE: the combination of garage punk and the DIY attitude of the first wave of punk had not been done before to that extent. They (along with Green River and a few others) created a revolution. But their musicianship? Awful. But by that time, it didn't matter.

I realize I may be rambling a bit, but you have to understand where I'm coming from. I try to compose music like this. And I'm nowhere near as good (yes, GOOD) as these guys. It takes effort that you might not immediately see. But it's there.

So, enough bashing. Let's take this for what it really is: a statement. A piece of art. Whether you think it's music or not, it deserves to be noteworthy. That's all that really matters.

5 out of 5 stars to each their own..........2006-07-15

To simply say "oh this is just noise, no notes, no real structure" as a complaint...just shows how narrow your world is, and "this is bad noise" is more a compliment than a complaint as the members would see, i would bet. I have heard enough to know that this is a fairly easy to digest recording. And don't think this is DaDa or some form of idustrial sound, it simply is not. John has spent years destroying sound to static on American Tapes/Heavy Tapes to make Wolf Eyes an almost pop band by their own standards. This is sound and "music" atleast by track disection, and yes, their are folks that can and do enjoy the sounds made here. It is a sound and a mood, a moment, and just plain chance...and this is what I appreciate. Sound is usually 2 things...the bands that rehash the same crap with a different name, or people who actually test and try themselves to see what new thing they can find. If you don't care for what Wolf Eyes has found here, thats fine but atleast respect the fact that these guys are trying to find a unique moment. Embrace the challenge and maybe you'll come away from it a bigger person?from day light savings... and a fairview. I will continue to enjoy...just be sure to drop that additude bud, rock on.

5 out of 5 stars What is Dada?.......2006-06-23

According to its proponents, Dada was not art -- it was "anti-art". For everything that art stood for, Dada was to represent the opposite. Where art was concerned with aesthetics, Dada ignored aesthetics. If art were to have at least an implicit or latent message, Dada strove to have no meaning -- interpretation of Dada is dependent entirely on the viewer. If art is to appeal to sensibilities, Dada is to offend. It is perhaps then ironic that Dada became an influential movement in modern art. Dada became a commentary on order and the carnage they believed it reaped. Through this rejection of traditional culture and aesthetics they hoped to destroy traditional culture and aesthetics.

According to Tristan Tzara, "God and my toothbrush are Dada, and New Yorkers can be Dada too, if they are not already." A reviewer from the American Art News stated that "The Dada philosophy is the sickest, most paralyzing and most destructive thing that has ever originated from the brain of man." Art historians have described Dada as being "in reaction to what many of the artists saw as nothing more than an insane spectacle of collective homicide." Years later, Dada artists described the movement as "a phenomenon bursting forth in the midst of the post-war economic and moral crisis, a savior, a monster, which would lay waste to everything in its path. [It was] a systematic work of destruction and demoralization...In the end it became nothing but an act of sacrilege." Dada was "a revolt against a world that was capable of unspeakable horrors." Reason and logic had led people into the horrors of war; the only route to salvation was to reject logic and embrace anarchy and the irrational.

      Album Description

These songs are rotten with metal, reeds, consciousness-erasing islands of black doom, bass-heavy rippers, late night free terror jams, and pure mayhem. The new double-bass attack is showcased on "Human Animal"/"Rusted Mange" with scraping strings and a full terror-shriek workout. New directions are countered by "Rationed Rot" which revisits the eerie Throbbing Gristle-esque vocal deployment that dates from Wolf Eyes' "Dread" LP. The album also features the band's first cover, the No Fucker's anthem, "Noise Not Music", which closed out a lot of shows on Wolf Eyes' recent European tour.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Album of 2006.......2007-03-29

Wolf Eyes are one of the most important bands around. They need to be noticed by more and more people, simply so that their re-imagining of noise and music can be heard. A magazine review claimed that WE were inventing a new musical language, and I really believe this to be the case.
Certainly it will not be to everyones tastes, but that isn't the point. Like Merzbow, Jazkamer and Kevin Drumm, this album shows the possibilities that exist outside a simply musical approach to sound, and shows that anything is possible.
This album is a huge quantum leap forward from Burned Mind, and I cannot wait to hear their next emission...

      5 out of 5 stars Human Animal.......2007-01-14

This album is awesome. One of the best noise albums that I have listened to in a while. There is such a huge range of intensity and sound in this album the tracks use silence very well as well as really loud volumes. There are some heavy free form jazz and John Zorn influences on this album. The sounds created go from a wall of electronic noise to ear shattering single tones and very strong notes that drone on. This album has some really heavy arrhythmic bass with slight dub overtones, metal noise that slashes through everything, and dense atmospherics that take you on a dark and pulsating journey.

2 out of 5 stars Dark and boring.......2007-01-06

I don't get it. I really don't. I like to think of myself as being open-minded to music in all forms -- indie punk, hardcore, underground hip-hop. But minute after minute of atmospheric noise -- this is all wrong. Just wrong.

"Human Animal" is an evil, evil record, and I need to get it out of my house before something terrible happens.

Somebody out there will like it. Anybody wanna buy my copy?

      1 out of 5 stars god.......2006-11-27

this band is just a ripoff of pink floyd.

      they suck.

and deserve to rot in the garbage.

5 out of 5 stars More Old-Timey Folk Favorites From Mordor.......2006-11-10

I am of course presuming that Mordor had analog synths, liked to torture guitars, and used amplifier/mic tapping overload, but this seems like a safe guess. I don't usually go for "noise music" as such, but the fact that this is structured so well, doesn't go on forever thus overtaxing the listener's ear, and even seems to have riffs of a sort present in the chaos gives this appeal for me, while throwing the claim of the cover, "Noise Not Music" into doubt. Sorry guys, this is loud, painful and disconcerting while remaining music. Very MOVING music.

Track descriptions: The first track starts quietly enough, although there are some things clunking, popping and tapping around. An Albert Ayleresque sax enters the melee at some point, then there is this horrifying sound which defies description-this is the sound Hell makes. I think we are into the second track, "Lake Of Roaches." Other favorites include the title track, freakin' loud again, but again, there is the semblance of a riff going on here. Track five, "Rusted Mange." I think the singer is saying he "hates" something...Track six is another ambient soundscape of Hell, but this one is almost soothing, relaxing at some points. This is especially nice, showing this band's capacity for loud/soft dynamics, employing them with skill. Track seven, "The Driller," is another riff-rocker, with sampled dentistry. As a third-shifter, my best recommendation for listening is waking up in complete darkness, throw the disc on, crawl back into bed and listen as you slowly wake up.

5 out of 5 stars Juxtaposition Junction, How I Love Your Function.......2006-11-10

First off, this CD is stereo-channelled (I think? maybe not) intensity, increasing exponentially with amplification. Mood music for breaking through that last layer of existential despair and finding fleeting fulfillment amidst the harshness oft-offered by reality.

Both parties involved have been peddling their wares at the edge of structure in their respective 'genres' (for you pre-postmodern dialecticians) for a while (Braxton in 'free jazz' for 40-odd years, Wolf Eyes in 'i dont know let's call it noise' for 10-odd). Hearing the two playing together (on a live set in Canada in 2005 . . . or 2004?) could be the germ for some fantastic theories regarding the dissolving of (aforementioned) 'genre', or just the rad similarities between free thinkers, wheree'er they may hang their tasselled cap or AC/DC tour shirt . . .

This set is awesome, historical, mind-numbing (who needs a mind to listen to music?), and deep like a very deep puddle of iridescent oil mixed with mud old and new. If you enjoy either of these artists (though Anthony falls back a bit in the mix sometimes), this CD will make you grimace in enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars A Nearly Imposible Hybrid of the Industrial and Avant-Garde.......2006-09-04

Wolf Eyes - The pulsing and progression of impossibly haunting sounds, musically crafted and structured to elongate the tension of hearing the raw sounds of metal against metal; unatural sounds fed to the natural human ear.

Anthony Braxton - Sophisticated, forward-thinking genius music; the prodigious performance of all imaginable reed instruments combined with concept-filled, insanity-ridden pulses, squeals, and howls.

Neither artists are for the faint of heart, or those with short attention spans, but never would anybody have thought to see both these artists on the same album cover together. Victo presents: Wolf Eyes and Anthony Braxton - Black Vomit.

This 2006 release is completed by only two tracks - one scaling past the 25 minute mark, and the other barely reaching eight minutes. A short release, sure, but one with absolutely no extra fat or preservatives. This is an unlikely combination, though it is willing to take you on a journey that is both expressive and odd; the perfect reaction to a musical work.

I will describe the first track for you to give you an idea of the atmosphere this album sets:

The first track, "The Mangler", is a slowly-progressing piece comprised of approximately five movements - each more insane than the last. The piece begins with the clashing and clanking of different metallic, factory-like sounds, building one upon another, in unison, in tune. Braxton's sax comes in and saves the audience from sheer madness which would have been caused with over-exposure to this noise, to bring us a more melodic, more animated sound. But no dice - it quickly turns into sheer chaos again, with Braxton squealing his face off and creating melted colors sound, lacking in harmonics of any sort. The clanking grows LOUDER - and then a silence. And then some noise - some that is slightly too soft, to only be followed with an EXPLOSION of sound from every direction imaginable; Braxton is wailing with his different reed instruments, as if there is no tomorrow, as if all the world's fears have been placed into one large, expansive sphere of sound. The two unique artists appear to be playing off of each other, responding to the madness created by the previous person. And then the sound drops. We regain conciousnes, but the music has died. We've returned home, and are probably unsure of what just happened.

Want to experience this journey? Want to feel things that you won't feel from many other albums? This is the album for you, then. Put it on your CD deck, make sure to have fantastic speakers (omni-directional drivers are preferable) and dim the lights. Close your eyes and prepare to be terrified.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Original deep beauty.......2001-12-15

This was the first album of Paul Winter's that I purchased, and I still feel the sense of revelation it brought to me - as an amateur classical musician and professional music lover, I felt there must be modern idioms that convey the force and absolute beauty of life conveyed by the best of classical music. Almost throughout this album, the musical ideas are ORIGINAL from the heart and expressed and performed beautifully. The fact that this is a nature-centered album does not hurt at all, although I would say the expression ties most closely to the nature of humanity than to any one animal. In the sense that the deep appreciation of animals shown in this album corresponds to the same appreciation of one's own human nature, you could say there is no distinction between the two, and when carried into this tender yet strongly expressive world, it is not even necessary to think about such a distinction. Lastly, there is at times in the album a sense similar to listening to good JS Bach - the composer's intellectual enjoyment of experimenting with new sounds and ideas, while at the same time producing great music.

            4 out of 5 stars A lovely album.......2000-12-08

These are selections culled from Pauls other Living Music albums. If you love new-age type of music, this is for you. Not only does this album feature the voices of the Bottlenose Dolphin, the Canyon Wren, Loon and the majestic Wolf, but also some very unusual instruments like the Amazon rain-stick, bendir (a North African frame drum) and Pandereta. The 1st 5 selections were recorded in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, giving them an almost spiritual feel, with Pauls soprano sax adding beauty. Other pieces were recorded live in the General Assembly of the United Nations on World Environment Day in 1984. One song, is the wonderful traditional Guinean song 'Minuit', with English and Guinean lyrics. 'Song For the World' was recorded in Russia and features the Dimitri Pokrovsky Singers and traditional Kursk panpipes. This album is truly a listening experience. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This music is a spiritual connection to our animal friends........1998-11-20

Paul WInter has put together amazing music and sounds that awakens our heart connection with our wild brothers and sisters. This is music to center with and meditate by. Whenever I am feeling disrupted, this is the music I turn to. It's jazz, it's New Age, it's spiritual. It really defies description and categorization. It's soothing and lovely, it's exciting and energizing. It's a trip to the healing waters without leaving your chair.

Listen. Hear. Open your heart to the wolves, the teachers.
