There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03
The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.
Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26
Well here we are with a great piece of history.
This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.
Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06
I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.
Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.
This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.
The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.
If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15
Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Amazing Songs, Awesome Album -Buy this and you'll love it! .......2006-08-23
In 1986 people's view of Australian music changed forever. The Triffids led this change by showing the rest of the world that Aussie songwriting and musicianship was something to be reckoned with.
Born Sandy Devotional (BSD) is an essential piece of any music fan's collection. Whether you like rock, country, folk, pop, rap or classical, you will appreciate the songs written by David McComb and performed by The Triffids. The band's fans, know as "TriffHeads", are rabidly devoted to spreading the word about the Triffids and trying to help them reach new fans, especially in America, a country they were not able to break. BSD is considered by most TriffHeads to be their defining album.
It is hard to classify The Triffids. I would say somewhere between Johnny Cash and the Rolling Stones - yet, on their own plain as well. For instance the first song doesn't have a jingley-jangley guitar intro or a swelling build up to the first line. Boom, instant. The Seabirds hits like a big fat thick drop of honey upon your eardrum. As the album rolls on, the honey spreads and sinks in to your brain and then down your spine through your bones and blood. And there it stays. In fact, honey is a good metaphor for this music. Honey is sweet, nutritious, universally loved and can even heal wounds when applied to the skin. We know it is produced by bees but not sure how it is made or how the bees all work together in order to get their sweet product.
The musicianship is phenomenal. This is a band that listens to each other when they play. The many layers stretch and pull and touch and mingle in a way that keeps the music fresh through endless listenings. The band is known not just for their musical abilities but the way they interpret and produce David's songs. These songs are wired into the band member's brains and played from the heart. David McComb sings, plays guitar and keyboards, 'Evil' Graham Lee plays pedal, lap steel and shoulder guitars, Martyn Casey is on bass, Jill Birt sings and plays keyboards, David's brother Robert McComb plays violin and guitar and Alsy MacDonald plays drums.
Another reason to own BSD is that David McComb is arguable one of the greatest songwriters of all time. And I am including Mozart on this list. David was born to write and write he did prolifically for his short 36 years here on Earth. Like any highly regarded artist, his songs come from inside out. His lyrics are quotable and sticky. If you listen enough to The Triffids, you will have an insightful and philosophical comment for every occasion - just don't say it in front of another TriffHead because they will know you are just repeating one of David's lyrics:
"I know your shape
Our limbs entwined
I know your name, remember mine"
from Estuary Bed
I give this album the highest rating and it is my favorite of all time.
(The 2006 re-mastered version includes 9 bonus tracks and a booklet of David's hand written lyrics)

Sandy Posey .......2006-04-19
Big Sandy Posey fan in the 60's and tickled as all get out to have my long lost albums back again.
Born to be a singer.......2005-08-03
Loved most of the songs here, "I Take It Back", "Born A Woman",
and epecially "Love of the Common People". Too bad she couldn't of had better song writers, for she would have been one
of the greatest. Still give her a 4 star.
The most comprehensive Sandy Posey compilation available.......2004-07-17
"Born To Be Hurt" is by far the most comprehensive compilation of Sandy Posey's recordings available today. Until she is given the boxset treatment, fans will not be fully satisfied, though the good news is that the overlap with other existing compilations isn't as extensive as might be feared or expected.
So apart from the five ubiquitous hits that must inevitably grace every compilation, we also get some excellent tracks from her four pop albums circa 1966-67 that haven't previously been available on CD (eg, "See You Round On The Rebound", "Bread & Butter", "Love Of The Common People", etc). Of course, every fan will have his own favourites that didn't make it on the compilation - on my part, I'd have loved "I Can Show You How To Live", "The Boy I Love", "Take Me With You Baby", "Shattered" and "Arms Full Of Sin" amongst others to have been included but then the limitations of any compilation - however comprehensive - must mean that some worthy stuff is going to get left out.
What makes this 2CD anthology special is the inclusion for the first time of Sandy's post-MGM country hits and other singles sides recorded throughout the 70s and early 80s with other record companies. Of these, her earliest post-MGM material namely "Bring Him Safely Home To Me" and "Why Don't We Go Somewhere And Love" are the most outstanding. Even "Happy Happy Birthday Baby" and "Don't", the latter an Elvis Presley cover, are excellent but the quality goes progressively downhill thereafter due to the painfully pedestrian production values that enveloped her later recordings. Not by any reckoning Sandy's fault - her voice, always heavily double tracked, was still as enchanting as ever - but sadly a sign of the times. By the late 70s and early 80s, record companies were putting out anonymous music and it showed on the last few tracks here. If anything, this anthology serves to remind us how great the 60s were. The lyrics of Sandy's early pop hits may still make some people wince but there's no denying that the music is timeless and something special. Much of it still sounds as fresh today as it did more than 30 years ago and if that's not classic pop music, what is ?
Quite apart from the superior remastering, the anthology also pays careful attention to the chronology of Sandy's recordings - I hate it when the tracks are jumbled up for no good reason - and comes with a set of very professionally written sleeve notes that respect the artist by their attention to detail and accuracy. "Born To Be Hurt" is overall a great product.
Almost complete!.......2004-06-23
This is about the fourth set of Sandy Posey hits that I know of. It appears that Raven Records are masters of the compilation and this is a very good set, giving an excellent representation of her output.
The big three hits of the 60's - "Single Girl", "Born A Woman" and "I take It Back" are here, along with other favourites like "Sunglasses" and "Hey Mister". There are also some others I hadn't heard before, like "Happy Happy Birthday Baby" and "Why Don't We Go Somewhere And Love?".
It's a great collection and shows just what an underrated country singer she is. The later songs shows that he voice got better as she got a little older, maturing into a confident sounding singer, but who retained that innocent lilt.
There are no doubt a lot of tracks which country afficianados know, that are not here. I am not an afficianado, but I was curious by the omission of songs like "Satin Pillows".
However, so far, this is the most complete compilation of an artist who deserves to have the highest compliment paid to her with a box-set. Until it comes out, I'll wait for the next compilation, which will no doubt have other songs I have never heard before.
If you like country artists, this is for you - it's an absolute treat.
The Definitive Collection.......2004-06-23
This is it kids!! Sandy Posey's most comprehensive and definitive collection to date. Highly recommended not only for the vast selection of songs but for the remastered sound quality. Most of the songs are her sweet and haunting ballads from the 60's with a few selections from the 70's and early 80's."Standing in the Rain","Bread and Butter","Hey Mister",and "Ways of the World" are sheer perfection for any true Sandy Posey fan. There are so many gems on this compilation, it cannot be missed.

BROADSIDE..........2006-06-11
When the Triffids put out the Richter-cracking "Born Sandy Devotional" there was no further comment, for them or anyone else. It was soon to be the golden year 1986; satellite TV and cell phones were coming to the fore, and the world was glued to the television, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Whitney Houston.
Lots to be distracted about...
No one cared, and even now, most are still asleep. But the real earthquake may soon finally come; I hear "Born Sandy Devotional" is now being reissued.
Greil Marcus remarked a similar thought about the much-flashier Sex Pistols when he said something to the effect that "Never Mind the Bollocks" cracked rock and roll in half.
The Triffids were the "anti-Sex Pistols" in every single way imaginable. They didn't crack rock and roll in half (among many other things they didn't do). Most of the time, no one even noticed the considerable oxygen they'd used up in whichever club they'd just played in.
For better or worse, "Born Sandy Devotional" marked the informal end of what had once been known as New Wave music. The Triffids popularized the scary end of normal human emotions as...normal. Homemade music had suddenly stopped being apologetic for being homemade.
The leadoff song "The Seabirds" is the most un-rock "Track One" song I know of, on any song album ever recorded. Actually it's the most unlikely leadoff track, period. Any other band couldn't pull it off. But with the Triffids, it was all in a day's work. What with weird pedal steel, a forlorn melody, and the death-infused vocals, this song is an introduction to a crazy quilt of an album of misshapen things that simply couldn't ever be rock.
Not rock, perhaps, but instead, something that was unapologetically emotional and tearful, in a way that was unknown outside of American country music. But the Triffids weren't country, and they could never become country. They were too worldly for that, and were too intelligent as a band to ever be anything other than hopeless misfits.
Their confident songs were evidence that, in some muted way, the Triffids were aware of that fact. One can tell by the way they played the songs on this album. No one could ever mistake the soul-rending epic "Wide Open Road" for anything other than the Triffids, in spite of thousands of imitators who are largely afraid to mention the Triffids by name.
Nothing could ever take the place of this album. There is no equivalent to "Born Sandy Devotional" anywhere. Punk rock cannot address the issues that "Born Sandy Devotional" raises, and neither can anything else.
Every song on "Born Sandy Devotional" has a friendly face combined with a scary underside. Crime, lost love, death by misadventure, and personal decline are all handled like silly merry-go-round tunes for children.
Whee!
By the time the listener reaches the bizarre-but-brilliant "Tender Is The Night" at the end of all this, they will wonder if it was a great music album, or a nightmare. But its cathartic effect simply cannot be denied. David McComb's vocals are simply too insistent, and the band is too erudite, for it to pass as anything other than a one-in-a-million collection of songs.
Listening to BSD is hard work and occasionally even unpleasant, but it is very much worth it, in the end. You haven't lived, until you live through an unbroken listen to this musical landmark.
This album is simply not to be missed.
Songs of Longing.......2004-04-16
Australian artists must generally leave for Britain or America to really succeed in the music business. Though this album was recorded in London, The Triffids seem to yearn intensely and defiantly for their distant homeland.
Their third record, Born Sandy Devotional, is a moving and beautiful release that combines at times languid, at times anthemic guitar rock with shades of mournful sea chanties and country ballads. The songs tell stories that remind me of Jack London's: desperation pushes the exhausted, frustrated, and betrayed to tenaciously endure and at times even indulge feelings of hope. Except for Life of Crime, the only track on the album that lacks passion and originality, and Chicken Killer, which is a tad too frivolous, every song feels like an open wound just before the healing sets in.
Though Jill Birt's voice is thin and of limited range, it is, thank goodness, used sparingly. The bulk of the singing is handled by songwriter David McComb, whose style blends the best qualities of Jim Morrison and Nick Cave.
If you've ever lost a part of yourself through losing a person or place that you love, this record will speak to you.
A Devotional Album.......2001-06-05
This is an extraordinary album. The sound has a wonderful lushness and sense of space, although most of the songs deal with loss, regret and isolation. The late David McComb's lyrics are extremely evocative and unusual - "No foreign pair of dark sunglasses could ever shield you from/The light that pierces your eyelids, the screaming of the gulls" are the lines which open the album. It's a very emotional album, made all the more so by the haunted note in David McComb's voice.
It's difficult to pick highlights when the album hangs together so well, but "The Seabirds", "Estuary Bed", "Wide Open Road", "Stolen Property" and "Tender Is The Night" all bring a tear to the eye. Somehow, the overall effect of all these rather gloomy songs is really quite uplifting, possibly due to the fine, rather swoonsome arrangements and soaring melodies. I bought this album when it came out in 1986, and it's one that has stayed with me. This will appeal to fans of skewed pop like The Go-Betweens, The Smiths, REM or even Nick Cave in his slightly less lurid moments.
Loses one star because "Chicken Killer" and "Life Of Crime" are a bit sub-standard.
