Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dee Dee goes to Mali to find her ancestral roots........2007-07-10

Dee Dee goes to Mali to find her ancestral roots and makes this CD with African musicians.
Rhythmically strong throughout, the most appealing tracks are the jazz covers.
The standout is her revisiting "Afro Blue" in a more percussive version than her 70's classic. Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" is given a slightly slower pace but is equally good, and her version of Nina Simone's "Four Women" is compelling. There's also a real barnstorming version of "Compared To What".
The other tracks may be too African for many on this interesting project.

Her inspiration for finding `home' was that she's spent much of her recent career "being other people" with projects celebrating female jazz giants Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. So she wanted to find herself and "wanted to get percussive".

Suitably enough, the set opens with an immaculate version of the track made famous by another female jazz singer "finding herself" today, Abbey Lincoln. "Afro Blue" will always be classic but this version seems to resonate stronger than ever being one of the ten recorded in Bamako with Cheick Tidiane Seck.
There's a nice section on him arriving at Bamako Station on the DVD and the place to be for a great Saturday night out is Oumou Sangaré's hotel.

The DVD is a beautifully filmed documentary of the recording of the album with the Malian backdrop, even with scenes of urban poverty, it's a great 45 minute advert (bound to turn up on cable channel at some stage and well worth watching).

Seck is the link between Dee Dee's American jazz and Africa. The studio is full of traditional instruments, ("I want the boom boom" she says) and it a mixture of local musicians and her regular trio of Edsel Gomez (Puerto Rico, pianist). Ira Coleman (bassist worked with Angelique Kidjo, Denise Jannah and Klaus Doldinger) and Minino Garay (Arginitian percussionist).

"Bani" (Bad Spirits), "Sakhodougou" (The Griots) and "Massane Cissé" (Red Earth) have been told in the oral tradition of the `griots' since the twelfth century and is what global music is all about, even if the purists might disagree with Dee Dee's contributions in English. Purist or not, the duet on "Djarabi" (Oh My Love) with Oumou Sangaré is special and there's no denying that the vocal contribution of Kabiné Kouyaté on "The Griots" is a find.

One of the better tracks that attempt a modern griot mix English/skat/Bambara is "Dee Dee'=" co-written with Baba Sissoko and "Mama Digna Sara Ye" (Mama Don't Ever Go Away) written with Malian diva Ramata Diakité.

On the DVD she explains at length about how she wanted to make this an album for and by women. Good choice then to cover a Nina Simone song, `Four Women' and the track that's getting all-round acclaim "Bambo" (No More) with its anti-forced marriage. Originally composed by Tata `Bambo' Kouyaté (who sings with Dee Dee), it was so influencial, the government outlawed forced marriage in the 1960s (not that it still doesn't go on of course around the world).

Two obvious sides of Dee Dee come out on the soul-modal-jazz interpretation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" with suitable roots lyrics from Dee Dee and the blues with Bassékou Kouyaté and three other n'goni players, two percussionists and Bassékou's wife on "Children Go `Round".

The last three tracks were recorded in Paris, where she lives with her husband/co-producer Jean Marie Durand. "Red Earth" (Massane Cissé) rocks the blues as Dee really lets you have it with Fatoumata "Mama" Kouyaté.

My highlights: "Red Earth", "Afro Blue", "Footprints", "Bambo", "The Griots", "Four Women".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great accompaniment to Vheissu.......2007-03-25

The first two tracks on this EP are amazing B-Sides to the album Vheissu, that for the life of me I can't figure why they were left off in the first place. They are brilliant. Also the following acoustic versions of three songs give them a new light, especially the very stripped down "Under a Killing Moon". This is a definite recommendation to fans of Thrice.

5 out of 5 stars I know what lies beneath..........2007-02-22

I had already downloaded the songs on this record before it came out, but still bought it regardless.

If you're a diehard Thrice fan. This is a "must have".

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it.......2006-04-23

This EP contains two really good B-sides from Vheissu (Flags of Dawn and The Weight of Glory) and live versions of Red Sky, Under A Killing Moon, Of Dust and Nations, and For Miles. The live versions are softer renditions of these songs, and it really changes the dynamic of the songs and I think Dustin does a fantastic job on them.

As for the two B-Sides, I really don't understand why they weren't put on the album. Thrice is my favorite band and Vheissu is their best album talent-wise, but there are a few songs on there I would easily trade for these two. Great songs.

If you've liked any of the Thrice albums, especially Vheissu, this is definitely an ideal pick up for you. If you've been a fan all along, this is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for any Thrice fan.......2006-04-20

Only 6 songs, but it's great. I can't believe "Flags of Dawn" and "Weight of Glory" where kept off of Vheissu - they are absolutely incredible songs.

The other 4 songs aren't new, but they ARE new versions of them. The only one I had heard before was "Of Dust and Nations," which was from AOL Sessions. The rest are awesome acoustic versions of the originals. "Under Killing Moon" was especially interesting to hear since the original is so heavy.

Maybe it will be released in the US soon so you can avoid the hefty import price-tag. However, die-hards shouldn't have a problem shelling out the cash for it. If you love Thrice, its worth it.

If you are looking for a collection of romantic songs to be played while having a drive or a walk with your romantic interest or even by yourself, this is the one to have: issued by the European Sony/Bravo label, it focuses on the songs who were on the radio in the 80's. If you are a "son of the 80's" and enjoy music to awaken your contemplative and quietest side, buy it! While hard to find outside the US, it is worth having. Further recommendations: purchase also Volumes 2, 5 and 7, which are MUCH better than some of the most recent items of the collection.

THE BUFFALO TAPES ( MY SO-CALLED FRIENDS) 3.5/5....The last song of the cd, very calm, very informal, but not my kind again. Versatile vocals from Espen is what i can enjoy here. Well, no more to say: Just go and Buy it! This is a must have to any good compilation.

4 out of 5 stars A Norwegian Star On The Rise!.......2002-08-27

Not far out of his teens when he recorded this album, Espen Lind shows astounding promise. In addition to the vocals, he performs nearly all the instrumentation, as well as producing.

Not only are his talents varied, but so is his musical style. He deftly pulls off the sublime balladry of "When Susannah Cries" and "American Love", the energetic pop of "Messing With Me" and "All I Want Is An Angel" (perhaps my favorite from this album), and the plaintive lament of "The Buffalo Tapes" (another of my favorites), not to mention the trippy, funky "Baby You're So Cool", very much in the spirit of Prince.

If you're looking for an impressive and masterful pop craftsman, look no further than Espen Lind. He's a force to be reckoned with!

5 out of 5 stars A big hit from Norway.......2001-01-11

Espen Lind, who is very well known on MTV-Europe, has made a big splash with this debut cd. I first heard him on the BOP BOYS cd last year and thought...hey...he sounds great. Writing, producing and performing on this cd makes him sound like a well-rounded musician. He has a cute face and crisp clear voice. The tracks come across with very dynamic lyrics and brilliant instrumentation. It touches all aspects of music from the serious to the loveable party boy. He really sounds like he is enjoying himself during production. These songs sound like they are coming from the heart.

2 out of 5 stars Not much going on here........2005-09-30

"Universally Speaking" was the fourth single off the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "By the Way" in Europe. It saw release in two parts, this part (with the face closeup rather than the half body picture) and includes one b-side, an instrumental "Slowly Deeply" and a video track for "Universally Speaking".

The title track is an exciting alt-pop song, not the sort of thing you'd expect from the Chili Peppers ten years ago, but still phenomenally good. With a driving rhythm and a clever arrangement soaked in vocal harmonies, strings, and organs, it shows just how far the band has come over the years.

"Slowly Deeply" is decent, but truth to be told it feels like a demo. It's nto bad, but it's not worth going out and getting unless you need to have it. The video I'm kind of whatever about, I don't ask a rule buy CDs for videos. this one is really of quite limited value.

You should be familiar with the title track, so I will not mention it except to say: I love the Peppers, but they are really stooping to a new low these days with the seemingly infinite release of "new" singles. What is the deal? The b-side here is a short instrumental that is pretty good and the disc also includes the video for "Universally Speaking"; that said, the price of this "import" is ludicrous. It would be worth purchasing for maybe $2.99, but that's it. The Peppers need to lay off the singles (most of which sound like nearly identical versions of cuts from By The Way with different lyrics) and release a proper album. This is simply expoiting the very people who have made these bunch of drug-ravaged, overgrown adolescents (but damn good musicians) rich and successful beyond belief.
