I Can't Get Enough Of This Man.......2007-06-27
This CD is great! So glad I purchased it. I listen to it all the time. As well as his other CDs.
Keeping soul alive and well.......2007-06-21
I find it astounding that Anthony Hamilton had music this good under his belt yet still couldn't get a major label record deal. Soulife, the first CD of 'new old' music that was released after Jermaine Dupri's So So Def and big guns Arista picked him up was so good it fooled me into believing it was all new stuff - and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Hamilton can do any wrong in my eyes but this second instalment of music from the vaults is genuinely just as good as, and can stand alongside his 'legitimate' releases with pride. The man is just that good. The investigative journalist in me wonders who's making the money from these releases (and if Hamilton is making any at all) and I already see parallels between his situation and Frank McComb's but I would argue he wins either way. True, Ain't Nobody Worryin' is barely two years old but CDs like "Southern Comfort" will help keep him in people's minds for a while longer, could well bring new fans into his base and will make all of us all the more eager for his next 'proper' release, soon may it come.
Good production by Fanatic, Doug Coleman and Ced Colo but as always, it's all about that voice. There's an honesty, angst and yearning in Hamilton's voice that is unique to him and can only be earned through experience. Mind you, there's nothing gasp-inducing here. None of the songs in this set reach me like "Float" did on Comin' from Where I'm From or like "Change Your World" on "Ain't Nobody Worryin'" did for example, but I'm particularly feeling "They Don't Know", "Please" and "Sailing Away". All in all, it's a solid collection of songs. I thoroughly enjoy listening to it. Here's to another man who's keeping soul alive and well. 4.5 stars.
Now this is "Anthony Hamilton"!.......2007-06-19
As most reviewers have already stated, this is NOT "new" music by
Anthony Hamilton and Thank God for that. Hamilton is one of the most talented artist of today, however, I've always felt he was signed by the wrong label and most of his CD's have consequently gone over "lukewarm" as a result. As I understand it, the songs in this collection were previously written and recorded before Hamilton hit the "big time". He sings his heart out w/this CD and demonstrates what a deeply soulful singer he truly is. One can only hope that someday his current label will nuture this side of Hamilton and get him back to his obvious passion, Old time R&B.
This one's for those who have not discovered Anthony Hamilton, as well as regular fans.......2007-06-06
As you can see most reviews are 4 to 5 stars, and rightly so. I won't get into the track breakdown, for what makes a cd worth it to me is one that you can just press play, sit back, and enjoy.
If you were a previous fan, I think you would agree that Anthony Hamilton has had this quality in the past, and certainly this is true here. I won't get into what which was better than which.
If you aren't a fan already, I would recommend this cd, for some, well for lack of better terms, southern comfort. I can't imagine anyone to be disappointed.
I think we are going to see a lot of grammy's heading toward Anthony Hamilton's direction.
I HARDLY EVER GIVE 4 STARS....BUT THIS IS VERY GOOD!.......2007-05-29
Anthony Hamilton is a truly talented artist. He is not your average r&b artist.
I really 5 songs on this cd.
tracks:1. They don't know
2.Magnolia's room
3. Why - My favorite track on the cd.It makes me think.
6.falling in love again
7.Trouble
I DIDN'T CARE FOR TRACKS 4 AND 5 JUST BECAUSE OF THE CUSSING. BUT OTHERWISE THIS IS A REALLY GOOD CD.
This cd is not like any of his other material. Out of all his CDs,I like this one the best. This cd is definitely grammy, soul train award worthy.
Give this artist the credit he deserves!

A product of the '70s.......2005-06-05
S.C. is about equally split between quality funk tunes (with somewhat dated 1970s instrumentation) and pointless noodling (with heavily dated electric piano).
The Crusaders at their PEAK!.......2005-01-08
An excellent choice for MCA to punch out in 1997. This CD combines the complete Double LP issued in 1974 from Blue Thumb records. The original liner notes are lacking but that is the only hiccup with this CD.
The combined talents of Joe Sample(Keyboards), Wayne Henderson (Trombone), Wilton Felder(Tenor Sax), Stix Hooper(Drums) and Larry Carlton(Guitar) take this CD to the pinnacle of the Crusaders career.
Tight and well-balanced with a musical bravado that matched the time (1974). It still does.
Combine the Crusaders "Groove Crusade" with "Southern Comfort" and you will have a complete retrospective of one of the Grand Groups of Funk.
incredible.......2004-03-18
i was looking for this album in one of the amazon lists of essential jazz tonight so that i could look in similar style albums for something new. as i failed to find this album listed in any of the 12 lists (12!), i thought whomever put those lists together was obviously either too young to be aware of this album, or simply too clueless.
this is an album that i would put in the top ten of any list of jazz that i would create. these musicians were incredible in this album (and in Free As The Wind), and this album contains maybe my favorite all time jazz instrumental (the whole album is instrumental, as i recall).
there are no bad pieces on this album. like pink floyd's the dark side of the moon, or peter gabriel's so, you just move from one outstanding tune to the next. and it never gets old. i've been listening to it since it came out in 1974 and i still have to turn up the sound when one of my compilations plays a tune from this album.
BUY IT.
and don't forget to turn up the volume.
One of my all-time favorite albums.......2003-05-12
This CD captures the Crusaders at their peak: Driving, infections rhythms, compositions built to solo over, great ensemble arrangements and top-notch solos by Wilton Felder (tenor and soprano sax), Joe Sample (piano), Wayne Henderson, trombone and Larry carlton, guitar.
Tremendous music from start to finish, with Felder's tenor solo on "Whispering Pines" and soprano solo on "Lilies of the Nile" especially delightful.
This is a delight to the ears........2003-02-01
WOW. The moment you press play (make sure the volume is HIGH) you will be a huge fan. The drums and bass together provide an extra funky-pocket for the rest of these guys to throw down upbeat to mellow jazz/grooves. This album has great sound quality, close to later Steely Dan albums. Buy it. Like another wrote before me, "it's greasy funk".

Customer Reviews:
E G Kight.......2006-04-05
I'm giving this a five star rating because of two important factors, firstly, EG's exceptional singing ability and, secondly, the lead guitarist, Bill Hines, passionate playing on "Sad, Sad Sunday" (and other cuts). His evocative and understated playing is precisely what puts this song over top. By all accounts it should be a blues standard...it's that good.
I also like "Just One More", especially the tasteful piano accompaniment. The rest of the material is somewhat tamed for my tastes. Yet, it is EG's endearing singing quality and Hines soulful guitar playing that makes very good material sound superb, no matter how you mix it. The shere magic of Hines playing off of EC makes me wonder what an album of these two inspired artists would sound like? I'd definately consider buying it...if this ever happens.
Surprisingly refreshing.......2003-09-16
I had a couple of EG's other CD's, so I was anxious to get this new one. I was lucky enough to pick it up at one of her live performances. I've followed her career for a while now, and it's interesting to see how people who work hard and truly love what they do finally do get what they deserve. EG seems to be a genuine person, and her fans seem to genuinely love her.
EG wrote or co-wrote nine songs on SOUTHERN COMFORT and I've heard that it's getting a lot of airplay, especially on XM Radio. I don't know which songs are becoming listener favorites, but if I had to choose two from the album, it would be "Cry Like A Rainy Day" and "Just One More."
Some artists wouldn't dare attempt to cover an Etta James song, but EG not only attempted it with "Cry Like A Rainy Day," she nailed it - with such passion and conviction that you'd think she wrote it, gave birth to it. Etta should be proud...
And the closing song "Just One More" is so different that it takes the listener by surprise. Prepare yourself, because it may take your breath, like it did mine. As some of the critics have written, it's "a haunting tale of regret" and it will make you want to pick up the phone and call a loved one you haven't talked to in a while...
I've heard that EG has been working with some of my other favorite artists like Robert Cray and Merle Haggard, and from her website itinerary, it looks like she's going to be with Phoebe Snow and Delbert McClinton in the next few weeks. What an interesting mix. It just goes to show that good music doesn't necessarily have to be categorized. Call it blues or country, EG's music is just plain good music. I'd recommend SOUTHERN COMFORT to anyone who just wants to hear a fabulously rich voice, some interesting new material, and some great musicians.

Spiritual, Moving, Beautiful.......2004-09-20
No one sings a song like Ian Matthews -- his sweet tenor and gentle delivery wraps itself around a song cycle here that is extraordinary. Mixing in rock, olde-english folk ballads, covers (including a signature take on James Taylor's Something in the Way She Moves), soaring harmonies and distinctive pedal guitar work, these two long out-of-print albums are a revelation! Heady, dreamy, swirling melodies that will transport the listener to another place -- this release is a must-have for sensitive, thoughtful music fans.

Harvest Box Set: A Fantastic Overview.......1999-08-08
Anyone looking to explore the early years of progressive music need look no farther then this fine 5CD box set. Representing the years 1969-1976 this set is one of the most well put together sets attempted by a major label to put into perspective it's own history. Housed in an oversized book format, the 120 page booklet enclosed features many rare photos of the Harvest rouster as well as an extensive overview. The music inside speaks for itself with many fine moments from Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, Sid Barrett,Barclay James Harvest, Pete Brown, ELO, The Pretty Things, Deep Purple,Babe Ruth, Gryphon and many more. Highly recomended for all those interested in the formative years of progressive music and it's evolving influance on future music, popular and otherwise.

Excellent!.......2005-03-09
This CD is simply great. Jimmie Van Zant (cousin of Ronnie, Johnny, & Donnie) gives us some great southern rock tunes on this CD. The first song, "Get Up", is a great country-rocker that reminds me a little of Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster" (only this one is better). "Bad Habits" is a bit more hard/southern rock (not as much country) and is also a great song. "Ronnie's Song" is great and brings tears to my eyes. It's a bit like "Free Bird" in how it starts with a slower & softer tone and turns into a great jam. I give "Free Bird" a 10/10 & I give this one a 9/10. It's that good! "Angel in the Night" is another good one. Not as good as the first 3, but close. "Southern Comfort" doesn't really do much for me. I usually skip that one, but I listen to it occasionally. We then go on to a pretty decent cover of "Simple Man". It's not as good as the original, obviously, but I doubt that Jimmie intended it to be. Next is "Here To Stay", a great country tune about a family that lives on a farm and is determined never to sell it. You will hear a little bit of "Sweet Home Alabama" at a few parts, but in no way is this a copy of it. The final song, "Party in the Parking Lot" is basically just a good boogie tune that will make you want to get up and dance. Maybe not the best tune to end the album with, but still a good one.
If you're a Skynyrd fan (or even just a southern rock fan), your collection will not be complete without this album.
I know, the whole stars & bars cover design will be offensive to some people and will probably stop certain people from buying it (which is an understandable reaction). I just wish everybody could understand that they don't use it as a sign of racism or to be offensive; it's just a symbol of the South to them.
Another Van Zant Joins In With A Hot One.......2002-11-03
Jimmie Van Zant, a cousin of Ronnie, Donnie, and Johnny, has joined the family business with a hot-rockin' album. SOUTHERN COMFORT mixes the styles of Skynyrd, the Outlaws, and .38 Special in a totally original way, with a combination of blazing rockers and soulful ballads. The only second-rate cut is the insipid ballad "Angel In The Night", and while "Ronnie's Song" and the remake of "Simple Man" have been given a bum rap, they are actually excellent. Overall, this is a great album by a member of rock's first family of singers.
SOUTHERN ROCK IS ALIVE AND WELL IN JIMMIE VAN ZANT !!!.......2001-07-11
Southern Comfort is truly just that. SOUTHERN COMFORT it is absolutely the best cd that I have purchased in a long time. Every song on the cd is well worth listening to. The haunting melody of RONNIES SONG sends goosbumps over ones entire body. I had the great fortune to be asked on stage by Jimmie himself recently and I can tell you it was the thrill of a lifetime. He truly is a Southern Gentleman. Yes, its true that he does sound like and also bears resemblance to cousin Ronnie but he is definitely a tremendous talent in his own right. It may be true that because he is a Van Zant may have led me to see him originally but the fact that he is a wonderful artist and preformer as well as a uniquely gentle person will definely keep me coming back for more. ROCK ON JIMMIE ROCK ON!!!!
Pretty solid southern rock.......2001-02-12
Okay, of course he's cashing in on his family-name (Jimmy's a cousin of the late Ronnie) and, yes, this sounds a bit like a poor man's Lynyrd Skynyrd. But anyone who likes Molly Hatchet or Skynyrd (old OR new) won't be dissapointed with this one. It contains solid, competent southern rock, which is al too rare in this day and age. Apart from that: Jimmy really seems to believe in this type of music and really loves playing it.
Jimmie Van Zant-Southern Comfort.......2000-11-15
As stated in other reviews I've read,I must agree that the Van Zant family has yet another great musician/song writer in Jimmie Van Zant. Southern Comfort is a must have for the southern rock music fan. Ronnie's Song and the Skynyrd cover of Simple Man are for me the high lights of this CD. Buy it....you won't be disappointed.

Revelatory Lost Music.......2005-11-16
Aaah, the sweet tenor of Ian Matthews, singing like a lost angel surrounded in three part harmonies.....This album, an amalgam of outtakes from the first two Matthews Southern Comfort records, plus some live BBC recordings made during this period, is well worth searching out. Both versions of "Touch Her if You Can" are simply beautiful, with those three part harmonies filled out by slide guitar still ringing in my ears. His signature take on James Taylor's "Something in the Way She Moves" is as sweet and moving as the original, and he does a trippy, pyschedelic sunburst version of Neil Young's "I Believe in You" that is a must-have. Add to it great versions of "Jinkson Johnson" and a dramatic reading of "And me" and you have one hell of record. This does not sound at all like a odds-and-sods patchwork -- if there's more in the vaults from this period I look forward to hearing it. Matthews' 1993 handwritten notes about his time with this band are also revealing, included with the disc. Please re-issue this cd!
