Great Album.......2006-06-20
Having listened to the song samples of this album and liking what I'd heard of the Youngbloods, I decided to buy my first Jesse Colin Young solo album. It was every bit as good as I was hoping it'd be. The CD comes with a booklet complete with lyrics to all the songs, as well as a list of all the musicians who played on the album and the instruments they used. Pretty impressive for a CD reissue of an album 30 years old. I was expecting just a one sided paper insert with the album cover on the front.
The music is quite good. There's a lot of guitar, but there's harmonica, flute, clarinet, sax, trombone, violin, and piano as well, just to kind of give you an idea what the music sounds like. While it does sound like early 70's singer/songwriter rock music, the album definitely still holds up well after 30 years.
I've listened to it four times since the mailman brought it yesterday. It's not very long, of course, as most vinyl albums weren't, but what is there is outstanding. I'll definitely be getting more of his CDs.
too sweet.......2005-10-19
I've worn this out in four formats-8 track, cassette, lp and finally cd. This is 70's california pop at it's best. Solid songs, solid rhythm section, a brilliant solist (Jim Rothmeil) perfect piano parts and one of the most distinctive voices in pop music. A little pop, a little jazz, a little country, just a great record.
The highlight is probably the jazzy Ridgetop, Jesse's ode to his Marin County home, followed closely by the title cut (a song about his then 6 year old daughter) and a cajun influenced Lafayette Waltz/Jambalaya
This cd is too sweet not to own it. Get it NOW

I'll take Jesse's sugartenor over any Wagnerian heldentenor anyday. This record benefits from expert arrangements. The brass arrangement on COUNTRY HOME is absolutely perfect. I can't believe I'm living in a world where Kenny Rogers is a household name and Jesse has been relegated to obscurity. Every track on JULI is an absolute frigging gem. If you don't buy this record, then God has every right to beat you up.

I bought this album after listening to it once at my future husbands house(1976). It won me over then and is still one of my favorite cd's. Just a bit of background info on the songs. The whole album was written in reguards to his home in the Sausalito Hills, hence Ridgetop. Juli is his daughter who was very young when the song was written. Basically it is a statement to all about his life and how much he loves it. Yes he really did work in S.F.

Timeless Classic.......2003-06-10
Since I live on a ridgetop in Wyoming, where it is windy all of the time, and sometimes foggy, there is nothing sophomoric nor immature about the lyrics to RidgeTop. There is a deeper message there. The lyrics on several of the songs are ballad-like, not pop music. The melodies are both peaceful and uplifting at the same time. I have listened to these songs since the day they were new and while I still love to rock out to other artists, the sounds on this album affect me in a way like no other music.
All The Way Full.......2003-03-30
First off, the name of the album is Song For Julia, not Song For Juli. Listen to Song For Julia and Jesse sings, "This is a song for Jool Eee A". Anyone who knows this album knows the title.
I bought this album when it first came out. I listened to both sides and loved the whole thing. Everyone for whom I played it also loved it. (Birds of a feather?) Needless to say, I wanted to see how it aged. Some of the music I thought was great back then I can barely stand to listen to now. (See my review for Bloodrock 3.) Does this album stand the test of time? IMHO, I must answer "yes". Any song on this album could be in the rotation of any "smooth jazz" radio station, but it also has a folky, innocent, California vibe to it. Many came after Jesse (Michael Franks and Richard Torrance, to name a few) but they can only match the magic and diversity on this album. Buy this album, turn the lights down low, and listen to it. Don't put it on as background music. You can do that later, after you become familiar with it. This album will send you. Yes, some of the lyrics are dated and almost sophomoric. But on the whole, this album captures a feel and sound of a more innocent time and listening to it can magically take you there.

Like redwood dust and sunshine.......2002-07-01
Relax with some good friends while Jesse et al take you from soulful and serene to the edge of funk without a hitch. Picture an endlessly sunny afternoon in the hills above Santa Cruz, surrounded by your best mix of eclectic friends. A pre-fame, full spectrum slice of style from a still unique voice in a well-traveled genre. No pretense, no polish. From the days when you brought your list of favorite tunes to the studio, played like you meant it and worried about the album cover later. A favorite.
A wonderful piece of music.......1999-01-14
There are still a few vinyl albums I keep because I haven't found them on CD yet. Finally, this gem has made it to CD format. "Song for Julie" is upbeat and inspiring and sounds as good today as it did when it came out in the '70's

I bought this album twice back in the 70's. It something you can let play over and over. This should have been #1 best seller. Just not enough exposure. You will enjoy it thoroughly.

A million years ago I listened to this album endlessly with an old friend, Gina on her B.I.C. speakers. Are you still out there?
Got an iPod for Christmas this year and was loading armloads of CD's...one of them, Elephant Mountain, got me to thinking about this one. I'm heartbroken that it is now unavailable. I would buy two copies if I could.

Tripping Through the Fog.......2001-06-29
I first listened to works of Jesse Colin Young back in the very early 70's while stationed overseas. I found Jesse's music compelling and soothing. His music enabled me to at least temporarily escape from my sometimes maddening military duties and float freely back to America. Jesse's music remains clear & crisp even now, some three decades later. I continue to cherish his melodic lyrics.
Forever Young.......2000-04-23
Its not very often that an album is issued that at least one song doesn't stink. "Song For Juli" is one of those rarities. This album is enjoyable from the first note to the last and shows the breadth of Young's stylistic talents. "Ridgetop" is probably the most played song from the album and like the fan from San Francisco I like to turn it up while driving across the Golden Gate on the way to my ridge (Mt. Tam). The best aspect of the album beside the quality of the music is the way each song flows effortlessly into the next. There are no disconcerting interludes here. You've got rock, jazz, country, and Cajun all smoothly rolled into one big piece of ear candy that sounds as fresh as the day it was issued. You just can't help but love it!
Song For Juli.......2000-01-07
I have listened to this album more times than any other album in my collection. I have also given this album as a gift-as it is a sure winner with a song for eveybody. Every time I cross the Golden Gate Bridge, my mind starts singing "Ridgetop" and sice I started playing the CD now (my vinyl copy is pretty well played out) I realize just how great the music is and how it remains fresh to this day. A true classic from the mid-70's. This album has stood the test of time.
