5 out of 5 stars Los De Adentro 5 years later.......2004-12-10

This is a classic album from 1999 and although the production on this record sounds somewhat dated, anyone who has seen the band live knows that they are talented and passionate about the music they create, and that spirit shines through on this debut album. Their biggest hit of course is memorized by many "Una Cancion".

Had the chance to hear Elliot (guitar) and Jose (vocals, guitar) play in Miami last year and Los De Adentro fans will be happy to hear that they remain as creative and productive as ever, and it is very possible that they will be coming out with a new album with Sony Discos, to follow up on this gem.

5 out of 5 stars demencia total.......2004-10-18

5 out of 5 stars Pura Adrenalina.......2004-10-18

5 out of 5 stars Los de adentro - Rock bueno.......2004-01-02

5 out of 5 stars lo mejor.......2000-08-17

Este grupo barranquillero, aunque muchos no lo sepan, es uno de los mejores exponentes del rock-pop. Este album, tiene canciones super aunque la mayoria conozcan solo una; compra el album para que lo compruebes.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing comeback, and their best album .......2005-08-03

The quick rundown. This marks a spectacular comeback for Los De Adentro after 3 years out of the studio, and is their best album yet featuring broad influences and styles picked up during their journeys through South Beach and the swamps of the Mississippi. Featuring radio friendly tracks such as No Mas and their first single Nubes Negras, the album will find new fans particularly with the catchy rocker Eres Mi Sol, and the album closer, and one of the strongest tracks - the anthematic ballad Cada Lagrima Es Un Puente. Amazon.com doesn't sell it but individual vendors will sell it as a pricey import. I bought it from Mundovibes which had a two week turnaround from order to arrival.

    More detailed review follows:

Joe (vocals), Eliuth (guitar), Johann (keyboards)...Also known as Los De Adentro might have been quiet on the Latin radio, but the band, particularly Joe, had only been working harder. Doing shifts at Gino's Pizza while living bohemian style in South Beach, Los De Adentro gathered a new local Phish-like following in a place known more for european DJ's than rock n roll bands.

After following up their popular debut album, self-titled, with a second- more ambitious but less accessible alternative rock venture, the band was at a very important decision point, with some completely rededicating themselves to their families and new jobs, with Joe, Eliuth and Johann resigned to take some time off recording and gather new momentum in the United States.

During this time of changed scenery and new relationships, the songs and inspiration for them multiplied, and the feedback from their fans and friends immediate and positive, as they played out their ideas and old favorites at apartment complex poolsides on West Avenue, and live gigs at places like Opium. The gig at Opium, unfortunately was prematurely closed down by the police for being too loud, but no doubt hearing fans sing along with their songs, and getting jazzed up with the crowd, had Joe, Eliuth and Johann only more determined to get back in the studio.

Armed with a book of ideas, lyrics, and songs Joe and the band found a friend at the Mirador complex who had all that you need to run a studio these days - a pc, cubase sx, good soundcard and several microphones, the hardest ingredient being a room where you can play loud - and put together a 4 song CD demo in addition to recordings of over 20 promising songs and ideas. One song "Falling" was done as a continuous take with a guest drummer, and the Los Adentro bassist - much to the chagrin of everyone else in the apartment complex. In fact the demo recording was so successful that an angry music producer living 5 stories below, came up hungover and offered to record them in his studio if the band would just stop.

Soon enough, after shopping the demo around to several execs, the record deal followed, and Volver Amar came to fruition. Prior to the recording, Joe spent some time in Mississippi at the suggestion of another Sobe friend TK, to get a taste of Black Crowes-like southern rock. That trip clearly has its influences on this album as well.

Now, from album history to Track by Track comments:

    1. No Mas - A catchy pop ditty about coping with depression that could serve as the second single off the album. The level of production here while adequate, could have been juiced up with better drum effects, and a more layered guitar effect in the chorus to make it a bona fide radio hit. But all misgivings are cast aside with Eliuth's beautiful guitar solo - which serves as a musical declaration and anthem of the band's return.

    2. Tal Vez - Opens up with a nice Johann-penned keyboard intro on a Roland VK, into a relatively straightforward poprock tune, with a unique musical bridge that seems to take a step into a mellow lounge in the 70's, then kicks back into a satisfying finale.

    3. Nubes Negras - The fact this song is on a Los De Adentro album, and also the leadoff single for the album shows the kind of full circle that the band has taken spiritually and creatively. Always a favorite among their friends and family, the band had never recorded it to an album because the original bubbly lyrics - about an adolescent romance - were not appopriate for where the band wanted to go artistically. Having received heavy feedback from fans and friends during their time in the States (almost unanimously - you have to record this song), the experience away from Colombia might have been the final straw, and whatever resistance the band had, was withdrawn after reworking the lyrics into a more spiritual and introspective angle. Of note, the song had a great angry bridge before the final chorus that was cut out in the studio version - perhaps because it was unorthodox structure - but it was missed.

    4. Tu y Yo - The original demo was recorded during a typical Miami late summer afternoon, and to capture the mood and subtext of Joe's delivery, more audible rain was added to the track...while romantic in title, the song is a very passionate confessional, burdened by grief, as two lovers walk different paths. A second version recorded in the studio was a more straightforward rockpop tune, but lost the volume of sadness. The third version is in the album, and thought to be a balanced mix of the two versions. I love the Roland VK from Johann in the 2nd verse, an unforgettable bridge to final chorus.

    5. Eres Mi Sol - Wow. After 4 rather straightforward arrangements, the band shows off some of their Mississippi roots with a rocker that gets you singing along by the chorus. Joe gets into this one vocally and Eliuth is having a blast with the guitar and his pedal effects. Then, apparently feeling left out, Johann kicks in with a great piano solo- concluding with some great harmonies on vocals leading to a perfect end.

    6. Cuando me fui de este lugar - Interesting song and arrangement that's again, a new direction for the band both musically - and also lyrically it is specifically a song about leaving to new places. The closest thing to British the band has ever sounded, with traces of Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Oasis and Coldplay in this one.

    7. Sumergido - Takes the momentum of the prior track and adds a little bit of lime in the coconut, and comes up with a catchy, assured rock tune. It's something we've never heard anything like this from Los De Adentro. The band seems to comfortably sit back and really fit in with the mood and style of this song. Johann, again with a perfecty placed piano solo and Eliuth with a guitar solo to follow. Nice harmonies in the chorus. A keeper.

    8. Soledad - Nice piano chords to intro the song, and surprise - background violins as the first verse progresses to chorus. Around this time through the album, you realize that this band is far more mature and assured from their experiences abroad and time spent with friends and fans - have an artistic focus and direction - and probably should do what their former neighbor, Shakira, did - and get ready to crossover to America.

    9. Nunca me dejes ir - Takes the southern rock style of #5 and takes it one further with trumpets in the chorus. Joe seems to be love this genre, as his most passioned deliveries can be found in #5 and this track. Although this track was a little too much for me with the basic southern rock chord structure, it really fits in with the talents of the band, as Johann is free to bang out some crazy tricked out piano accompaniments and it allows the band to just let it all out energy wise as they do in concert.

    10. Recuerdos - Any song after #9 sounds out of place, but Recuerdos holds up fine. We're greeted with the same chord structure of Jack Johnson's Sitting Waiting Wishing - friendly pop-fare - but all similarities end there. Eliuth gives us a taste of U2 Edge in a solo (if Edge riffs can ever be called solos). Solid offering heading into the finale.

    11. Cada Lagrima Es Un Puente - Each tear is a bridge. Never more true than with Los De Adentro. Lovely layered vocals in the chorus, beautiful keyboard riff heading into the 2nd verse. Violins again here but less a surprise and more a part of the buildup of the song, than with Soledad #8. Arguably the best track on the album - and a fantastic way to close a hard-earned comeback by the band.

Overall - an outstanding comeback album for Los De Adentro and their best and most complete effort by far. Having heard the demos of english and spanish songs that the band has in the basement to go with in the future, the band is no doubt ready to succeed with proper label support and active touring, and hopefully this album will be the bridge that leads to a crossover in the States. Opening up for Shakira would be a great way to start. Get ready for the Colombian music wave!
