Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

OH HELL YA.......2007-02-16
DONT KNOW A WHOLE LOT ABOUT IT BUT MY FRIEND LOVED IT
Elysian Fields: they are their name. .......2005-11-04
Syrup is delicious, but only in small doses--though beautiful and mystical, Queen of the Meadow may be hard to listen out repeatedly. Nonetheless, I love how Jennifer Charles's voice can move from a scratchy murmer to a clear, livened soprano within a single note. Most of the songs flow like a sea of thick chocolate, while others take on an ubeat, jazzy feel comparable to 70's slowrock. At times it even carries a folkish feel, as in "Rope of the Weeds."
By far, the strength of Elysian Fields is in the vocals. Jennifer's voice is hypnotic and carries the feeling that the name "Elysian Fields" suggests: a dreamy isolation of slumber and hedonism. One downfall of the album is that the simplistic guitar strums and even more simplistic percussion at times isn't enough. Many songs could use additional layers.
Peaks of the album are "Black Acres," where the original lyrics float with a haunting cello and organ accompaniment; the swingy "Bend Your Mind," which received much radio play in Europe but probably never the US; and "Dream Within a Dream," which holds a Wizard of Oz-like dream versus reality magic. Oren Bloedow takes the vocals in "Queen of the Meadow," which is a nice male diversion but perhaps comes too late.
"Night cracked like a skull...".......2004-02-07
This is the coolest band! Love the lyrics. Like dark, sexy jazz, almost. Jennifer Charles has the sexiest voice EVER. Yes, there are a few songs I tend to skip, but the rest make up for it. "Black Acres" and "Barely Recognize You" are the best, along with "Cities Will Fall", an apocalyptic love song. Gorgeous! The lyrics are dark, even graphic; images of convulsing moons, collapsing cities, and consuming burial grounds will leave "a trail like Dillinger" in your head. I can't wait to hear Bleed Your Cedar.
All Music Guide Review (****1/2).......2003-11-08
"The always-alluring Jennifer Charles is the focal point of Elysian Fields, and her aching purr goes a long way in making the band as enticing as it is. But it is not so clear-cut as to who is the architect of their sound, because beneath that fantastic voice on a song such as "Bayonne," Oren Bloedow's arrangement, as minimalistic as the song seems to be, turns out to be the Venus flytrap of the tune. With just some stoned, lackadaisical drumming and droopy-eyed Rhodes piano falling like raindrops, the song subtly makes some rather radical shifts and chord progressions. The listener doesn't even realize they've been caught in the musical web until Charles comes along to devour them, but it is the music that actually does the snagging. So it goes for the entirety of the duo's second album (and first on Jetset following a split with former label Radioactive, who refused to release a previous album they had recorded with producer Steve Albini), Queen of the Meadow, a deliciously mesmerizing and irresistible opus that is a perfect confluence of sly and furtive (but very much narrative) musical backdrops and lusty insinuation.
Part of the duo's secret is that they change things up both stylistically and temperamentally while maintaining that certain smoke-filled tension via Charles' singing. Instead of giving you a long, slow cigarette drag for 11 straight songs, they mix up tempo and mood: slinkily rocking on "Bend Your Mind" or gently swinging as on the titillating "Tides of the Moon," then turning it way down on the nearly comatose old-world lament, "Barely Recognize," then bouncing back yet again with the stunning "Fright Night," which adds a little anguish to a little spice until the song pulls itself up out of its torpor and turns into playfully cutting jazz. Bloedow's boyhood heroes were Brian Wilson and Kurt Weill, and as odd as that pair seems on paper, they are both very much present in the arrangements; they turn out to be an exquisite match, especially on "Dream Within a Dream." Dribbling Wilson-esque piano chords over queasy orchestration, the song is theatrical and playful, but also self-consciously pensive. The best songs, though, strip the music down to just the barest essentials, as on "Black Acres." Cloaked in stark, noir hues, the song is part woeful Italian ballad and part torch song, with Charles' voice playing innocent while her words play the game of temptation. Queen of the Meadow is not necessarily visionary -- Tom Waits and Mazzy Star, to name two artists that have been referenced in regard to Elysian Fields, have explored similar territory -- but it is a scintillating, self-contained work nonetheless, both poetic and wonderfully profane, artistic but not necessarily arty, and full of fabulous songs."
I love this CD!.......2003-03-14
I haven't fallen in love with a band like this since I discovered Mogwai! The moment I heard Queen of the Meadow I went out and bought it -- and then I bought La Mer Enfortunata, which isn't an EF album but was made by the band's two main contributors, Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow -- and then I went out and tracked down Bleed Your Cedar. Wow! I rarely even write reviews, I'm just writing this because I love it so much. Really!
This music is very svelte -- kind of jazz meets alternative meets symbolist poetry meets pre-Raphaelite painting. Baudelaire would have loved this. Jennifer Charles has the sexiest, smoothest, velvetiest voice I ever heard. The music is intelligent, eclectic, at times bordering on genius. There's nothing like it.
Some people seem to prefer Bleed Your Cedar, but I think Queen of the Meadow is the better album. Cedar still shows derivative traces of pop and rock, IMHO. Queen is more understated musically, but I think it's a more complete or evolved statement of the band's aesthetic. There are one or two clunkers on the album -- like Fright Night -- but those are easy to forget alongside Black Acres (definitely the best track on the album), Dream Within a Dream (the Poe poem set to luscious jazz lounge music), and Cities Will Fall.
The best way I can describe my feelings about this album is like this: most music I listen to while doing other things -- working, eating, driving, etc. This album I love so much that I don't profane it by giving it half my attention. I only listen to it at night, alone, when I can give my whole attention to it. It's that good -- that pleasureful -- that great.

A Hard to Find Gem!.......2003-02-11
I was again fortuned enough to find this first cd of Elysian Fields. There are only about 4 tracks one of which Star can be heard on Bleed Your Cedar. Diamonds was my favorite song and can only be heard on this cd. If you can find it then consider yourself very lucky!
Star rocks!.......2000-07-13
Just picked up the CD by accident. First track--the ultimate soundtrack to a seductive striptease. A really creative effort.
Excellent!.......1999-02-08
I went to Media Play this weekend, and not finding Elysian Fields' LP, "Bleed Your Cedar" there, I bought this CD (the only one they had). I first heard of Elysian Fields when their music was featured on "Charmed." I bought this EP not knowing what to expect, but figured it had to be good after reading the reviews of "Bleed Your Cedar." So, I bought it, and I was stunned. The music on this disc is beautiful, calming, and lyrical. Not many acts can be compared to Elysian Fields. All four of these songs are excellent and this disc is definitely worth each one of the five bucks you'd spend for it. I'm definitely ordering "Bleed Your Cedar" from Amazon ASAP!

Sophisticated, sensual darkness.......2007-04-09
As previous reviews show, this music isn't for everybody. But for those who appreciate its sinuous & slow erotic charge, it'll take you to mysterious places. Unlike the boringly blatant & plastic sexuality of a lot of contemporary hits, this is the real thing: the lush flow is in the mind as much as in the body, creating a fever dream that never ends while the music is playing & Jennifer Charles' rich, low, satiny voice is soothing, caressing, aching in the dark, calling to you ... "But it doesn't matter anyway, I'm on the wrong side of the water, oh won't you listen to the lady in the lake?" In a way, it isn't so much about sex as it is about the mood, the countless little details merging together, the emotional undercurrents ... both alluring & a little ominous ... there's really nothing else quite like it. Most highly recommended!
eh.......2007-04-08
I didn't like this album, and barely listened to it. I don't know why...and wasn't particularly interested to figure out the reason or reasons.
Darkly erotic...........2001-10-16
Well, all negativity from the others aside, I hated this album at first too. Too slow, too mellow, too offkey.... but then, oh, then.... I listened to it as I was falling asleep! In the dark, with your eyes closed, new realms are opened up to you! There's an amazing art behind the simplicity and the smoky vocals. This is NOT music to groove to or dance to or to jump around too.... it's romantic, curling up in a warm bed JAZZY music. It creates at atmosphere without being blunt about it, which is why many people miss the point I think - not being smacked in the face with the purpose... Despite being so calming and tranquil, it won't put you to sleep if you don't want it to. It's interesting enough musically to keep me entranced. Darkly erotic vibes throughout, and very thoughtful! ENJOY IT!
Aptly titled.......2001-08-17
Granted I have cd's I've never heard arriving in my mailbox daily. Some I get, others pass me by. This is one where I misfired, for sure.
This is one dark as coal cd. Is it me or does this sound like mood music for dungeons? The singing is not at all mellifluous in any way whatsoever; it is rather a droning monotone (think the female equivalent if Howard Cosell took up music), the piano chops and overall atmosphere of the record is moodier than I can stand. I like moody when it's good (David Sylvian's "Secrets of the Beehive").
I'll give them credit for one thing, they've managed a classy name for themselves. Weren't the Elysian Fields where ancient Romans thought you went when you died? Unfortunately, their name is the only thing of value I can divine.
Elysian Fields Forever.......2001-06-13
Whoa, can I have a J please? As in Jealousy! That's what it sounds like D cluck cluck cluck has a severe case of. Take some xanax and call me in the morning. Sounds like you're trying to promote your own band and your trying to do it at the expense of Elysian Fields. Hoping to attract the EF audience? Anyway, this forum isn't for jealous rants and slagging, it's for thought-out reviews by hopefully someone who has something constructive and intelligent to say. Anyway, I first had their latest cd "queen of the meadow", and loved it to death. Great songs, mood, depth. The lyrics are incredibly poetic. The work of Lautremont comes to mind. Quality of the voice, music, words evoking surrealism- Blake, Ernst.. So I searched for anything else they put out and have been devouring it all. "Bleed your Cedar" is a beautiful cd. It seems a little bit more innocent than their latest one, but it is every bit as good. Especially love the song 'fountains on fire' where the piano is like a storm building, and Jennifer's voice soars, especially on these high notes. There is a great slide guitar solo on one of the songs too. This band is very deep, so don't let that persons sour grapes spoil it for you. If you like beautiful melodies, stellar musiacianship, poetic lyrics, ala Nick Cave, then, you'll probably like this stuff. It's not kiddie stuff!

A compelling throwback to an era when "style" and "substance" were not mutually exclusive in Hollywood fare, director George Hickenlooper's intimate-scaled portrait of a failed novelist surviving by making a deal with the devil--becoming an escort for wealthy women--features rich performances from its cast (Andy Garcia, Mick Jagger, Julianna Margulies, James Coburn) and a gently sophisticated score from Anthony Marinelli. The composer's work here revolves around warm pastoral orchestrations punctuated with spare piano and acoustic guitar flourishes and passages of spare, horn-driven jazz stylings that suggest maturity bordering on world-weariness. Even when Marinelli's adventurous tack inspires him to throw some sax and even sitar into the mix, his masterful sense of nuance and color insures it's a seamless, compelling fusion that helps make this score an intimate, understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

The ultimate in wistful easy-listening film scores.......2005-08-20
Even if you haven't seen this classy & underrated movie and are just looking for something to drift and dream by or ponder and reflect if you will, just put this cd on shuffle & repeat and you will have a wonderful time.
An Intimate, Understated gem this is!.......2004-04-17
I quite agree with the reviewer for Amazon. This is a beautiful lush composition, and deserves a lot more attention. The orchestrations are full and symphonic on some tracks, with a change to world music. The heavily indian music inspired tracks blend seamlessly with the classical motifs of the occident.
The jazz sax completes the triage blend of sounds, which never seem out of place. I must admit that I am quite new to Anthony Marinelli's work. However, the music in the movie captivated me more than the movie itself (a good effort). It made me seek out tis gem and his other works. This album is a definate must for soundtrack enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy a worldly mix to the music.
I feel that some of the score is missing from this album, as heard in the film. Also its a little short. However it is rather good on its own. The vocals harmonies are excellent.
It is not Gabriel's "Passion" or Portman's litling music, or Horner-esque or a jazz inspired in its entirety, but an interesting mosaic.
My favourite tracks are "End Titles" "Main Title" "Inner Sanctum" "Byrons First Date" and the finest "I Gotta go".

Great album.......2007-07-05
Not going to say to much but I will say this album was a great purchase and I enjoy it TONS. I enjoy the title track and,"snowblind" the most on the album though. But just for a little info I'd advise checking out the uk amazon first as it may be cheaper there ( I got my copy for nearly half these prices). Just rember to multiply the price they have listed by 2 to see what it will be in US dollars though.....
Simply Beautiful.......2005-02-18
The blending of the jazzy beats and the bass is just ingenious. The trance isn't hard core per say, it's subtle and sweet. The bass is simply perfect. I love this CD.
Awesome!.......2001-09-20
I first heard the song "Elysian Fields" on Glücklich IV. Sometimes you like a song so much you go out and buy the CD and then it turns out that all of the other songs suck because the one song that was picked out for a "Compilation" was exceptional. That's not the case with this CD. Although "Elysian Fields" is the only song with Bogey talking, all of the songs share the same cool, ambient, jazzy, brasilian, "get-a-funky-riff-going and then shimmer a lot of Rhodes electronics and electric drumbeats all around it" type of tunes. If you like Om Lounge, Thievery Corporation, Glücklich I-IV, The New Latinaires, Bossa Mundo, Buscemi, Trüby Trio, etc. etc., you'll LOVE this.

Haven't heard his first one yet, but I love this one. Lounge, electro, sampled, eurofunky, sometimes mellow and ethereal..one of my favorites in a long time. Apparently the first album was drum & bass, which I don't care for even though I listen to it anyway for the mellow tracks. So if he's changing his style, he'll lose some fans and gain others. Compost has yet to disappoint. This goes with K&D, ESL, Costes, etc.
Elysian Fields - Minus 8.......2001-03-15
I really can't agree with the review made by the another costumer. This new album was not a disappointment and i think it is very well made and the music is well balanced, featuring jazzy and drum and bass songs, similar to Thievery Corporation and Cinematic Orchestra. I really advise you to by this album and if you like it check other albums from other artists of COMPOST LABEL like for example Rainer Truby Trio and Jazzanova.

sublime, so ignore the slime.......2005-06-04
some people are so sick. i can't believe people are weighing in on her looks. this is about music people! charles and bloedow are amazing composers. the music is divine and pure and it is moody and it even rocks at times. the lyrics are moving, and these people who are saying this is parody are parodies themselves. they are clueless, as they can only see jennifer as a sex object. it's a pity because they are missing the boat. can't women be powerful and sexy and smart without threatening the pathetic creepy boys of this world? beautiful vocals too, lest we forget she's an AMAZING singer! And frankly, I find that the poduction values have improved over the years, less gloss, and more real muscle.
Field of Erotic Dreams!.......2005-05-23
My friend below me is correct in his assessment that Jennifer Charles is slowly becoming a caricature, but that does not keep this album from being very enjoyable. With the loss of a major label, it does seem as if Ms. Charles' looks have began to suffer along with the decreased production values and increased hard-living...until you get a look at the picture in the sleeve of "Dreams that Breathe Your Name" of Ms. Charles in a bra, wearing a very seductive look on her face! That, my friends, is the point of an Elysian Fields Album. Close your eyes, let your imagination wander and embrace the ethereal, sublime sounds of experimental jazz, while imagining love making with the girl you wish you could have, but who is painfully out of your reach.
She Becomes A Parody ... of Herself.......2005-04-29
As an ardent fan of the first two albums, and I haven't bought this one yet, only listened to samples, but I laughed at some of these samples (I know I know, they're a smittence of the full track, but you get an idea, eh?).
Why? Because Jennifer Charles is starting to sound like a cartoon parody of herself. Or in other words, oh so predictable ....
But maybe I'm just jaded. For sure I am. Still, I think that the price is right here and I'm already behind the eight-ball on this one, so I'm buying it.
Ear candy...if that candy is chewable morphine.......2004-09-16
Remember listening to Mazzy Star and imagining the person of your dreams slowly spinning in the an empty ballroom with only the shine of mirrorball outlining their movements? No. Huh, well then listen to Elysian Fields and you'll get an idea of what I mean.
"Dreams That Breathe Your Name" is an album that blends blurry eyed lyrics with plodding shoegazer-jazz. Think PJ Harvey at her most quiet and intense, the dreaminess of Portishead, and the elegance of Mazzy Star. So, enough with the allusions.
Jennifer Charles has a velvet tongue that doesn't mind licking every inch of you. 'Sultry' is inadequate descriptor. Oren Bloedow is able to orchestrate a sound that feels like a blue cloud of cigarette smoke that reeks of sex, achieved and denied.
The gems here are 'Timing is Everything,' 'Live for the Touch,' and 'Shrinking Heads in the Sunset.' But you really don't lose here.

Customer Reviews:
A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05
This is a compilation disk of Greatest Hits, as it were, of Henry Purcell recorded by various artists from 1953 (the Alfred Deller track) through the 1970s through 1994. The point of the disk was part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the much to early death of this great composer and one of the great geniuses of music that England or Britain has ever produced. I have always been a devotee of his music and absolutely adore the way he set English. It is absolutely unique to him and so full of wonderful effects that create a greater whole than the music or words alone.
1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.
There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.
That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).

Groovy Man !.......2000-01-24
Elysian Field kicks just as hard today as it did in the 1960's. The ledgendary band takes you thru the whole history of their band and shows how they evolved from Soul Inc. Don't worry this is worth the money.....
Elysian Field rides again!.......2000-01-17
Another killer release from the boys from Louisville, KY... a lot harder-edged and even punk-like rock and roll from the early 70's... ahead of their time... If you like Soul, Inc., you'll LOVE Elysian Field... it's Maxwell, Settle and Bugbee at their best!
