4 out of 5 stars Triumphant return of Flor's Mendelssohn.......2005-06-01

At last Claus Peter Flor's Mendelssohn symphonies, overtures and piano concertos (with Edelmann) have returned. On the basis of these recordings (all previously issued) Flor, who is probably in his early 50s now, is still one of the better Mendelssohn conductors out there.

In particular, his Symphonies Nos. 2 and 5 have been hailed by critics on this side of the Atlantic for their beauty, proportion and Mendelssohnian sensibility. His other symphonies are also good and his collected overtures have been revered on both sides of the Atlantic by critics from Gramophone (which gave the overtures a rosette) to American Record Guide (which continued to promote his works even after they were out of print).

Flor's regualr partner in these performances, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, is a European band of the second rank. While not being confused with the more well-known orchestras in Vienna, Berlin or London, they perform universally well in these CDs in recordings that sound better than ever.

This is a very good collection of Mendelssohn's symphonic music and piano concertos that will rank with the best recorded boxes including Abbado and Karajn. In musical terms is far exceeds the collections led by Masur, Ashkenazy and the newer Naxos cycle of mixed quality.

Collectors that have never heard Flor conduct (or have never heard of him) can rest assured that this is a worthy alternative collection in this music. If this grouping and this price are attractive, go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great performances.......2004-03-30

Christoph von Dohnanyi and the Vienna Philharmonic truly deliver fantastic readings of these two lesser known symphonies by Felix Mendelssohn. The Vienna Philharmonic (as always) is well balanced, very transparent, and well rehearsed; they play incisively and with total conviction. Dohnanyi conducts the symphonies tightly, and that taught quality makes these recordings very exciting. My only complaint would be that, at times, the orchestra sounds a bit small. Still, overall, a wonderful compilation by London Decca.

4 out of 5 stars Faster, But Powerful.......2000-04-18

This CD wasn't totally good. There were several instances where Dohnanyi's penchant for speed annoyed me, particularly in the trio of the Minuet of the first symphony, which lost a lot of its "mystical" quality in this recording. This is minor, however, when one takes into account the clarity and power of this interpretation. Of particular note is the almost explosive accent Dohnanyi gets from the VPO in many spots--the end of the first movement of the First symphony, for example, comes off with almost hammerblow-style anger, where before it was a fairly normal conclusion. (Speaking of conclusions, you can hear EVERY instrument in the last movement of the First, including brass and winds... I've only ever heard the strings being prominent there!) As well, the end of the second symphony ("Lobe dem Herrn!") is so glorious that I have to play it ten or twelve consecutive times every time I listen to that particular movement. Overall, while these symphonies seem a little choppy at times, that's a small price to pay for accurate tempi, a solid musical interpretation, and an energy that brings them to life.

Though it's haunted by goblins, ghosts, and monsters, it is hard to find anything very satanic in much of this music, except its fiendishly difficult pyrotechnics. Its sole purpose is to display Gil Shaham's devilishly dazzling virtuosity, glorious tone, elegance, humor, and bewitching charm. The only substantial piece is Tartini's "Devil's Trill Sonata," in Kreisler's edition complete with his long, diabolically strenuous cadenza; Shaham plays it very beautifully, with genuine, moving expressiveness. Elsewhere, his tongue is never far from his cheek, whether he is tossing off Bazzini's "Rondo de Lutins" perfectly at top speed, or having fun with the fireworks of Korngold's "Caprice fantastique," Sarasate's "Faust Fantasie," Grieg's "Puck" arranged by Joseph Achron, Paganini's Caprice No. 13, with a piano part by Robert Schumann, and Saint-Saëns' "Dance macabre," in which the pianist doubles for a whole orchestra. There are also transcriptions of passionately romantic pieces by Brahms and Mendelssohn, and excursions into different styles: William Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost" rag; "Transylvanian Lullaby" from John Morris's soundtrack for "Young Frankenstein" transcribed by Shaham's pianist, Jonathan Feldman; and the title piece, "Devil's Dance" arranged by John Williams from his soundtrack for "The Witches of Eastwick." You can safely invite this devil of a violinist into your home--he is excellent company. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars Halloween Violin.......2005-10-17

While not always frightening as much as classical music with a Halloween theme, this is a fine recording to play at parties if the guests fancy this kind of music. The title refers to the Devil's Dance, for violin & piano from the film Witches of Eastwick, a work composed by John Williams. It is followed by A Transylvanian Rhapsody from the comic film Young Frankeinstein. The most famous piece of all "Danse Macabre" was Saint Saens' ghoulish work that nearly caused his mother a heart attack at the premire. Using stage effects like smoke and mist, Saint Saens had dancing skeletons waltzing on stage. The Devil Trill Sonata by Tartini has a frightening story behind it. It was rumored that the composer dreamt that the Devil gave him the score to this violin piece. It is played at an impossible speed and is one of the most difficult violin pieces ever composed. Only few violinists take on this piece. The music on this album is however not as scary as some other classical Halloween CD's out there but violin afficionados will be quite delighted.

4 out of 5 stars Puzzling choices, and not all that devilish.......2004-10-21

I'll say right off that Shaham's technique is top-notch, which is what one expects from such an album. And this is fine playing, with the violin and piano generally blending well.

But while this was clearly intended to be a "concept album," the artists/producers made several puzzling (and frustrating) choices that left me wondering just what the concept was supposed to be. The music is "devilishly difficult" at some times (the Tartini, for example), "creepy and eerie" at others (the "Danse macabre", others). However, several of the pieces are neither dazzingly difficult nor all that creepy - the Brahms and the Mendelssohn, for example, fail both definitions and, frankly, just don't seem to fit on this album. And then, there's the Paganini B-flat caprice - a solo violin piece transcribed for violin and piano, weakening the focus on violin virtuosity - while the Ysaye is left as a solo piece . . . well, a **piece** of a piece - we're given only a part of one movement of a four-movement work that is both very difficult AND built around that ultimate "creepy" theme, the "Dies Irae." Why only part of a single movement?

The net effect of all this is an album that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's almost as if someone committed to an album concept without making sure there was enough material to fill the album. Further quibbles: the violin is placed somewhat too far back, for my taste; on a virtuoso album, I want to be "up close" to catch all the nuances of the performance. And the balance between violin and piano is less than ideal at times, at least to my ear.

As I said, the playing is fine; it's the concept execution that falls short of "as advertised."

5 out of 5 stars Watch Out Where You Play This CD.......2002-05-17

As everyone says this is an extremely enjoyable disc. While it played fine in my ordinary CD player, the one in my computer couldn't handle it. Not only wouldn't it play, but it crashed the whole machine. Real deviltry at work!

5 out of 5 stars ... the best music ever recorded!.......2002-05-07

Sometimes I forget to breathe-this CD is so mind-blowing! This is the type of CD that you can't help but wave your hands around pretending to conduct the song!........ Ok.... Deep breathes.......o-o...I have to calm down! Now this CD features not just the best musicians but the best composers. They are John Williams (simply the best), Camille Saint-Saens (who composed one of the most famous "spooky" songs: Danse macabre!) ,and John Morris, you know.... Composed the music for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the funniest movie EVER! And guess what the theme song is on the CD!.. The charming yet spooky.........'Young Frankenstein': A Transylvania Lullaby. Hexenlied, one of my favorites, is by MR. Felix Mendelssohn (no he's not Felix the cat!)..........So...many....good.....songs....so.....Little--t-t-time. OK. It's time to wrap things up.....BUY THIS CD, YOU WON'T REGRET IT! :)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2002-01-23

This CD has pretty interesting selection. My only qualm about it is sometimes it seems that the piano is competing for volume with the soloist, especially in Dans Macabre. This rendition is definitely not my favourite version. But some other gems make up for this, like Devils Dance, and La Ronde des Lutins. Devils dance is really well arranged and performed, and thats my favourite track on this album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the world's greatest mezzos.......2005-03-09

Von Stade has a voice made of emotion. Her Cherubino (you can hear it on Solti's recording of Le Nozze) is simply THE BEST that there is, so it's vital that they included her "Non So Piu" on this CD - a very interesting arrangement, too, with violin. Not so good as with orchestral accompaniment but still it's nice. Now, I bought this CD for the Mignon gavotte and was not dissapointed. The notes are light and airy. Her voice compliments the natural beauty of the music. Equally gorgeous was the Massinet and oh! The Offenbach is wonderful. It drips with Von Stade-ness. I've heard Anne Sofie Von Otter sing the same aria and she seemed to overdo the comic aspect of it - although I am aware that after all, it is Offenbach. But my philosophy is play it straight and the funniness will shine through. Anyway, this is an excellent CD. Every piece on it is a gem. If you want a good sampling of a great singer, try this CD!

5 out of 5 stars More Mid-Price Enticements from Telarc.......2002-12-27

The Cleveland Orchestra under Dohnanyi here emerges as a great Mendelssohn orchestra. Part of that has to do with Telarc's recording--at once airy and perfectly detailed. Abbado's celebrated performance with the London Symphony on DG is a bit more athletic and youthful sounding perhaps, but Dohnanyi is superb in the poignant music of the slow movement and the grand apotheosis at the end of the work. Altogether, his is a cherishable Third.

Then there is "Die Erste Walpurgisnacht," a work that Berlioz hailed as a classic of Romanticism. It is also, for the usually dignified Mendelssohn, a triumph of pagan ardor over Victorian sentimentality. The Druids and "heathens" get the upper hand in Mendelssohn's piece, with a final choral paean to the light of their faith in a god of all nature. The work features some of Mendelssohn's most colorful writing for both orchestra and chorus, especially the marvellous "Kommt mit Zacken und mit Gabeln" ("Come with stakes and pitchforks").

Despite its relative rarety, "Die Erste Walpurgisnacht" has been well served on disc, by Ormandy and Harnoncourt among others. But given the excellence of the chorus and orchestra and the fine group of soloists--including the laudable Tom Krause--Dohnanyi's is about the best version available. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Romantic Mendelssohn.......2000-04-07

Mendelssohn's last composed symphony, his Symphony No. 3 "Scottish", was composed after a trip to England and Scotland. In addition, at the same time, he composed a cantata on a text by Goethe called The First Walpurgis Night, both works featured on this CD.

The Scottish Symphony, while inspired by his travels to the British Isles, does not contain any real folk-based melodies. Instead, Mendelssohn creates his own from modal treatments he heard, instrument choices, and dance rhythms of the culture, all which evoke a Scottish feel. The symphony opens with a chorale in the winds, a short rising melody (which will appear in the cantata). The chorale feels Baroque, with odd clashes of dissonance at cadence points. After the brief introduction, the pace quickens into a 6/8 dance feel, one which uses the opening melody in a new form. After a brief repose at the end of the first movement, the second movement begins with a snappy clarinet melody to cheer anyone's mood, one which instantly brings to mind the highlands. The third movement opens with a broad violin melody, one that at first is courtly, but evolves into love. The movement oscillates between that motive and a slow march-like dotted theme in the winds, brass, and timpani. The final movement features an athletic and brisk violin melody over quickly paced woodwinds, a feeling which lasts until the last few pages, when the entire ensemble comes together for a stately march, bringing the work to a full conclusion. Mendelssohn's last symphony is not necessarily brooding, but lively with a dark undertone. His melodies seem as if they were taken from the mists of Scotland, but Mendelssohn's classic inventiveness is all his own. Mendelssohn is a master of creative woodwind writing, and you feel they share the spotlight with the strings, while timpani and brass accent the drama. A great cap to his symphonies.

Mendelssohn's cantata Die erste Walpurgisnacht is his most extroverted showing of outright Romanticism. Goethe's poem is about Druid heathens who lived in a village of melded Christianity. They decide to hold an ancient ritual on a mountain, regardless of the Christian guards watching. The opening overture uses a melody almost exactly taken from the opening of the Scottish symphony; this one, however, is more forceful, and for that matter, resolves in a more tuneful manner. After the stirring overture, the story begins. A druid and a chorus of heathens sing of their intent to perform the ritual. An old woman warns the group, but the men and a priest decide to go. A very exciting sequence, with the Chorus of Druid Guards and heathens is nearly bombastic in ecstasy and excitement. A trembling appearance of the Christian Guards view the scene, but the Druids end the work with a chorus of light. This early conceived work may be Mendelssohn's most overtly Romanticized, outgoing work in the catalog. An interesting and underplayed work.

The Cleveland Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnanyi give fresh and riveting performances. Of particular note is the amazing string section, with incredible warmth and ensemble. The woodwinds and brass are balanced in proportion for the most part, and play excellently. The interpretation is forceful and swift, with the opulent Telarc sound providing the exciting atmosphere. The Cleveland Chorus is usually hit and miss, but they sing with great virility, as it calls for. The chorus is present, full, and well-balanced against the orchestra. The soloists, while they do not play a large role, also sing very well. Compare on your own, you may want Dohnanyi's earlier recordings of the same works (for less money) plus some other symphonies on the Decca/London label; but for just these works, a great choice.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely voices in lesser-known songs and duets........2001-05-24

Mendelssohn is said to have preferred composing his "Songs Without Words" to composing, as it were, songs with words. Nevertheless, he set at least 80 poems to music. Ten of them are here, together with one composed by his sister Fanny. On this CD they are allotted to Judith Raskin and her accomplished accompanist George Schick. The same artists also present ten Mahler songs, recorded at the same sessions in June 1965. The other artists present duets by Brahms and Schumann, recorded in 1974.

These are lovely voices, and the accompaniments are perfectly audible. Most of the items are distinctly under-represented in the current CD market. In lieu of program notes and biographical material, the enclosed booklet provides full German/English texts. Provided you don't expect to hear masterpieces, to hear every word, or to be spell-bound, you'll enjoy this 77 minute recital.

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2004-08-11

This piece is spectacular. It is lush, romantic, grand, suspensful and dramatic. It tells the story of Goeth's ballad of the same name or The first Walpugis Night. A study on the Faust tale written in 1799.
Mendelsshon tells this tale with fantastic results. A real favourite of mine.

    5 out of 5 stars Great stuff........2003-10-03

It's too bad Mendelssohn died so young. If he lived to a healthy old age, I'm sure he would have given Richard Wagner some serious competition. Just listen to "Die erste Walpurgisnacht"! It has all of Wagner's strengths, but none of his weaknesses. To elaborate, it has the same clarity of expression, the same melodic genius, and the same level of overall craftsmanship that can be found in Wagner's better operas. Where Mendelssohn one-ups Wagner is that he did it earlier, and he had the decency to trim it down to something that doesn't over-tax the performers and fits on a single CD with room to spare.

I know I'm going against the pros on this, because to most of them, Wagner is God, and Mendelssohn is a putz, but I honestly think they're both great.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Edda Moser.......2002-12-20

This album contains an essential recording by the great Edda Moser. In fact, her version of the aria Infelice! Ah, Ritorna, Eta Felice belongs up there with her definitive recording of Mozart's Populi di Tessaglia. This is singing with drama - a lost art. I have never listened to the rest of the album, but it is certainly worth owning for the aria alone.

5 out of 5 stars Mendelssoh's fantastic side, familiar and strange.......2006-12-12

The catalog doesn't need a new version of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream, but this one is sung and spoken in German (hence the use of Sommernachtstraum on the cover), which is rare. It's reminder that Mendelssohn was setting a German translation of Shakespeare. Harnoncourt's performance is very fine. His speakers and singers are first-rate, and he evokes both the dreamy relaxation of the play and its mercurial swiftness. Tempos are on the fast side, phrasing is crips without being terse, and the execution by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe could be mistaken for the Concertgebouw.

Mendelssohn wrote the overture to MND when he was 17, but he was thirty when he composed the rest of the music in 1840-41. In between, he set a ballad of Goethe's as a sedular oratorio from 1830, The First Walpurgis Night. It isn't one of his most notable works, since it falls short of expressing Goethe's text. Heresy and paganism seem rather lightly dealt with, and critics often point out that Mendelssohn, a composer uncomfortable with dissonance, was hardly the right choice to depict evil. The writer of the liner notes for this CD takes the posiiton that the music is meant to be satiric and humorous. Maybe.

In any event, Harnoncourt gives his all, and there are moments of quality music, such as the overture, that I was happy to encounter. Among the seven soloists (too many for the practical staging of a 30+ min. work), Thomas Hampson and Rene Pape are the standouts, not surprisingly. the Arnold Schoenberg Choir is expert, as always. I think the best way to approach Die erste Walpurgisnacht is to tkae it as lihgtly as MND, disregarding the Victorian niceties of Mendelssohn's theology. As diabolical fairy music it's not as engaging as its famous disc mate, but enjoyable nonetheless.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wondrous Performance.......2005-04-07

This is a truly wondrous coupling and performance. Die erste Walpurgisnacht sounds truly symphonic, like a cross between Berlioz' Fantastique and Beethoven's 9th. A great less-performed work. The Midsummer's Night to some might be a bit fast, but the energy is as authentic and welcome as can be.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2003-06-15

I am a high school student, but I know great tone and talent when I hear it. I was surprised to hear how easy James Thatcher portrayed the peices he played. I also thought the last peice, Dialogues for Horn and Piano to be one of the most impressive displays of the potential of the french horn. Although this is not the most exciting horn CD I have, it is definatly the one that goes beyond what is normally expected in horn literature. I give this cd a 5 stars+ for its flawless and beautiful music.
