Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The voice of Survivor.......2007-01-20

Originally released in 1999, Empires was a solo effort by former Survivor frontman Jimi Jamison. The music you hear on Empires is of course quite similar to Survivor's particular brand of AOR. In fact, the album was originally released under the name "Jimi Jamison's Survivor."

Empires is a very solid, very old-school AOR album, full of ballads and love anthems. It's an album very much in the classic Survivor mold. Believe it or not, one of the album highlights is the song I'm Always Here, which was the theme song to the TV show Baywatch. Jamison carries the album with his warm and powerful voice. The songs are for the most part quite well written, though they do tend to get a bit cheesy at times. I guess that's just one of the pitfalls of this kind of music. Still, this is an enjoyable album that should please most old-school AOR fans, especially Survivor fans.

The 2004 reissue of Empires features a pair of bonus tracks. The first is a Christmas-themed ballad called Keep It Evergreen. The second is a live version of Survivor's Too Hot to Sleep. Whether or not they make it worth replacing your original version of Empires depends on just how much of a Jimi Jamison fan you are.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent melodic rock album from the voice of Magnum.......2006-08-29

Released in 2003, When Empires Burn is the first Bob Catley solo album not to be written and produced by Ten mainman Gary Hughes. Instead, Ten's keyboardist Paul Hodson is on board as songwriter and producer.

Fortunately, the album is every bit as good as Catley's previous work. While I tend to prefer Hughes's material, Hodson proves to be a first-rate songwriter in his own right.
The material on When Empires Burn has an epic romantic flair that reminds me quite a bit of Catley's debut album the Tower. Even the basic love songs have a certain aura of power and grandeur that only a unique singer like Bob Catley could provide. When Empires Burn is probably a bit heavier than the average Magnum album, but it also has its softer moments.

Overall, When Empires Burn is an excellent melodic rock album, and is sure to please fans of Magnum, Ten, and melodic rock fans in general. Catley has proven time and again that his albums are always worth checking out.

NOTE: There are a couple of different versions of this album (digipack, Japanese import, etc.) They all have the same track listing and bonus tracks (Heaven Can Wait and When the Earth Lies Still), so my recommendation is to find the one with the lowest price and grab it!
