There are but two kinds of people in the world: Those captivated by Baz Luhrmann's heady, postmodernist musical romp Moulin Rouge--and everybody else. Oddly, the film's initial soundtrack release may have been the project's most traditional element, marketing a slate of pop-star contributions that gave listeners a sometimes-skewed perspective on its true musical charms. This follow-up corrects much of that oversight, offering original film versions of "Sparkling Diamonds" (the lavish, Nicole Kidman-performed medley of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Material Girl"), Jim Broadbent's and Richard Roxburgh's loopy take on "Like a Virgin," as well as the lively Offenbach "Can Can" parody "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)." It also pays homage to the efforts of composer Craig Armstrong, whose quietly compelling underscore often binds the film's other far-flung musical influences together, be they stately orchestral readings of Elton John's "Your Song," a dramatic arrangement for Kidman and Ewan MacGregor's original film duet of "Come What May," or his dark, melodramatic take on Queen's "The Show Must Go On." The first Moulin Rouge soundtrack collection flaunted the film's bold, cross-genre ambitions; this one chronicles its nakedly emotional heart and soul. --Jerry McCulley

Volume Two Includes the Memorable Renditions of 'like a Virgin' and 'your Song' and 'the Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular).' It also features a Mix of the Nicole Kidman Song 'one Day I'll Fly Away.'
Customer Reviews:
Wow........2007-01-15
I must say...I was very glad when they released Part Two of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Don't get me wrong...the first part was great and all, but it was nothing spectacular. I was specifically looking for certain songs from the movie, and I was completely disappointed when they were on there. The release of a second soundtrack was, in my opinion, an absolute necessecity.
The highlights of the album are:
-Your Song (Instrumental)
-Sparkling Diamonds (original film version)
-Come What May (original film version)
-The Show Must Go On (original film version)
In my opinion, "The Show Must Go On" is the best song on this album...it was just so perfect for the ending of the movie, and I fell in love with the song. I was so disappointed that it wasn't on the first soundtrack. This song is part of what makes the second soundtrack so amazing...the song is fierce!!
If you love the movie and are a fan of the first soundtrack, then definitely, get this one. Many of the songs are versions taken straight from the movie - I recommend this with 4.5 stars...you will NOT be disappointed!
Love this CD.......2006-07-04
I love everything about this movie. The music is amazing and the instrumental songs on this CD are perfect. The first CD seemed to be more for a bunch of teenyboppers that wanted to hear the worst song on the whole CD (Lady Marmalade). If only they could combine the good songs from the first CD into this one.
I gave this 5 stars even though it's about a 4.5 because they split the soundtrack over two seperate cds.
Could it get any better?.......2006-03-02
So i thought that the first instalment in these soundtracks was great (and it was) but the purchase of this sequel is a must if you want the full effect. With the original film versions of these songs, sung by the stars of the movie, you get the real feel that was the magnifisence of Moulin Rouge! Ewan McGregor is still by far the star, with his talent spilling over the dramatic lovesong 'Come What May' and 'Your Song', but Nicole's brilliant performance as Satine definatly takes front and center in 'One Day I'll Fly Away' and the film version of 'Sparkling Diamonds'...I have noticed that many complain about how the first soundtrack did not include the film version of this song...well you need this CD then...you will not be dissapointed. Other highlights include 'Like a Virgin' which is downright histarical, and the dark cover of 'the show must go on' which highlights the tragidy behind this tightly woven tale. THis is one must have soundtrack for your ever growing collection. A perfect companion to soundtrack number 1!
Moulin rouge tried to fill up the GAP.......2006-02-12
This contains many great tracks missing from the original soundtrack, including Like A Virgin, Spectacular Spectacular and The Show Must Go On. I thought the inclusion of two instrumental versions of Your Song might be a bit redundant, but upon listening to them I really enjoyed them and they are quite different from one another. OK, it's not the best soundtrack that could have been put out. But it's pretty darn close. One thing that many DEDICATED fans of the movie (including myself) said is that the original movie soundtrack lacked the actual original movie score. There are 10+ songs in "Moulin Rouge" and many didn't make the final cut.
Baz did the smart thing, taking the audiences favorite music, a few gems from the first soundtrack such as "Come What May" and "Sparkling Diamonds" as well as a few new songs, like "Like a Virgin", "The Show Must Go On" and "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)" and releasing the Original Film versions, allowing for the amazing vocal performances of the actors, including the fabulous Jim Broadbent, to be shine through. Also, released is background music "Meet Me in the Red Room", played during Christian's arrival in the elephant, marking the only non-actor/orchestral piece within the context of the CD.
One thing that this soundtrack included that I didn't expect was several orchestral pieces that were mostly used as background music throughout the film. "Your Song - Instrumental" (#1) has personally become a favorite and is constantly being repeated in the CD player. Also included is the ending credits music "Bolero" and the final piece ... known as "Ascension/Nature Boy". Also included is a remix of "One Day I'll Fly Away", and like all MR remixes, is a little tough to listen to at first but after repeat listening, it becomes music to your ears.
To all you MR diehards out there: this is a must. Not like I could stop you anyways. To others who haven't been introduced to the spectacular (spectacular) world of Moulin Rouge, this is a great introductory piece, especially side-by-side with the first soundtrack.
ahahahahaha.......2006-02-01
Everything the other customers are saying is true: more music from the film, thankyouverymuch, not irritating pop conceits like the first. However, I would not have reviewed this album unless I found it absolutely necesary to point out that, in the climactic moments of track 5 "Come What May," Ewan MacGregor's voice is for some reason missing and replaced by a bizarre, operatic man's voice. It truly had me crying with laughter the first few times I heard it, and I wanted to share this wondrous discovery with the world.

Very Pleasant Surprise.......2007-02-19
Great mellow (not to a fault) county-rock/singer-songwriter album. Fiddle, Dobro, and Darlene Love(!) throughout.
It's not really a surprise.......2007-02-13
No, it's not a surprise that John the Wolfking of L.A. is a great record--John Phillips was the pen behind the Mamas and the Papas, transforming the emotional turmoil of the group's inner drama into some of the most classic and catchy pop music made in the late 60's as their primary songwriter and vocal arranger. Although he wasn't thought of as the group's best singer (and unfortunately didn't highlight his vocals on this record as much as he could), I think Phillips has a very soothing and emotive voice--of course he didn't compare to the technical prowess of Denny and Cass, but they were doing something different--more of a slick pop sound that was more about straight-up aesthetics. This record is pure personality.
The opener is pure magic--Phillips sings over Elvis Presley's backing band (a tight rhythm section and some great pedal steel texture) about "April Ann," a tale full of colorful and melancholy characters, quoting several popular film titles along the way. Although Phillips reportedly buried his own voice in the mix, I don't think it's really that hard to hear, and a pleasure to hear at that! After the first track, the album just keeps up the quality. The second song is another melancholy slow-burner, with great lyrics and some great stoner imagery.
Overall, Phillips' record is laid-back good times music--I guess you'd call it country-rock (because of the pedal steel), but really it doesn't fit too neatly into any genre--it's just well-written, mellow, catchy rock and roll, and after a couple listens you won't really care how it's categorized--you'll just want to keep listening. John the Wolfking is definitely a vacation and beach album--several of the songs reference the ocean and the beach ("Malibu People" and "Down the Beach") as well as referencing broad ranging locales, like Tangiers and Mississippi.
Phillips sure knows how to set a mood, and the infectiously mellow groove permeates his best solo record. I think the song that might sum it up best is "Mississippi," a listless (just like the river) thumper, with some feel-good vibes and some sly lines. John the Wolfking of L.A. puts on no pretense, and it comes off great as a result. It's too bad Phillips never achieved much solo success, since he would have produced quite a bit of great music continuing in the same vein. I highly recommend this album to fans of country/folk rock, as well to adventurous fans of the Mamas and Papas (it's not terribly similar though). I should also add that the album has several bonus tracks that are only slightly less strong than the original album, which should be listened to as its own discrete unit, separate from the bonus tracks. Hope you enjoy!
MUST HAVE.......2007-02-06
Even if you don't like the Mamas and Papas, this CD is a must for every music collection.
Long overdue!.......2007-01-09
This is an album I have been trying to buy for several years on cd but the only versions available have been a Japanese cd and an equally hard to find British version on Edsel. These always seemed to sell for upwards of $100.00.
I read in the now defunct ICE magazine that "Wolfking" was being reissued in the states at last by Varese but almost 18 months went by with no further word, nor did it appear on their website.
Well, it's here at last and well worth the wait. This was John's best post Mama's and Papa's work. The songs are all top notch and John's performances are great. The band consists of the cream of LA's session players, many of who had also worked with the M&P's and Johnny Rivers among many others.
The 8 bonus tracks include works in progress, leftover sessions and the single version of the lp's only hit, "Mississippi". My recomendation is to grab it while you can. It could be equally rare as the previous reissues soon.
Never liked the Mamas and Papas but this is great.......2006-10-27
One of my favorite all-time albums, this new reissue sounds great, if a tad different than the vinyl. I don't much care for digital, but this baby has presence and feel. Nice job. As for the music - every song is classic melodic pop/rock with superb instrumentation. I love the fact John's voice is buried somewhat in the sound. It provides an homogeneous feel that causes me to turn up the volume and surround myself with memorable music. The original collection of songs are quality, only diminished slightly by the new bonus tracks. Like another reviewer stated, this album will last a long, long time. It's a prime candidate for the Repeat button. A no-brainer.

WHERE HAS THIS GREAT STUFF BEEN HIDING????.......2007-07-10
As a longtime M&P fan, I have been very impressed with recent re-issues of previous material from the group, as well as solo material from John, Denny, Cass and Michelle. This one, however, threw me for a loop. I had no idea much of this material even existed. Once again, Varese Sarabande did a phenonmenal job with production value and great packaging. The company also states this is part of an ongoing series of John Phillips archive releases. YEAH!!!!!
What You Need To Know.......2007-07-10
Jack Of Diamonds is the second release in the ongoing "Papa John Phillips Presents" album series, following last year's acclaimed reissue of his 1970 debut solo album, John, The Wolfking Of L.A.
After the release of Wolfking, Phillips worked on a number of diverse film and record projects, including sessions for a second solo album, which he recorded intermittently in 1972 and 1973. Although that album was never completed, Jack of Diamonds contains an approximation of what it might have been.
The unreleased 13-song album, plus five bonus tracks, have been assembled into a new, never-before-heard compilation from original session recordings that were recently located.
The second solo album was a major departure from the country-rock of Wolfking and pop sound of The Mamas & The Papas, pushing a more urban, gritty, jazz-rock style (suggestive of later work by Steely Dan), reflective of time spent in New York with members of Andy Warhol's Factory. One of these songs, "Me And My Uncle," was informally passed along to the Grateful Dead and became a staple of their live shows for decades.
The album features a stellar group of musicians from the era, including members of The Crusaders (Wilton Felder, Larry Carlton and Joe Sample), Jim Gordon (Traffic, Derek and the Dominos), Van Dyke Parks (The Beach Boys' Smile album), Alan Estes (The Mothers Of Invention) and Mamas & Papas stalwarts, Hal Blaine and Joe Osborn.
Included as bonus tracks are songs from some of the other projects John was working on between 1970 and 1973, including songs intended for the final Mamas & Papas' studio album, People Like Us, the soundtrack to the Robert Altman film Phillips co-produced with Lou Adler, Brewster McCloud, and an original film and theater project called Space (Man On The Moon), produced by Andy Warhol.
All tracks are previously unreleased, except "Last Of The Unnatural Acts" and "First And Last Thing You Do," which are from the rare Brewster McCloud soundtrack.

PROOF OF MICK JAGGER"S SUPERIORITY.......2005-09-01
This is very like a Stones album with a stand-in singer and songwriter. Lovely to hear Keith's playing, as always, and his licks and sense of groove dominate the album. That part is nice, as is some great playing from Mick Taylor and Chris Spedding. The stand-in bit, however, is not so nice. Phillips voice is weak, and not in a junkie-romantic way like K or Johnny Thunders, just weak like a California folk singer who wandered out of the shallows. Unfortunately, he didn't wander out of the shallows in his songwriting: these songs are juvenile, forced with awkward rhymes and mawkish sentiments, imbued with a horrible kind of professional insincerity that the Stones would never have allowed for themselves.
Yes, maybe some people shouldn't do drugs.......2004-06-29
I've mentioned in reviews here and there that Kent, my guitar player runs a CD store. When I got married for the fourth time a couple of years ago (maybe it was the fifth, I'm not real sure about a couple of those years in New York), he gave me this cd, with a "wedding card" (really!) with...John & Yoko on it, the caption being "War is over if you want it." "Well, have you listened to it?" I asked him. "Yeah," he replied,"maybe about two or three tracks: I DARE you to listen to more." He was right, and I'm not going to be snide and babble,"the bigger they are..." However, there IS a great picture on the back cover, with Mr. Phillips and Mr. Richards, in an advanced state of, um, "bliss," stretched out on a bed of some sort. With a teensy felt-tip pen, Kent drew a line se of Mr. Phillips' mouth, saying "good heroin, Keef." And there was a line, sw of Mr. Richards' mouth with the only logical reply,"yup." That picture tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about "Pay Pack & Follow."
Really worth the wait.......2003-06-01
Like some reviewers on this page, I had been warned away from this cd. After so many years, I told myself, did I really have to go in search of more "perfect" recordings by Keef. Besides, I had never liked the Mamas and the Papas, and aside from Keef's shared drug habit, I couldn't understand why he would have hooked up with Phillips. Boy, did I turn out to be lost on this one. It's really worth the listen. In fact, it will probably stay in your cd player for days. The music is well put together, and Phillips voice is such a wonderful compliment to Richards's earthy rythms. Although many of my Stones albums have made it to the discard pile, this goes next to Keef's solo efforts and a few select bootlegs. It's gritty.
Mining those Nuggets.......2003-01-14
"Pay Pack & Follow" was recorded from 1973-1979 and produced by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. While this is not a lost Rolling Stones record any more than it is a lost Mamas & the Papas record, it a worthwhile mix of sounds that fans of both bands will find interesting. Phillips was always a bit enigmatic, the creative recluse whose writing projected him into the spotlight, but who was comfortable to share the limelight. "Mr. Blue" cooks with Richards' engaging guitar and Richards & Jagger backing up with vocals. "She's Just 14" is bluesy track about a worldly teen. "Each kiss is a sigh; each sigh lifts me right off the ground" John sings on "Wilderness of Love" that has a nice chorus. "Backstage at the ballet it's a bore; I cannot give the ladies anymore," John sings on the Stonesy ballad "Oh Virginia." One of the best songs is "Sunset Boulevard" with its folky melody and lyrical complexity. "Pussycat" doesn't work so well for me, a song with a schmaltzy melody about a guy who likes girls from a strip club. "Zulu Warrior" is a great rocker with a somewhat self-conscious lyric about the "African giant." "Dread ain't nothing to smile about," John sings on "Very Dread" with Chris Spedding's great guitar work. The CD concludes ironically with "2001," written 24 years earlier as a distant look into the future wishing that all loved ones would still be with us, being the year John Phillips passed from us. The songwriting is not uniformly good, but the performances are excellent on this wonderful timepiece. Enjoy!
Don't waste your money.......2002-05-10
I at a loss to understand the praise for this release. It should have remained lost...

I do the Time Warp again and again.......2007-05-17
For most people, especially discerning classic music afficienados, they'd rather own the soundtrack with the entire suites included, than to own a compilation. This series by Telarc is an exception, since the performances, while not definative, are still spectacular. And being its a Telarc release, sound quality is always excellent.
Telarc has release a whole slew of these symphonic Sci-Fi themed CDs, and while all of them seem to have something to offer, they all fall short of feeling like a piece of art onto themselves. This CD comes closer to being an artistic statement as any in the series, and if not for the misstep of the overlong, boring rendition of the orginal Star Trek Menagerie suite done for the TV pilot, this could have been stellar. The rest is a near perfect compilation of classic works mixed with modern classical works. The inclusion of the Menagerie suite is unnecessary here, since the TV show was already covered on the Star Tracks series. Perhaps they could have included a work from Holst:The Planets, or any other sci-fi movie.
Over all, this the best in that it came relatively early in the series which has since worn out its welcome. This disc, along with the first two Star Track CDs, is a nice collection of symphonic works.
Great Dynamic Range ... Good Selections.......2007-02-19
This older CD offers the true "Pure Digital" audio potential of CD's.
One can easily destroy an expensive speaker system using some of the selections provided.
So... keep your levels low the first time around.
You will enjoy this offering!

A Cherished Memory.......2005-10-02
I remember when I first purchased this CD. Compact Discs were hard to find (at least the kind of music I liked). Everything was still on vinyl. This sounded so incredibly powerful over my LPs. "The Menagerie: Suite" composed by Alexander Courage with Erich Kunzel conducting still sounds very impressive. This Compact Disc really demonstrates the prominent characterists of Digital recordings. I still love my soundtracks on LPs but this CD has now become a nostalgic part of collection of film music.
From a Galaxy Far Far Away to the year 2001.......2003-07-08
Time Warp brought together the best of the science fiction world. Everything on this cd is classic. The Alien closing title, "The Menagerie," and my favorite, "Also Sprach Zarathustra."
Although Strauss' renewed version of "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" isn't as good as the original, it is definatley great. I think only Dorsey's "Ascent" was a let down. I did not enjoy that piece.
Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra from "2001: A Space Odyssey" is brilliant. The entire cd is full of artistic minds.
Classic sci-fi gets the symphonic treatment!.......2003-04-02
"Time Warp" was the first recording by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops that I ever purchased. And it, without a doubt, was money well spent.
The album is a sci-fi lover's delights, featuring one-of-a-kind orchestral renditions of popular scores. Kunzel and company have outdone themselves with their performance on the rarely heard "The Menagerie: Suite", composed by Alexander Courage for the pilot episode ("The Cage") of "Star Trek". John Williams's "Superman: Love Theme" and "Star Wars: Throne Room" sound clearer and more majestic than in their original soundtrack forms.
Over fifteen minutes of the classical music heard in Kubrick's "2001" are presented here and that alone makes this an essential purchase.

Glorious!.......2004-06-04
--John Taverner--
Taverner was born about 1490 in Lincolnshire, England, and died not far from his birthplace 55 years later. He studied at Oxford, in the college founded by Wolsey, later re-christened Christ Church by Henry VIII. There is some controversy in the details of Taverner's religious life during the stormy period of Reformation and Counter-Reformation in England. Taverner is reported to have given up composition during this period, but again musicologists are not certain that pieces attributed to earlier years may have in fact come as late as the 1530s. Taverner was a leading musical figure in his time, a time when musical styles were changing rapidly.
--Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas--
Regardless of Taverner's other composition timings, this mass comes from a relatively early period. The ornate style of the 1510s and 1520s is very evident here. It continues to inspire composers down to this day. The mass is named for chants for Trinity Sunday. It includes treble, mean, countertenors, tenor and bass. The music in the movements is roughly the same length despite varying text amounts.
There are two additional pieces, the 'Leroy' Kyrie and the Dum transisset Sabbatum, more austere and simple in form. This hearkens to the older English tradition of keeping the Kyrie separate from the canon of the mass.
--Liner Notes--
Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is a piece by from an illuminated initial in 'Les Grandes Heures de Jean duc de Berry', being of essentially the same time period as Taverner.
--The Tallis Scholars--
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.
Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Taverner deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music. It is remarkable!
The pinnacle of early church music.......2003-07-13
For reasons I'll never understand I have developed a passion for sung Latin masses and have collected a number by Byrd, Tallis, Taverner, Palestrina and others.
But after listening again and again I cannot find any greater expression of the startling nature of these masses than the Tallis Scholar's interpretation of John Taverner's "Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas". Ethereal it is, but full of astonishing passion as well as mystery - from the tremulous silence of the cathedral setting and the first intake of breath by the choir.
What is it about this church music that speaks even to a modern ear? These are love songs - testaments to the mystery and power in which the people of the time beheld the almighty. Plain and simple, they are love songs to God.

Iron man: Pete Townshend.......2007-06-21
Dig! is the song who Pete play with the Who, you can listen here John Lee Hooker, this is a great cd.
caveat emptor.......2006-12-13
Some customer reviews here may prove misleading to some other customers. While Iron Man is a perfectly enjoyable and well executed piece of Townshend work, it is a minor one. Who and Townshend fans need to understand that this is a piece of musical theater based on children's literature. It features several guest vocalists and only one track that can really stand alone (Friend is a Friend).
Worth A Listen for Any Who Fan..........2006-09-23
If you are a fan of The Who than this is definately an album you should have. It is a Pete Townshend solo album, but it's also contains the first new Who songs after they broke up following It's Hard. The songs are Dig and Fire, and these along with Pete's solo songs make for a very enjoyable musical experience. It is a concept album, so like some of The Who's other work, it tells a story through the music, which I have always been a big fan of. I think it is one of Pete's finest albums and a rare gem for Who fans.

This two-CD set is a newly remastered compilation of 28 songs taken from the renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir's recordings of the 1960s and '70s. The Choir, directed by Richard P. Conde, is supported by alternating organists, the Columbia Symphonic Band, the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The conductors include Arthur Harris, Jerold D. Ottley, and the great Eugene Ormandy. The singing is superb. The 300-voice choir's justly famous sound, which combines depth, weight, and clarity, and its impeccable intonation, balance, and flexibility are everywhere in evidence, while the splendid instrumental forces set mood and atmosphere and add the luster of triumphantly ringing trumpets to the many rousing marches. The mostly familiar popular songs celebrate prideful uplift and patriotic fervor; partly "traditional," partly "composed," they deserve their status as universal favorites. Unfortunately, they are consistently compromised by the quality of the arrangements, which owe more to the Hollywood soundtrack than to the indigenous American musical tradition. They are full of infelicitous modulations, abrupt key changes, and incongruous introductions, and several vocal settings seem at variance with the meaning of the song. Woody Guthrie's beloved "This Land Is Your Land" is almost unrecognizable; "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" is sung too "straight" and lacks the idiomatic style and inflection of a spiritual. Most convincing are Sousa's marches and devout hymns like "Rock of Ages," which are allowed to retain their simplicity and speak for themselves. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Good but I prefer a more classic style.......2005-06-13
This 2-CD set is a compilation of 28 songs of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's. The voice are superb but there are too often some "stirring" introductions and some vocal performances inside the songs that transform these patriotic songs in a kind of Hollywood show. I prefer a more classic style for patriotic songs because it is easier to listen or to sing along when you know what will happen in the next 5 seconds. Simplicity is the key word for a good result but in this case the key word is "complexity with vocal performances".
