Ska music has been deeply ingrained in the punk rock culture since the Clash adopted their rude boy stance near the end of the British punk invasion and the 2-Tone label put ska on the map. Suddenly, punks stopped kicking the crap out of each other long enough to dance. The debut release by Orange County, California's Sublime is a positively infectious record that marries varied styles of dub, reggae, rap, sampling, scratching, and badass dancehall ska with old-school punk overtones. Musicianship on this record is exceptionally tight, featuring Brad Nowell's innovative guitar work and bright, soulful voice. Packed with 40 oz. of rock (21 tracks) including the ultimate pot-smoking anthem "Smoke Two Joints" and the novelty hit "Date Rape." --Gail Worley

5 out of 5 stars If I had to take but one CD to an island..........2007-06-12

This would be the CD. Not only does it rock, but it just makes you want to go to the beach and chill. My favorite tracks are "Waiting For My Ruca", "40 oz. To Freedom" and "We're Only Gonna Die For Our Arrogance" (Bad Religion cover).

Sublime was one of the greatest bands of the ninties, if not the greatest ska band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Truly fantastic, timeless music.......2007-05-19

What an album!! An awesome debut from an explosive (and extremely short lived) band. This album stands the test of time. Regardless what time of the year it is when this cd comes to play my mood is instantly lifted. One of those rare albums where you don't pick and choose songs. You listen from front to back each time.

The variety of music from all out punk, to ska/reggae is fun and all are technically good. Bud and Eric keep the beat going and Brad (RIP!) comes through with some tasty riffs. When I purchased this album I was in grammar school and Sublime was just starting to get on the air. This is my benchmark album to this day. Honestly, I am huge fan of all their work and the self titled album is great. This album however just has soul. No other way to describe it. Be it cruising in my car or kicking back a couple of beers with my friends this album is often played and warmly receipted by everyone.

For anyone who does not own it or is on the fence; worry not. This album is great. I would go through my personal favorites on the album but, I think at some point and time nearly every song was my number one. Now over a decade later the songs I loved are still awesome and the songs I liked I love.

A must buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Talk about music.......2007-04-11

I can't ________ believe I waited so long to get this. I have liked Sublime, heard plenty of their songs, hits, and Date Rape, Smoke Two Joints and 40 Oz. To Freedom from this album. But these other songs are just as good. And I will admit, the lesser songs are actually better than thoss three songs (besides Date Rape).

Yeah, this is ________ music, and that's all. It has a lot for an album. Soul, rebellion, funkiness, rythem, alot. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard in a long time. Not as much as Bloodhound Gang, but this actually _________ exceeded my epectations (Cake failed bigtime).

There is not a bad song on this album, just a couple average songs and a crappy song. THe last track is kind of weak, New Trash more like noise (good thing it's only a minute long), and the Hope cover is _______ compared to the great song from The Descendants. Everything else gets two thumbs up.

OF course though, the musicans are what makes this band _______ awesome. Bud Gaugh's drumming plays second to Bradley Nowell in the music. Bradely Nowell is self explainitory, and his voice is awesome. He can actually sing. Eric has got to be one of the msot underrated bassist yet. Listen to his bass guitar on Date Rape.

If you don't have this album, check it out now. I just discovered it and I can't stop listening to it. Sorry, no new Bloodhound Gang either.

ANd cool cover.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven with hints at what's to come.......2007-04-02

A fun, but uneven album. I hear hints of the great work to come on the self-titled album. Ruby Begonias is probably my highlight here. I really admire what Bradley could do when he was on his game, but I find things a little too rough for my tastes on most of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect CD.......2007-01-23

40 Oz. To Freedom is deftinely perfect. This is the best CD I own and I play it all the time. I am gonna keep it short here because I don't feel like typing a big reviw, but this is just amazing. Kicks off with the low Waiting For My Ruca which is abosulely great and dosen't slack off with hit songs like 40 Oz. To Freedom and Smoke Two Joints following up. Sublime just puts out amazing track after amazing track with songs like Don't Push, Date Rape, Scarlet Begonias, D.J.s, and Right Back just to name a few. Recomnedded to anyone.

Lions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gamboling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering (an even more detailed, expanded version was also released simultaneously as a deluxe box) that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E. Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discreet songs and multi-themed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomized in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence." If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of The Wizard of Oz relives the film just as vividly. "Over the Rainbow" is here, of course, precisely where it should be in the sequence, as as timelessly luminous and wistful as ever. --Sam Sutherland

1 out of 5 stars Don't give this as a present even to the wicked witch of the west.......2007-03-11

This CD soundtrack of the music from the film the Wizard of OZ is poorly produced. Sound quality is poor. Songs run into each other.

5 out of 5 stars wizard of oz: selections from the original motion picture sountrack.......2006-03-17

The CD came promptly. My grandchildren, children and I had a great time listening to it without watching the DVD and going through all of the scenes. We are very happy with our purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating, just like the movie.......2006-02-03

It is true that CDs created from antquated recording equipment show their age. This one is no exception, but the sound to me is still quite good and it is surprising that the production turned out so well.

I'm sure this has been said already, but if you enjoy the movie the soundtrack is fun to have. My children are entertained by it in the car and I appreciate the imagination it inspires in comparison to watching a movie.

The melodies of Judy Garland are as captivating today as they ever have been. "Over the Rainbow" is a timeless classic I never grow tired of.

Don't be fooled by negative reviews of the sounds quality. The sound is as good as it can be and to my ears, excellent!

Recommended to all Wizard of Oz fans.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Over the Rainbow.......2005-09-08

This version of The Wizard of Oz proves three things: 1) MGM may well have been the Tiffany's of movie studios back in the 30's, but their sound department was pretty primitive; 2) Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg were a stupendous team and Herbert Stothart (MGM's music director) was a darned good arranger; 3) Judy Garland was a miracle.

Hiss, scratches, pops and limited sonic range notwithstanding, you can't beat this recording to provide the essence of the movie. Judy and her fellow cast members (especially Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley) are just wonderful.

The album notes don't point it out, but there's an interesting "extra" performer on many tracks: Buddy Ebsen. Ebsen was cast as the Tin Man (without a heart), and worked for about a week on the film before becoming desperately ill as a result of the toxic aluminum powder that was ground into his makeup. When it was clear that Ebsen wasn't going to recover quickly, he was replaced by Haley. (The makeup formula was replaced, too!) But Ebsen's voice, which had been pre-recorded for performance playback, appears on a number of tracks on this recording.

4 out of 5 stars The Memories of the Wizard of Oz!.......2005-08-05

This CD brings back great memories for me. Just listening to it I can visualize the scenes from the movie. Plus it has one of Judy Garland most memorable songs, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

5 out of 5 stars Offbeat enough to be worth your time........2007-06-02

This adaption of a famous Broadway play is a truly funky story with overtones of science fiction and some of the greatest music ever performed on screen. I never get tired of the soundtrack and play it often.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2007-02-04

This album contains must of the song fron 1986 movie. This movie is great the music is fantastic. Unlike the on the movie the song are all unabriged on the track. The final song one the second version of the movie mean green mother from outer space for reason I don't understand was abriged for the movie. The songs running time was drasticaly cut from about 4.5 minutes on the album to about a little over 2 minutes. This originally was not the final song for the movie. When this movie was original first the last song was Don't Feed the Plants from the off brodway play. However six months after the movie was first released the whole ending sequence of the movie with Rick Morransis, Ellen Greeen. Levi Stubs and Jim Bilusie had to be shot over again due to negative audience reactions from several people who were upset and not stastified with director Frank Ozze's original first ending. As a result of the ending being modified from a sad depressing ending to a lovely romantic happy ending the song Don't feed the plants and the footage that went along with it were instantly trimed out of footage and only a small fragmet of it exist on the dealete scenes and out take portions of the dvd. However for reason I could never figure out don't feed the plants is include as the final song one the last track of the album even though it no longer exist in the current dvd and vhs formats of the movie

4 out of 5 stars Little Shop At Its Musical Best.......2006-09-21

The film recording of Little Shop is the best recording of the score yet (despite missing many of the stage version's more superflous and campy ditties)The vocal arangements and orchestrations are the best and most appropriately complementary to the piece. They capture the sound, and spirit in full and with fun and excitement. The cast is superb, and Ellen Greene proved herself quite brilliant in her ability to adapt her stage performance for the small size of film. The performance of Levi Stubbs, criticized on this site, is actually the BEST interpretation and vocal performance of Audrey II to date, anywhere. It is the only performance to truly bring the role to life and is damn funny. The cuts and changes are all logical for the medium of film, and obviously approved of as they were made by Howard Ashman himself. The original off-broadway cast (yes, the show was NOT an official broadway show, therefore could not have won a tony for anyone) is the next best recording. But to those who harp on the film for cutting the stage songs, the original cast album is not the full score, and has cuts made as well. The New Broadway Cast recording, which had great potential and money behind it, is the full stage score. Yet the worst in orchestration, quality, and casting to date. Though bland enough to easily digest, it is no where close to the film's sound and energy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2006-07-25

Nice adaptation of the show to the screen. Rick Moranis in the best part of his career. And having Ellen Greene preserved on film as Audrey is wonderful. One of the best musical comedy performances of the 80's. Too bad the original was an Off-Broadway production. She deserved a Tony.

5 out of 5 stars Little Shop of Horrors -The Moview CD.......2006-02-18

If you are a fan of the movie, then you will really enjoy this CD. It revives the memory of the movie in every song that is played. First rate soundtrack.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Amazon.com essential recording

Lions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gamboling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discrete songs and multithemed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomized in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence." If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of The Wizard of Oz relives the film just as vividly. "Over the Rainbow" is presented here with multiple alternate takes, making it a must for fans of Judy Garland. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Lions, and Tigers, and Bears...OH MY, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SET!.......2007-06-15

This is IT, folks! The ULTIMATE Wizard of OZ (aka, WOO) soundtrack/score album!

Man, this is just Beautiful, believe me! What's amazing to me is how a man of 60 years (almost) has this bank in his brain for so many elements from this absolutely magnificent film. (How the Hell could Gone With the Wind have even been considered as "Best Picture" against this Timeless Classic? I think the intervening years have proven the "MPA" very wrong on this one. There is no way that this picture, and it's most wonderful musical soundtrack/score do not go to the top of the "Best Movies of All Time" list. Right up there right behind "Citizen Kane", which would make it #2, I believe.

The folks at Rhino Records have taken this material and have lovingly and carefully cleaned it all up, and remastered it with the utmost care, and then, they have created a truly beautiful, deluxe package to "keep" it in! Those of us who treasure all things "OZ", especially from the movie, will find themselves thinking "I wish I'd bought this before!" You will be so pleased when you hear things that have never been released before from the score on records, LP's, previous CD's, etc. Truly a Priceless Album that you will delight in and treasure. What a treat when one is having a "bad day" to pop this into their player and be transported to the wonderful land of "Oz" for an hour and a half.....the best stress reliever I know! Order yourself a copy of this beautifully packaged and presented set, and ENJOY! ~operabruin

5 out of 5 stars The DEFINITIVE presentation of the music of Oz on CD........2006-05-26

It's been nearly 11 years since Rhino Movie Music and TCM Music teamed up to bring two editions of the awesome soundtrack from this movie to the public. One edition is a single-disc version and only contains the songs and a few bits of score. (However, it contained ALL of the songs, including outtakes and extended versions.) This is often found for around $10 and is a great buy for the casual fan or one who rarely shops online and can't find the 2-disc in a store. Although I feel more could have been included on it, it's a nice little package, especially for the kids.

However, Rhino and TCM also released a deluxe 2-CD edition featuring ALL of the music recorded and some great supplemental material as well. This deluxe version comes in a long box with the two discs, a tracklisting and short paragraph on what's inside on the back, and a special book that not only explains the music, making of the film, and the stories behind those who created it, but also contains pages for the tracklisting that includes the vocalists on the tracks and even dates of recording. One chapter even offers an annotated film guide, with notes on where the tracks on the CD appear in the film, as well as details on the deleted/extended materials presented here. Also included is a plethora of photos sprinkled all through the book.

These two discs contain a total of 82 (!) tracks, 59 of which are the songs and score. Almost immediately, you're treated to extended pieces of score as well as score that was entirely deleted. In addition, some of the songs we all know and love contain additional material, such as the Scarecrow's deleted dance from If I Only Had A Brain. There are even three deleted songs presented on this set: The Jitterbug, a reprise of Over The Rainbow, and Ding-Dong! Emerald City/The Trimuphal Return To Emerald City. The fact that all this material has been completely preserved and is made available to the public is to be commended.

If you think the songs and score will be all you get on these CDs, you're wrong. Starting with Disc 2, Track 14, you're treated to 23 demos, alternate/partial takes, alternate versions, orchestral angles, and other rarely heard materials such as a partial take of Over The Rainbow where Judy Garland messes up, a take of Over The Rainbow that doesn't make it to the final film, a demo of the deleted Jitterbug number, and even an alternate version of the end credits music.

The sound, for the most part, is absolutely amazing and clear. Some tracks have a minimal amount of tape hiss. Enough that you notice it, but not enough to detract from the listening experience. Also, it sounds as if some of the sources were slightly deteriorated, as on some of the instrumental tracks, there's a considerable amount of warp. However, for audio that at the time was over 55 years old, this soundtrack is amazingly clear and crisp and vibrant-sounding.

Rhino and TCM are to be commended for their beautiful treatment of the music from greatest family film of all time on CD. If you're a casual fan, don't care about anything but the songs and most important score pieces, or just don't want to pay this much, the single-disc CD soundtrack is an excellent package. However, if you're a hardcore fan of the film such as myself, you definitely want to spend the extra cash and pick up this lovingly created box set. Just to have the complete score alone is worth the price, but in addition, the supplemental audio materials and the excellent box and beautiful packaging make it all worth every penny. I plan to sell my single-disc soundtrack ASAP, as I no longer need it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome OZ!.......2005-08-08

Hello OZ fans. This is truly the best Wizard Of OZ soundtrack to date in my opinion. In October of '05 Warner Bros is releasing this classic film again on DVD. I was wondering if anybody knows if they will release another soundtrack to accompany the re-release DVD? Either way, I doubt it could compare to this excellent deluxe edition. See ya, over the rainbow!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Peter Allen was an Australian gay man who was once married to Liza Minnelli and was still officially in the closet when he died of AIDS in 1992. It's obvious that when it comes to sheer drama, Allen's life is pretty hard to beat, and Hugh Jackman's portrayal in this bio-show terrifically brings home the music man's energy and inner contradictions. Too bad his life's intensity wasn't reflected in Allen's milquetoast songs, which are generously sprinkled throughout the show. Technically, Jackman's not the best singer (Brian Stokes Mitchell continues to rule Broadway in that regard), but his charisma is undeniable. His take on "I Go to Rio" is appropriately high octane, for instance, while "I Still Call Australia Home" (Oz's unofficial anthem) is rather poignant. As Judy and Liza, respectively, Isabel Keating and Stephanie J. Block try hard to emulate their models' vocal styles, which can be really distracting. Overall, though, this album is mostly for serious fans of either Allen and Jackman. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars The Boy From Oz-Original cast CD.......2007-05-14

I love the music from this show and the CD is fantastic. Hugh Jackson is great in this musical and I am just sorry that I didn't have enough sense to go see it when it was on Broadway.

5 out of 5 stars An exellent recording with great cast.......2007-02-22

I am very pleased with this CD: I wanted to hear the full score of 'The Boy from Oz' as I wanted to have an idea of Hugh Jackman's singing, and I was not disappointed. I loved the music, and the structure of the musical, and Mr Jackman's performance, which is exeptional. This CD is especially great as there is no video recording of the show and the original Broadway cast recording is the only chance to get impressions of this great musical.

5 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2007-01-10

I loved the CD but was confused because I misunderstood my choice. I thought I had ordered a DVD. I would love to have the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of catchy tunes!.......2006-08-12

I admit to knowing nothing of Peter Allen. I purchased this CD because I'm an admirer of Hugh Jackman and had seen the "Oklahoma!" DVD (also available here at Amazon, and the best production of "Oklahoma!" I have ever seen). I was impressed with the nice liner notes and the fact that they include a synopsis of the plot so you can follow along and know what is going on with each song. Also, all the song lyrics are included as well as some photos from the stage production. Jackman is in excellent voice for this and the female leads who play Judy Garland and Liza Minelli are also fine singers. Whether you enjoy Peter Allen or not, you will enjoy this CD.

I would give it 5 stars except that the overall volume level is a bit low in comparison with other CDs, but all you need do is crank your stereo a bit, then it's great.

3 out of 5 stars Dazzling Performances.......2006-07-25

While clearly, this is not the greatest of musicals and it doesn't pretend to be, it is an oppurtunity to hear several incredible, powerhouse performances. Yes, Hugh Jackman is amazing as Peter Allen, without trying to copy him at all. But, the other performers keep up with him. Isabell Keating is unbelievable as Judy Garland. She DOES copy Garland, in singing, mannerisms and looks and she is wonderful. Jarod Emmick, as always, is fantastic. One of the best voices on Broadway.
The entire score is Peter Allen's and Jackman makes the most of every song. A great CD for Allen, Jackman or musical theater fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Flying Dutchman .......2006-09-02

A ndres DVDs get better, an excellent show in wonderful surroundings, I have his latest.

3 out of 5 stars Content Excellent but marred by poor video........2006-04-18

I was dissapointed in this video from the viewpoint of very poor video quality. Barely on a par with VHS. I have a 480P front projector with an 80" diagonal picture and it was unwatchable on that system I had to view it on my 36" tv to have an acceptable picture and even then it was not great. I have several Andre Rieu videos and have never run into that before. According to other reviews Denon has put out a very poor product this time.

The show itself is terrific as Andre always is.

5 out of 5 stars The Flying Dutchman.......2006-04-06

Excellent CD to listen to and relax, to listen while I'm working, and at any time of the day. Andre Rieu is good music!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Performance.......2006-03-03

Andre's Flying Dutchman was a delight to watch. Filmed in Limberg, this concert is beautifully pieced together with a lovely array of music. The voices of his beautiful soloists add to the atmosphere of this wonderful concert. Something I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars This is the only way to hear the songs in stereo!.......2005-03-18

The "Story And Songs Of The Wizard Of Oz" CD album is the ONLY version of the soundtrack album to feature the songs in their new stereo re-mixes- they were re-mixed into stereo in 1998 by Warner Bros for the film's theatrical re-release. All other soundtrack albums/collections feature the songs in their original mono form.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT CD!.......2002-07-08

This is the best Wizard of Oz CD that I have ever heard. It is true stereo sound and has wonderful dialogue along with all of the songs in the movie. It was amazing when I was listening to it through my headphones. I had a really great time listening to it. I am the biggest Wizard of Oz fan of all time and if you like the movie than you will love this CD. I encourgage everyone to purchase this CD. It was a wonderful pop-up picture of all four main characters in front of Emerald City. It defies all other Wizard of Oz soundtracks!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the lot.......2002-05-24

Unlike the other soundtracks, this is far more enjoyable in that it not only provides songs from the movie but numerous dialogs.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Wizard of Oz fans.......2002-02-20

This amazing soundtrack accomplishes something I don't think I've seen on any other soundtrack album; that is, mixing the entire musical soundtrack with the dialog of the film. In all the years I have enjoyed watched The Wizard of Oz, I never before owned a soundtrack recording. This was a great addition to my collection, in that I can enjoy the music and the dialog in my cd player. I believe this CD is essential for all fans of the film.

5 out of 5 stars After 20+ Years It Still Rocks.......2006-01-20

I have several of his albums and in my opinion, this is his his best. It is rock music with thoughtful (if not "deep"), and sexy lyrics. At the time, he had two commercially successful albums under his belt, but was ridiculed by the music establishment as being a "bubble gum" artist. Living In Oz was his effort to quiet his critics and prove to the world that he could play serious music, not just pop hits. I think he more than accomplished his goal. As a young adult I listened to Rush, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Cars, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, etc. I was a rocker. But to this day I love this guy! 23 years later, I can still crank this album up and enjoy every song. I've seen Rick Springfield twice in concert. Once in Denver at Red Rocks back in the early 80's and once at the House of Blues in Orlando in the early 2000's. Both were awesome experiences. I'd go again in minute to see him, and I'd advise anyone who likes 80's rock music to buy this CD. It's a lot of fun.

4 out of 5 stars "Caught Between a Hard, Hard Place and a Rock".......2004-09-08

When Living in Oz was released in 1983, gone were Rick Springfield's bubblegum, teeny bopper days of "Jessie's Girl," "Don't Talk to Strangers" and, the worst of the lot, "How Do You Talk To Girls" (ugh). On this album, Rick shows that he knew how to do plenty of things to girls and that he knew how to write interesting and kickin' rock songs. Two of the singles demonstrates the maturity in Springfield's songwriting in terms of music and lyrical content. The synthesizers in "Human Touch" and "Affair of the Heart" bring depth to the music. Yes, it sounds very 1980s but, if you like that sound like I do, this is an album for you. The third single "Souls" and the title track really rock. In fact, I can see hard rock/heavy metal fans liking a lot that is on this album. The evil voice hissing "I'll touch you and squeeze you and make you miiiine" blew me away the first time I heard it (THIS is Rick Springfield?). "Like Father, Like Son" is an interesting track with an orchestra.

Lyrically, this album definitely geared itself towards a more mature audience. Most of the songs are about sexuality (the "hard place" indeed). If there was any cover photo of Ron the "working class" dog that followed the theme of this album it would not be appropriate for young eyes. Rick thoroughly explores the art of having affairs. In the case of "Alyson," the subject of the song is an actor filming steamy love scenes (no doubt, on a soap opera) in front of the husband of the co-star with whom he's having an affair. "Affair of the Heart" was surprisingly graphic for a pop star with a young audience: "You shudder and shake, sink your teeth in my skin." "Motel Eyes" moves into another sexual topic: "Though there was something wicked about the way she flexed her thighs" and another nice line, "She started saying something about movement versus size." "Like Father, Like Son" is a strange yet interesting song about a man traumatized by his heavy-handed religious upbringing. If you only know the "Jessie's Girl" Rick Springfield, I recommend checking out Living in Oz. It will change your perspective on the former teen heartthrob.

5 out of 5 stars Go on Rick! Get your rock on!.......2004-08-03

Nobody believed Rick could be heavy, yet sound so good. An absolute bombastic, energetic, fun album. Rick's finest work. Songs that make you wanna groove and bang your head at the same time. This is a cd that when you hear songs such as "Souls," "Motel Eyes," or "Affair Of The Heart," you'll wish the volume control went pass MAX.

5 out of 5 stars Love to relive it !!.......2004-06-13

The only album I have ever owned where I've enjoyed every single track! And I never get tired of listening to any of them.

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly superb recording.......2004-01-08

Back in 1983 when this recording was released I was fresh out of high school and a friend talked me into going to a RS concert in Louisville because it would be full of girls. While we guys were certainly the minority, what I experienced was nothing less than one of the top five live performances I've ever seen. This man is a master entertainer and this album (showing my age :-) was the one that proved he was more than a pretty face (in fact, he was a musician long before taking up acting to pay the bills).

Living in Oz displays a maturity in songwriting as well as subject material that makes this recording a good one to listen to in private with headphones.

This is definitely a two thumbs up!
