Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

I cannot review the product which I know is great , as I was billed for it, but never received it.
Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04
With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.
The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.
Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.
For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.
Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.
Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24
Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.
I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03
All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-09-03
"Jazz After Hours" is an ensemble recording featuring Lisa Hilton on piano, Eric Marienthal on sax, Tal Bergman on drums, and Reggie McBride on bass. Of the eleven tracks, seven are originals and four are arrangements of jazz classics. I have to admit that I prefer Hilton's solo piano work, but this is a really nice selection of pieces that place an emphasis on fun. "Malibu" has been receiving extensive airplay in the US and abroad, and recently reached the #1 position on the Top 20 SIngles World Jazz Chart. On most of the tracks, the piano is part of the ensemble rather than the lead, but the band is excellent and Eric Marienthal really cooks on sax.
"Malibu" is an upbeat and joyous tribute to Hilton's seaside hometown. Known for its carefree surfers and sunny beaches, this piece captures that kind of party spirit. Bill Evans' "Waltz For Debby" is a beautiful trio for piano, bass, and drums - soulful and sensuous, and a great arrangement. "Nocturne" was inspired by Chopin and is a standout. Cool, dark, and slinky, it does indeed sound like the middle of the night. "All That" is another favorite, and sounds like a blast to play. Hilton and Marienthal pull out the stops and really let loose. Duke Ellington's "Azure" is again piano, bass, and drums, and is leisurely and "bluesy." "When We Met" is the only solo piano piece, and I love it. Composed in the style of a standard, it is both old and new, and has a beautiful, romantic feeling. "Listen to Your Heart" closes the CD on a gentle, intimate note.
"Jazz After Hours" is a great album for relaxing and reenergizing, a backdrop for an intimate dinner, or even good party music.
Lisa Does It Again!!.......2004-06-02
Her latest album contains the same formula as her last release. Assisted by veteran Saxophonist Eric Marienthal, she continues her venture of providing great, classic Jazz. "Malibu" starts the CD off right with an assist from Bassist Reggie McBride and Drummer Tal Bergman. Her covers of the Miles Davis classic, "All Blues" and Duke Ellington's, "Azure" gives fans of 50's & 60's Jazz something to appreciate. My personal favorites were "Listen to Your Heart" and "All That". The old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies to this CD. Lisa definitely sticks to the same old routine and she scores another winner!

Worth Checking Out.......2002-11-14
A very good CD from one of the great 80's bands.
Hey, I was right all along.......2001-07-13
[This piece appeared in RAM (Rock Australia Magazine), Sydney, Australia on February 12 1986.]
Comsat Angels/7 Day Weekend/Jive Records
UK rock has this deadly no man's land for many of those scooped out of the 'indie' charts by major labels. You may lose the support of the fertile but faddish rock press, but you may not gain a hit in return.
Thus for Comsat Angels, who went from a 1980 indie success with Independence Day straight to three excellent albums on Polydor. Then a long hiatus to a new label, and they're all tarted up for a shaky fourth album. And, uh oh, album five features that vapid pop single I'm Falling. Yet could it be that Comsat Angels have laughed off the odds, found their voice and heart? They have, bless them.
The scratching waspish guitar and brute bass of Still It's Not Enough is their Sheffield heavy-metal of old. And the high ghosted keyboards and bright guitar atmospherics of Believe It are Comsat Angels in their most windswept mood: 'Tonight the sky looks close enough to/almost reach out and touch but/the light is playing tricks on me again'.
Forever Young is another trademark song, slow and architectural in its buildup, as effective as its ringing chords and stolid bass. High Tide and You Move Me are also up with their best. There are even a few here, like Day One and You're The Heroine, whose clipped clockwork funk is more typical of Sheffield than the band's usual unrepentant guitar sound.
Comsat Angels have gone unchecked on their own path as few bands have managed through the first half of the 80s. Think of other five-year UK bands still worth having, and you're up against the likes of Joy Division/New Order, Simple Minds, A Certain Ratio, or fellow-Sheffielders Cabaret Voltaire.
Whilst perfectly happy to stay closer to the mainstream than most of these, leader Stephen Fellows has still carved out a very distinctive mood and voice for himself. May his rewards be more this time than merely beating the odds.

GET OUT OF A BAD MOOD!!!!!!!.......2006-01-17
THIS CD PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERYTIME I HEAR IT! JUDY KAYE IS A MOST UNDERUTILIZED TALENT ON THE BROADWAY SCENE, AND THIS CD PROVES IT. CLICK THIS RECORDING INTO YOUR CART THIS INSTANT!
Pure Energy.......2000-09-17
What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

Very Tight.......2000-05-28
So what that only one song has a heavy guitar riff; what jazz artist's you know don't get a little heavy at times. This cd is great it has a new flavor that some jazz gutiar are scared to venture into. Plus i don't think that GUy Eckstine would just dis the memory of the Great late ART PORTER; by slapping him on a cd that was terrible. Only real jazz fans will appreciate what this album is all about.
Rocking oldies like the Flippers.......1999-09-27
Seemed to be a citate of rocking oldies like The Flippers - nothing smooth at all
Is Evan Returning to Rock?.......1998-06-30
I loved Evan's first CD. Smooth jazz with a great guitar sound. This CD has too many rock riffs, it sounds like he's the lead for some very poor heavy metal band. A couple of good tunes, but to me, he's heading in the wrong direction....

Customer Reviews:
my favorite classical CD.......2004-07-25
I love this fine selection of Puccini's best loved arias. The peroformances are all great especially Felicia Weathers as Madam Butterfly. I play this CD a lot and have never tired of it.
A very nice sample.......2000-02-14
This is a very nice sample of Puccini's music. The songs selected for this CD provide a good overview of Puccini's best known works and the performances are first rate. It is a great place to start if you are interested in exploring Puccini's operas.
This music stirs my soul........1999-04-19
I play it all the time in my antique shop and my customers never fail to ask me about it.
