Jesse Winchester
Editorial Reviews

Jesse Winchester is a wry man with a stern streak. "Black dog don't believe in sin," he sings on "Black Dog," one of the remarkable songs on his 1971 debut album. "Think of where the black dog's been, think of where he's been today." Winchester grew up in Memphis but moved to Canada to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War. His first album was produced by Robbie Robertson of the Band, and engineered by Todd Rundgren (who produced part of his second LP). Even before Robertson added his guitar (and Levon Helm's drums) to the instrumental mix, Winchester's songs possessed an antique charm not unlike the songs of the Band. The jangly rock of "Quiet About It" and "Snow" could've been cut in the basement of Big Pink, while "The Brand New Tennessee Waltz" sounds like an old song of the south. The oft-covered "Yankee Lady" possesses similarly nostalgic charms. Songs like these are why, in recent years, Winchester has found his greatest success writing songs for others to sing. --John Milward

Jesse Winchester has made such a good living writing songs for the likes of Wynonna Judd, Emmylou Harris, and Reba McEntire that he doesn't really have to make his own albums. In fact, the revealingly titled Gentleman of Leisure is only his second album in 18 years. It was worth the wait, for it sounds like one of Lyle Lovett's late-1990s albums. There's the same dry, wry voice; the same weird mix of '40s swing, '60s R&B, and '70s progressive country; and the same conversational lyrics that seem casual at first but contain memorable aphorisms. Lovett's Texas sensibility is replaced, though, by Winchester's Memphis roots, which are reinforced by Steve Cropper's presence on songs about Elvis and a favorite soul-music club. Producer Jerry Douglas has also called in bluegrass guitar whiz Bryan Sutton, blues-guitar virtuoso Mike Henderson, country star Vince Gill, and gospel's Fairfield Four. Winchester's songwriting is the star attraction, though, thanks to music that marries hillbilly tunefulness to swampy Delta grooves and Zen lyrics that explore how love can strip us of pride and power and still make us strong. --Geoffrey Himes

on "Worth it for 2 songs alone".......2006-10-14
He's right about the two songs: 'That's What Makes You Strong' and 'No Pride At All' will move you in mysterious ways - if you don't buy the album at least buy those two tracks. This man has unusual wisdom and wonderful songwriting ability. I was a huge fan of his first two albums 30 years ago - I am glad that his is still capable of great music. Yes, there are a few lightweight ditties on it, but overall it is so much better than most of what's out there... (therefore 5 stars). And his lead guitarist is Steve Cropper(!) Oh - how could I forget - 'Wander My Way Home' is the only song by a white guy on my person best Gospel mix - it is wonderful (with the Fairfield Four). There is a LOT to like here.
Worth it for 2 songs alone.......2006-03-15
There are two songs on this album that are great: "No Pride at All" and "That's What Makes You Strong". The combination of powerful emotion with songwriting craft at its highest level result in stunning songs. I played "No Pride at All" for a friend of mine, a guy with a heavy metal background. (The song is very mellow instrumentally). It totally caught him off-guard; he literally broke down in tears. The next time he came over he said, "I want to hear my song". I put in on and left him alone in the living room.
"No Pride at All" is also very mellow instrumentally, but absolutely devastating emotionally. And "devastating" is the only word I can use to describe it.
The other songs vary from above average to good, but the presence of these two songs makes the album a must-buy, in my opinion.

Superb.......2006-02-26
This is one of the best albums ever recorded in America. Every song is a masterpiece. A must!
Definitely worth the wait.......2005-08-07
I can't say much more than what's already been said. "Gentleman of Leisure" is the epitome of cool, with some of the sweetest ballads to ever come out of my speakers. Do all your friends a favor and turn them on to this.
Beautiful.......2001-06-17
This recording is just a wonder. I have owned this cd for about a year, and I cannot get enough of it--and it is rare nowadays for a record to have such an impact on me. I have bought it for at least three other friends and family members already. Take a listen, and you won't be able to stop either.

Missing some of the best..........2006-01-18
Sometimes you wonder just who programs these things, even at Rhino. I've been a fan since "Yankee Lady", but the second most haunting and beautiful thing he ever did was on Learn to Love It in the the song "L'Air de Louisianne" (sorry, my spelling). Now, where is that on this disk?
Anyway, without it, only four stars.

The Best Of?.......2005-03-09
Well, it's not far short of a 'Best Of', if song selection is the sole criterion. But if soul criterion is the basis, then I'd pump for,'Live at the Mountain Stage', as per my remarks listed there. The soul of this very soulful individual is all the more remarkable without studio embellishments. And, as stated before, I'm a sucker for that old, eery 'Black Dog'song from the first Winchester album and would have included it on this anthology. Nevertheless, this gets a lot of airtime at our home, as my 17 year old, who grew up on a solid diet of Jesse's lullabyes from cradle times, can't seem to do without it for over long. 'Biloxi' was the first thing I played her on guitar. 'Do It','Defying Gravity', 'Do La Lay','Skip Rope Song', this guy's repetoir should be as embedded in the musical consciousness of America as Stephen Foster.

I ordered this c.d. recently after istening to Jesse for over 20 years, and you won't be disappointed! Jesse is the most unique singer/songwriter I have ever known, and his songs, both lyrically and musically, will stay with you! Buy ALL of his c.d.'s - you will find really special music on each.
This son of a gun (sorry, couldn't help it) is great!.......2001-04-23
Okay folk/country/rock fans, let's try a blindfold test on our friends. Play them "Tell Me Why You Like Roosevelt", and have them guess who the singer is. Most of my victims guess Lyle Lovett, and they don't believe they're wrong until I show them this CD. That only goes to prove that Lyle Lovett had discerning taste when he was younger and that Tennessee born Jesse Winchester was a highly influential presence in the wings of the 70's music scene. He's most familiar to listeners via the many cover versions of his songs like 'Biloxi', Rhumba Man',and 'Brand New Tennessee Waltz"'all done while he was enjoying Canadian hospitality as a result of a disagreement with the draft board in the late 60's and early 70's.The inability to tour the U.S. during this period cost him many potential fans and helps to explain his near anonymity today. This CD is a great way to catch up with this gifted singer songwriter. Any transplanted southerner can easily become homesick hearing "Mississippi You're On My Mind', or "Yankee Lady", I know I'm prone to fits of melancholia listening to them. But he's witty, and not without a sense of down home humor too, so the total package works out fine. If you like this sampler then you'll want to go into his available back catalogue for more hidden delights. He's touring again too and puts on a great live show. Just ask Lyle Lovett next time you see him.

Available Again!!.......2006-11-01
How do I get your attention - those who don't know Jesse Winchester? Because you should, and this might be his best album. For me, his first two albums are among the handful that endure from the late 60s, early 70s - it is a short list: The first 2 albums by The Band; There Goes Rhymin' Simon by Paul Simon; Stevie Wonder's first two albums; Randy Newman's Good Ol' Boys; Moondance by Van Morrison... and Jesse Winchester's first two albums.
He writes wonderfully listenable music AND many of his songs have the most heartful, wise lyrics you will hear anywhere. Robbie Robertson produced and played guitar on the first record, and Amos Garrett played on the second - He attracted good musicians. (btw, there are some wonderful tracks on his more recent Gentleman of Liesure, too)
Angry at Wounded Bird.......2006-06-27
An incredible album, in my opinion his best. Fantastic songs written by one of the best craftsman in the business, with a haunting voice mesmerizing to listen to. Unfortunately, the company reissuing this and other Winchester albums, Wounded Bird Records, did a horrible job of remastering this one. It sounds underwater, and the top end is distorting and splattering, like they ran it through something that didn't have enough headroom. The CD deserves 5 stars for Winchester's part, and 1 for Wounded Bird's part, which is why I gave it only 3. I've emailed Jesse about it and he says: "I'm afraid I have no control and no influence over the companies who release those records. I was not consulted or even informed by Wounded Bird. I haven't the money for a law suit....I'm very sorry about this. I wish there were something concrete I could do, but due to my own naivite as a young man and the unscruplous people I was doing business with, I have no artistic or financial control whatever over those recordings. We live and learn."
Depth of Feeling.......2006-06-14
The Band backs up Winchester on his first release. (That alone is enough to earn at least one listen.) The breadth and depth of emotion on this work is broader and deeper than on his others. The music and lyrics can be haunting, dark, and unsettling on "Black Dog". And "Quiet About it": "I have this notion--call it my fear--that I will die alone--and even He won't be there".
He balances this with the joy of a working man's night-on-the- town, "Pay Day": "You make me feel like dancing the night a away!" or the sensual and upbeat "Touch I Like", "The air of flowers when you're near, your eyes are bright and wide and clear, and that's the touch I like".
This could be his best work. Certainly, Winchester has a knack for penning lyrics and combining them with a musical ability that keeps me hopin' for more.

Nothing But A Breeze.......2006-07-17
I've been a Jesse Winchester fan ever since I saw his face on a billboard on Sunset Boulevard andvertising his first album in 1971. I bought that one and bought all the subsequent records. This one is one of the best. Two songs in particular are wonderful: "You Remember Me" with the sweet voice of Anne Murray in the background and "Seems Like It Was Only Yesterday" with its rollicking beat and great humor. Winchester is a grand song writer and I'm glad to see Nothing But A Breeze out on CD.
Jesse Winchester.......2006-07-04
This artist is terrific. I have bought his albums since the 70's. Recently got this album on audio CD. If you want to get into this artist, *Nothing But a Breeze* is the way to start. My wife is bonkers over it. I have had to rip and burn this CD so she can have it on her pc site, in the car, and anywhere else she decides to crank it up. Emotional tears flow from her every time she listens to it. Backed by Ricky Skaggs, James Burton, Emmylou Harris, Anne Murray, and the late Nicolette Larson....WOW.
"Life is too short for some folks, for others it just drags on...but me I want to live with my feet in Dixie and my head in the cool cool north...it ain't nothing but a breeze."
Fresh Air Rolling In.......2006-06-13
I am biased when it comes to Jesse Winchester. I bought his first album years ago and I probably own a majority of his recordings. The guy has a great capacity for feeling and is adept at writing songs. He's admitted that he wasn't doing much original in his music (not his lyrics, mind you)--but he was being too self-effacing when he made this comment. If you want someone who can get your feet to tapping, give you insight and inspiration--Jesse's your man. "Life is too short for some folks, for others it just drags on...but me I want to live with my feet in Dixie and my head in the cool cool north...it ain't nothing but a breeze." Take a chance on this songwriter. He's a breath of fresh air!

a classic.......2007-05-16
One of the great singer-songwriter albums, with a much cleaner sound than on JW's debut (produced by Robbie Robertson) and a determined, against-the-odds optimism (as the title suggests). Some of the lyrics go over the edge into cute (the business about tickling the world's belly button), but not many. Jesse's voice is lovely. Note that Amazon's song list here leaves off the concluding song, All of Your Stories, which is definitely one of JW's most beautiful. And that's saying a lot.
Haunting Lyrics.......2006-10-01
The first five songs here have some of the most haunting and simple and spirited lyrics written. Music has great melodies, but the lyrics are special. First got this one in 1972. "if the wheel is fixed, I will still take the chance... when you're skating on thin ice, then you might as well dance."

This modest live album offers a rare glimpse of a truly great Southern singer-songwriter, but it may frustrate fans as much as it intrigues listeners unfamiliar with his work. At his best, Jesse Winchester weaves gospel, folk, blues, and country threads into graceful, intelligent music that reflects his origins in Louisiana, rural Mississippi, and Memphis. He sings in a honeyed drawl about affairs of the heart, small moments of deep feeling, and mysteries of the spirit with a rare balance of clarity and gravity. This set captures Winchester accompanied only by his spare gut-string acoustic guitar, a setting that emphasizes song craft but eclipses his skill at solid ensemble arrangements. The repertoire favors Winchester's more recent output while overlooking or underselling his earlier songs, thus reducing exquisite signatures like "Brand-New Tennessee Waltz" and "Yankee Lady" to pale echoes of their original power and depicting their author as a folk poet instead of the versatile musician his past albums and infrequent tours have revealed. --Sam Sutherland

Purity Of Vision.......2005-06-23
What is it about Jesse Wincheaster's impeccable charm that is so infectious, so uplifting? The simplicity of the writing and the purity of his diction mask a remarkably deft and economic touch which elevates the subtle shifts of desire and loss in relationship to the level of hymn. That's a special reason for supporting his live recording as the voice in this concert is as free to do its work as it is ever likely to be on CD. It vividly recalls the small houses he played to at the Troubadour, Melbourne during the 70s. Though I like some of the brooding work of his early years, such as,'Black Dog', that appears to be buried. The show features some of his classics. Though I doubt his repetoir could fatigue, there are few songs from the 70s when he forged an audience. Importantly, the set concludes with one of them,'Yankee Lady',which serves 30 years on as a double tribute to the Southern roots which have informed his career. Remarkably, in interview some years ago, he admitted to not liking the sound of his recorded voice. While that characteristic self-depreciation often stalks the narrator of his songs, its an opinion few people would share. Certainly not Bob Dylan, who Jesse recalled in that interview as having once met and congratulated him on,'Yankee Lady' and somewhat whelmed over, he replied that he admired Bob's 'Sad Eyed Lady'. There you go.
Like Having Him Play in Your Home.......2004-03-12
I've seen Jesse play solo numerous times in small venues going back to 1975 in Montreal. This recording is just how it is. His sweet understated vocals and minimalist guitar playing just captivate and keep you focused on his every word. If you're a fan but never got to see him in a small club, buy this CD and you'll know exactly what its like. If you never heard of him, buy his studio albums first and then give this a try.
The Heart of Music.......2004-01-13
Jesse has been a part of my life since the early 70's. I bought his first album based on a story in Rolling Stone and immediately became a big fan! For all of these years I have played and sung "Brand New Tennessee Waltz", Defying Gravity and Biloxi. Inevitably when I sing them for someone who hasn't heard them before, they comment on how good the song is and ask if I wrote it. I reluctantly fess up that it is Jesse's and of course they have never heard of him. What a shame that some of the greatest artists never receive the recognition that they deserve.
This album is what music is all about. Great melodic songs and great lyrics with nothing else to get in the way. Yes, I liked his studio stuff with a band also but this just gets in your body and mind in a way that those didn't. The only negative is that it should have been a two CD recording with more of the songs from his first three albums, which I feel are his best.
Simple, understated, extremely powerful.......2003-01-11
I've been a Jesse Winchester fan since his first self-titled (vinyl) album many years ago. I've seen him live a few times. But it wasn't until Strawberry Music festival a couple of years ago that I saw him perform solo. I was curious how he would hold the audience, many of whom hadn't even heard of him. It was almost beyond understanding, how he had the entire crowd hanging on every word, laughing at the most subtle suggestion of humor. This disc re-creates that connection, a rare and magical one that few artists, in the over-produced and synthetically altered musical machine of today can understand, let alone approximate. A great gift to the musical world!

That's a special reason for supporting his live recording as the voice in this concert is as free to do its work as it is ever likely to be on CD. Though I like some of the brooding work of his early years, such as 'Black Dog', that appears to be buried.( I fantasize what Daniel Lanoise might have done with this moodiness, rather than Todd Rundgren). The show features some of his classics. Though I doubt his repetoir could fatigue, there are few songs from the 70s when he forged an audience. Importantly, the disc concludes with one of them,'Yankee Lady', which serves 30 years on as a double tribute to the southern roots which have informed his career. Remakably, in interview some years ago, he admitted to not liking the sound of his recorded voice. While that characteristic self-depreciation often stalks the narrator of his songs, its an opinion few people would share.
