Jackie Wilson is another example of a superstar whose accomplishments are forgotten or neglected by history.An aspiring opera singer, a former boxer;he was a man who's vocal range was remarkable.He was one of the few artists that charted on both the rhythm and blues and pop charts.Jackie was so charismatic that his mere smile would have women swooning in groves.Jackie,not Teddy Pendergrast, was the one who originally hosted 'women only' concerts,to standing-room audiences!This collection lacks two important songs-"At Last" and "Danny Boy"The latter is one of the most heart-felt and vocally beautiful rendering of any song I've ever heard.The former is one of his charted pop tunes ,and showed the amazing versatility of the man. Jackie was the original "hardest working man in show business" long before James Brown claimed the title,and his boxing background enabled him to demonstrate some mind-blowing moves on stage.I hope God "lifted him higher." Jackie Wilson was a great artist, and the music on this CD is energetic and some of his best hits.

As is typical for the UK Ace label, they were ahead of the curve with this 1987 release, gathering together Wilson's essential sides, and filling out a 24-track menu (62 minutes) with well selected rarities that span Wilson's entire career. Rhino's similarly titled single-disc retrospective checks in with eight fewer cuts, and the revitalized Brunswick's 2002 collection ("20 Greatest Hits") with four less. Masters are a mix of mono (1-3, 7, 9, 11-12, 15-16) and stereo (4-6, 8, 10, 13-14, 17-24). Those who want a more extensive catalog of Wilson's career (including a look at his earliest work with Billy Ward & The Dominoes, and a deeper helping of his early '70s soul sides) should look for a copy of Rhino's out-of-print 3-CD "Mr. Excitement," but most will be perfectly satisfied by this collection. One of the best R+B singers of his generation.......2005-01-17

Jackie Wilson, whose style of music was at the R+B end of the rock'n'roll spectrum, had a long string of hits in America during the fifties and sixties but it was only in the eighties that he made any real impact in Britain (a few years after he died) following the use of one of his songs in a TV commercial.
UK fans will recognize Reet petite (a number one UK hit) and two other major UK hits, I get the sweetest feeling and Your love has lifted me higher and higher (a song that has been covered by many other singers including Dolly Parton and Rita Coolidge). All these songs had been huge American hits for Jackie in the fifties and sixties.

Among Jackie's other American hits, this collection includes Lonely teardrops, That's why I love you so, Night, To be loved, I'll be satisfied, Whispers getting louder and A woman a lover a friend.

It is amazing that Jackie made little impact in the UK during his lifetime but, helped by the Commodores' tribute song (Nightshift) and some TV commercials, he has gained a measure of posthumous recognition.

This collection provides an excellent introduction to Jackie's music including all the tracks that really matter.

I enjoy sax music, this album is excellent for listening, dancing, or background music. The sound is very good, and I would recommend it highly. The cost of the CD is well worth the money. I would be happy to pay more if it had more of the same type of tunes on the album.

Christian , or otherwise , this is still one of my favourite singers , and only Dion (di mucci) seems to be able to touch the human heart in such a poweful manner !!"Centre of my life", .."Sweet Lord Jesus", ...especially "The Truth will set you free"!, ( my all-time favourite Dion song!!!!!) ..all the soings on this c.d. are truly remarkable , and , friom a Christian perspective (which i am !) ...incredible!!!!!BUY!!!!!

excellent compilation.......2003-12-13

This a highly interesting selection from about 6 different gospel albums that Dion recorded in the 1980's. 2 of the songs,, Sweet Surrender and Truth Will Set You Free earned their way into Dion's boxed set collection of greatest hits, and You Need A Love , along with Train For Glory , probably belong in that boxed set as well. Sweet Surrender, in my opinion, is one of Dion's most memorable songs, and I rank it right up there with John Lennon's Imagine.
For those familiar with Dion's personal life, Center Of My Life takes on a special significance, and Still in the Spirit is also a first rate song. The liner notes by Little Steven of the E Street Band are yet another reminder of the musical link between Dion and Bruce Springsteen. The only reason I did not give this cd 5 stars is because "best of" compilations should not be rated on the same scale as an album of songs that were all recorded at the same time - it is an unfair comparison. But this cd is an excellent showcase of the gospel side of Dion, and can be enjoyed with or without any religious fervor.

Wonderful ... soul - stirring lyrics.......2003-09-08

It was indeed a blessing to find this compilation on CD. I had bought most of the vinyl albums from which these songs were chosen, in the 1980s. The disk has some of Dion's finest gospel tunes, but I was dissapointed that only one song from the "Only Jesus" album made it on the collection. (Of course that is a biased opinion.. since "Only Jesus" was my personal favorite album of his). The soul - stirring lyrics on this CD are indeed a treat to any Christian believer. The song .. "Sweet Surrender" is a testimonial that has a heart-felt honesty that most folks can be able to relate to. All the songs are wonderful. As I listen to the CD I am drawn to a loving warmth that the Good Lord has flooded into the songs. Dion is an enormous musical talent, and his gifts are very evident on this collection. I highly recommend it to all.

I can't stop listening!.......2003-04-03

I first heard Dion perform some of these songs on EWTN. I bought the CD to get those songs, but I got so much more! I love the laid back rhythm of "Still in the Spirit" and the driving rhythm of "He's the One." It's not just the music that's fantastic on the CD, but the lyrics are so compelling.

This CD will make you happy.

Christ Glorified.......2002-06-15

As a christian i can indentify with all of the songs of this album." Come to the cross". When this song is played i think of my own conversion and the call Jesus is still making to all mankind. I have three little girls who plays this album very often and knows most of the songs.Ages 8-11yrs. I am interested in purchasing more of the gospel albums by Dion. The album begins with "Center of my Life" and finishes with "Day of the Lord". I think that the album was well arrange because we are looking for the soon return of Christ Jesus on that day truly we shall be with him. I hope that Dion is still testifing for Jesus.

Did any of the people who rated this c.d. actually get it . Apparently not.
This is an English import of Angel Baby , the AMERICAN original version , plus the English edit , plus a 1999 remake. The rest of the c.d. are several failed follow ups to Angel Baby circa 1960-1961 and nine other songs done in
1999. Why the other reviewers didn't grasp that is hard to understand. Overall two stars for a great piece of rock history .If you are a collector
it's worth it .

THIS C.D. IS EXCELLENT. ROSIE HAMLIN, THE LEAD SINGER OF THE GROUP HAD A UNIQUE ANGELIC VOICE SIMILIAR TO THAT OF KATHY YOUNG.IT'S REALLY A SHAME THAT SHE'S ONLY REMEMBERED FOR HER #1 HIT "ANGEL BABY" , AND NOT FOR ANY OF HER OTHER RECORDINGS. (BAD MANAGEMENT PERHAPS). THIS C.D. ALSO FEATURES HER FOLLOW-UP BALLAD "LONELY BLUE NIGHTS" AND OTHER BEAUTIFUL BALLADS THAT DIDN'T GET THE AIR PLAY THEY DESERVED.HER SINGING GENRE WAS SIDE BY SIDE WITH KATHY YOUNG AND THE INNOCENTS. IN FACT SHE DOES A VERSION OF "A THOUSAND STARS", WHICH WAS A #1 FOR KATHY YOUNG. BOTH ROSIE AND KATHY HAD MASS APPEAL WITH 60'S L.A. CHICANO KIDS.IT WAS A STYLE THAT LEANED TOWARDS POP AND RTHYM AND BLUES .A STYLE THAT LENT ITSELF TO THEIR DANCING. IT WAS A STYLE IN ITS OWN CATEGORY, LIKE SUNNY AND THE SUNLINERS "TALK TO ME". Angel Baby Redux.......2002-03-13

I might have rated this disc a solid 5 stars except that the thread of "puppy love" which runs through most of these 23 tracks becomes, for this listener at least, a bit much after the first 15 or so.

Having said that, I must affirm that "puppy love" has, perhaps, never been captured so poignantly, so sweetly, by anyone before or after Rosie and her originals.

The stand out track here, of course, is "Angel Baby" and there are three versions to choose from on this disc - the original US cut from 1961, a previously unreleased 1999 version, and the 1961 UK version. You will have to decide which you think is best. I tend to prefer the original. This is a simple but timeless song. From the extensive liner notes comes this in regards to the origin of "Angel Baby":

". . .a song she had scribbled on the back of her notebook as a sophomore at San Diego High School. "It started out as a poem," she says, "I had a puppy love crush on a young boy, the very first boyfriend I ever had right before I joined the Originals. I wrote a poem explaining my feelings but was too shy to show it to him so I turned it into a song. My aunt had taught me a four chord progression from listening to songs like 'Maybe' by The Chantels and I realised that I could put 'Angel Baby' to those chords. . ."

With its innocent lyrics (she was only 15 at the time) and twangy, almost dissonant, guitar intro coupled with Rosie's plaintive squeak, "Angel Baby" is, well. . . simply a dreamy piece of rock n' roll.

ESSENTIAL - Has All The Hits + Later Singles.......2007-06-30

I looked to see what would be the best CD of The Shirelles to buy out of the many around worldwide. Sipmly put, this has an amazing amount of songs! Not only every major hit by The Shirelles , but also most of their minor hits after 1963 as well. Most compilations feature just the biggest hits, but this CD continues through to 1967!

Fans will want all the hits, which you get, but what are big surprises are the songs featured after their hit-making trailed off with the rise of the British Invasion & Motown. SHA LA LA is really an upbeat soul raver, as is LAST MINUTE MIRACLE. DON'T GO HOME [ MY LITTLE DARLING ] will have uou humming this song in your head with it's irresistible melody. DOOMSDAY has the girl's superb harmonies. The Shirelles were a group in every sense of the word, and the leads & backing vocals each were integral in their records.

If there is one Shirelles CD to get, this is it. It has songs from their entire career on Sceptor in the 60's. Not many single disc CD's contain those latter day gems that truly are great, and should have been hits alongside the British rock, folk/rock, Motown & all the other genres of the mid to late 60's.

If you don't already have these songs, then there is no better collection to get. It not only has their hits, but ACE recordings is one of the best company's when it comes to mixing a great CD.

Some doo wop elitists look down their noses at the white groups in general, and the Italian-American ones in particular. Boy, are they wrong! The Earls have incredible harmonies, clever lyrics and great tunes. Larry Chance is the greatest doo wop lead vocalist ever. There are so many gems on this CD it's hard to know where to start. You will not regret buying this one.

I Remember When.......2000-01-21

Being from New York myself how can I not like the Earls. This disc has some golden goodies on it, along with the hit version of "Remember Then" you also get an unissued version, the same applies to "Never", "Cry Cry Cry", and they're all in true stereo. If you love the Earls then you must hear their version of "I Believe" in stereo, pure heaven. Those guys over at Ace Records are doing something right.

Doo-Wops Greatest Group, No Question!!!.......1999-08-04

The Earls are the zenith of the 50'sdoo-wop rock groups, every one else tried to copy their vocal street cornerharmony, but these guys are the originals, and in my opinion still a super group sound!

Juice Crew alum Masta Ace wouldn't make his mark until he moved west to Los Angeles and began making jeep-ass music, but, in 1990, he was the liquid philosopher, cracking both wise and intelligent. This record collects nearly all the tracks from his debut Take a Look Around, a mostly slept-on classic. Ace flexes tremendous range on some of Marley Marl's best production work, including the hilariously on-point impression of a fellow diabolical Crew member on "Me and the Biz," the snappy club fave "Music Man," and the updated Scott-Heronisms of "Take a Look Around." Ace's stream-of-consciousness flows on "Brooklyn Battles" and "I Got Ta" sealed his underground rep, and that's where he would emerge from in the mid-90s. Heads will appreciate the inclusion of rare B-sides, especially the intoxicatingly oddball "Go Where I Send Thee." An easily likable set of beats and rhymes that have aged well. --Jeff Chang
